Creative Space Inspiration {plus a few creative links}

Cheers to the weekend!

When it comes to creative work spaces, the space below is one of my all time favorites.  I love how open the room is and the sense of organization and order.  And despite all the structure in the room, the space exudes warmth and creativity.

Even if you don’t have a creative space as big as this, you can be inspired by some of the details in this room:

♦  Use baskets to add texture, warmth and organization

♦  Use decorative tags to label baskets, bins and storage boxes

♦  Create a sense of order by using one style of storage box or binder

♦  Opt for nontraditional seating if it works for how you use the space

♦  Add a narrow counter height table to serve as your computer desk and then use a large table as a work surface

♦  Hang decorative lighting to add style and highlight the work area within the room

Favorites from the new Ikea Catalog

2016 Ikea Catalog

The last couple of times I’ve gone to Ikea the store has been under construction with new vignettes being constructed and old products being liquidated.  Seeing all of that going on only meant one thing…the release of the 2016 Ikea catalog was nearing.

2016 Ikea Catalog3

2016 Ikea Catalog4

I received my copy of the catalog a few days ago and boy oh boy are there some really awesome items in it.  From new furniture to textiles and pillows, there are so many items that on are my shopping list.  And as an admitted paper addict, I’m loving all the new paper products they have too. I can’t wait to make a trip to the store to pick up a few of my favorite things but for now I thought I’d share them with you here on the blog.

The Maryd Tray Table is such a versatile piece that could be used as a night stand or even  side table.  $69.99

IKEA--MARYD TRAY TABLE

Ikea is one of my favorite sources for baskets and this lidded Nipprig Basket is a steal at $16.99.  Such a chic way to store kids toys, blankets and magazines.

If you’re looking for stylish office storage that won’t break the bank, these Fjalla Magazine File will fit the bill.  And at $4.99 for a 2 pack you can fill your entire bookcase with them.

I don’t have any space for a new chair but if I did I’d definitely buy the Nipprig Chair.  Can’t you just image this painted in a bold, bright color?  $49.00

I’m a fan of Ikea’s Billy Bookcase but the Valje Shelf has so much more style with the off-set shelves and the white-washed wood grain finish.  $149.00

I’ll definitely be picking up a couple of these Risatorp Wire Baskets at $12.99.

The Varv Ceiling Light is one of my favorite new lighting fixtures and I think it would look fabulous spray painted gold, silver or copper.  $49.99.

Treasure Hunting at Scott Antique Market (and a few regrets)

Slide1

It’s been months and months since I was able to carve out some time to go to Scott Antique Market but last Thursday I made time in my work schedule to make it happen. Boy have I missed treasure hunting at one of the best antique markets in the country.

This show as a bit different from most as many vendors decided to attend the World’s Longest Yard Sale instead of Scott, which happens the same weekend every August. Even with fewer vendors, there were still lots of great things at the market.

Here’s a look at some of the pieces I spotted  while treasure hunting...

The market always has a great selection of vintage and handmade furniture in every design style so it’s a great place to shop if you’re looking for something really unique.  These tiered end tables were really stunning and I could totally see them being used as night stands.

IMG_9935

One of my favorite chair vendors is always stocked with beautiful linen and burlap dining and occasional chairs.  I loved the woodwork detail on the back of this one.

IMG_9936

Pillows, pillows everywhere with lots of vendors selling pillows in neutral fabrics.

IMG_9937

This vignette caught my eye.  I have a pair of those wood risers but never thought about using them to elevate lamps.

IMG_9938

There were a couple of ceramic vendors with the most beautiful Japanese pottery.  Most of the pieces were on the expensive side so I passed but lots of people were snatching up ginger jars and bowls.

IMG_9939

One vendor had nothing but blue and white but again it was pretty pricey.  If I remember correctly, the ginger jars along the front were $125.

IMG_9958

I loved this lamp because of the shape–I think it was around $100.

