The Makings of a Fall Wardrobe

I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, that I had to stop by a mall during our weekend road trip to pick up a few things suitable for 62 degree weather.  While shopping for items that I needed, I was totally in tune to the fall looks and started creating a list of items and looks I WANTED for fall.

For me, fall will be all about COLOR, TEXTURE, PATTERN, DETAILS AND ALL THINGS PLUSH AND COZYHere’s the looks I hope to be sporting for the season…

I love long skirts, even though I’m on the shorter side of the growth chart (5’2″).  While the horizontal stripes in this skirt are not my favorite, the combination of a long skirt,  a great pair of boots and a sweater may be my go to outfit for fall.

I Love Scarves!  Solid, plaid, patterned…you name it.  For fall, I plan to wear a lot of solid colored scarves and give them a bit more style with the addition of a vintage pin.  I’ve found some really great scarves at TJMaxx, Old Navy and Macy’s.

I worked for Eddie Bauer (all things cold weather) for 11 years and developed somewhat of love for outerwear.  A few years ago I purchased a bright red wool coat and hope to add something bold and orange to the mix this year.  Color makes me happy, even in the dead of winter.  This particular beauty is by Burberry and is available at Nordstrom.

So, we all know about my handbag obsession.  Just looking at this clutch makes my heart go pitter patter.  Love the animal print and compact size.  A must-have for fall!

I’m loving the tie neck blouses that are being shown for fall.  I remember wearing these “back in the day” and can’t wait to relive this style moment.

What girl doesn’t love (faux) fir?  I have a couple of fur collars (handed down from my mom), that I’m planning to add to simple cardigans and blazers for fall.

This boot is definitely on my list.  I love the rugged heel with the more stylized flap and buckle detail. Vaneli Jancey Boot available at Nordstrom.

Classic cardigans are already a wardrobe staple for me, but I want to add a few new colors to my line-up for fall.  Deciding what colors is the hard part.

I’m waiting a few more weeks to hit the stores and really begin my fall shopping. And, I’m sure I’ll add a few more things to my shopping list before then.

Have you starting shopping for fall yet?  What’s on your list?

Best of Etsy: Fall Finds

Sorry I was MIA yesterday.  Our little road trip and visit with family had me somewhat preoccupied.  The trip was nice, despite the fact that I totally under-estimated the weather (62 degrees) and had to stop by the nearest mall to pick up a few cold weather items.

Since I’m officially in a Fall state of mind, I’ve pulled together some fabulous finds from Etsy for you to enjoy.

The Starting Point of Design

One of the questions I know every designer gets asked is,“where do I start when designing a room?”  Put five designers in a room and you’ll probably get five different answers to that question.  Some would say wall color, others would say artwork, and yet someone else might say the rug.  While there may not be a right or wrong answer to this question,  there are some pros and cons to the most common answers that you might hear.

ART, WALL DECOR & WALLPAPER

Encompassing the largest visual area within a room, the walls definitely influence the overall look and feel of a space.  If the artwork you’re placing in a room is oversized or unique, you can use this as the starting point of your design plan.  As a general rule of thumb, I like to interpret the lightest colors within the art onto the main pieces of furniture, and keep the bolder tones for the accent pieces and accessories.

In the photo above, the exact colors from the artwork were used for the pillows and in the side chair fabric. A tone of the lightest color within the art was used for the sofa fabric.  The bright yellow garden seat provides a vibrant punch and the white rug and tabletop accessories serve as a visual contrast to the overall color palette.  All of the colors (or tones and shades of) are in the artwork so the story of the room is tied together.

Again, the boldest color within the artwork is pulled down into the room and used for accent pillows.  A shade of the darkest color forms the pattern within the chair fabric.  The white matte surrounding the artwork shows up in the chair fabric, coffee table top, mantle and accessories.  The gold framed floor mirror is just another tone of the yellow gold found in the art and rug.

This oversized and very intricate piece of wall art is composed of  just two colors. By using white as the key color in the room, the dark background of the art helps to ground the room and give it depth.  A few darker pops are incorporated with the accent pillow, rug and throw to balance the visual impact.

Wallpaper with a defined pattern and theme can definitely serve as the jumping off point for your room design.  The accessories are a direct interpretation of the wallpaper and the white table, lamp and garden seat connect the wall paper to the decor.  Whenever I add an accent color into a space, I always try to use it, or a version of it in three places within the room.  This way the color addition looks intentional.  Can you spy the three “red” accents?   (mirror, apple arrangement, terracotta pot)

If your wallpaper showcases a specific theme, let that be the foundation for the decor.

THE RUG

As with wall decor, bold patterned rugs can and are often the starting point for a rooms design. Pull key colors from the rug pattern and use that as the foundation for your furnishings and accessories.

The dark teal wall color is found in the rug pattern and allows the more vibrant colors used within the room to pop.  The berry tones are scattered around the room via the accessories, and the white within the room helps to soften the overall look.

