It’s hard to believe that six weeks ago the One Room Challenge started and now we are at the finish line with reveal day. The last 5 weeks have been a blur with lots of projects completed as we transformed our master bedroom. I am thrilled with how the room turned out and excited to share it with you today. To get caught up on the progress up to today, click the links at the end of this post.
Before I share all of the pretty pictures, I want to remind you of where the room started. We moved into our townhome about two years ago and while I’ve gotten most of the house decorated, our master bedroom was a bland box. We purchased the armoire when we lived in Seattle and after moving to Atlanta we painted it black. The bed, dresser and bamboo nightstand were purchased here in Atlanta.
Here are some before photos of the room (yikes)….
And in five weeks the room was transformed into this this beauty…
Traditional With Flair Master Bedroom
What a transformation! (fyi–I’ve included a full source list of all the items in the room at the end of the post)
The inspiration for the bedroom was the gorgeous Floralista Wallpaper by designer Hollis Zollinger for Spoonflower (purchased through Etsy). In the early stages of planning I was trying to decide between two different wallpaper designs and couldn’t decide. Both Mr. Confetti and I were torn between the two so I asked my followers on IG to vote. The vote was really close and to be honest the other design won by a slight margin. In the end I chose the Floralista because it’s more our style and I love the whimsical feel of the design.
Once I had the wallpaper nailed down I was able to pull the other elements of the bedroom together. I found the blush pink drapes on Wayfair and pondered if they would match the pink in the wallpaper. They were a perfect match and highlight the lighter shades in the pattern. I hung the drapes from brass curtain rods and love how the brass compliments the gold tones in the wallpaper.
” Design Tip: When using accent colors in a room, strive to have that color/finish represented three times in the room. When the color shows up in multiple places it will feel intentional versus an unrelated detail.
This beautiful Lady In The Fields art piece was purchased by my mom in Africa over 25 years ago and is a treasured piece.
Once I had the drapes I set about to find bedding. I purchased the blush euro shams only to get home and find see that they matched the curtain color spot on. I used an ivory textured coverlet over the bed and draped a grey blanket at the foot of the bed. The lighter grey blanket adds another level of contrast within the room while still relating back to the wallpaper background. The pink fluffy throw adds even more texture and coziness.
As a way to highlight the teal in the wallpaper, I made a long bolster pillow with gold fringe. It’s been a long time since I’ve used my sewing machine but thankfully I haven’t lost my skills.
Design Is In The Details
One of my favorite additions to the room is the vintage chair I found at a thrift store. My original plan was to paint it teal but I felt that would be a bit to playful for the style of chair. I settled on painting it a metallic gold and absolutely love how it looks. While the chair is totally functional, I’ve used it to hold a few design books I’m reading.
Our bedroom doesn’t have a lot of wall space for artwork so one of the ways I incorporated art was on my nightstand. I have this gorgeous Eva’s Bouquet floral art by Lindsay Letters propped on a wood easel and think it’s perfection. Throughout the room I’ve also accessorized with vintage brass pieces I’ve found at antique and thrift stores.
Let There Be Light
Another highlight of the bedroom is the gorgeous brass chandelier we hung. The chandelier replaced a black ceiling fan and man was that change a good idea. If you can forgo a ceiling fan in the bedroom, a chandelier is a much prettier option. The light fixture is bold and commands attention without being too heavy and overbearing for the room. The addition of the decorative ceiling tile was the perfect finishing touch.
” Design Tip: Ceiling medallions are a budget friendly way to add architecture interest to a ceiling. They draw the eye up in rooms with high ceilings and create the impression of height in rooms with lower ceiling. Plus they are easy to install and can be painted in any color you want.
Here’s an unclose of both the ceiling tile and chandelier. What a gorgeous combo!
We decided to hang our TV on the wall and I love that I now have space on the top of the dresser for some pretty decor. To add interest to the wall, I hung three framed art pieces above the TV. The art I choose pulls colors from the wallpaper and adds a modern touch to the room. All three art pieces cost less than $15.
We have large armoire that sits on a wall adjacent to the dresser. The armoire serves as our linen closet since there isn’t one built into the bathroom. I’ll be sharing how I organized and styled the inside the armoire soon.
I placed a group of three white ginger jars on the top of armoire to give it some style and to add more interest to this corner. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of ginger jars and have them in just about every room in the house.
” Design Tip: Don’t overlook the tops of armoires or bookcases when decorating. The space is a great area to add a faux plant, decorative containers or baskets.
The One Room Challenge has been lots of fun but I’m happy to finally have our bedroom back and to have it looking so good!
Before I sign off, I wanted to say a big Thank You to Linda from Calling It Home for creating such a wonderful event in the One Room Challenge (ORC). Along with media partner Better Homes and Gardens, the ORC has become an amazing source of design inspiration. I’m beyond inspired by the spaces that have been created by the featured designers and guest participants. Cheers to everyone that took on the challenge and created something beautiful!
