Gift Wrap Inspiration: Flower Bands

It’s SPRING and there’s nothing I love more than spring flowers, even when it comes to gift wrapping.

I’ve got a couple of special birthdays to celebrate this month, so I got a head start on buying gifts and got them all wrapped up.

I wanted these gifts to be bright and bold so I choose a yellow and white polka dot paper, red flowers and orange ribbon.  I also wrapped one of the gifts in a green gift back using the same flowers and ribbon to dress it up.

    IMG_5823 copy

To make the flower band, I pulled the flower bunch apart separating the flower heads from the leaves. The leaves were attached in pairs so I had to cut them apart.

Next I cut a length of ribbon to fit around my box and then hot glued the leaves and flower heads to the center of the ribbon.  I layered the flowers and the leaves to make the cluster look fuller.

Then all I had to do was to wrap the ribbon around the box and tape it down underneath

I placed the flower band vertically on the outside of the bag and hot glued it to the inside and bottom of the bag.

This is a simple and easy way to create beautiful gift wrap and you can customize the look by changing the paper and flowers to fit your occasion.

A New Gift Wrap Discovery

Just wanted to pop in and let you know about a great gift wrapping product one of my readers hipped me on.

After showing this Pottery Barn paper towel holder on my blog on Thursday, and writing that I would love to use it as a gift wrap holder but didn’t know of any sources for narrow gift wrap, one of my dear readers from Australia told me about Belli-Bands.

Pottery Barn Cuisine Paper Towel Holder

Belli-Bands is a line of gift wrap made and distributed by an Australian company called The Wrapping Paper Co.  These narrow bands of gift wrap measure about 3.5″ wide.  Belli-Bands come in a tone of styles, both solid and patterned, and are just perfect for wrapping small boxes, layering over larger boxes and would even be great for crafting.  Here are a few of my favorites patterns!

* NEW BB309 IKAT WHITE KRAFT

* NEW BB325 POHUTUKAWA

BB192 Japanese Blossom Red Belli Band

* NEW BB313 CONFETTI CARNIVAL

* NEW BB308 LARGE DOT WHITE/KRAFT

BB247 Tranquility Rose Blush Belli Band

BB632 Ice Flurry Red Brown Kraft Belli Band

BB755 Vintage Baubles Black/Gold Belli Band

The Wrapper Paper Co. also makes a 19″ wide roll of gift wrap paper too.

Of course after discovering this fabulous gift wrap source I immediately emailed them to find out if they ship to the US or have retailers here that sell their products.  I’m waiting to hear back and will be sure to let you know as soon as I do.  Fingers crossed that they ship to the US or have a distributor here!

And thanks Virginia for stopping by ConfettiStyle and telling me about this great gift wrap product!

All WRAPPED up in New York

The time has come for a play-by-play of the gift wrapping contest!  It’s really hard to set the stage and paint an accurate picture of the event, but let me just say it was so much fun, so exhilarating and way more INTENSE than I would have ever imagined.

Rossevelt Hotel Christmas Tree

We stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel on 45th and Madison Ave. and were treated to this gorgeous Christmas tree in the lobby.

On Friday morning, we left the Roosevelt Hotel at about 6:30 am to walk to Bryant Park where the contest was being held.  Even at 6:30 am the streets of New York were bustling. Once we reached Bryant Park, we had to do a little BNE (breaking and entering) as the park was still closed.

Breaking into Bryant Part

Bryant Park was such a beautiful location for the Scotch Most Gifted Wrapper contest.  We were in the Celsius building, which is an all glass structure that overlooks the park.

From the windows you can see the Christmas tree and skating rink. Yes, there were people ice skating at 7:30 am!

MGW Breakfast Bar copy

Scotch had a breakfast bar set up for us to enjoy before the contest and there were beautifully wrapped gifts all around serving as inspiration!

Once we were finished with breakfast, we began working with media.  It involved taking lots of photos, recording sound bites and doing interviews with local TV stations.  Here are all the contestants posing for a group photo.  We had to wear our Scotch Handband Tape Dispensers at all times.

Contestant Photo 2 copy

Prior to and during the contest, there was a live band playing holiday music which was piped into the building and all around the park.

