Creative Jewelry Storage

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend.

I spent several hours this weekend, shopping antique stores and searching the web, on the hunt for a vintage dress form to use as a jewelry display piece.

While I didn’t find what I was looking for, I did come across some photos of  truly amazing and beautiful jewelry storage ideas.

If I don’t find my dress form, I just might have to adopt a few of these ideas.  Check them out.

Love how simple this storage idea is!

Vintage Chic! These vintage wooden spools can be found in just about any antique store these days.  I picked my one up this weekend for $6.50, without knowing what I was going to do with it.  Now I have an idea.

Love this look, and Anthropologie has a wonderful selection of knobs that would be perfect for this little project.

My Favorite Accessory Pieces–Classic and Timeless

My favorite part of decorating is accessorizing.

Accessories give a home its personality and make spaces come to life.  And, since there are so many accessories in the marketplace to choose from, the looks you can create are endless.  But, after years of decorating, there are  5 decorative accessories that stand out as my favorite accessory pieces

1)  Starburst Mirrors

I love how starburst mirrors add dimension and visual interest to a room. And, they are a great alternative to framed artwork.

2) Silver Trays

Whether hung on the wall or used as a tabletop piece, trays, especially silver ones add a touch of glam to a room.  A silver tray is also great to show a grouping of books or decorative objects.

I’m looking forward to attending the I Love Thrifting event here in Atlanta on Saturday, and hope to add a few new home accessories to my mix.  I’ll be sure to share my fabulous thrift shop finds with you next week.

Until then, have a great weekend !

Look What $50 (or less) Will Buy You

As a designer, I’ve always looked for great deals for my clients, trying to give them a lot of look for a little money.  Over the past few weeks as I shopped stores and on-line sites, I’ve uncovered some really fabulous deals on home accessories.  These aren’t plain and simple accessories, these are pieces with lots of style and panache.

Accessories are the icing on the cake when it comes to decorating your home.  Stylish accessories are what turns and ordinary looking decor into a design dream.

If you’re looking to update your home, on a budget, check out these stellar accessories, all under $50.00!

Vases and ceramic containers can be used in so many ways when it comes to decorating your home.  I love displaying a collection of  vases in a bookcase or  on top of a console table.  The Hive Vases from West Elm are priced between $24 and $34 and will add both color and texture to your accessory groupings.

When it comes to giving a solid color sofa or bedding a high-end look, decorative pillows are the go-to accessory.  Look for pillows with down filling for the most sumptuous look and always use colors and patterns that you love. This gorgeous Pom Pon Pillow is handmade and available from SimplydivinebyJoann via Etsy.  $30.00

Don’t just think large-scale when it comes to accessories, make sure to incorporate smaller  pieces into your decor to create interesting and balanced arrangements.  The ceramic owls from West Elm are the perfect accent on a nightstand, foyer table or even a vanity counter and are a great price at $9 and $16.

I think every home needs candlelight and beautiful candleholders to place the candles in.  These porcelain hurricanes will work with any design style and can even be used as part of your outdoor decor.  Small available for $19 and large $49, from West Elm.

I love Buddha’s and this all-white sitting buddha from Z Gallerie is fab.  A piece like this is the perfect accessory for a bookcase or tabletop.  And for $39.95 this piece will really elevate your decorative statement.

Coffee tables and dining tables call for a decorative bowl like this one.  Sit a piece like this on top of a stack of books on the coffee table or fill it with flowers on the dining table for high impact.  And, you’ll never believe it’s only $20, from Pier 1.

Everyone that has a decorative tray in their home raise their hand!  And, everyone who doesn’t needs to rush to the nearest Crate and Barrel and pick up this Artesia Tray for $29.95. Trays can be used on just about any table or counter surface in your home and will add depth and dimension, along with style.

Adding unusual artwork to your home is one of the easiest ways to give it personality and flair. And, groupings for related images make an art collection seem more expensive and high-end.  I love these Framed Vintage Chair Prints from Pottery Barn and at $49 for the set of 3, this is definitely value for the money.

If you’re looking to add a stylish trend item to your home this season, look no further than this hand-carved wood vessel.  It can be used to hold anything, but I’d love to use it as unique container in an office or creative space. Or how about holding rolled up face towels in a bathroom?  They were such a hit at Pottery Barn that the small is sold out, but the large size is a great value at $34.99.

