DIY–Christmas Countdown Gift Holder

 Christmas Countdown Gift Holder

If you’re anything like me, finding that special holiday gift gets harder and harder each year.  Every year, I try to come up with something unique and different to put a spin on gift giving.  I’ve created my version of Oprah’s Favorite Things, I’ve gone down the clothes route, and I’ve relied on magazine subscriptions way to often.

To change things up a bit this year, I decided to make a DIY version of an Advent Calendar, or as I call it, a Christmas Countdown Gift Holder.

If you’re not familiar with the meaning behind Advent Calendars, simply put, it is a special calendar that is used to count or celebrate the coming of Christmas.  The 24 days leading up to Christmas are celebrated and often a small gift is opened each day as a sign of love and sharing among family.  So, to create my version of an Advent Calendar, I turned a 24 Pocket, Plastic Over-the-Door Shoe Holder into a Christmas Countdown Gift Holder.

Here’s the 411 on how my gift holder came to life….

To make my Christmas Countdown Gift Holder, I gathered the following supplies:

And then I went to work embellishing all 24 pockets.  I decorated each of the pockets differently, and numbered each pocket to correspond to the 24 days leading up to Christmas.  Pocket #1 holds a gift to be opened on Dec. 1st; the gift in pocket 2 will be opened on Dec. 2nd and so on thru Dec. 24th.

Here’s an up close look at a few of  the pockets.

I hope you enjoyed my version of an Advent Calendar, and that every day during this holiday season brings you joy and happiness!

A Little Holiday Inspiration

Sorry I’ve been MIA for the last week or so.  Owning a home decor and gift store this time of year can be a bit overwhelming, and at times utterly exhausting.

The seven Christmas Trees in the store are under constant re-design as the ornaments and festive pics get taken off of them in waves.  The beautifully decorated  garland that was so lovingly hung in early October is now looking like a wind-blown tree, and there’s glitter in every nook and cranny of the store (and on my body as well).  But, given all the work that goes into the store this time of year, there really is nothing more magical and fun than helping people create holiday magic for their homes.

While I gather my energy for another week of holiday home decorating, I though I’d share a few holiday images that have inspired me this time of year.  Enjoy!

Mercury Glass is one of my current holiday decorating obsessions, and even lead me to decorate my home in all silver and mercury glass.  I’ll share a few photos once all the decorating is complete, but until then, if you’d like to make your own Mercury Glass Candleholders, Martha Stewart has easy how-to instructions here.

CREATIVE COZINESS WITH SWEET PAUL MAGAZINE

It’s down right cold here in Atlanta today, and these images from Sweet Paul magazine really struck a chord with me. I just adore how Paul turned an old sweater into stylish decorative statements for the winter season.

The sweater covered lamp shades add a real sense of warmth and coziness above this table.  I can feel  my toes thawing out just looking at this picture.

I am so thrilled with the creativity of these projects, I am planning to stop by my local thrift store this weekend,  pick up a few nostalgic sweaters and make my own wintery candle hurricanes.  I’ll be sure to share pictures at a later date.

For more inspiring craft ideas, wonderful recipes and loads of design inspiration, check out the holiday issue of Sweet Paul magazine, here.  It is fab!

HALLOWEEN DIY

With Halloween just around the corner, I thought I’d share with you the BOOtiful Halloween Basket I made for my front door last week.

As a member of the blog team for May Arts Ribbon, I am constantly challenging myself to come up with stylish, unusual and easy DIY projects using beautiful May Arts ribbon, along with other craft elements. This is one of those projects that I envisioned clearly in my head, but wasn’t sure how it was actually going to turn out.  I am thrilled with the results and hope you like it to. If you’re inspired to get a little crafty for Halloween and make your own front door basket, click here for the full DIY instructions.

Have a great Halloween!

DIY PROJECT: FALL CANDLEHOLDERS

Since the temperature has dropped a few degrees, I’ve been motivated to begin decorating for fall.  When I pulled out my fall tabletop decor, I decided to add a little something new to the mix this year, and created these beautiful Ribbon Wrapped Candleholders.

Since I love burning candles, and love getting creative with ribbon, I thought these candleholders would really bring my dining room centerpiece to life.

You can find the full DIY steps on my blog post for May Arts Ribbon, here!

Here are a couple of shots of my Ribbon Wrapped Candleholders all lit up, as part of my fall dining table centerpiece.

If you’re feeling creative and want to design something with ribbon, be sure to check out the May Arts blog, where you’ll find loads of great DIY projects.  And, for even more fun, check out their Facebook page and enter one of their giveaways or contest.

PUTTING MY CRAFTING SKILLS TO THE TEST

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a contest that May Arts Ribbon was hosting and decided to put my design and crafting skills to the test.

The contest called Calling All Bloggers, is giving the winner(s) a chance to become the next May Arts blogger.  The contest seemed simple…create a project, any project, using the May Arts ribbon of your choice and submit it.  Since I love ribbon, love crafting and love designing I decided to create a Lattice Weave Framed Mirror.

You can check out the details of my project on the May Arts Blog here, and post a comment and let me know what you thing.

Here is my mirror on display.

Have a great weekend!
