Daily Dose of Design–Stylish Bookcases

I can’t tell you how many times I go into homes and see bookcases that lack any design direction.  Bookcases need to serve two purposes when it comes to design, one as a functional storage space, and the other as a place to display accessories.

For a lot of homeowners, creating bookcase displays that look good and function well is a hard task.  Check out these bookcase images and take note of how the two purposes work together to create great looking bookcase arrangements.

Your bookcases can showcase a few things or a lot of items and still look good.  I love the sea inspired theme on the shelving unit above.  A theme can give your bookshelves a point of view.  For shelves where a variety of items are used (below), vary the shapes and sizes of the items to create a more eclectic look.

Nine times out of ten, I recommend that homeowners paint the backs of their bookcases.  Typically a shade lighter or darker than your wall color works great, or if your adventurous go for a bold color.

Try incorporating unexpected pieces like antique luggage or tabletop items to make your shelf displays more personal.

A collection of pottery works great to accessorize bookshelves since they provide visual weight and interesting shape to the arrangement.

Simplicity can be sophisticated too.  I love the collection of painted frames that give this bookcase its unique style.

And of course books are a must on bookshelves.  Stack them vertically or horizontally, or mix it up.

Bookshelves can be their own design statement.  A variety of old tables, painted a single color are stacked atop each other to create this artist look.

When it comes to accessories for bookshelves, I recommend a few of the following:

*  Baskets–they add texture and visual weight

*  Frames–when decorating with multiple frames, I tend to use frames that are the same color to provide consistency, but vary the shapes, sizes and details for interest.

*  Books–taking the paper covers off hardback books is give your shelves a more streamlined look.  And, for added style, I love wrapping my books in decorative paper or fabric.

*  Pottery and Glass Spheres–Incorporating items that are round provide a good contrast to the angular shape of the shelves.

*  Found Objects or a Collection piece–anything that personalizes your shelves will make them more inviting.