Upstairs is where the wrapping magic took place.  There were individual stations set up for each contestant with dividers between so we couldn’t see what everyone else was doing.

Once the contest was ready to begin, we were ushered upstairs to begin round 1 of the wrapping. During round 1 we had 10 minutes to wrap two gifts.  One was a boxed game and the other item was a larger rubber duck outside the box.

Round 1

Throughout the competition there were camera shooting from every angle.  Here’s a look at my wrapped items from Round 1!

My Round 1 Box copy

During round 1 we were required to use the new Scotch Expressions Tape on one of the items.  I choose to use it on the game I wrapped. It really is a fabulous tape, comes in lots of colors and is removable!

Four people were eliminated after round 1 and four of us continued on to round 2.  During round 2, we had 13 minutes to wrap a TUBA.  Yes, OMG would be an accurate sentiment.  I had a vision in my head and wrapped like a fiend.  I actually finished wrapping with about 4 minutes to spare.

My bow looks at little deflated in this photo but it was perky when I finished wrapping.

After Round 2, two people were eliminate and two were selected to head into the final wrapping roundand I made it!  I was so trilled but also felt the nerves setting in at the thought of having to wrap the Round 3 item, a model airplane that measured 8 feet wide and 5′ long!   Yes, my knees were shaking at this point!

We had 16 minutes to wrap the plane and the intensity was beyond words.  The crowd was yelling, there were cameras in your face and time seemed to fly by (no pun intended).

Here I am wrapping the airplane.

While I didn’t win the competition, I took home second place and a nice cash prize!  The best part of all was having the experience of a lifetime and spending time in New York at Christmas!  Dreams do come true!

USA/

Thanks Scotch for a fantastic event and a lifetime of memories!

New York, New York, Here I Come!

I have a fun announcement to make today and I’m so excited!

So what’s the best thing that could happen to a girl like me that loves to wrap gifts??  Only one thing of course…being named as one of the 8 finalist in the Scotch Brand Most Gifted Wrapper contest for 2012.

Scotch Most Gifted Wrapper Contest

I got the phone call last week and just about fell on the floor!

In late November, the hubby and I will be heading to New York  where I’ll compete in the national gift wrapping contest  and have a chance at winning $10,000!   I’m so thrilled and truly blessed!

This is the 16th year that Scotch has held the contest, looking for the best gift wrapper in the land.  This years contest will be taking place on Friday, November 30th in Bryant Park and will undoubtedly include some challenging gift wrapping task.  I’ve been studying videos from the previous contest and have been amazed at some of the items the contestants had to wrap.  How about a 7′ sailboat or a 4 wheel all terrain vehicle?  Or what about a BBQ grill or full size refrigerator?  Let me tell you, this contest is no joke!  Needless to say I have already begun practicing my wrapping techniques, challenging myself to come up with clever ideas to wrap unusual items and have pulled out every book I have on gift wrapping (which happens to be a total of 12) for inspiration!

I know the next few weeks are going to be a test of my nerves and my creativity but I feel confident that when it comes to wrapping gifts, I can not only wrap a beautiful and chic present but anything that moves, rolls, sits, or stands too!

Wish Me Luck and if you live in the New York area I’d love for you to stop by and check out the contest, cheer me on and say hi!.  You can find all the details here!  And, be sure to follow me on Facebook and  Twitter for updates and photos before, during and after the contest!

Now on to the wrapping inspiration.

Presentation is everything and beautiful wrapping makes a gift even more special.

I folded and pleated the paper for this gift and then tied on a beautiful satin ribbon in a red and white diamond print.  A red glittered clothes pin holds a white die-cut tag I glued red dots to.

After wrapping my box in red paper, I placed a die cut note card on each end of the box and laced the two together with red and white cotton ribbon. (side view of the notecard above).

To create this look, I layered pink and red paint chip cards on top of each other and wrapped them around the box.  I used a white lace ribbon, paper mache heart and pink floral tag to finish the look.

Wrapping gifts is so much fun. I hope you’re inspired and ready to be creative with your gift wrapping and May Arts Ribbon!
