The Tiny House Movement

Tiny House Nation

Have you had a chance to catch the hit TV show, Tiny House Nation? And an even better question is, “do you know about the tiny house movement?”

Tiny House Nation is a home/building show on the FYI network which is all about the downsizing movement that is going on across the country.  In each episode of the show, Zack Giffin, the contractor works with a team of builders to construct an amazing tiny home that is no larger than 500 sq. feet, with many of the homes under 300 sq feet.

Contractor Zack Giffin & host John Weisbarth

While many people in New York apartments live in less than 500 sq. feet, can you imagine living in a small space?   You just might consider it after seeing the homes this team builds.

The tiny house movement is gaining popularity with people of all ages beginning to understand that sometimes less can be more and see the value in downsizing their lives and the ‘stuff’ they surround themselves with. You might think that living with less and in such a small space means a home with no style but let me tell you that is not the case.

Tiny House3

The beauty of a tiny house is that it can be built just about anywhere, from the city to the mountains.  The home below was constructed in the Colorado mountains to take advantage of the scenery and the owners desire to live a fully sustainable lifestyle.

Tiny House16

After losing their home in hurricane Katrina, these homeowners rebuilt their home in Mississippi but decided to do it on a smaller scale.  Check out that outdoor space under the house.

Tiny House13

Tiny House8

I think I could enjoy living in nature if it looked like this and came with a pool.

Tiny House7

In addition to building homes that are permanent, the tiny house crew also builds home that are portable.

Tiny House1

Tiny House19

Portable homes allow homeowners to travel and explore but still have the luxury of a home at the end the day.

Tiny House2

When building a tiny home, the lifestyle of the homeowners plays a big part in the overall design.  If you love an outdoor space for entertaining or lounging, that can be incorporated into the design.

Tiny House18

For those of you that love to cook, it’s amazing the function and style that can be built into the kitchen space of a 300 sq. foot home.

Tiny House4

Tiny House11

And a full size bathroom is not out of the question either, including a luxury shower or tub.

Tiny House14--576 sq ft

Tiny House17

The attention to detail is amazing in these tiny homes, with every square inch of space put to use.  I love the small wall-mounted fireplace in the living space below.

Tiny House6

Vertical design is essential to many of the tiny houses being built with stair allowing for easy access to upper areas.  Kinda gives you the feel of living in a tree house.

Tiny House15

As part of the tiny house building process, the homeowners are challenged with purging their belongings and keeping only that which will fit into a couple of plastic storage bins.

Tiny House Nation purging

Tiny House21

I am totally smitten with the idea of a tiny home.  The hubby and I have actually tossed around the idea for when we retire.  We love to travel and the idea of having your home wherever you go sound great.  Now I just have to wrap my head around getting rid of all my rolls of ribbon and wrapping paper!

Tiny House21

So, does the Tiny House Movement sound interesting to you?  Do you think you could live in less than 500 sq. feet?

You can catch Tiny House nation on the FYI channel, Mondays at 9:00pm ET!

Are These Trends Over-Exposed??

Scalamandre Zebra Wallpaper

One of the things I’ve noticed since I started blogging is that when a popular blogger decorates with hot design trend, it starts showing up all over blogland in one bloggers home after another. As I designer, I’m exposed to the trends more than the average person and while I find myself gravitating towards what’s ‘hot’, I’m starting to feel like some design statements are becoming overused.

What I see happening is that homes are losing their unique personality because everyone is jumping on the same bandwagon.  And it’s also happening in fashion too!

Take the black and white Ikea Lappljung pattern.  First it was the pillow

Ikea Lappljung Pillow

and then the rug.  Or did the rug come first?   It wouldn’t surprise me if every home in American owned one or both of these items.

(I own the pillow)

Ikea Lappljung Rug

And I’m not even going to mention the Vargyllen pillow.

Now let’s take a look at six trends that may be reaching the level of over-exposure…

I’m seeing this Malakos Malachite pillow showing up in so many bloggers homes and on the pages of magazines. Malachite has been a major trend for several seasons now  and while malachite furniture can be pricey, in a pillow the trend becomes something everyone can afford.

Ok, how many of you have seen this Eliza J Scarf Print Maxi dress showing up on fashion bloggers feeds over the last two weeks.  I think this is the ‘it’ dress of the summer and will be showing up at parties, soirees and even blog conferences across the country.  I spotted the green version at Dillard’s a few weeks ago and even considered buying it myself.