Wall sconces, whether lighted or candle, add so much style to a home.  Flank a piece of artwork with sconces or place a pair along the side of a mirror.  When looking for sconces, mirrored backs on this one from Ballard Designs will bring added style to your decor…all for $49 bucks!

So you know I love vintage pieces, especially ones that have been updated with a little paint and tender loving care.  This collection of vintage wall frames offers up so many decorating possibilities.  I love them as a collection by themselves or mixed among framed pieces of art.  They are the perfect statement to hang along a staircase wall or in an office.  For $38 this entire collection can be yours, available from KristinandJenney via Etsy.

Unique frames are on my shopping list for the upcoming I Love Thrifting shopping event, spearhead by the fabulous blogger and designer, Rashon Carraway of Mr. Goodwill Hunting.  Check out his ILoveThrifting website for all the details!

Wow, wow, wow!  Aren’t these vase gorgeous?  Glass vases are an essential element of any home decor collection, and vintage inspired etched pieces like this add regal elegance to any tabletop. Glass vase make great flower containers or candleholders.  I even love them in a bathroom, filled with soap bars. These man and woman silhouette vases are on $34.99 from Ballard Designs.

And finally, another stylish pillow, this one from CB2, is the perfect accent for a side chair, chaise lounge or sofa.  The abstract design and mix of colors in this Streak Pillow will brighten up your home is a flash, especially at $19.95…buy two!

As you can see, accessorizing your home with style and flair does not have to cost a fortune!

This holiday weekend, why not update your look for $50 or less!

Happy Shopping.

Accessorizing the FIVE Impact Areas Of Your Home

I have always been of the belief that most people can manage the task of picking out the large furniture pieces needed to decorate their home, but struggle when it comes to adding the finishing touches that make the home come to life.

After seeing lots of homes that lack those finishing touches, I developed a workshop that I taught in my store, entitled “Accessorizing The Five Impact Areas of Your Home”.  The workshop focused on the key areas that need accessories and how best to accessorize those areas.

Recently, I’ve received several emails from readers with questions related to accessorizing your home, so  I thought I share my workshop tips with you.  Whether you’re just starting out accessorizing your home, or are in the midst of getting it all together, here’s a few things to keep in mind.

Tabletops

  • Consider how the surface area will be use–do you need open areas to complete a specific task or is the area for decorative display only?
  • Analyze the theme of the room and add accessories that tie into that theme
  • Use color and pattern to unify the accessory arrangement
  • Create a focal point within your accessory groupings–make sure the one element grabs the eye first
  • Vary the heights, textures and materials within your accessory groupings for visual interest and personality
  • Use greenery or flowers to add softness

Using trays to hold a collection of accessories is a great way to add impact to a coffee table surface

In this arrangement, the lamp and flower provide equal balance & the purple vase adds that eye-catching pop of color.

And, don’t forget to accessorize under the table as well!

Mantles

  • Determine your decorating style–Formal styles tend to work best with Symmetrical arrangements (identical elements on each side), and casual styles often work with best Asymmetrical arrangements (different elements on each side, but they balance each other)
  • Hang mirrors or artwork 5 to 8 inches above the mantle–you don’t want the mirror hung so high that it feels disconnected with the fireplace
  • If you have tall ceilings, play that up with oversized pieces or art or a mirror

Round mirrors are a great contrast within rooms that typically have lots of square or rectangular features

Laying decorative elements atop your mantle will add depth and dimension

The art grabs your attention, the collection of pieces add personality and the branches add movement and style

Dining Rooms

  • Relate your decor to the style of your table and chairs
  • Hang a chandelier that makes a statement and becomes the focal point of the room, and add a dimmer to control the ambience of the space
  • The bottom of your chandelier should be 30″ to 36″ above the table surface
  • Allow 24″ for each place setting at the table, to make sure every person has adequate room to eat and move
  • Allow 32″ between the chair and the wall or furniture behind it, so that chairs can be pulled out comfortably
  • When setting your table, use this trick to remember how to arrange your silverware:  RIGHT (5 letters) is where you place your KNIFE and SPOON (5 letters).  The LEFT (4 letters) is where you place your FORK (4 letters).