The blue and white striped rug not only defines the color palette of this room, but the vertical stripes visually enlarge the space and create movement for the eye.  The deepest shade of blue from the rug is the color used throughout the room, creating a very seamless and cohesive design statement.  White keeps the space light, airy and modern.

YOUR FURNITURE STYLE

Is your furniture retro, contemporary, antique, cottage or maybe some other distinct style?  If so, you furniture will definitely define how your room is decorated.  You want the space to feel unified so everything you place in that space will connect back to your furniture style and communicate a clear message.

A retro styled sofa and coffee table call for vintage modern wall decor and sleek flooring.  The room has a focused point of view and design style.

Shabby, worn and rustic furnishings in white call for walls and floors in white.  Bolder colors mixed with the white furniture would look harsh and forced.  Using subtle, washed out tones keep the space soothing and calm.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

Today, many people are building distinct architectural elements into the design of their rooms.  Arches, beams and millwork give the space character and define the rooms style.

The shape of this hanging pendant light plays off the shape of the overhead arch.  A longer, slender light fixture would have diminished the arch detail and made the entire space less appealing.

This india inspired arch was clearly the starting point for the design of this space.  The fabrics, furniture and colors all play off the shape of the door opening.

COLOR

For many people, a key color is what they base their design plan on.  If you are using a strong, bold color, don’t be shy.  Make a statement with it and make it intentional.

Using subtle variations of a strong color will add visual interest while keeping the design theme in tack.  White or off-white is best as an accent color so the bold color does not overpower.

Hot pink on the walls shows up again in the window treatments, throw and within the art and accessories.  Again, white is used to keep the space from being too jarring.

A bold color plays off  black really well, but creates a more dramatic statement overall.  Repeat the touch of black in multiple places within the room to tie it all together.

FABRIC

If I’m designing a room from scratch, fabrics typically serve as my starting point.  The sofa fabric dictates the fabrics for the window treatments, accent chairs, rugs, pillows, accessories, and paint color.

Once I pick my fabrics, I then select the wall color and go from there.

The light turquoise in the chair fabric is pulled in via the ceiling paint and the neutral sofa color shows up again in the rug, wall color and other accessories.  This space connects the dots beautifully.

In this space, the window treatment fabric provides the dominate visual statement.  The terra-cotta color defines the color statement for the room, with darker, richer shades within the same color family found on the sofa, table cubes, pillows and lighting.

The bottom line on finding the starting point for a room design is to pick the most dominant visual statement,  use that as your launching pad and tie your colors, accessories, furnishings and wall decor back to that dominate element.  This approach will ensure a cohesive & beautifully decorated space.

I’m off to meet with a client this morning to begin work on a design plan for her basement.  I wonder what the starting point of this plan will be?

Have a great day!

Some Things Never Go Out of Style–Polka Dots

If you’ve been tracking the Fall 2011 Fashion Trends, you’ve seen that Polka Dots are going to be a big thing.

The history of Polka Dots goes way back and has been a staple in the fashion AND home decor industry for years.  I happen to love polka dots, not only because of the whimsy they bring, but also because they are classic and can be interpreted into any style statement.

Polka Dots come in a lot of different colors, classic black and white (my fave) to a range of rainbow colors.

A New Addition To My Bag Obession

Yesterday I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Greige Designs where Christina wrote a lovely post about a late  summer picnic she had over the weekend.  In addition to beautiful images, she mentioned French Basketeer, a company that sells authentic French baskets, carts and totes.  Christina used one of their totes to carry all of her picnic goodies.

Now, anyone that knows me, knows I have a slight obsession of with handbags (totes included).  I can always find a reason to add yet another bag to my ever-growing “collection”.  So, after reading Christina’s post,  I immediately clicked over to check out the French Basketeer website.  They had me hooked with the image on the opening page…a gorgeous bright yellow tote!

Spurred by the efforts of France to reduce the amount of disposable products and waste, and eliminate the use of plastic bags in their country, French Basketeer was born and “the elimination of plastic bags was identified as a goal”  for the US market.

French Basketeer’s mission is “to provide authentic French baskets, carts and totes which are practical yet stylish and to help get the word out that plastic bags are indeed, “so passé.”

I couldn’t agree more and have been using canvas totes for several years now, for all my grocery shopping.  After seeing the wonderful array of totes available from French Basketeer, I’m upgrading and will be carrying one of these wonderful bags whenever I shop.

I love that their bags are perfect for grocery shopping, mall shopping and antique shopping!

Check out a few of my favorite styles:

Cassis In Fuschia–$42

St. Tropez in Rust–$43 to $48

Eze–$43

Dijon in Natural–$48

Have you given up the use of plastic bags.  If not, consider a French Basketeer tote.  Not only will you be saving the planet, but you’ll look Stylish in the process!

p.s.  French Basketeer has a wonderful blog you’ll want to check out too!

Have You Been in Crate and Barrel Lately?

When I lived in Seattle, we didn’t have a Crate and Barrel store to shop at.  I got their catalog in the mail and ordered lots of kitchen and dinnerware items from them.  I would have given anything to have an actual store that I could have shopped at.