It appears that a hot commodity in bedding these days is the black and white Linden Duvet from Crane and Company.  I’ve seen multiple bloggers/designers using this set in recent bedroom designs and I think it just highlights the fact that black and white color palettes are popular right now and classic will always be in style.   I love this bedding but I’m going to put a twist on the look for my spring bedroom refresh that I’ll be revealing next week.

Need a little something to hang on the wall?  Well, how about the Beverly IV Tropical Palm Leaves image that is showing up in droves across blogland. It’s bold and dynamic, and fits in with the bohemian modern decorating style that so many people are loving these days.  If the art is a bit much for you, this pattern is also trending in pillow form and as a wallpaper.

Another super hot wallpaper design is the Cole and Company Birch Tree pattern.  It’s being used in just about every room of the home but I especially love it in a bathroom.  It’s fun to see such a unique look become so popular.  If you’re interested, you can purchase the UK design wallpaper from Anthropologie here.

When it comes to flooring, this Basket Weave Tile just might win for tile of the year.  The black and white color combo is classic and easily mixes with any accent color.  While the tile might be most suited for the bathroom, I must admit I also like it as a kitchen backsplash.

So, what’s your take on these trends becoming over-exposed?  Are you one to join in on the fun or are you doing your own thing?

Home Decor Patterns–What’s In and What’s Out for 2015

I shared the hot design trends for 2015 here  and the 2015 Color of the Year here, and now I’m going to give you a look at the patterns that will be hot in 2015 as well as those that are no longer in vogue.

2015 Hot Trends

I’m so happy to say that many of favorite patterns are a hot design statement in 2015, and I’m really glad that a few over-used and over-exposed patterns have finally run their course and are on their way out.

Trend Alert: Tortoise Shells

Ever since Nate Berkus introduced that tortoise shell wall decor piece in his line for Target and it sold out in a flash, tortoise shells have been a hot design accent.  I love the eclectic feel they add to a room and that they can be hung on a wall or used on a table surface. In most cases it is illegal to capture and acquire a real tortoise so almost all of what you see on for sale on the internet is faux which is OK in my book.

Is tortoise shell decor on your hit or miss list?  I’m crossing my fingers that Nate will bring them back for another run!

Fall Fashion Focus: Colorblock Sweaters

The other morning I took an early morning stroll around one of the largest malls here  in Atlanta and spotted what is going to be one of the biggest fashion looks for all.  I am all for this look because it is the perfect blend of sporty and causal, colorful yet classic and tailored yet edgy.

Slide1

This look is going to be so popular that even the Color of The Year and the Print of The Year are getting in on the fun!_7927164
St. John sweater available at Nordstrom for $495.00!
The good news…I saw this look in just about every store in the mall and in lots of different price categories, so you have lots of shopping options if you want to get in on this trend.
What do you think of this fall fashion trend?  Will you be sporting a colorblock sweater?

Bullseye!

How many of you knew this was going to be a post about Target?  I entitled this post bulls eye because Target continues come out with awesome home decor collections with great prices and when items go on sale the savings are fabulous!

This morning I was out of the house early and dropped by Target around 8:30.  It was such a treat to be in the store when it was quiet and little to no customers.  As I wandered the aisles I began to notice the sound of clicking ticket guns.  This is a sound that only avid shoppers are familiar with and one that is sure to make the heart best faster.

Upon turning the corner towards the pillow aisle I noticed a sales person marking items down and putting them on clearance.

I didn’t burst into a full run but I did push my cart at a more accelerated speed and starting digging through the pile of pillows.

IMG_3345

After satisfying my pillow obsession, I wandered more aisles and stumbled across more and more clearance items. I was one happy gal!

Let me take you to my happy place..

IMG_3353

This wood lamp base had the perfect aged look and was on clearance for $9.88!  The shade I tried out on it was not only sale but was on $12.

IMG_3350

These white pitchers are great and could be used for serving as well as flowers.  They’d also be a pretty great Christmas gift for someone.

IMG_3359

There were lots of mirrors on clearance including this classic square mirror.

IMG_3360

The corners had metal brackets on them and the price…

IMG_3361

Yeah baby!

IMG_3362

Here’s another mirror and this one was only $8.48 and there were two styles available.

image

image

Loved these frames.  They ranged in price from $6.49 to $10.48. I couldn’t pass up  1, 2 or all three of these.

image

The jars with chalkboard labels area great and can be used to store just about anything.

IMG_3354

Lots of lamps are on clearance including these styles.  All were less than $30 but most were between $10 and $20.  That smoke grey glass one was so beautiful.

In addition to the clearance items I found there were lots of other items I wanted to bring home with me.  Most were not on clearance but many of them are on sale now.

