My Take On The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale {and what I bought}

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Have you been reading the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale recaps that have been popping up on blogs lately?  For some, the Nordstrom sale is a big deal…a really big deal.

Nordstrom is based in Seattle and I lived and worked near their flagship store for 16 years. I’d anxiously await the first day of the sale and would take the day off from work to go shopping.  Back then the idea of buying pre-season items at discounted prices thrilled me.  Today…not so much.

Moving to Atlanta where summer temperatures can last well into September, I’m in no hurry to buy fall and winter items early.  So now I shop the Anniversary Sale in a different way.  I buy fashion accessories that I can wear year-round,  I stock up on basics like tees and  I take advantage of the deals on cosmetics.  And to keep my gift closet fully stocked, I buy a few gift items too.

I did spent some time on the Nordstrom website and spotted a few things I liked.  Then I made a visit to the store to see the items in person and make my purchases.  Wanna see what I bought? Check it out below…

WHAT I BOUGHT AT THE NORDSTROM ANNIVERSARY SALE

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and What I Bought

I love a Long Open Front Cardigan and this one is a classic, light weight style that can be worn year round. During summer I’ll wear the cardigan with a tank and in the winter with a long sleeve tee. The cardigan is available in 7 colors and is a deal at just $49.90.

Every woman needs a basic cross body bag like this Pebbled Leather Crossbody Bag ($78.90).  It’s a great size of daily use or travel and I love the roomy interior and outside zip pocket.  Available in black and chino brown.

What’s not to love about this black and white striped Monogram Stripe Tote?  Anything monogrammed is a winner in my book and the size of this tote makes is perfect for work or weekend.  It’s available in red, green, blue and black with white stripes.  $31.90

All of a sudden I’m into these modern necklace styles so I bought this Golden Crossing Necklace which is on sale for $35.90.  I think it will be perfect to wear with tees and sweaters and will also look great under a blazer.

I’m loving the ruffle sleeve trend that is happening right now so this Bell Sleeve Cozy Fleece Pullover was a must have.  The simple styling makes it easy to dress the top up or down and I loved the $39.90 price tag.  And there are 11 colors to choose from. I’d recommend picking up a basic color like black or grey along with a fashion color like olive or burgundy.

I always keep candles in my gift closet so I bought the Voluspa Maison Blanc Two-Wick Candle Set.  I’ve been a fan of Voluspa for year and for just $29.50 this is a great gift item.  p.s.  break the set up and you’ll have three gifts instead of one

These Floral Drop Earrings are so pretty in person and I just couldn’t resist them.  Their from Bauble Bar and the colors and 3-d detail are what makes them so special. $48.00.  Also available in a solid pink.

If I had to choose just one candle to live with for the rest of time it would be the Votivo Soziety Soy Wax Candle in Red Currant.  The scent of this candle is amazing and it is one of the cleanest burning candles on the market.  The Nordstrom sale is a great time to stock up and save. $21.90

I usually wear MAC eyeliner and buy my lip gloss at one of the big box stores but I wanted to try the Stila Stay All Day Liner & Lipstick  after spotting them online.  The eyeliner is fantastic and I love the tip which it easy for the eyeliner to glide on.  The lipstick has nice coverage and nude pink color is very wearable by lots of skin tones.  $20.00

You can shop the entire anniversary sale here.

Clever DIY Home Remedies Using Your Heat Gun

I know it’s a bit of a cliché to give men power tools for Christmas, but the reality is, they love these pieces of equipment as much as their favorite sports teams and their poker nights. When it comes to the boundless and fascinating world of do-it-yourself, new tools are always fun to try.

With proper safety measures and common know-hows, these state-of-the-art tools, which range anywhere from cordless drills to glue and heat guns, can do miracles in our homes. Last week, I went looking for a specific power tool on my husband’s Santa wish list, one that can accomplish simple project concepts and have plenty of uses. I’m talking about a heat gun.

At the very least, most of us have an inkling on the things we can do with a heat and glue gun. From simple gift-wrap pom pom ties that I created, to expensive-looking Christmas ornaments featured on Felt Magnet, anyone with this type of tool can spruce up their holiday festivities.

As an avid DIY crafter, I’ve used a variety of heat-emitting tools. I wasn’t sure how different this particular one was going to be compared to the others. But upon researching, I was amazed at all the creative ways we can use a heat gun around the house.

A heat gun is a very practical tool. It generally has some routine uses that can be quite effective and trouble-free. Screwfix elaborates on the advantages of owning a heat gun, sharing how it can be used to melt, shrink, and loosen a lot of materials in a safer method compared to an open flame. Conversely, there are other clever uses for your dependable heat gun.

Remove Old Paint Drips, Stickers, and Labels

Sometimes, placing old newspapers below a do-it-yourself home redecorating endeavor just won’t do the trick, as paint still finds its way on our floors. By using a heat gun’s deflector nozzle on a low setting, we can easily wipe or scrape this stain off after it bubbles. Finish this cleaning task with a simple light scrub using a sponge. The same goes with trying to remove a product label from an item you just bought at a furniture shop like Ikea. A heat gun will take care of that in flash, leaving a clean and smooth surface.

Stick Floor Tiles and Molding

Throughout the years, window moldings loosen and floor tiles’ edges lift off the ground. A trouble-free remedy for these is to heat the materials’ sticky parts to somewhat renew its adhesive nature and prolong the bond. With this, I can easily make some repairs to my mom’s laundry room.

