Easy Office Updates–DIY Style

All month I have focused on Organizing and Refreshing my home and my work life.  One of the task on my to-do list was to give some of my mundane office accessories a face lift to add a bit of cheer to my work space.

I started by giving these inexpensive cardboard file boxes a little color and style.  What started as a set of simple white file boxes from Ikea (5 for $1.99)

ended up looking like this after I added bands of Washi Tape and metal bookplates.

Next up was a little transformation of my white binders, which were inspired by these images.

Office Organization Made Easy {and Pretty}

Since the month of January at my house is all about organizing, I thought I’d share some of my favorite office and work space inspiration with you. And as an added bonus I’ve included three of my tested and proven organizing tips.

Organizing Tip #1:  A Pretty Workspace=A Productive Workspace

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be work in a space that is uninspiring and lacks a sense of style.  Creating a stylish workspace can be done by simply investing in a few colorful and chic desk accessories to hold your office tools and papers.  Head to your local big box store and shop the kitchen section for decorative glass jars, platters and baskets.

Flea markets and thrift stores are also a great resource of silver trays, bowls and dishes that will add an elegant touch to your desk.

Organizing Tip#2Organize From the Floor Up

The floor space under your desk or next to it is often unused.  This valuable space can help you stay organized if put to use in the right way.  Stack decorative boxes or lidded baskets under or to the side of your desk. Use them to hold extra printer paper, notebooks or other large office supplies that would normally sit on the top of your desk.  If the space allows, build a shelf under the desk to hold file and magazine boxes which you can easily reach when needed.

You can get his ghost chair on Amazon for pretty cheap. Perfect for a desk.

Organizing Tip#3:  Keep your projects Close to Keep you on Track

One of the best and most stylish ways to set up function and organization in your office is by incorporating a decorative bulletin/inspiration board.  The board becomes a great place to hang to-do list, materials for projects in progress and inspirational photos.  Incorporate a bulletin board that coordinates with your décor for added style!   Even in a limited space, you can make a bulletin board would for you.

A final note on organizing…be creative!  I love this idea of using a picture frame and a piece of fabric to create a desktop organization station!  The link to the original source is not working but it looks like a pretty simple DIY!

New Project + The Inspiration

I recently landed a new E-Design project (a service which I will officially launch in two weeks), developing a design plan for a home office.

The client wants to work with teal and yellow as the color  foundation for the space.  The design style will be traditional with a touch of whimsy.

As with all projects I work on, I first look for inspiration to serve as the “jumping off” point for the design plan.  I look through my photo files, magazines and on-line.  I walk through fabric stores, flip through vendor catalogs, and for home office projects, I take a spin through the Container Store.

Here’s a look at some of the inspiration images I’m working with…

I don’t know what other colors I’ll add to the teal and yellow color story, but I really like the idea of a natural linen.

 Traditional, whimsical and really pretty.

I love this office space but want something with a bit more punch. I really think the rug needs to be more colorful.

Love the idea of a retro desk lamp!

Pretty upholstered chair…the question is, Yellow or Teal?

I love bold lighting, especially in an office.

The idea of teal bookcases is appealing to me.  And, I love oversized bulletin boards in a home office space.

A white desk is definitely in the plans.

Classic styling with a whimsical rug.  I love a touch of animal print in every space.

How about painting the back side of the door teal?

I’ll definitely throw in some yellow desk accessories to add a bit of fun.

I’ll be working on the design plan and concept boards over the next few weeks, and will be sure to show you the finished plan.

DOUBLE TAKE

In the world of decorating, two is sometimes better than one. These spaces are more beautiful and distinct because of the double exposure of furnishing and accessories.

What piece of furniture or accessory would you love to have two of?