IMG_9959

This mirrored chest was a beauty and on sale!

IMG_9940

I saw more mid-century modern pieces at this market than I’ve seen in the past.  The details on this table and chair set grabbed my attention and the fact that it was also in pristine condition.

IMG_9941

IMG_9942

Like I mentioned before, you’ll find every style of furniture at Scott including lots of farmhouse/rustic pieces.  Some of these pieces are vintage and others are handmade to look vintage.

Great lines on this table.

IMG_9952

This cabinet was really pretty although the color was not to my liking.  And check out all those cut stools on top of the cabinet.

IMG_9953

Here’s a beautiful chunky farm style dining table.

IMG_9955

There are lots of industrial pieces at this market too.  I loved this metal storage cage and could just image this in a mud room or garage to hold shoes and stuff.

IMG_9956

I usually don’t walk away from Scott’s having seen any big trend statements but this chair has me thinking that lavender is going to be a popular color for 2016.

IMG_9960

One of the things I always do when I walk the market is to keep an eye out for diy inspiration.  I spotted this framed wall sconce and thought it was a great way to UpStyle a thrifted light fixture

{ frame + wood + sconce + wood beads=stunning}

IMG_9961

The Scott market is always a great source of dough bowls and vintage wood accessories.

IMG_9943

wood rakes

IMG_9944

pizza boards–$40 to $65

IMG_9945

wicker demijohns (this vendor has really good prices on these bottles)

IMG_9946

Scott Antique Market is a big place, consisting of two buildings and outdoor spaces.  There’s so much to see and sometimes my philosophy of “if you love it, buy it” gets pushed to the back of my mind as I walk the aisles.  Inevitably that results in a few market regrets and this trip was no exception.

Here’s are three things I wish I had bought but didn’t…

These lamps were amazing!!!  They were in great condition, I loved the shape and bonus–there was a bulb socket inside the basket so that lamp could be lit both on top and under the wicker. And, they were only $75 for the pair.  I know…I’m still kicking myself.

IMG_9934

Another regret were these vintage grain sacks.  They were priced between $25 and $29 and in good condition.

The only saving grace with these is that the vendor is a monthly regular and will probably have them again at the Sept. show.

IMG_9951

I spotted these vintage wood blankets and was mesmerized by how gorgeous they were.  I wanted the second stripe from the right, on the top row.

IMG_9957

So folks, that’s a quick summary of my treasure hunting adventure at Scott Antique Market.  I’ve got my calendar cleared for the September show and have my fingers crossed that some of my regret items just might make a second show appearance.

Design Chat with ConfettiStyle–Vol. 2

Slide4

Thanks to everyone who’s submitted a question of the Design Chat series.  Keep them coming.

In today’s installment of Design Chat I’m addressing a question from Sheila related to her sectional sofa.  Here’s what Sheila asked…

We have a Large sectional sofa. It has been in the same position for 11 years. I like to rearrange things, this is the first time I have not rearranged!! So I divided it… Much to my husband disapproval . I have one complete couch four seats with arms, and the other part is three seats with a corner. I have them facing each other. I love how it looks! Makes our large living room look cozy, and don’t feel the need to shout to have a conversation. If I could I would attach a picture…. But not sure how on this new device!
What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance.”
Sheila

♦♦♦

Well, based on Sheila’s question and some of the other questions I’ve received, finding the right decorating solution involving a sofa is a big challenge.  And when you have a sectional, the challenge can be even greater.

Before I answer Sheila’s question, let me address the pros and cons of a sectional sofa.

PRO:  Sectional sofas can be really functional in large rooms when lots of seating is needed, especially for TV viewing.  And you can find or order just about any configuration in a sectional that you need so creating a custom layout to fit your space is easy to do.

PRO:  Becasue sectional sofas are made up of different sections, it’s easy to move the pieces apart to accommodate guest or a party set-up.

PRO:  Sectional sofas are good for small rooms since they can be pushed up against a wall and into corners while keeping the center of the room open.

