How often do you get asked what you design style is, what style of home you love or where you eventually want to retire? As a designer I get asked those questions often and thought I’d share a bit about my dream home with you today here on the blog.
To give you a bit of background, I was born in Oklahoma but moved to Washington state when I was around 6. My dad worked for the government and his job took us to a small town in Washington called Moses Lake. Moses Lake sits on the edge of a beautiful lake that has 120 miles of shoreline and is one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the state.
Moses Lake Washington isn’t a terribly large city. According to the 2010 census, approximately 20,000 people call it home so you can only imagine how small it was when I lived there over 30 years ago.
Anyhow, living in a lake town instilled a love of water that has lingered with me my entire life. I love swimming, the beach, boating, waterskiing (although I’m not great at it) and I even like fishing.
As an adult I lived in Seattle and then the hubby and I moved to Atlanta. All of the homes we’ve owned have been traditional in style and none of them have been my dream home.
So what does my dream home look like you ask?
Well, my dream home is a Cape Cod style home sitting of the edge of the water with close access to a beach!
There is just something about the style of a Cape Cod home that I love. The cedar shake shingles give the home a warm and welcoming feel and add so much exterior character.
I love the different roof lines that Cape Cod style homes have and the charming details like old wood shutters, over sized french doors and copper weather vanes.
Tall ceilings, exposed beams and wood floors are style details that give off a high-style vibe but at the same time make the interior rooms feel open, airy and down-home.
I would cherish a window seat where you could take in the view and soak up the sun.
My Cape Cod style dream home would have large windows on every level and no window treatments.
And built-in bunk beds because they are just too cute.
As you moved to the outside of my dream home, there’d be tons of hydrangea bushes with a few gardenia trees sprinkled into the mix.
There would be a little cottage out back which would be my creative space.
An ample outdoor seating and lounging areas so we could have an open door policy and entertain every night. I’d long for a pool but a fire pit would do since the beach is just a short distance away.
And there would have to be a private sitting area so the hubs and I could watch the sunrise and set.

This is dreamy! My aunt worked for a family who lived in a cape cod. It was white, expansive and just as you pictured here. When I would ride with my dad to pick her up (in her pristine grey and white uniform) she would let me come in to see the beauty. I shall never forget my first experience of how the “haves” lived. The house still stands today in my home town and every time I go home, I drive by there. The neighborhood is a historical landmark today. Thanks for sharing your dream home and I will be visiting you there some day soon.

Shelly,
I would have the same house, but on a smaller scale. I would love to have a cottage behind the house as well. Isn’t it nice to dream? Have a great day!

It sure is nice to dream Jill. And I’ll take my dream house in any size as long as it’s in the water