A non-traditional chandelier adds instant personality and style & check out the mix of patterns that create the mood.

Dark walls are a great way to bring drama and make the space feel cozy

A space with its own distinct vibe–love those yellow chairs!

Sometimes two is better than one.  What a great entertaining space.

Foyers

  • Use furniture, paint or wall paper to define the space
  • Add a floor treatment to give your foyer an identity
  • Use mirrors to make a small foyer seem bigger
  • Incorporate texture and pattern for visual interest
  • Your foyer should create a dynamic first impression for your home

This painted floor draws in you and grabs your attention!  And I love the idea of a loveseat versus chairs.

A bold mirror in a bold color–what a way to make a statement.  The teal trunk is the perfect finishing touch.

An unexpected floor treatment that really makes this foyer stand out.  And those grass cloth walls are to die for.

Wallpaper creates the frame for this simple, yet beautiful space.

Sofas and Chairs

  • Pillows are like icing on the cake–they give your sofa character and make it come to life
  • Down filled pillows are simply the best
  • When having custom pillows made, use a contrast fabric on the back so that you make change the look when the mood strikes
  • The ideal pattern mix:  Stripe, Solid, Pattern, Texture
  • p.s.  Position your sofa approx. 18″ away from the coffee table so the leg room is comfortable

Bold contrast in your pillows will make the sofa pop.  The colors ties back to the furnitur and accessories within the space.

The blue from the rug and cushions in the back space are pulled forward onto the white chairs via the pillow trim.

A mix of colorful pillows, using colors found throughout the room

When it comes to accessorizing your home, I believe the best way to make your home come to life is …

  • use things you love
  • use color to add energy
  • variety is the spice of life–mix it up a bit
  • throw in something unexpected
  • reflect your personality!

Happy Decorating!

Stylish Coffee Table Decor

via Tobi Fairley

As one of the most used surfaces in your home, the coffee table is definitely a split-personality pieces of furniture.  Coffee tables need to be a functional work surface, a decorative display surface and often act as additional seating, among many other things.

via Casasugar
Decorating the coffee table is one of the most common challenges I see clients facing.  They are challenged by what to put on the coffee table, what scale of items to use, how to combine multiple pieces together, and how much stuff, is too much stuff.

Via Elle Decor

Accessorizing is one of the things I love most about decorating, and styling a coffee table is at the top of my list.  Here are a few tips and tricks I use when decorating coffee tables:

via southerninspirations
  •  Determine what Function your Coffee Table needs To Serve.  Is the table used by the kids to do homework, is it used as a foot rest or do you use your coffee table for causal meals in front of the tv?  Evaluating how your coffee table is used will help in selecting not only the type to table you need, but the type of accessories that will work best for you.

via decorpad
  •  Accessorize with Scale in Mind.  I always use several items in different sizes and scale when decorating coffee tables.  You want to avoid having all the items on your table surface to be the same height or visual weight.  Combining items with different heights, width and mass will give your table more style and interest.

via country living
  • Mix I Up.  When selecting items to decorate your coffee table, mix materials, finishes, and textures to give your display more interest.  I love combining a natural material like wood or woven rattan with something metallic and smooth.  Or a ceramic piece with a rustic stone or iron piece. Coffee tables are also a great spot to mix style…combine an ethnic piece with modern accessories.

  • Don’t Cover Every Inch of Surface.  In most cases, leaving a bit of “breathing room” on the surface of your coffeee table will make the display feel real and natural.  Plus, you’ll have room to place functional items like remotes, drinkware or magazines.

via Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, photo by Erica Geroges Dine
  • Select a Focal Item.  This is where scale really comes into play.  You want one of the elements on your coffee table to be dominate.  Maybe it’s an oversized vase or a larger decorative box….whatever the item, you want there to be a place for the eye to land when it takes in the coffee table decor.

via House Beautiful, photo by Julian Wass
  • Use Coffee Table Books.  Books are one of the most versatile decorative elements to dress your coffee table with.  Not only do books add depth and dimension, but the surface can be used as display space for a smaller decorative item, giving them more impact and presence.

via Elle Decor, photo by Simon Upton
  • Add Ambience with Candles.  I love incorporating a candle into my coffee table decor.  Whether you go with a glass hurricane or a smaller candle container, candles give your table decor a sense of comfort.

via Barclay Butera

And lastly,

  • Use Trays for Function and Style.  Trays of all types are the perfect layering element for coffee table decor.  Place your decorative elements atop a tray and you can easily remove it when the entire table surface space is needed.  And, it your coffee table happens to be a fabric covered ottoman, or even an old army cot like the photo below, trays provide the hard surface you need to make the coffee table function well.

