Tassel Obsessed–One of my favorite details

Is there a certain design detail that you’re kind of obsessed with?  It might be floral patterns or maybe it’s mercury glass finishes.  For me that one design detail that I just can’t seem to get enough of is Tassels.  I’ve been crazy about tassels for years and when I opened my home decor store back in 2003, I even named it to reflect my love for tassel–The Scarlet Tassel.  I closed my store in 2011 but tassels continue to be one of may favorite decor and fashion accessories.

A recent round of online shopping turned up lots of great tassel adorned decor and fashion.  I knew you would never forgive me if I didn’t share it all with you so here, my friends are a load of tassel goodies.

Tassel Decor and Fashion Accessories Tassel Decor and Fashion Accessories

TASSEL MUST-HAVES:

I’m actively starting to shop for spring and summer shoes and these suede tassel loafers are on the list.  I love the bold color and stylish black tassel charms.  You’ll want to grab a pair of the fast because I know they will sell out.  p.s they are currently on sale for $79.88 and also come in a brown toffee color.

Pillows are one of the easiest and budget friendly ways to update your decor from one season to the next.  This Kate Spade Tassel Pillow would look great on a sofa or as an accent on a bed.  There are 2 yummy solid colors to choose from as well as a boho inspired black and cream stripe.  $129

If you look around your house I’m sure you’ll spot  multiple places where this cute white stool with tassels could go.  It’s the perfect footstool next to a chair or as an accent next to the bed. $139.99

I’m a bit of a throw collector because I’m always cold.  This chic marled grey knit throw will work with any decor style and is perfect for spring and summer nights watching movies on the sofa.  And I’m pretty smitten with the $69 price tag too!

Is there such things as having too many tassel earrings.  The fashion trend is still going strong so I say why not add these tassel drop earrings to your fashion lineup.  They are also available in a blue colorway and will only set you back $38.

Several years ago I wrote a post about shopping at Pottery Barn Kids for fun decor pieces.  This adorable Boho Tassel Storage Tote is just one example of an item that bridges the gap between kids and adults.  It screams magazine basket or blankets storage to me.  There are two sizes available–Small: $39 and Large: $59.

I love dressing up a simple summer dress or t-shirt with bold jewelry like this Cardo Tassel Necklace ($52).  The combination of tassels, pom poms and black and white is definitely a winning combo.

Have you noticed that patterned bath rugs have been trending up for the last few years?  Rugs with an all-over pattern are a great way to add visual interest to a utilitarian space like a bath or laundry room.  This striped bath rug with tassels would be a fun option to give your decor a pop of color.  And it’s under $40…$39.99 to be exact.

This amazing Justina Blakeney Fela Tassel Chandelier  takes tassel decor to a whole new level.  What a statement piece for a living space, bedroom or office.  I love the natural color ($193.50) but also found it in navy here and in pink here.

And finally friends…what do you get when you pair a classic decor piece like a decorative box with a tassel, this set of 3 decorative boxes with tassels.   You could use these boxes stacked as shown or break them apart to decorate a coffee table, bookshelf or night stand.  The set is only $73.99 and is available in 8 gorgeous colors.

Anyone else have a tassel obsession?

Happy shopping.

As a designer my job is to research and source stylish, high-quality furniture and decor to fit my clients needs and lifestyle.  Often times my search leads me to my favorite stores locally.  And other times my search for beautiful furnishings and decor might lead me across the pond.

The Sofa & Chair Company is the UK’s leading manufacturer of luxury sofas and hand-crafted furniture.  Their extensive furniture collections boast luxurious fabrics (silk, leather, velvet and cashmere), sleek finishes (chrome, brass, marble), and refined details (feather and down cushions, tufting, welt trims)–all elements that speak to style and quality. In addition to carrying in-stock items which are available for immediate shipping, all of the items in their designer furniture collection are available for customization.   Working with their design team, you can create a one-of-a-kind piece to fit your exact size, fabric and finish specifications. And with delivery services available worldwide, their items are accessible to everyone.

To inspire your decorating dreams, I’ve created several mood boards using furniture, lighting and decor from The Sofa & Chair Company.  And I’m sharing a few design and styling tips as well.

