Outdoor Oasis Design Plan

Outdoor Entertaining Oasis11

Remember yesterday when I showed you the patio space at my brother’s place.  Well, I’ve been thinking about the space and all of its design possibilities.  So, I created a design plan for the space so that my brother and Mary could use it as a guide as they continue to decorate.

Because the space is rather larger, there are lots of options on how the space could be used.  I envision a dining area and a lounging with colors and design elements that tie the two spaces together.

Here’s a list of the goals I’d have for the space:

  • Soften the space with rugs and pillows
  • Create a color story that ties the entire space together
  • Add accessories that extend the function of the dining area
  • Add additional seating–creating a relaxing lounging area
  • Create a space that has both masculine and feminine appeal
  • Add privacy with trellis planter boxes along the side railings
  • Add ambient lighting for nighttime entertaining

And here’s the plan I came up with:

The dining area would get a large rug underfoot and garden stools would provide additional surface space around the table.  The bar cart could  be wheeled up to the table and used to hold beverages, additional serving accessories or even food.  Melamine dinnerware would accent the colors of the space and would be safe in case items were dropped.

The lounge area would include two cushioned lounge chairs  and ottomans.  The ottomans could be used underfoot or places alongside each chair to serve as a place to put books, trays etc.  A garden stool matching the one near the dining area would be used as a side table between the two chairs.  A large patterned accent rug and pillows would add colors and pattern and jazz up the lounge area. Planter boxes with trellis’ could be place along the railing and would provide some privacy as plants grew.  Tall outdoor floor lanterns could be used in the lounge are for evening entertaining or moved near the dining area.

Tips for creating an outdoor oasis:

  •   Rugs add so much visual interest and are a great way to bring color into a space.  If you have a large area you’re working with, you may have to use two rugs and secure them underneath to create one large rug
  • Pattern mixing is key with your textiles–a winning combination is a geometric print, a stripe and an abstract all-over pattern.  This will ensure a balance between the patterns.
  •  Pull accent colors for the rug and use accessories in those colors so the space feels cohesive.
  •   Plants and greenery add energy and soften all the hard surfaces like concrete and metal.
  •  Use flowers to add pops of color around the space–it gives the eye different elements to look at.
  •   Create an outdoor space that you can enjoy just as much as you enjoy your indoor rooms.

As always you’ve knocked it out of the park! It’s going to be gorgeous. I love the pillows and the dinnerware. You always inspire me. Blues and greens are my favorite decorating colors.

I love the colors you used in this design. Thanks for reminding us to extend your living area to the patio.
