If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, Design is in the Details. And that’s one of the things I love about design. The fact that you can take a basic ordinary architectural element, accessory, furniture piece or decorative element and use it to create something unique and beautiful for your home. I’m working on a project that is requiring me to think about details and how they can be used to transform a space and save money at the same time. With details on my mind I thought I’d share 11 of my favorite ideas, ideas you can use in your own home.
Painted Interior Doors
Paint, paint, paint. It is indeed the cheapest way to change the look of your home. A trend that seems to be here to stay are painted interior doors. I love this look and how instantly it adds drama and visual impact to a space. While grey or black are my preferred painted door colors you really can’t go wrong with any color you choose as long as it compliments with the rest of your décor.
Ceiling Medallions
Ceiling medallions are one design detail that I don’t feel gets used as much as it should. A decorative medallion or even a paint treatment to resemble one is a great way to draw the eye up into a room and make a simple light fixture look more grand. Besides traditional ceiling medallions, mirrors, wall grills or other architectural pieces can be used to accent your ceiling.
{if you’re really crafty, you could create the look above by cutting the design out of cardboard or a sheet of veneer and spray painting it gold}
Brass Hardware
Years ago if you asked me to choose between silver and gold, silver would have won hands down. Today I am loving all things gold. Gold jewelry and gold and brass hardware for the home. There is just something so classic and stylish about brass fixture and lighting and I love how this finish makes a room feel chic and more expensive.
Dutch Doors
There is just something so charming about a dutch door that makes a house feel cozier and more welcoming. I think for those of you that live in milder climates, a dutch door is a great way to add personality and style to your home, style that is reflected both on the outside as well as the inside.
Seagrass and Animal Skin Rugs
The combination of a seagrass rug and animal skin has become such a classic design look in so many homes. The texture of the seagrass and the organic feel of the skin is a perfect way to add visual layers within your décor while still keeping the look simple.
Black and White Chairs
I think of all the patterned chair options out there, a black and white pattern is a no-fail option. Black and white works in almost every setting and a classic stripe is a great way to add bold impact to a room.
Wallpapered Powder Room
The wallpaper trend is hot, hot, hot and while I am not full room of wallpaper type of person, I do love it used in a powder room. A patterned paper is a great way to enliven a basic bathroom and make it feel larger and more open.
Black Stair Railing and Risers
With just about every client I’ve worked with in the last year, I’ve recommended painting the stair rails ebony or black. I love how a dark rail, spindles and even the riser create a dramatic statement and really define the staircase.
Letters on the Wall
I have monograms hung on several walls in my home but not in mass like this. I’m loving the look and think this is a fresh interpretation of a gallery wall look for your home. Getting creative with the styles, materials and sizes will guarantee a fun and personalized wall décor statement for your home.
Gold Painted Chair
I’m on the hunt (have been for a while) for a classic chair with a wood frame that I can paint gold. In the same way that black helps to visually ground a space, I think an accent of gold add a stylish touch to any room.
Dalmatian Print
Have you noticed that Dalmatian prints are everywhere? This imperfect dot pattern is fast coming a neutral in the décor world. I love the idea of using it as a bold accent on a wall or as simple as a pillow accent on the sofa. A touch of black and white, geometric and abstract always works.
Gold Lined Lampshades
I’ve always been a fan of black lampshade and think they look best with some type of decorative or colored liner. A gold liner adds that touch of glam and creates a beautiful glow when the light is on. Plus a gold liner can make a thrift store shade look like a million bucks. Creating a home full of design details doesn’t have to take a lot of time or a lot of money and it really is the thing that will make your home stand out in a crowd.
Happy Decorating!
