Classic Color Combination: Black & White

When you think about classic colors to decorate with, black and white should be at the top of your list.  Black as a stand alone color is dramatic and refined. When paired with white it can take on sleek, modern feel.  The two colors together are sophisticated and timeless and the perfect foundation for any room.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a bathroom, sunroom or this beautiful living room that I spotted in Real Simple, black and white never fails to disappoint.

Pillow Pairings | My Favorite Black and White Pillow Styles

Raise your hand it you own this black and white pillow cover from Ikea.  I think half the world owns the Lappljung Ruta cushion cover, including me!

I think the appeal of this covers is the graphic design, the sturdy fabric and of course the black and white color combo.  And let’s not overlook the $10 price which makes this pillow one of the best design deals around.

While I love the Ikea pillow, I think its time a new black and white pillow becomes the darling of the design world. To find a winner, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite black and white pillows/cushion covers along with the accent pillows I’d pair them with them when decorating.

Check out my pillow pairings and leave me a comment and let me know which is your favorite.

Black, white and greek key are always a winning combination and a classic look that will be around for years to come.  The black velvet pillow pairs beautifully with this dusty blue Schumacher floral fabric and a tan and white mini animal print.

This woven black and white pillow has a casual vibe that is perfect for a sectional or sofa.  Because of the texture, I’ve paired it with a deep yellow velvet pillow and an abstract floral so the look is relaxed and carefree.  The black and white woven pillow would also look great paired with other black and white pillow designs.

By far my favorite black and white pillow grouping!  This textured black and white pillow cover is so versatile that you can easily pair it with other patterns.  Since I love all things emerald green I used that as the accent color for this combo.  The floral pillow keeps the overall look soft while the velvet green pillow with greek key keeps the look classic.

If you like a more modern vibe, you’ll love this combo.  I like how the bold design of the black and white grid pillow mixes well with a modern strip and Asian floral design.

p.s.  there are a thousand shades of white so don’t think you have to have the exact hue in each pillow design.  A little contrast is a good thing.

I’m starting to see black and white buffalo check pillows all over Pinterest so it looks like this pillow design is a new favorite amongst designers and design bloggers.  An oversized plaid like this works will with ditzy prints and florals and you can go with just about any color combo you want.

Tips For Pairing Pillows Like A Pro

*************************************************

  1. Ensure all pillows have a consistent color theme.  If you’re using a black and white pillow as the foundation, pair it will other designs that include black, white or both colors so there is a connection amongst the pillows.
  2. The scale of patterns should balance each other, not compete for attention. A good rule of thumb is one large , one medium and one small.
  3. Texture is important and can be visual texture (what the eye sees) as well as tactile texture (what you actually feel).  Texture adds warmth and depth to pillow pairings and should always be a part of your pillow mix.
  4. The size of the pillows matter.  Just like you scale the size of print, you want different sizes of pillows. Here’s a winning combo you can always count on…

For the sofa:  (2) 24×24 pillows  + (2) 20×20 pillows + (1) Lumbar pillow  //  For a loveseat: (2) 20×20 pillows + (1) Lumbar pillow

So, which black and white pillow is your favorite and which pillow pairing do you like most?

Printable Art–My Love Note Designs

Thank you for all the wonderful comments on our spring bedroom refresh.

Today I wanted to share a little more about the beautiful prints I used in the bedroom.  I knew I wanted to place a grouping of images on the wall next to the window and closet to my side of the bed.  You see that wall when you enter the room so I wanted to make an impact.  I also knew that whatever I hung I that wall would be hung in gold frames.

Since one of the goals for the refresh was to add more accents of gold into the space, frames were an obvious and easy solution.

ConfettiStyle Spring Bedroom Refresh12

All four of the prints I used are from an awesome Etsy shop called MyLoveNotedesigns.  The shop is run by Christina who personally designs all of the printable art, many which contain inspirational words and positive messages.  Christina opened her Etsy shop in 2014 after starting a family and leaving an accounting career and the corporate world behind.  Christina said she started designing her prints as a way to inspire and remind herself of what is meaningful in life and to personally connect with others.

