Remember when this look was in style…..

As a designer, I’m often asked by clients and friends about whether a particular color, fabric or materials is in or out of style.  On the surface that might be a hard question to answer because everything that’s in style will eventually go out of style and then most likely come back in style again.  The image above is from the early 70’s and the fabric and styling of that sofa are in demand today.  And the image below, also from the 70’s, is the tulip table and chairs are just as popular today as they were back then.

While styles and trends come and go, there are some design elements that I think fall into the timeless category and will always provide a classic look when decorating.

Want to know what those timeless trends are?

Well, here’s a look at Ten Trends That Won’t Go Out Of Style…

Timeless Trends.001

Carrara Marble–because of the crisp white color, the classic veining detail and its versatility, Carrara Marble is one of the most classic stone materials you can use to decorate a kitchen or bathroom.

Plaid–whether on walls, on furniture or used in textiles, plaid patterns are definitely classic and timeless.  One of the best things about plaid is that there are so many different size and color variations which gives you and opportunity to customize the look to fit your decor.

White Kitchens–about 10 years ago white kitchens were the look you saw most often in kitchen decor.  Then color starting popping up and colors like grey were the trend.  While white kitchen never really went out of style, they are back in a big way and are even more popular than ever.  The look is classic and will be around for ages.

Crown Molding–on the list of classic design details, crown molding is definitely towards the top of the list.  Crown molding adds character and detail and defines the visual impact of a room or space.

Striped Walls–up, down, variegated or symmetrical, striped walls are truly timeless.  Stripes are a great way to make a low ceiling feel tall and a small room feel bigger.  Tone-on-tone stripes offer the most versatility when decorating but if color is your thing then don’t be afraid to add  colorful striped wall in your home.

Navy–Navy is the new black, or at least it seems that way.  Navy is one of the most compatible colors to use in decor because it pairs great with warms or cool colors.  Today, classic blue and white decor is a hot trend which speaks to the classic appeal of navy.

Crystal Chandeliers-back in the day, crystal chandeliers were found only in the large mansions and estates that belonged to royalty or the rich and famous.  And back then they were super sized and extremely ornate. The look of chandeliers has changed a bit but bling is back and crystal lighting is now appropriate for just about every room in the home.

Metallics–I remember my parents house in the 70’s had loads of shiny finishes and brass accessories.  Lamps like the ones below were popular look and are proof that what goes around comes around because this look is popular today too.  Silver finishes may be popular one day and gold the next but metallics are timeless.

White Glassware–Here’s another look I remember seeing in my parents house when I was young.  White ceramics and glassware is another versatile decor statement that will be around forever.

Velvet–How many of you remember sitting on a mustard yellow velvet sofa at your house or a friends when you were  young?  I certainly do.  Along the way, velvet lost some of its appeal and more casual fabrics were what people wanted in their homes.  Velvet never went out of style, it was just less visible in decor but it has come back and is more popular than ever today.

Although I love all of these timeless trends, I always tell people to decorate with the things they love, so if shag carpet and a red kitchen are your thing then go for it.

So what do you think of these timeless trends?  Any you’d like to see go away forever?
