I’ve been working with a new client and their design project is really exciting because it involves one of my favorite color crushes…blue and green.
While navy has always been a much-used color in home decor, it has been resurfacing as a hot color trend over the last couple of years. And ever since Pantone named Emerald Green as their color of the year in 2013, shades of green have been making a comeback as one of the top home decor fashion colors.
What I like about the combination of blue and green is the sophisticated yet modern feel that pairing has.
On a recent fabric shopping trip, I spotted some really beautiful blue and green fabrics I wanted to share with you. I’ve grouped the designs together in workable sets that can easily be combined within a single room design. Here’s how I’d use each of the fabrics within the groupings:
Group 1 is made of soft shades of green and muted aqua blue tones. I envision the Cape Cosmo being used as pillow, the Medina So Kind as drapery and the Isis on an accent chair.
Group 2 plays up navy and blue a bit more and has more of an eclectic feel. In as bedroom I could see the Suzani as a duvet cover, The Madrid as drapes and the Balmoral on an ottoman or vanity chair seat.
Group 3 is my favorite and really makes a strong statement with navy. This is the fabric grouping I’m suggesting for my clients family room. The Teahouse fabric would be used on an accent chair, the Marquise Navy would cover a sofa and the Damask Denim would be drapes within the room. I could even see the Cosmo fabric from the group 1 folding into this collection as another accent fabric. Such a pretty combo right?

When it comes to fabric combos for your home, here are a few tips for paring patterns like a pro:
Tip: Mixing various types of patterns is a good way to get started with your pattern mix. Think florals with stripes and a geometric.
Tip: varying the scale of your patterns–set small patterns against large ones and include solids into the mix.
Tip: As a general rule, a good mix includes a small, a medium, and a large-scale pattern. Ideally, each pattern or the fabric’s color should be repeated at least once in the room.
Tip: Don’t feel compelled to match colors perfectly. Choose colors that blend beautifully and make sure all of your patterns have at least one color that is similar, even if it is a background or neutral.
Tip: Finally, in a room with multiple patterns, make sure there’s a place for the eye to rest. It could be a small solid colored pillow on a chair or a solid colored ottoman. Solid accents help separate and highlight the patterns while helping to visually ground the room.