SOPHISTICATED LIVING ROOM

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

The foundation to any beautifully designed living space is a cohesive color story the has visual interest and depth.  The Sofa & Chair Company makes it easy to create a sophisticated space with their wide range of furniture styles and fabric options.  Here I paired a lush velvet sofa in navy with lighter toned occasional chairs.  The gold accent color represented in the artwork, lamp and vase create a cohesive story within the room.   And the subtle pattern in the rug ties the color story and room design together while adding another layer of design elegance. design tip: It is best to use an accent color in at least three places around the room.  You want to color to look intentional, not accidental.

ELEGANT DINING ROOM

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

A space like a dining room can be both functional and elegant by combining classic furniture designs with artistic accessories.  For this mood board I used a combination of wood finishes to create sense of masculinity and depth.  The addition of a softy tiered chandelier, brushed brass accessories and a pastel hued dining chair soften the room while adding elegance.  When entertaining, classic tabletop decor in silver and black will stand out without commanding attention. design tip:  a light-colored chandelier and rug will visually make a small dining space appear bigger. And mixing metal finishes (gold with silver) will make a dining room feel elegant in an instant.

CHIC ENTRYWAY

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

A beautiful and chic entryway sets the tone for your home and introduces your home’s personality.  To welcome guests with style, I designed this space around an sculptural console table.  A pair simple lamps allows the shaped mirror and dramatic artwork to pop.  And a pair of plush fabric ottomans with a gold-tone metal base anchor this welcoming vignette.  design tip:  a small entryway can appear bigger by visual extending the width of a console table with artwork and furniture flanking each side.

In a small house or apartment, an entryway is a great place to add additional storage.  Replace the console table, mirror and lamps with this chic Torrington Cabinet for an entry way that pulls double duty with style and storage.

STATELY MASTER BEDROOM

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

Combining dark and light tones is a great way to create a bedroom that feel stately and elegant. A light-colored rug keep the space from feel dark and heavy. And the black night stands help to visually ground the room while adding a bit of drama.  design tip: framed photos like this shot of the Parliamentary Building in Budapest, Hungary make for a unique art statement in any room.

POLISHED HOME OFFICE

Style and Design--Profiling The Sofa & Chair Company by ConfettiStyle

Home offices often get neglected when it comes to decor. I designed this office to include a mix of traditional and modern elements creating a space with interest and character.  The Sofa & Chair Company has a great selection of abstract artwork and rugs that mix easily with any of their desk styles.  And if you’re looking for to add a unique design statement to your office, switch out the desk chair for an upholstered bench.  design tip:  black is a great furniture color to use in an office space because it creates an instant focal point in a room that typically has lots of visual chaos going on.

One advantage of decorating with classic colors is that you can easily change out elements of your decor to give the space a new look.  Replacing the black and white rug with this pink Vivian Fringed Rug would give this office a whole new vibe.

Favorite Items from The Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market

Happy Monday!  If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, let’s just say in the land of busy.  In addition to spending 9 days at the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market, I’ve also been knee-deep in working on a design project and gearing up for another year as board president of a local non-profit.  Even though it’s only the 3rd week of January, I feel like Christmas was ages ago and the days are flying by at lightening speed.

To mark the return to a normal posting schedule, I wanted to share a few of the items I spotted at AmericasMart.  If you’re unfamiliar with the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market,  you can read all about it here.

♦♦♦

First up is one of my favorite lighting companies, Currey & Company. The company is best known for their stylish lighting but they also sell beautiful accent furniture and accessories.

The inlaid wood pattern on the Benedict Credenza grabbed my attention first and then I noticed the sleek brass hardware.  I envision this piece being placed under a wall-mount TV or as a buffet/bar cabinet in a dining room.

There were lots of beautiful lighting fixtures introduced at market but the two below really stood out.  The Frogmore Lantern is designed with an intricate leaf design and gold-leaf finish. #goldisheretostay  Can’t you just see this beauty hanging over a garden tub or kitchen island?

Retro designs are not my personal style but I loved everything about the Gino Chandelier.  The tapered cone design and matte black finish give it just the right amount of sexiness.  This fixture would look stunning hanging over a glass or marble top dining table.

Currey and Company from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

I’m sure many of you have come across products from Palecek before but probably don’t know much about the company.  The company is over 40 years old and has a foundation in manufacturing products using natural fibers, renewable materials and environmentally friendly hardwoods.  Their style is distinctive with products designed around simple details and organic shapes.