IMG_3364

This mid-century modern style stool was great.

IMG_3344

Cable knit pillows are definitely a trend for fall and winter and Target has a lot of colors at great prices.

IMG_3346

This crewel work pillow was so pretty.

IMG_3347

This grey and white ikat was definite winner.

IMG_3348

And this grey and white pillows was a euro size.

IMG_3349

If you like a little glam this pillow is stunning.  The gold and black color combo is so chic.

IMG_3352

And there are several really great chair and ottoman styles to choose from.

Target is really hitting the bull’s eye” with each of their new product introductions and even though I couldn’t buy everything, several of these items did follow me home.

If you’re looking for some new pieces for your home and want to save lots of money I suggest you make your way to Target as soon as possible!

Happy Shopping!

Anatomy of Bathroom Windows

Whenever I’m working on a design project that involves a bathroom, one of the first questions the home owners have is always about what type of window treatment is best on the windows.  The answer to this just is not always clear-cut, but there are some looks that I prefer over others and definitely some design considerations you have to keep in mind when it come the window décor in the bathroom.

The first and foremost question is what type of privacy do you need?  Naturally if you live in the country and are surrounded by open fields you can probably get away with a little less coverage than someone living in the city.

Next, think about the style of your bathroom.  Not every bathroom will look good with fabric window treatments and others may not be suited for blinds or shutters.  The style of your space will definitely impact your window treatment choice.

Third, think about use!  Do you have to open/close them daily?  Can you access the windows easily?  In our first house in Seattle, I hung curtain panels on the window over the soaking tub.  Every day when I had to open and close the panels I had to step into the large tub to reach them.  In hindsight, blinds or shutters would have been a more functional option for me.

Keeping these three things in mind, here are some images of bathroom window treatments that work and why!

08b51bf81acbdf54f014574645762fbf

The roman shades in this bathroom are fabulous. As designers always recommend, they are hung up high, making the space feel grander and the top valance detail adds the visual weight to balance them against the large tub.  Because the windows can be easily accessed opening and closing these would not be a problem.

(image this space with wood plantation shutters–too heavy and bulky for these large windows.  They would dominate the look of this bathroom)

a3aa3095c6d471711ece20e7e3f1c42b

For this small window I love that the lower half of the window was frosted to provide privacy while the upper half was left clear to let light stream in.  The simple roman shade (hung inside the window frame) adds just the right amount of detail and design this space needs.

(curtain panels in this space would be overwhelming and blinds would be to lack-luster)

fdc2ed65f673694b61117c5e4c56a927

Here’s an example of curtain panels hung over a soaking tub.  What I like about this is that the panels are the same color as the tile, so they visually just float away.  They are also lightweight which would make opening and closing easy.

( patterned curtain panels and shutters would have been too much for this space and would have fought with the tile pattern)

5ad206ce878d3f97b68258e1a54c5831

In this space I think the floor to ceiling curtain panels work.  the pattern draws your eye to the window and serves as a nice frame to the window.  The sides of the tub can be accessed, again making opening and closing these curtain easy.

( shutters would have made the window feel even more like a big box and would not have added any softness to the space)

6669ec26c08f141c0d0a8c703688ea6e

The top and bottom curtain treatment in this bathroom works perfectly for the style of the space.  The flooring and the window treatments both have somewhat of a causal, country vibe.  Light can easily flow in through the expose windows while the lover panels provide privacy.

(because of the corner windows, this option was really smart.  Shutters or blind would have felt to heavy and lopsided)

9537fcb7000b0a803cbd9a5d4210029a

Shutters on the lower half of a bathroom window can be a great option in a sleek and classic bathroom.  The shutters provide privacy and provide visual balance with the wall cabinet and adjacent.

(curtain panels on this off-set window would have drawn attention to that face and would have made the window appear smaller)

1ba026847e2a0eff1244ed4b77890f05

Frosted bathroom windows are often the choice many builders but into a new home.  I like the simple diamond pattern on this window which helps to keep the space feel modern.  The swagged valance add softness and frames the window perfectly.

(curtain panels could have worked in this bathroom although they would have given the entire tub area a more boxed in feel)

921a228d9b8ec2ae8477d1ebfb02ae13

This is probably my favorite bathroom window treatment option, Top-Down, Bottom-Up shades.  These window treatments allow you to raise and lower the panel as you wish to expose or close off as much of the window as you want. The look is clean and simple which is ideal in many of todays bathroom styles.

If you’ve looked at your bathroom windows and are wondering what the best approach is, I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Happy Decorating!
