Favorites Of The Week {a little of this and a little of that}

Happy weekend friends!

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait for spring to get here.  When I was driving home the other day I noticed that the The weather in my neck of the woods as been all over the place.  One day it’s 40 degrees and the next day it’s 70.  I need mother nature to settle down and bring us some consistent warmth and lots of sunshine.

Until then, enjoy a few of my favorites from the week.

Tile Trend: Dynamic Tile In The Kitchen (plus design tips)

Statement Tile In The Kitchen

Even though Pantone’s colors of the year and soft, subtle and pastel, the trend in kitchen design is bold and dynamic.  You’re seeing more and more kitchens  moving away from classic white subway tile and using larger design in big patterns and fun colors.

While patterned tile isn’t for everyone, it’s a great way to enhance your kitchen walls.  Here’s some inspiration:

I recently went on the hunt for some patterned tile and found lots of great options.

Both Home Depot and Lowes have a nice selection of classic patterns and their prices are really good.  Another great source is Overstock.com which I recently discovered has a large selection of decorative tile.

Here’s a round-up of some of my favorites…

#1  Merola Twenties Classic  from Home Depot.  Check out how amazing this looks in Cassie’s kitchen.
#2 Merola Twenties Crest.  Amazing price for such style.
#3 This Revival Memory tile is the perfect accent for a french country-style kitchen.
#4  I love the soft hue of  Kings Seagate and think it would look great on walls or on the floor.
#5 This Agdal Blue and Grey Tile is just one of the dynamic patterns they sell on Overstock.
#6  If you love blue and white in the kitchen, this Somer Tile is great.
#7  The color combination in this Borough Mondo is one of my favorites for a kitchen.
#8  Black accent tile like this Argana Black and Grey is a classic that will work in any kitchen.
#9  And maybe my favorite black and white tile of all times, Medina Black and White Ceramic.

Design Tips for Tiling Your Kitchen:

  • A complex or colorful backslash looks best with solid counters–that way they don’t clash with each other.
  • Wrapping the backsplash around the entire room gives a sense of visual continuity, which can help a small space seem large.
  • Changing the orientation of run-of-the-mill subway tile can create an expensive look for less. Run the tile vertically for a modern look or lay it on a diagonal in a place you want as a focal point, such as cooking areas.
  • Before you install a backsplash, try “walking” tiles up a wall to make sure you aren’t left with a thin sliver where the tile meets cabinetry. Hold the tiles against the wall at the bottom of the backsplash area and move them hand over hand up the wall following your desired pattern until you get to the top. You may find you have to start with a half-tile at the bottom to be sure at least a quarter-tile fits at the top.

When it comes to kitchen design, is your style clean and classic or do you like a bold statement?

The Anatomy of a Kitchen Island

 Kitchen Island2

via

Have you ever walked into someone’s kitchen or toured a model home kitchen and felt like the kitchen island was nothing more than a big box that took up space in the center of the room?

I was in a kitchen recently and the island stood our like an eyesore.  There were no design details on the island and the only real function the island served was for food prep.

When you think about it, a kitchen island is basically a big rectangle or square box, sometimes with functional elements built-in and other times not.  It can be a free-floating, movable element or a built-in design.

The kitchen I was in got me thinking about creative way to add style and function to a large kitchen island so today I want to highlight a few design and architectural ideas to give a plain island style and personality.

Butcher Block Counters–So Many Reasons to Love Them!

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve poured over images of kitchens with butcher block counters.  I’m working on a design proposal for a client and hope to persuade them in to moving away from granite and going with wood.  I for one love the look of butcher block counters but I understand that not everyone is on the same page as me.  Selling my client on this look may be difficult but once I share with them the benefits of butcher block I think I can win them over.  Here’s what I’m going to tell them…

Slide1

**  Butcher block counters are extremely affordable.

**  Butcher block counters can be used in traditional, modern, french country or farm style kitchens–their look is versatile.

**  You can paint your cabinets ANY color when using butcher block cabinets–there is no coordinating with a stone or granite color.

**  Butcher block counters add natural warmth and beauty to a kitchen.

**  Unlike some granite patterns, butcher block counters never go out of style.

**  If wear and tear happens over the years, butcher block counters can be sanded down and refinished–other materials would have to be replaced.

**  Butcher block counters can be environmentally friendly is you use reclaimed wood.

**  They are a fairly easy DIY project which will save even more $$$$.

And they are just darn pretty!

While it was once the king of  countertops, over the last few years I’ve seen more and more people move away from granite. People are recognizing that surfaces like butcher block , quartz,  marble, stainless steel and concrete can give a kitchen just as much style as granite can.

Do you like the look of wood counters or are you faithful to granite?  I’d love to know.