Anything in brass and leather is sure to grab my attention and this Alexander Chair did just that.  I loved the fresh, modern take on a classic directors chair and would use a pair of these chairs in a reading room or study.

Ottomans are one of my go-to accent furniture pieces and it was refreshing to come across this one covered in something other than fabric.  The Fritz Rope Ottoman is wrapped in natural and black seagrass rope creating the look of an upholstered piece.  A pair of these would be great in a sunroom or outdoor covered patio.

Palecek from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

Gabby Home is a product line that is known for stylish pieces and vintage designs. Their style offering ranges from contemporary and modern to traditional and classic.

I loved the lines of their Julian Coffee Table with gold trim detail.  And because I believe every room needs a touch of black, this coffee table would be ideal to add dram and depth to a living room.

I spotted lots of acrylic pieces at market so expect that trend to be around for a while.  The antique gold frame in their Johnson Dining Chair updated the classic acrylic chair design and elevated the style.

Gabby Home from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

When I had my store, Uttermost was one of my top vendors.  Uttermost has one of the best selections of oversized mirrors on the market and are also known for their accent furniture and lighting.  This market I came across several new accessory and accent lighting pieces in their line that I loved.

The acrylic and brass Balkan Tray was stunning and I’ve already got it tagged for a design client to use on a hallway console table.

I’ve been on the hunt a brass or gold tone pendant light and loved the rod design and gold-leaf finish on their Glam Mini Pendant.  They are the perfect design and size to hang over a kitchen peninsula.

And how about this chic gold and glass Natasia Accent Table?  Wouldn’t this look great in between two comfy arm chairs?  I could also see it being used nestled into a corner in a powder room to hold accessories and functional items.

Uttermost from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

If you want to make a statement with your bookshelf decor, then check out E. Lawrence.  In addition to their wholesale business they also have an e-commerce site that anyone can purchase from.  Unlike many manufacturers, E. Lawrence sells just one thing…beautiful decorative books.  Their product offering ranges from traditional leather-bound books to books with stylish covers.    Their newest collections included a quotation series (which I love) and lots of metallic finishes.

E. Lawrence Books from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

And finally there’s Go Home.  This is another company I purchased from when I had my store.  I love their eclectic mix of products which include furniture, decorative accessories, lighting and bar accessories.

The Collete Coffee Table is a great piece for a smaller space and I love the gold frame and design detail that supports the top and bottom shelves.

Among their decorative accessories, Go Home carries lots of great basket styles.  I loved this collection of Shumer Baskets which have a classic blue and white design and fun leather carry handles.

One of the industrial designs I fell in love with was the Rockwell Coffee Table which has a gorgeous finish and brass label pulls.

GO Home from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

I hope you enjoyed this mini tour around the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market. This is just a glimpse at the thousands upon thousands of new products introduced during the show.  You can expect to see these pieces and all of the new design trends hitting stores soon and online shops soon.  I’ll be back next week to share more insights on the hot trends for 2017.

Along with checking the new furniture and decor introductions at market, I also shop for new design books. #bookjunkie

Tomorrow I’ll share some of the new book titles that you’ll definitely want to add to your Amazon shopping cart.

Anatomy of a Well-Styled Room

Anatomy of a Well-Styled Room.001

The key elements are in place and now it’s time to add the finishing touches to your decor.  Where do you start with styling a room and what elements are needed to pull everything together?

Today I’m answering that question and outlining the key components to a well-styled room.

A Well-Style Room from Style at Home2

via Style at Home

The first step in to putting the finishing touches on the decor of a room is to have a plan.  Developing a vision for the space even before furniture has been purchased will go a long way to creating the space your desire.  Create an inspiration board with fabric and color swatches, photos of accessories you like and images that reflect the overall feel you want the space to have.

Next, clear the room of all your current accessories so that you are starting with a clean palette.  Take time to go through the things you own and decide which pieces you really want back in the room.  Use only the items that work with your design vision and that you love, otherwise the room won’t bring your ultimate joy.

Once all the key elements like furniture and window treatments are in place, create a plan for accessorizing.  Pull the existing items you’ve kept back into the room and begin placing them where you want.  Once that is done, take stock of the room and create a list of the new items you need to buy.  New pillows, a throw and even something a simple as a decorative tray can make a space come alive.

