Favorites Of The Week {a random mix of great stuff}

Whew! What a week it has been.  I’ve been running in 50 different directions sourcing products, working on projects and trying to wrangle the paperwork on my desk.

I wish I could say this was going to be a low-key weekend but it’s not.  I’m spending all day tomorrow in meeting with the non-profit agency I work with then I’m doing some major house cleaning.  We do have a fun outing planned for Sunday morning but the rest of the day will be spent working and preparing for the busy week ahead.  Oh, I am planning to shut things down so I can watch the Oscars!

I hope you can find some downtime to enjoy a few of my favorites from the week.

The India Hicks Collection {Island Style}

I have long admired India Hicks model, style maven and lifestyle designer.

India first came on my radar with her first book entitled Island Life: Inspirational Interiors which she wrote with her father David Hicks, the famed English interior decorator and designer.

Since that time India has developed a lifestyle brand that has included home decor, bath & body products, accessories and jewelry.  After years of developing products in partnership with other companies, India’s newest business endeavor is a collection of products sold through networks of entrepreneurial women. In India’s words…

“the exclusive collections of well-crafted gifts, beauty and accessories are sold through networks of entrepreneurial women, creating a more meaningful shopping experience”.

Inspired by her British heritage and island life, each product is beautifully crafted with a classic design esthetic that will stand the test of time.

A Cute Clutch Find From An Unexpected Place

Around Christmas I shared the Junk Gypsy Bohemian Geo Cuff Sheet Set that I received from Pottery Barn Teen.  But what I didn’t tell you was this wasn’t the only thing I received from PB.  They also sent me this adorable suede clutch.

Junk Gypsy Wanderer Fringe Pouch from Pottery Barn Teen

The Wanderer Fringe Pouch is also part of the Junky Gypsy collection designed by sisters Amie and Jolie Sikes, affectionately known as the Junk Gypsies.  In true Junk Gypsy style, this pouch has a fun, whimsical and bohemian vibe.

There are so many things I love about this pouch, starting with the super soft 100% suede leather fabric.  It feels like butter to the touch and is a high quality grade of leather. I know a lot about leather products from my years of buying and sourcing for Eddie Bauer.

Junk Gypsy Wanderer Fringe Pouch from Pottery Barn Teen

The other thing I love about this bag is the fringe detail and tassel zipper pull.  How did PB know my love for tassels runs deep?

When it comes to handbags, I always look for special details that give a bag pizzazz and the fringe + tassel do that to this simple clutch.

Junk Gypsy Wanderer Fringe Pouch from Pottery Barn Teen

There are not pockets on the inside of the pouch but that’s ok because it forces me to keep the contents light.

Junk Gypsy Wanderer Fringe Pouch from Pottery Barn Teen

I’ve so enjoyed pairing this bag with jeans and sweaters this winter and it’s going to be the perfect accessory for a cowboy themed birthday party we’re going to in a few weeks.

Junk Gypsy Wanderer Fringe Pouch from Pottery Barn TeenIf you love backpacks, there’s also a Wandered Fringe Backpack  which is the perfect hands free bag for a weekend of shopping.  And both the pouch and backpack are currently on sale!

There are so many great items in the Junk Gypsy for Pottery Barn Teen collection.  You can check out all of the items here.

disclaimer:  Pottery Barn Teen sent me this product in exchange for a review.  Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Teen are two of my go-to sources for stylish and affordable decor and gift items. I am happy to partner with them in sharing some of the products I love. All text, images and opinions are my own.

The Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide

♦  I love everything that Lollia makes including this Lollia Poetic License Diffuser ($48).  Scent diffusers are a great way to add fragrance to a home without burning candles. I especially love to use diffusers in a bathroom or tuck one away in a guest bedroom.

♦  This Gilded Monogram DOF Glass ($18) is a good gift for someone (like me) that loves to entertain. One, two or four make a great hostess gift or family gift.  If you’re celebrating the holidays at a New Year’s Eve party, a set glasses would be ideal to ring in the new year.