Accessories–The Key Ingredient

In the process of setting up my home design office, I came across the handouts I created for the design workshops I conducted in my store.

As I looked through the files, I found a handout for a workshop entitled The Ten Decorative Accessories Every Home Needs.  This was one of my most popular workshops, and reading through the material reminded me just how important accessories are to the overall feel of a room.

via My Home Ideas
With the re-decorating of my master bedroom in full swing, I know I need to accessorize the right way, in order to achieve the look and feel I want. So, as a friendly reminder to myself, and a bit of inspiration for you, here is a condensed version of  my workshop….

THE TEN DECORATIVE ACCESSORIES EVERY HOME NEEDS!

Just like a recipe, every design plan has key ingredients that are needed to make a complete design statement.  Without these key ingredients, the recipe or design of your room will not hold together. While not every room in your home will incorporate the essential accessory items, most should!

1.  Picture Frames–Whether you hang them on the wall or use them on tabletop surfaces, frames are a great way to personalize a space.  As a general rule of thumb, I always like to use frames of the same color, but vary the shapes and sizes for visual interest.  Uniformity of color will give your photo arrangements more impact.

 via Easy Peasy Chic

2.  Baskets–Nothing breaks up the flow of  a well designed space more than clutter.  And, baskets are a great way to contain clutter.  Use baskets to hold the things you use on a daily basis, while providing a decorative statement and a touch of texture to your space.

via My Home Ideas
I must admit, I am the basket queen.  I use them in every room, and especially like lidded styles so my “stuff” is hidden.
  via Inspiring Interiors

3.  Greenery–It doesn’t matter whether you are a “faux” or “real” greenery person as long as you use greenery as a decorative element when you decorate.  Not only does greenery provide an element of nature, but it also provides visual softness to a space.   And remember, if you’re not a plant persons, flowers can substitute for greenery any day.

Cottage Living via Cozy Cottage Cute

4.  Books–The wonder accessory!  Books are such an easy, practical and stylish way to accessorize your home.  I love the personality that books add to a room and the subtle structure they can give to a bookshelf or tabletop. Stack ’em high  or stack ’em love, leave them raw or cover them in a beautiful paper!

Books also serve as the perfect riser upon which to display a decorative object.

via Tobi Fariley

via All Things Home

5.  Pillows–One of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to add style to your bed or furnishings is via pillows.  When decorating with pillows, grouping different shapes, patterns and/or textures will provide the most visual impact.

Coastal Living via My Home Ideas
via Trendszine
Elle Decor via Decor Pad
Quick tip:  If you sew and want to make pillows quick, try using decorative dinner napkins as your shell.  They are already square and many measure 12″ x 12″ , the perfect size for a small accent pillow.

6.  Blankets & Throws–The perfect layering element.  To really make a room come to life, you need to incorporate layers throughout the space. A throw draped over a sofa back or chair arm is a great way to add layers within your decor.  Use a bold accent color or one that has a wonderful texture to bring your space to life.

Check out the pattern mixing going on in this room…Lovely!

7.  Artwork–Every home needs wall decor/artwork to give a sense of personalization and visual interest for the eye.  To achieve a stylish and eclectic look, mix traditional framed art with 3-dimensional wall decor or mirrors.

 via Decor Pad

8.  A Unique Furniture PieceWhile most rooms have a defined style, every room needs an unexpected element to make it stand out.  A unique piece of furniture (the shape, the color, the material) will give your space character and sass!