Over the years, Crate and Barrel has landed in just about every major city across America and has developed an incredible product offering, from furniture to cookbooks.

Now that I live in Atlanta, and there are several Crate and Barrel stores nearby, I can’t seem to get to them on a regular basis.  But when I do, I always walk away with a list of items on my “wish list”.   This is what made my “wish list” after a recent visit to their store.

I absolutely love this Driftwood Mirror.  I love how imperfect and artist it is.  Ideal for my beach house (on my wish list too), but for now, I’d hang it as part of a gallery wall of photos and art.

I’m not a big cook, but when I do cook and entertain, I love to set a beautiful table.  This  Gardenia placement is so colorful and fun.  Perfect for an end of summer party don’t your thing?!

I have no blue in my home but I just think this Ginger Blue Side Table is so cute.  I love the shape and the bold color.  I think this would look great as a nightstand or the single punch of color in a neutral room.

Love, Love, Love this chair.  The color combination is subdued yet energetic.  I love the grey mixed with tan and that spice color.  I love this chair so much, I’d design a bedroom around it.

Isn’t this Tonga Wine Cooler beautiful?  While I’m not a big drinker, it would look great as part of a party setting.  I’d be more likely to use it as a flower vase, filled with red and pink tulips.

With Fall fast approaching, I think this Hakkari Hurricane would be a great addition to my decor.  The black finish with pierced leaf design gives it a dramatic feel.  How great would several of these look as part of your Halloween decor?

I don’t know what it is, but I’ve been attracted to daybeds lately.  I love the lines of this Brighton Coffee Daybed and would toss a bunch of colorful pillows on it.  Daybeds are a great seating and sleeping option for kids rooms, and I love to use them in offices that need to double as a guest bedroom.

My recent trip to Crate and Barrel has definitely made me realized I need to stop in more often.  I love their product mix, prices and in-store displays.  Crate and Barrel is definitely a source of design inspiration for me.

Have you been in a Crate and Barrel lately?  What are some of your favorite items?

p.s.  If you don’t have a Crate and Barrel near you, request the catalog.  It’s the next best thing!

Design Details + Some Inspiration

I’ve been working on a design project over the last few months that has involved painting the walls and staircase, building out a home office, building built-in bookcases, re-doing bathrooms and re-modeling the kitchen.

Kitchen in Progress

Most of the big projects are almost complete and now it’s time to focus on the details.

When designing a space, the details are the funnest part to me.  Whether its drawer pulls, window treatments, pillows, lighting or textiles, it’s the details that really make a space come to life.

Here are a few rooms where attention to detail have made all the difference.

Ordinary window treatments would have been fine in this area, but the addition of rustic shutters take this area to a whole new level.  Shutters are very popular right now and are a great alternative to fabric window treatments.

When it comes to tabletop decorating, the details really do matter.  You want to arrange items so that you create movement within your display both vertically and horizontally, as well as front to back.  The tall lamp is balanced by the iron sculpture and the arrangement flows easily from left to right.

Giving your floors a unique paint treatment is a great way to add interest to a space and tie multiple areas together.  I love the herringbone pattern on this floor and the high gloss finish.

Walls usually get a coat of paint, but it most cases the detail stops there.  Here, a scalloped picture frame border has been painted on the wall and used as the larger than life frame for this collection of smaller prints.  So clever and stylish!

Lighting is a great way to add interesting detail to your home.  Unique chandeliers, hung in multiples is such a refreshing approach to traditional pendant lights.  And, you know my love for milk glass!

Adding in a hand-crafted furniture piece is a quick and easy way to add stylish detail to your home.  A vintage table turned into a special place to write a message.  It’s still functional, but personalized.

Love, Love, Love this ceiling medallion.  The thickness, the carved detail, the scale… and set against a black ceiling.  WOW!  The black ceiling is an amazing detail in its on right.

Design details should grace every room of your home.  This bedroom exudes special details, from the border on the night stands, wallpaper walls to the fully accessorized bench at the foot of the bed.  Eye candy everywhere you look. And the space looks comfortable, relaxing and stylish.

Make a statement with your curtains and/or window treatments.  Add detail with a unique pattern!

 Love these roman shades.

Pillows are the optimum “detail” accessory.  Mix and match colors, patterns, shapes and textures. A common color is all that is needed to tie it all together.

Add detail by doing something unexpected.  I adore these upholstered walls with nail head trim.  So sophisticated.

Or, paint  an artist element on your walls.  Wall stencils are all the rage and make this type of job easy.

Unique drawer pulls will update furniture or built-in cabinetry in a flash.  Anthropologie and even Hobby Lobby carry a great selection of stylish knobs.

Accessorizing is all in the details.  When accessorizing bookshelves or open shelves, use a variety of items, textures and materials to create a personalized statement.  Larger scale items will create focal points and shiny finishes will add a bit of shine and glamour.

Whether you’re doing a major home renovation or just sprucing up your place, paying attention to the details, adding unique details throughout your home, and personalizing those details will make your home a true style statement!
