Every season I do a little refresh of the bed linens on our bed. I like to change things up a bit to reflect the colors of the season and how I’m feeling.
With the onset of fall it was time for the pink and red pillows to move out and rich, warm colors to move in.
The foundation of my bedding ensemble is black and white and since I love that color combination I decided the coverlet and black shams would stay.
A quick trip to HomeGoods yielded the perfect fall pillows…a watercolor pattern, rich color and lots of texture.
The watercolor floral pillow was the jumping off point for my pillow selection. I just love the mix of colors and that beaded flower image, both of which remind me of fall. The gold pillows are made of an embossed chenille and are so soft and comfy. The black and white pillow is the infamous Ikea pillow which I moved from the ottoman at the foot of the bed.
To add even more color and texture I layered a textured burgundy throw over the black bedspread at the foot of the bed. The color of the throw ties in beautifully withe the water-color pillow and some of the artwork in the room.
Switching out pillows is an inexpensive way to change for look and feel of a space each season and I couldn’t be happier with the palette I created for fall.
Pillow Decorating Tips:
-
Arrangement—For eclectic or modern decor, group accent pillows in sets of odd numbers: use three, five or seven pillows in a room. Using asymmetrical groups is a common interior design rule for nontraditional decor; the room will feel more visually balanced. Vary the pillows’ size and pattern. If you want a more traditional, symmetrical look, use even numbers.
-
Size and shape—Vary the shapes and sizes of throw pillows. Standard pillows measure 18 inches by 18 inches. Add a contrasting shape or size into a pillow grouping for additional interest.
- Fabric—Vary your throw pillows’ textures and textiles for a rich yet subtle mix. Use fabrics from plush velvets to smooth silks. Mix and match pillows: pair stripes and plaids together or combine solid and floral designs.
- Color–– Choose pillow colors by looking at fabric, artwork and other accents in the room. Decide on a common accent color and match the color to a paint swatch. Use the swatch to compare different pillows when browsing online or shopping in stores. Pillows do not need to be an exact match. Some slight variation adds natural contrast and interest to the room. Add the accent color in a few other areas, including accessories, lampshades and other decorative items.
- Storage–Put a decorative basket or storage bin in the room to hold accent pillows when they’re not being used.
Happy Decorating!

It’s beautiful! What a gorgeous way to ready your bedroom for fall. I have to admit that it’s never occurred to me to bring my seasonal decorations into the bedroom. Shelly, you always show me beauty and it’s always my style. Thank you!

Hi Dana,
I’ve always added seasonal touches to areas of my home, beyond the main living areas. Give it a try. It doesn’t have to be anything major, just a little something to reflect the season.
When Christmas rolls around I’ve got some fun touches planned for the bedroom so stay tuned.
