I SEE THINGS IN BLACK and WHITE

If you asked anyone if I was a person who loves color, they would definitely say yes!  I love wearing bold colors, (red is my favorite) and I love to decorate with color.  But, despite my love for color, I can’t help but be attracted to rooms that have minimal color, especially rooms decorated in black and white.

To me, black and white is such a strong, sophisticated and dynamic color statement.  While there may not be an intense pop of color, the combination of black and white can be just as vibrant and stylish.

To make a black and white color statement successful, it’s best to have a variety of patterns so that the space has dimension and depth.  Try combining a black and white floral, stripe, check, and solids to create the best look.

The incredibly talented designer Tobi Fairley incorporated this lovely chest into one of her design projects.  What an easy and inexpensive way to update an old or thrift store piece.

Even with white or ivory as the foundation of a room, infusing black as the accent color will bring it to life and give the space substance.

The next time you want to add a little color to your home, try decorating in a simple palette of black and white!

Do you have a black and white room?  I’d love to see pictures.

QUIET STIMULATION

Working in the home decor and design industry can be visually and mentally stimulating…sometimes a bit too much.  In a given week, I spend many hours, flipping through magazines, looking at product catalogs, thinking about paint colors and researching design topics for my blog.  Every now and then my mind needs a break from all the stimulus.

Sometimes, my mind longs to look at beautifully decorated rooms with little or no color, for a bit of quiet stimulation!

THE BEAUTY OF YELLOW

As I walked around the Atlanta Gift Mart during the Summer Gift Show, I took notice that not only were lots of people wearing yellow, but there were alot of really great home decor products being shown in yellow.  I was thrilled since yellow,  the vibrant and intense version, is one of my current passions.

I love how yellow can lift the mood of a space and how as a color, it works brilliantly with so many other colors in the color spectrum.

Take a look at these rooms, fully dolled out in yellow or just adorned with a hint of the colors.  Either way, these are some great looking Yellow rooms.

I love how yellow plays against a strong white wall or molding.

This room feels cozy and comfortable with yellow walls, a yellow ceiling and all the cabinets painted yellow too.

Yellow and chocolate combined is a fresh and current color combination.Try substituting yellow in place of a khaki or camel color.  It will definitely give a room more energy.

What can you say except lovely!

Yellow by nature is clean and crisp, especially when mixed with white and other primary colors.

Bathrooms and Laundry rooms are a great place to use yellow. Rooms with little light will appear larger and more open.

DESIGNING IN DENIM

As seen during Spring and Summer runway shows, denim is a hot fabric trend in the fashion circuit.  While that may not seem unusual, given that denim is a staple in just about everyone’s wardrobe, denim as a new, hot  fabric trend in the home furnishings industry is what is taking people off guard.

Years ago, it was not unusual to see denim sofas as part of a “French Country” or “Shabby Chic” decor, but then just like so many other trends, the use of denim diminished and went by the way-side.  Well, its 2010 and like the saying goes, “what goes around, comes around.”

Denim is back, and back in a refreshing and exciting way!

A refreshing way to interpret denim into an interior is my using a mix of denim stripes and patterned fabrics .

DESIGN CRUSH: ERINN VALENCICH

I so admire the very talented design and lifestyle expert Erinn Valencich.  Not only does Erinn posses incredible interior design skills, but she is also a style expert in the field of cooking and entertaining. Having grown up in Northern California on a horse farm, and moving with her family to Los Angeles at the age of 9, Erinn’s style aesthetic mixes the casual, comfortable feel that can be found on the farm, with the stylish, glamorous design personality of LA.  I love that her designs are multi-layered and intricately stylized, while at the same time feel very attainable and real.

Erinn Valencich

As the owner of her own multi-faceted design firm, Omniarte Design, Erinn excels in designing spaces that are modern, eclectic and chic!  Her ability to combine colors and patterns, gives her designs a distinct edge.  I love the boldness of the red sofa and the graphic accent of the black and white throw.

I adore the mix of patters Erinn used in this space.  There is such a refined, yet comfortable vibe that this space gives off.  The upholstered chair, with the painted wood frame is to die for!

With a love for gardening, Erinn often incorporates beautiful fresh flowers into her room designs.

I love the button detail on this slipcover.  What a unique and unexpected touch.

Classic elegance defines the accessorizing of this bookshelf.  Simple and to the point!

Besides running Omniarte Design, Erinn has made regular appearances on HGTV and Entertainment Tonight, giving savvy style and decorating advice that inspires both the design novice and the design educated.  Her list of celebrity clients continues to grow and includes stylish stars such as Jaime Pressly, Mischa Barton and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The chartreuse walls give this classic black and white palette real energy.

The pattern mixing that in this space gives it an eclectic, high design feel.  I love the ornately framed mirror that has been painted high gloss red. Fabulous!

A mix of BOLD (headboard, duvet cover) and DEMURE (side table and lamp) are what define the personality of this space.

There’s  not much to say about this side table expect–LUSCIOUS!

Unexpected furniture additions like this ladder night stand are a trademark of Erinn’s.

A few of Erinn’s decorating principles:

  1. Layer your Lighting–“The quality of light in a room not only affects color, texture and mood, but it can add architectural interest to a room. Having three sources of light in every room is a good rule to go by.
  2. “When choosing a color palette for your room, decide on two main colors and a third accent color.”
  3. “Don’t be afraid to mix styles of furniture in a room.”

Thank you Erinn for inspiring me and my design style. You make creating beautiful rooms, look so easy!

PLEASE BE SEATED

One of my current obsessions is BEAUTIFUL ACCENT CHAIRS.  I love to walk into a room and see one or two beautifully upholstered or artistically designed side chairs.  I really feel that a side chair painted a unique color or upholstered in a unique fabric can make a room come to life, and every other piece of furniture around it sing.

This weekend, I plan to attend Scott’s Antique Market here in Atlanta, where I hope to find a worn and weathered chair that I can bring back to life.  I envision my chair with lots of curved lines, a fabric back and seat and some exposed wood so that I can paint it chinese red (my favorite color).  I’ll upholster my chair in a gorgeous fabric, maybe add a nail head trim and possibly antique brass casters to the legs.  Whatever my chair turns out looking like, it will definitely be a chair full of personality.  I’ll share before and after photos in a later post.

Until then, take a seat in your favorite chair and be inspired by these OH SO BEAUTIFUL ACCENT CHAIRS!

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

With the holiday weekend approaching, I wanted to share a few inspiring outdoor spaces.  The key to designing an outdoor space that is comfortable, relaxing and beautiful, is to view your patio, deck and yard as an extension of your indoor living space.  There are so many wonderful products on the market with “indoor style”, but are made to live outside and weather the elements.  Create an outdoor living room with sofas, chairs, tables and ottomans that are reminiscent of furniture you’d find indoors.  Infuse your outdoor space with a multitude of fabrics to provide layers of texture, comfort and softness.  Don’t shy away from color– create an outdoor space that is bold and dynamic.  And, let your “style personality” shine through by selecting accessories that add character and personality.

Enjoy these inspiring outdoor rooms!

SHARING THE LOVE!

I spend hours upon hours at home looking through design magazines,  flipping through decorating books and searching the web for beautifully decorated rooms.  Besides being part of my job, it is one of my favorite ways to spend a leisurely afternoon, unless of course I am at Barnes and Noble doing the same thing.

After years of collecting photos, I have accumulated a filing cabinet full of my favorites.  It’s fun to go back from time to time to look at them all, but I thought it would be even more fun to share a few of the rooms I just love.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.  Happy Monday!