I love the use of  oversized accent tables as night stands in a bedroom.
via House Beautiful

 9.  Candles–Candles are luxurious, provide ambience, add light, infuse scent and are mood enhancing. Using scented candles in your home will engage all your senses and create a feeling of relaxation.

via Coastal Living

   10. Great Lighting–Nothing makes a room feel sad more than a lack of lighting or the wrong lighting.  When it comes to decorating, position lights in three corners of the room, so that the space can function well and provides a warm wash of  light over the entire space.  And, don’t think your light fixtures all have to match–mixing styles will make your room feel more vibrant and stylized.

Remember, when it comes to decorating your home, the big picture definitely counts, but it’s the details that really matter!

Do you have a favorite accessory item?

Atlanta Home & Gift Show–Part 2

Here’s a look at some of the other hot items I spyed at the Atlanta Home & Gift Show.

Mercury Glass statements were everywhere and are literally getting bigger and bolder.  These lovely containers and vases from Go Home Ltd. were oversized and dynamic.

The vase measured about 18″h and about 12″ in diameter and was simply stunning.

*********

In the Lighting arena, larger than life was a key theme.  I saw oversized pendants everywhere and tabletop lamps were taller, with larger shades.  As for the color and material of choice, rustic, aged and worn were the trends.

This pendant was crafted from an antique apple barrel and weathered and worn to perfection.  I can just imagine this beauty over the dining table in a Nantucket cottage.

This industrial looking pendant was forged from iron and had the perfect rusted patina finish.

********

Furniture statement at the ATL show were grand.  Again, weathered and washed finishes took center stage, right along side distressed white surfaces.

This antique book cabinet was breathtaking.

Guildmaster is one of the most innovation furniture companies out.  These stylish chairs were one of many new introductions they had at market.  I love the interlaced back and the distressed finish.

Iron details were incorporated into alot of the furniture pieces being show at market.  This cabinet had decorative iron cross-bars framing the upper doors.

I wish I had more photos to share with you, but camera control was in full force.  Regardless, just know that there are lots of incredible products that will be on store shelves near you real soon!

Warmth in The Winter

I don’t know about your, but every year when the Christmas tree comes down (mine is finally down), the twinkling lights get boxed up and the holiday Cd’s go back in their storage place, my house always feels like it’s lacking a bit of warmth and coziness.

In order to get that cozy, comfy mojo back into my house during the bleak winter months, I purposely make a few changes to my décor….

I surround my self with colors the comfort me.
During the winter months, I love to add spice tone accents to my decor.  Brown, orange or red pillows, an amber-colored throw or even a bouquet of red flowers will instantly warm up a room.

I pull out my favorite books and use them as a decorative focal point.
There’s nothing more that I love during the cold winter months, than to curl up in a chair with one of my  favorite design books and a cup of tea.  An afternoon spent reading and dozing is an afternoon well spent in my book.  Try adding a stack of books next to your favorite chair, or placed a few in the center of your coffee table for a decorative and cozy feeling.

So long cotton sheets…hello flannel sheets.

I am one of those people who tends to be cold all the time.  I hate climbing into a cold bed, so during the winter I pull out a classic set of flannel sheets.  If you haven’t tried flannel sheets yet, the month of January is a great time to buy them.  All the major stores run their White Sales during January, and you can get a great set on sale.  I love the sheets offered by Eddie Bauer.

My “blankie” takes center stage.

Several years ago, my sweet husband bought me this exact throw (below) for Christmas.  This plush faux fur throw brings me lots of comfort and warmth, as well as adding a lot of style to my decor!  Layering your sofa or side chairs with a decorative throw is a stylish way to get through the winter.

Candles become my light source.

If you were to walk into my house right now, you’d see candles on just about every surface area that exist.  I love decorating with candles not only because they add ambience during the dreary winter season, but candlelight has been proven to reduce tension and relax the mind.   My favorite candles are those housed in beautiful mercury glass containers.  Check out one of my favorites from Anthorpologie here.

My bathroom becomes a sanctuary.

Taking a bath anytime of the year is a joy, but nothing beats a warm soak during the dead of winter.  To really make my bath feel luxurious, I take the time to add a few special touches to my tub surround:
*  Flowers
*  Candles
* Luxurious Bubble Bath (Lollia’s Wish is my fave!)
My  “reality” bath

My “dream” bath

If you’re feeling the winter blahs like me, try adding a few of your favorite things to make your home feel warm and cozy this season!