A Well-Styled Room from Style at Home4

via Style at Home

As you place accessories around the room keep these tips in mind:

  • Place accessories so that they enhance the focal point within the room, not compete with it.  Hang a dynamic mirror over the mantel instead of placing it on another wall within the room.
  •  Create groupings with your tabletop decor to add impact and interest.  And remember that smaller accessory items look best with grouped together versus scattered around a room.
  • Group items of different sizes to create visual movement.  Use books to elevate objects and create balance.
  • Spread collections around the room unless you have a dedicated display piece for them.
  • Accessorize so the eye has different levels to look at.  This includes accessories on the floor, walls and in even the lighting at the ceiling.
  • Incorporate a living element like a plant or flowers to add softness and a sense of energy.
  • A well-styled room is about balance. Don’t fill every square inch of space–leave spaces where the eye can rest.
  • Use color as a unifying element within the room.
  • Every accessory mix should incorporate a variety of finishes, textures, materials, styles and a touch of black to help visually anchor the room.
  • Add a corky element to delight, surprise and bring a sense of playfulness to the room.

Don’t rush the styling of your home.  The accessories and finishing touches are often the elements that take the most time but have the greatest impact of how the room looks and feels.

Shopping AT HOME–the good, the bad and the messy!

At Home.001.jpeg.001

Over the weekend I made a shopping trip to a new to me store, At Home.  If you’re not familiar with At Home, it’s the old Garden Ridge brand that has been completely revamped and rebranded.  Garden Ridge carried a small offering of home decor items  but the main offering was mostly a craft, seasonal and faux floral items.  When the store rebranded to At Home, the product mix changed to all home decor including outdoor furniture and garden decor.

Before I get into what I liked about At Home, let me tell you about some of the drawbacks…

♦  If you’re looking for investment pieces, you won’t find them At Home.  What you’ll find are decorative pieces that are will last years but not a lifetime.  Take for instant rugs.  The store carries hundreds of styles and sizes but the quality isn’t the best on the market, meaning mostly synthetic fibers.  And they have a massive selection counter and bar stools but if they’d be used on a daily basis, I don’t think most of the styles have a lifespan beyond 5 to 6 years.

They don’t offer the best prices in town.  Many of the items in the store you can also find in HomeGoods/TJMaxx, Target, Wal-Mart and other big box stores and in many cases the big box stores have better prices.

Selections are limited in some categories of product. The dinnerware and tabletop category was one of the weakest areas of the store.  There wasn’t a lot of variety and when you did come across a style you liked, they didn’t have quantity on hand that would allow for multiple place setting.

The store is a bit messy.  I’m going to give them the benefit of doubt and blame it on post-Christmas business or a busy shopping weekend but some areas of the store were a total disaster.  Pillows were all over the floor in the pillow aisle and in the bath department things were a hot mess.

thumb_IMG_1645_1024

thumb_IMG_1644_1024

Here’s the things I liked about ‘At Home’…

♦  They carry a huge selection of items and At Home is a great source of basic pieces.  If you’re needing decor like baskets and containers, decorative accessories or mirrors you should definitely check out At Home.  The mirror department was impressive with a wide range of styles and sizes (lots of oversized mirrors).  I spotted several (0k, many) mirrors I wanted for myself or for clients.  And I thought the prices were good, especially for the larger mirrors.

♦  You’ll see the latest product trends and colors.  At Home is definitely up to date on the latest product and style trends so if something is HOT, you’re likely to see it (or a version of the trend) in the store.

♦  They have a great lampshade selection.  One of the reasons I made the trip to At Home was to look for a black lampshade.  I haven’t been to Scott Antique market in months to hit up my usual source and when HomeGoods has them, they sell out pretty quick so I’ve been on the hunt for one.  At Home has hundreds of lampshades in every sizes, color and shape you can imagine.  Their prices are pretty good with a basic black drum shade prices between $14.99 and $29.99.

Lots of fun, whimsical and themed seasonal decor.  If you like to decorate for each season you’re sure to find some cute stuff like these adorable bunnies with gold ears.  These bunnies were about 12″ to 14″ tall and I think these were either $12.99 or $14.99.  Also, if you have a need for faux flowers or greenery they have a selection that rival Hobby Lobby, Michael’s or JoAnn.

♦  Lots and lots and lots and lots of wall decor and artwork.  When it comes to artwork, think HomeGoods on steroid.  There must have been 15 or more aisles of wall decor and artwork so if you need inexpensive wall decor this is your place.