♦  A pretty necklace can make an outfit. The Silver Links Statement Necklace ($29.99) is a gift that will be enjoyed long after the holidays are over.

♦ Emerald Green is one of my favorite colors and you can’t beat the price on this Green Pashmina Style Shawl ($5.99)!  It’s the perfect layering piece over a sweater or under a coat. One for them, one for me.√

♦  You’ll wow anyone with a gift of these Silver Mercury Glass Hurricane Candleholder ($11.89-$19.59).  They will look stunning grouped in the center of a table or next to the hearth.  And I’d also use them as vases by dropping a clear glass jar inside to hold flowers.  Check your local Cost Plus because these are selling out quickly online.

♦  Pretty {and functional) gloves are hard to come by but this pair of Echo Touch Zip Boucle’ Tech Gloves ($39) checks both boxes.  You can operate a cell phone with ease and stay warm while doing it.

♦  This L’Objet Malachite Tray ($120) is the most expensive gift in the gift guide but it is a beauty.  Envision this sitting on a side table, night stand or vanity holding pretty perfume bottles.

♦  If you’ve never read any of Steve Harvey’s books, I recommend you do. His books are filled with solid wisdom, advice and lots of laughs too.  I can’t wait to read his newest book, Jump: Take the Leap Of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance ($18.04).

♦  A girl can never have too many handbags.  The Crossbody Bag with Metallic Straps ($39.90) is a great bag for weekend shopping or traveling when you need hands free.

♦ I’m always stuffing my electronic cords in a zippered pouch but they never stay organized.  The idea of something to keep everything neat and tidy is so appealing.  I love this Leather Charger Roll Up ($49) because its compact and comes in fun colors.

♦  Personalized stationery just might be one of best gifts you can give someone. This 7 Tablet Notepad Set with Holder ($41) is a great price and personalization is available in array of colors.

Winter Scarves From Nordstrom (budget friendly finds)

Winter Scarves From Nordstrom

I woke up yesterday morning and it was down right frigid outside.  The warm weather trend is definitely over and the cool, crisp air of fall is here to stay.  One of my go-to fashion accessories when the weather turns cool is a scarf.  I am always cold and a scarf adds just the right layer of warmth around my neck and shoulders.

When I was cleaning out my closet in early spring, I tossed a few of my scarves that had seen better days. Now I’m in the market for a couple of new scarves that will work as transitional pieces from fall to winter.

Nordstrom always has a great selection of scarves and I always find what I’m looking for.  A recent search of their website served up some great options, most of which are priced between $25.00 and $50.00.  And here’s a great tip if you’re looking for fashion scarves on a budget–shop the Brass Plum department.  Brass Plum is a shop aimed primarily for juniors but their accessory items are perfect for any fashionista, regardless of your age.

Let’s go scarf shopping shall we…

Winter Scarves from Nordstrom

No. 1 — This Abstract Print Cashmere & Silk Scarf is the most expensive scarf ($99) in my group but I just love the blue and white marble swirl pattern. It’s the perfect scarf to wear with jeans and sweaters.
No. 2 — Navajo prints are a hot trend right now and the Atlas Scarf is a classic take on the design style.  This will look great with a chunky sweater, slim jean and ankle boots.
No. 3 — The Fantasy Brushstroke Scarf  is another abstract pattern that looks like a piece of artwork.  I adore the pink and red color combo and would style this with a denim dress and tights.
No. 4 — If you love graphic patterns, you’ll love this Geo Pattern Woven Square Scarf .  This is the perfect piece to pair with a wool coat or quilted vest.
Winter Scarves From Nordstrom
No.5 — I love the grey, ivory and yellow in this Stripe Plaid Scarf and the $29 price makes it even more attractive. I’m definitely going  picking this one up.
No.6  — I own this Reversible Scarf and love the two patterns because it like two scarves in one.  The scarf is oversized and a little thicker than the others so it works as a great outer layer when a coat is too much.
No. 7 — Have you noticed all the navy clothing in stores for fall and winter?  This navy and grey Colorblock Woven Scarf  has a classic design and the lightweight fabric makes it really versatile for layering.
No. 8 — I’m all about scarves with all-over patterns and love this Vintage Garden Scarf.  This is another one I’ll be adding to my wardrobe.