The collection of prints I choose to use were perfect for a bedroom space and also allowed me to add a touch of personalization into the room.  The LOVE print is one of my favorite designs and gold foil is so pretty once printed.  The HEART of flowers couldn’t have been more perfect for our room with a black background and pink flowers.  I also choose a monogram print and love how Christina has added flowers to give the design a special touch.  The last design in the group reads All Of Me Loves All Of You and I love both the message and the delicate details of the design.

Once printed, I placed each image in a Ikea frame which I spray painted gold using Rustoleum Bright Coat Spray Paint (which happens to be my favorite gold spray paint)

I’ve purchased several printable images from Etsy in the past and I must say that the collection of designs that MyLoveNotedesigns offers is one of the best.  There are over 450 designs to choose from including gold foil, nursery designs, calendars, meal planners, expense trackers and weekly planners and most of the designs are $5.00 or less.  And, Christina also offers custom orders if you have a specific design in mind.

Because there are so many great prints, picking your favorites will be tough but you can use my list of top 10 to help you shop…

Pretty In Pink: Spring Bedroom Refresh

PRETTY IN PINK BEDROOM REFRESH

Whew!  Refreshing our bedroom for spring has taken a lot longer than I expected.  I was originally waiting for pillow covers to arrive from overseas, then my schedule got super busy and last week I got sick.  Despite it all, I’m so glad to have the little project done and so excited to share it with you.

Let’s take a look at where it all started.

I spotted this floral pillow cover on Etsy and immediately fell in love.  I don’t decorate with many floral pattens but something about this design and the colors captured my heart.

Pink Rose Pillow

Once I had the pillows in hand, I created a design board to represent the vision I had for the space.  I love our  headboard and frame and wanted to stick with a foundation of black and white for the room.  I also wanted to add in more gold accents and a pop of green.

As I was planning the space, Christina from MyLoveNotedesigns contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing her custom designed art.  I jumped at the opportunity!  What timing and just the detail I was looking to add to the room.

Now that the vision was set, it was time to execute (lots of photos to follow)…

Spring Bedroom Refresh–The Plan

Hello there!

I hope your weekend was a good one. I got some work done, made a dent in my magazine stack and the hubs and I finished watching season 2 of the Orange is the New Black.  We are anxiously awaiting season 3 which is supposed to debut sometime in June.

I just wanted to drop in today to share the plans for my spring bedroom refresh.  Because I’ve decorated our bedroom on a foundation of black and white and use color as the accent, I get the urge each season to change the accent colors.  It’s a good thing I love color and love to change-up my decor.

What started as a love for these pillows (which I may have shown you before) and the assurance from the hubs that he could embrace pink…

Pink Rose Pillow

has turned into a plan to freshen up the bedroom for spring.

Here’s what I have planned:

New black bedding (some custom and some diy)

New pillows for the bed (oh how I love pretty pillows)

Create a gallery wall with LOVE as the theme (I can’t wait to share the incredible source of these beautiful images with you)

New accent pieces to introduce more gold into the room

I’m hoping everything falls into  place because I love the feel of the inspiration board~

Stay tuned, I plan to have the makeover done by mid-April.

Plans in Motion: Christmas 2014

Tartan

Wow, did the weekend fly by or what?  I got quite a few things checked off  my  to-do list this weekend but I could definitely have used another day to wrap up and wind down.  I hope you all had a great weekend.

One of the things I found my self doing this weekend was finalizing my Christmas decor plans.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you I was thinking about something like this…

Frame as Headboard

Sometimes an image can stop you in your tracks not because it is a space with lots of design details and color, but because what makes it beautiful are the simple details and simplicity.

Design Tip:  Never, Ever, Ever pass up a beautiful picture frame when antiquing or thrifting.  There are so many other great ways to use a picture frame beyond framing a photo.

11 Design Details I’m Loving & that you can do in your own home

Slide1

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, Design is in the Details.  And that’s one of the things I love about design.  The fact that you can take a basic ordinary architectural element, accessory, furniture piece or decorative element and use it to create something unique and beautiful for your home.  I’m working on a project that is requiring me to think about details and how they can be used to transform a space and save money at the same time.  With details on my mind I thought I’d share 11 of my favorite ideas, ideas you can use in your own home.