I think that’s enough about what I liked about At Home so let’s take a look at a few items that caught my eye when I was shopping.

The cutest darn ceramic bunnies.  I think there were $12.99 or $14.99.

thumb_IMG_1595_1024

Great wood crates for flowers, a kitchen caddy or for organizing magazines and such.

thumb_IMG_1593_1024

thumb_IMG_1594_1024

Loved these ceramic horse head bookends.  They had lots of styles to choose from but many are some separately which resulted in lots of solo pieces on the shelf.

thumb_IMG_1646_1024

thumb_IMG_1647_1024

Here’s just one row of their mirror offering–I think there were about 9 or 10 rows in total.

thumb_IMG_1639_1024

Here’s a classic starburst mirror that could be used in a gallery wall arrangement or layered on top of a larger mirror.  Notice the price.

thumb_IMG_1634_1024

I feel in love with this mirror below, both the style and the $129.99 price.

thumb_IMG_1628_1024

This Pagoda style mirror below was another fave and priced at $199.99 which was good given its size.

There are lots of oversized (and regular sized) clocks.

thumb_IMG_1632_1024

The store carries baskets in all shapes and sizes but I think you can find better prices at HomeGoods/TJMaxx.

thumb_IMG_1627_1024

I didn’t love this open end basket but if was the only one and it didn’t have a price on it.

p.s.  At Home is the size of warehouse so going to ask for a price is like walking the length of a football field (not really, but almost)

thumb_IMG_1625_1024

Here’s an on trend gold fretwork table with a glass top.  $49.99 if I remember correctly.

thumb_IMG_1624_1024

Cute and colorful accent tables.

thumb_IMG_1611_1024

Ok, let’s talk chairs and bar stools.  At Home has a large selection of accent/side chairs and overall the styling and fabrics are nice.  The only thing I didn’t  like was the construction details of the legs.  A lot of the legs were wobbly and just didn’t seem solid.  The hubs and I did tighten a few legs and it made the chairs better but I question how long these chairs would really last.  As a side chair that doesn’t get used often, I do think there were some good options.

thumb_IMG_1609_1024

I loved the design of this wood and chrome chair.

thumb_IMG_1607_1024

And these bar stools were very Ballard Design without the price (or the quality).

thumb_IMG_1608_1024

Great oversized ottomans–a nice size for a coffee table or at the end of a bed.

thumb_IMG_1606_1024

Bench with acrylic legs. I think this was priced at $129.99.

thumb_IMG_1604_1024

The lucite ghost chair priced at $99.00.

and also available in black.

thumb_IMG_1612_1024

thumb_IMG_1613_1024

You’ll also find upholstered headboards.

thumb_IMG_1605_1024

I did run across this tartan plaid dinnerware and almost bought it.  There were dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and cups.

thumb_IMG_1614_1024

This table runner was pretty and would make a great backdrop of a summer tablescape.

thumb_IMG_1617_1024

At Home has a ton of different typography letters to choose from but all of the really common letters like S, L , M were sold out.  This rope design was pretty cute.

thumb_IMG_1618_1024

Probably my favorite items in all of the store were their garden stools.  Prices similar to what you can find at HomeGoods but with more variety to choose from.

I loved this elephant stool.

And really, really loved these blue and white stools.  They were all $49.99.

What else I’d buy At Home?

♦  Outdoor umbrella–great prices and great selection

♦  Garden planters–definitely something for everyone

♦  Picture Frames–From large to small and I spotted some lots of uncommon sizes which I’m often on the hunt for

♦  Glassware–great selection of glassware and at great prices.

So there you have it, a mini tour and scoop on At Home.  Despite some of my drawbacks, I will definitely be shopping at the store again and look forward to checking them out around Christmas.

If you’ve shopped at At Home, what do you like most about what the store has to offer?  I’d love to know.

Not 10, but ELEVEN Home Decor Products I’m Loving In The New Year

AmericasMart Atlanta

In about a week I’ll be heading to AmericasMart for the Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishings show where I’ll be checking out the new products that manufacturers are introducing to the market. I always love the January because it’s refreshing to see the talked about trends come to life and because it’s a nice departure from all the glitz and sparkle of Christmas.

As the market approaches, I’ve also started getting new catalogs in the mail from all the major online and retail furniture and home decor stores.  I spent a little time the other night flipping through them and wanted to share 11 home decor products I’m loving right now.