With an ever-growing scarf collection, I’m on the hunt for a new way to organize and store them while reducing wrinkles and keeping them visible.  Here are a few ideas from Pinterest that I’m inspired by.

DIY Monogram Straw Hat

Monogram Hat Cover.001

In a couple of months we’ll be setting sail on our 8th cruise to the Caribbean.  This time around out ports of call will be Aruba, Bonaire, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turks.  #soexcited

I’ve already started picking up a few new items for the trip, one of which was a new sun hat for me.  A plain straw hat would have worked fine but I had to give my hat a little extra something-something.

♦♦♦

DIY MONOGRAM STRAW HAT

Monogram Straw Hat

Here’s how the project started…

I bought this basic wide brim hat from Wal-Mart for under $5.00 ($3.35 to be exact).  You can see that it has a thin brown cord as a decorative touch but the brown wasn’t working for me.  Neither was the plain brim.

Straw Sun Hat

So I replaced the cord with a black and white striped ribbon and added my monogram to the back of the brim.  Instant style!

Mongram Straw Hat2

All it took to replace the cording was a few snips with the scissors and some fabric glue to attach the new ribbon.

To create my monogram, I purchased some white iron-on letters from Hobby Lobby.  These are the same brand of letters I used to make my monogram napkins.

What I love about these letters is they allow you to create a true three-letter monogram.

Joy Monogram Letters

The only downside is the letters only come in white so your design options are limited.

I came up with an easier solution and all it took was a Sharpie.  To get the black letters I wanted, I used a Permanent Sharpie Marker and colored over each letter.

thumb_IMG_2636_1024 2

All that was left to do was to position my monogram onto the back of the hat and iron it in place.

(before ironing, cover the letters with a piece of fabric so you don’t get ink on your iron or burn your letters)

Monogram Straw Hat

This was such an easy update and now my hat that looks like it was made for a Mediterrian cruise.

The hat is available in four other colors so take your pick and make your own chic summer sun hat.

Fashion Trend: Seed Bead Jewelry

I’ve been making jewelry ever since I was a kid.  After I got the hang of it, I tried my hand at making a necklace using seed beads. #majorfail   In fact if you were to look through my jewelry supply box today,  you’d see an entire case of seed beads that I’ve collected over the years.

Seed Bead Earrings

via anthropologie

If you’re not familiar with seed beads, they are the tiny beads you see on those popular tassel earrings everyone is wearing, those beads on decorative pillows and the ones on those trendy summer tunic tops that are in all the stores.

Seed Bead Pillow

Even though they are tiny, seed beads are great because of the intricate designs and beautiful color combinations they create.

During Spring New York Fashion week, I noticed seed bead jewelry as part of several designer runway shows and I’m glad to know that this jewelry style has become a hot trend.  One day I may pull out my stash of seed beads and try making a necklace again but until then I think I’ll shop for some seed bead jewelry.

SHOP MY FAVORITE SEED BEAD JEWELRY STYLES:

 1)  Piñata Tassel Drop Earrings–$36.00   2)  Seedbead Necklace–$18.00
3)  Seedbead Bracelet–$16.50  4)  Majorca Lariat Seed Bead Necklace–$48.00
5)  Kyla Earrings$25.00  6)  Orange Beaded Earrings–$16.00
7)  Danita Cuff–$49.00  8)  Zoey Clip On Earrings–$35.00

Etsy is another great source for handmade seed bead jewelry and Biulu Artisan Boutique has one of the best selections of intricate designs I’ve ever seen.  The shop sells necklaces, bracelets, earrings along with complete jewelry sets.  Each piece  is handmade in western Mexico and the designs are inspired by many Native American groups including Iroquois, Cherokee, Aztec, Maya and Inca.

I also loved reading the story of how this shop started, how the business has grown and now supports many of the people in their community.  You can read the Biulu story here.

So who else out there loves the look of seed bead jewelry?
