My Coffee Table Has The Blues (but it’s happy)!

I am constantly changing out the accessories on my coffee table but the one design element that remains a constant is a decorative tray. I use trays because they add visual layers to the arrangement and they’re great for holding small decorative items and books.

You might remember this brown wood tray that often makes an appearance on my coffee table. It’s sturdy, oversized and I like the texture and pattern of the woven liner but the tray was begging for a facelift. As as thing go, changing the look of the tray led to a mini makeover with the coffee table decor.

Books and flowers are usually the items that add color to the table arrangement but I wanted a bolder color statement so I gave the tray its new look with a coat of emerald green paint (Behr Crown Jewel #P420-7) and new gold handles.

Emerald green has always been a color I love and I plan to use more of it in my fall decor.

Once the tray got its facelift, I went about styling the table with some of my favorite pieces. I recently started collecting blue and white chinoiserie and love the combination of green, brass and blue & white. The combo is eclectic and happy but still has a traditional feel which is right up my alley.

Blue and white ceramics are such a hot design trend right now and I’ve been fortunate to score some great pieces at incredible prices from thrift stores, flea markets and a new shopping source I recently discovered (I’ll share more about it next week).

My coffee table is fairly large and the color pops create the perfect contrast against the darker wood table.

I love how the arrangement turned out and I think the colors are perfect for the last few weeks of summer.

When I’m ready to start decorating for fall, (I’m not there just yet) the DIY pumpkins I’m making will work great alongside the new tray and blue and white pottery.

Wood, Paper, Paint–A DIY Cocktail Tray

Have you noticed that I have a tray obsession? Well I do but I can’t help myself. Trays are such a fun accent for a table top, vanity, desk or bar cart and are the perfect accessory to help keep smaller items organized.

Recently I stumbled upon the image of this $65 tray in a magazine and knew immediately that I wanted to created my own version…for a lot less!

I picked up this unfinished wood tray at Walmart for $8.00 and grabbed a few paint chips from Home Depot.

Once home I pulled out my Fiskars Hexagon Punch and punched a variety of paint chip colors.

Next I spray painted the tray using Rustoleum Metallic Spray Paint in Aged Copper making sure to cover the entire tray.

I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the inside bottom of the tray and arranged my hexagons, randomly placing the colors.

Once all the pieces were in place I applied Mod Podge over the hexagons and all the sides and edge of the tray.

I love how my tray turned out. I placed it in several places in my home and finally decided to keep it on my bar cart as a fun summer accent.

DIY Acrylic Tray

Earlier this week I shared my love of Lucite Trays and how versatile I think they are as a decorative element. Seeing so many beautiful acrylic trays on Pinterest made me want to craft one (or two) of my own. So I did just that!

Most of the handmade acrylic trays I’ve seen and even the ones that you can buy on Etsy are all about the interior design. I wanted my trays to have a little more pizzazz so as well as decorating the inside of the trays, I decided to add decorative handles and a ribbon trim to each.

Both of the trays I made were super easy and very inexpensive. I started with two plastic box frames which were $3.99 for the 8 x 10 size and $4.99 for the 11 x 14 size, decorative knobs which were $3.99 each, scrapbook paper which I had in my stash and ribbon which was from my ribbon “collection” {otherwise known as my ribbon hoard}.

All of the supplies I purchased came from Hobby Lobby and I used my 40% off coupon on some of the elements and the others were part of a 50% off in store sale so the savings were even greater. The total cost for the smaller tray, including ribbon and paper, was $ 8.25 and the larger tray cost $9.75!

How To:

Take the cardboard and paper insert out of the box frame
Cut your scrapbook paper to fit the inside of the frame. If you are using 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper, you’ll need to cut two pieces and fit them together for the larger tray. Once the paper is cut, use double-sided tape to hold it in place. ***If you are using your tray for serving, a quick coat of Mod Podge or a layer of clear contact paper will protect the paper surface.

Measure and cut a length of ribbon to fit around the outside of the tray. Hot glue the ribbon at the corners of the tray and where the edges overlap.
Remove the screws that come with the knobs. Hot glue the knobs on to the tray, on top of the ribbon.
Style and admire your tray!