Repair Leather and Vinyl

Did you know that a heat gun could repair cuts in leather and vinyl? All it takes is a simple application of low-cure leather repair compound over the cut and use the heat gun to cure it off. Make sure that the tool’s nozzle is at a fair distance from the area you’re repairing so the compound won’t shrink or, worse, burn the material. Now that I know this, I’ve got a handbag with a tear on the bottom waiting to see the light of day again.

Remove Bicycle Decals

Our bikes have been sitting in the garage for the last two summers. Honestly, they need proper repairs and a facelift. My goal is to restore the bikes and give them a more modern vibe. I recently discovered that a heat gun easily removes the paint from the steel frame. With this, I can give my bike a prettier pink color. Furthermore, a little heat on the gears will get them back in working order.

If you’re looking for a good men’s gift this holiday, check out a heat gun. And I guarantee that not only will he love it but you’re going to find lots of ways to use it too.

Steve McKenzie’s, one of the premier home decor and gift stores in Atlanta is having an exciting product launch on September 7th with the introduction of the Florence Broadhurst Collection by Selamat.

I popped into Steve McKenzie’s the other day and got a sneak peek at some of the amazing products being introduced in the Florence Broadhurst Collection. The collection includes both large and small-scale furniture pieces, tabletop decor and linens. One of my favorite pieces is the Circle Square Serving Credenza shown below in white.  What a beauty this is! #barcartdreams

Tech Meets Style

One of the gifts the hubby and I splurged on for Christmas was new iPhone 6’s for both of us.  So far I am loving all the upgraded features, bigger size and lighter weight.

iphone 6

I had my iPhone 5 for a couple of years and never invested in a pair of tech gloves that would allow me to operate during the cold months.  I would either take my leather gloves off or I’d wear my fingerless gloves which allowed me to use my phone but expose my fingers to the cold.

Since my brother knew I was getting a new phone he thought it was time I got a pair of tech gloves so I would stop complaining how cold my hand would get.

It’s a good thing that my brother is a techie and loves gadgets because it knew exactly which gloves to get that would merge my fashion sense with my tech needs.

UR Rusched Spandex Gloves--Dillards

These are the gloves he bought for me.  They are the U/R Rusched Gloves and are available at Dillard’s which are now on sale for $24.00.

What I love about these gloves is how sleek and stylish they are.  The rusched detail near the cuff is pretty and feminine and the line detail on the palm enhances the gripping details of the glove.

Rusched Spandex Gloves--Red

Instead of a single finger touch feature, these gloves feature touch capabilities in all 5 fingers.  That means you can use any finger on your phone screen and can easily touch and drag or expand images.  The gloves are also insulted and will keep you hands toasty warm.

Rusched Spandex Gloves--Fossil Grey

If you’re in need of a great pair of stylish tech gloves I highly recommend these.

Next week is going to be a crazy one.  I got called back for more jury duty questioning, for a big case here in Atlanta and I have my fingers crossed that I don’t get picked.  In anticipation of a busy week, I’ve completed two design plans early, I’ve written all my blog post for the week ( I’ve got some good ones for  you) and a new stack of magazines is ready to accompany me to the court house!

Color Crush: Hot Pink and Gold

Happy Monday!  I hope you weekend was good.  I stayed close to home and continued on Mission Organization getting things super organized around me.  As I been working on adding a few color touches to my desk and work area, I’ve had color on my mind.

I wrote about selecting bold color combinations a couple of weeks ago and just can’t stop professing the fact that “Color Makes me Happy”. Hot pink as always been a favorite, so much so that I have adopted it as one of my signature colors along with red.  Recently though, the combination of Hot Pink and Gold is making me swoon.  There is just something so playful, sophisticated and cheerful when these two colors are used together.

Getting Ready for 2012—Etsy Calendars

Every year about this time, after all the Christmas decorations are up and most of my Christmas shopping is done, I begin thinking about the year ahead.

One of the first things on my “to-do” list is to buy a new calendar for the coming year.

A calendar is a big thing to me.  It records all the important moments in my life, allows me to set goals and lets me look back at all that I’ve accomplished in the year.  So, when it came time to pick out my 2012 calendar, I turned to Etsy and Paper Source and found some great options!

Mix Illustration Calendar–OliveandRuby–$12.50.  Every month showcases a different illustration in soft weathered colorations.  Measures 4.25″ x 11″

Retro Poster Calendar–Yumalum–$20  This is a great calendar for an office or a kitchen.  I love the bold typography and colors.  Measures 11.5″ x 16.5″

Wall Art Calendar–Paper Source–$29.50 Each month features an exclusive Paper Source design in bold, beautiful colors.  Measures 12.25″ x 19.25″

Plus…

Special Feature: On the back of each beautiful page are templates for creating wonderful pillow boxes, file folders, note cards, and square boxes. 100% recycled with 30% post-consumer waste and completely reusable, this calendar is about as earth friendly as you can get, and so lovely too!

Desktop Calendar–sdstationery–$12.50  This fun and whimsical desktop calendar comes with a clear easel.  Measures 4″ x 6″.  I love all the images and would use then a gift tags or frame them as art after the month has passed.

Modern Graphics Calendar–Lisasamartinodesign–$19.00  Beautiful hand-drawn graphics give this calendar style and personality galore.  Measures 8.5″ x 11″

Now the challenge is which do I choose?

In addition to one of the calendars above, I’ll be using a personal planner to keep track of appointments and my personal schedule.  Every year I pick up  a leather planner from Gallery Leather and this year, mine will be bright orange! Not only does Gallery Leather have a great selection of calendars and planners, but all their products are handmade in the USA.

Have you already picked up your 2012 calendar?  Help me pick mine out…which one of these is your favorite?
