Favorite Of The Week–An eclectic mix!

It’s Saturday and I’m up early and headed off to the gym to swim.  I may not have mentioned it before but I swam competitively when I was younger. Over the years, as life got busy I drifted away from swimming but I’ve been feeling the urge to get back in the pool. And I have to tell you that it feels so good–the water is my happy place.

While I’m off counting laps, I hope you enjoy a few of my favorite posts from the week.

Enjoy your weekend!

Design Guide: Shopping For The Perfect Sofa

We started looking for a new sofa last year and I couldn’t find I liked.   We decided to put our sofa shopping on hold so it gives me the perfect opportunity to share sofa styling tips to help you (and me) find the ideal sofa.

The first and most critical step in picking a sofa is to determine the style of sofa that fits your needs and function as well as your design aesthetic.

Favorites Of The Week (all from the One Room Challenge)

FAVORITES OF THE WEEK

Hi friends.  Sorry it’s been a bit quite here on the blog this week.  I made several attempts to sit down and finish this weeks blog posts but things just kept getting in the way.  I’m going to be back on schedule next week with an eclectic (don’t you just love that word) mix of posts.  I’ll be sharing some holiday gift wrap inspiration and wrapping tips, my first holiday gift guide and a DIY project that has been on my to-do list to ages!

I’m closing out the week my usual ‘favorites’ post but this time it’s all about the One Room Challenge which is now in its 10th season.  Have your had a chance to check out all the spaces that were transformed over the last 6 weeks?  I haven’t made it through all the participating bloggers posts but what I’ve seen so far is WOW!  Holy Moly, there are some truly amazing design ideas, before and after transformations and a whole lot of inspiration.  Check out a few of my favorite spaces (so far)…

Next is Kris from Driven By Decor.  Kris was also working with a room that had lots of bookcases but instead of going dark and dramatic, she created soft and soothing space.

The next space I absolutely love was designed and transformed by Kristin from The Hunted Interior.  She was also working with a long narrow space and added a wall of bookcases to create drama at the far end of the room.

It’s The Little Things–Decorative Matches

There’s a small bowl sitting next to a candle on my coffee table filled with decorative matchboxes.  I’ve purchased a few of them, made a few myself and have lucked upon some really cools one at stores and restaurants.  Decorative matchboxes are one of those design details that don’t make a big statement but add a fun element to your decor.  Decorative matches are a fun and functional way to accessorize a tabletop vignette.

Here’s some design inspiration and a few of my favorite decorative matches you can shop.

Curb Appeal: Corbels As A Design Detail

house with corbels

via

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I got a lot checked off my to-do list and also managed to fit in some downtime with a Sunday drive.

One of my favorite things to do on a sunny weekend is drive through neighborhoods and check out the exterior decor of homes.  I enjoy looking at the details that give homes their character like shutters, doors and corbels.  Traditionally corbels are used as a support feature to hold up a structure but more and more you are seeing them as both functional and decorative elements.

♦♦♦

Some styles of home like Spanish or Cape Code are just meant for corbels and large, oversized designs like these really make an impact along an exterior bank of doors and windows.

Brackets3

via

They can be simple or elaborate in design and a trend you’re seeing a lot of now is the use of reclaimed or weathered wood to give the home an old-world look.

Deen/Groover Residence

I love corbels as an accent framing the door to a home.  They are a great alternative to columns or pillars and add so much style to a porch overhang.

On a true southern style home like this, they add to the charm of the exterior.

If adding corbels to your exterior decor is not an option, look at adding them inside as a beautiful architectural detail. They are a great way to frame and visually anchor a room, window or doorway.

Designer Closets–The Details You Can Use In Your Own Closet

DESIGN DETAILS FOR YOUR DREAM CLOSET

Designer Closet
via

One of my favorite things to do on Pinterest is look at designer closets. In fact, I have an entire Dream Closet board filled with images I love. Not only are designer closets pretty to look at but I love analyzing the storage and organizational details that make it stylish and functional.

During my latest round of pinning images, I took note of some of the style details that make a designer closet, a designer closet.  I recognized that many of the elements are things that will work in any closet, regardless of its size.  So while I continue to dream about my designer closet, here are 10 design details you can use in your own closet that will turn a humble closet into a hollywood dream.

♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

  • Creating storage behind closed doors is definitely and high-style trick that you can add to your own closet.  Glass fronts will allow you to see the contents inside and preserve leather and hardware finishes on handbags and accessories.

  • Even the smallest of vanity areas is a great design touch for a closet.  Create your space above a set or drawers or add a small table or wall shelf between shelving or in a corner. And once you start decorating your vanity area, make sure to incorporate a few pretty but functional pieces.

♦♦♦

  • Even a small stool will add stylish seating to your designer closet.  If you don’t have open wall space where a stool can sit, tuck it into the shelving under  hanging garment.

  • I have to admit I’m a little ‘mommy dearest’ when it comes to matching hangers in the closet.  Regardless of the type of hangers you use, using one style throughout the closet will instantly UpStyle the look and feel of your closet space.

And if new hangers are not in the budget right now, shop thrift stores and spray paint the hangers to create a uniform look.

♦♦♦

  • A little paint or wallpaper can go a long way in adding designer style to your closet.  Even if you can’t  paint or wallpaper the entire space, consider dressing up one accent wall or even the ceiling.

  • One thing you’ll notice about most designer closets is that they use storage baskets and bins to keep things organized.  Baskets can hold t-shirts sorted by color, accessories or even staples like jeans and sweaters.  Use one or two basket styles to create a uniform look with your closet decor.

  • Display hooks are definitely a designer touch but for just a few dollars and no physical labor you can add them to your closet.  These shelf hooks from Container Store are great if you have a wire rack system in your closet and these hooks from Ikea work great on solid surface shelving.

“Personal style is about taking classic pieces and reinterpreting them to make them your own.” – Frida Giannin

  • It’s easy to add unique details to your closet space and give it a designer feel.  I love the architectural look of these wood shelves for holding jewelry and other accessories.  You can install your own with these wall cubes from Home Depot.

  • Chic and efficienet lighting is a must for any closet space.  A chandelier is always elegant and picture lights are ideal when you need direct lighting in specific areas.  Ikea has a nice selection of unique wall mounted spotlights.

via / via
  • I don’t know how many times I see someone that’s not dressed to impress and question whether or not they have a dressing mirror.  Every designer closet needs them.  You can hang an inexpensive full length mirror on a door or wall, or get creative and UpStyle the look with molding and trims.

Every time I look at designer closets I’m inspired to make a few simple changes to give our petite space the designer touch.  And I truly believe that a pretty closet space will put added pep in your step as you get ready in the morning.

So, which of these designer closet details do you love the most?