PRO:  Sectional sofas can be less expensive than buying a sofa and multiple chairs to fill a room.

CON:  Sectional sofas don’t give you a ton of re-arranging options.  If you like to rearrange your furniture often, know that you probably won’t be able to do so with a sectional. It will probably only work ONE WAY due to TV viewing, door openings etc.

CON:  If you ever want to re-upholster your sectional it will be considerably more expensive to re-cover vs a traditional sofa.

CON:  Picking the right color of fabric for your sectional is key because there is so much fabric making an impact in your room so picking the wrong color could become a major eye-sore.

♦♦♦

So now to answer Sheila’s question…I think separating your sectional is a great idea!  Not only does it create a more intimate seating and conversation area but splitting up the sectional will give your room a less boxy feel and make it feel larger like you noted.   Also, splitting up your sectional could allow you to bring in additional side tables which would actually make the area more functional for guest. A few other things to keep in mind…

♦  To maintain the lounge feel that the sectional had when it was all one piece, consider adding an ottoman or footstool so your husband can prop his legs up.

♦  If you have the two sectional pieces flanking a TV or fireplace wall, it will actually create a much more dynamic focal point within the room.

♦  Make sure you have the right size rug under the furniture to anchor the seating area and the room.

♦  You can get creative with the pillows on the two sectional pieces as long as you have a few common pillows on each side.

So Sheila, separating your sectional sofa gets my vote.

Here are a few inspirational photos is case the hubby needs more convincing.

More Hightlights From The Atlanta Gift & Home Furnishings Show

I’m back to share a few more highlights from the Atlanta Gift & Home Furnishings show I attended last week.

As I mentioned in the previous post, the Atlanta show is one of the largest gift and home furnishings shows in the world and you’ll find every type of home decor and gift item imaginable.

Here are a few things that caught my eye…

♦♦♦

Handcrafted paper flowers designed by Balushka!  Truly amazing.

I came across the work of artist Christoper Marley that encompasses the most beautiful insects I’ve ever seen.  This collage of insect shells and butterflies was captivating.

This wall of mirrors was created as for visual impact  and is something you could recreate on a smaller scale in your own home.

IMG_9461

There were lot of amazing furniture pieces…

I saw a lot of pickled wood pieces

Design Chat with ConfettiStyle!

I hope your week is going well.  The Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishings market is happening this week and I’m headed down there to see the new trends to check out the new product introductions.  I’ll be sharing highlights on Instagram so follow along there and I’ll also have a full recap of market next week here on the blog so stay tuned.

Today’s post is the start of something new.  Last week Ann posted a question on the blog and I decided it was the perfect question to launch my Design Chat series.  This new series is where I’ll answer your design questions and offer up suggestions to solve your design challenge. I’m hoping to post a Design Chat question once a month but if the questions start rolling in I’ll post more often so send your questions my way.

♦♦♦

Most of the questions I receive on the blog come with no photos so I’m taking the information I receive and using that to visual the space.  Ann’s description was pretty straight forward so I think I have a good idea of her challenge and the layout of the area she is working with.

This was Ann’s question…

“We have a long sectional couch that is floating away from the wall in our living room. Behind it is a 2-story wall of windows. Would you place a console table behind the sofa or up against the window wall? Does the console need to be the entire length of the sectional? It’s pretty long, so would you do multiple console tables? I was thinking of putting stools underneath it for extra seating and people would still be facing the TV/fireplace, just sitting behind the couch. It’s about 5′ between the back of the sectional and the wall of windows, and it’s wasted space right now – any other ideas on how we could style it and make it more usable?”

I envision the space to look something like this…

Slide1

via basset furniture

There are several options for this design challenge:

OPTION #1–place a large console table or even a desk behind the sectional length that faces the fireplace and TV which will fill that area and create a functional zone.

Stools could be nested under the table or two accent chairs could be used so the space could function as a desk surface.  The chairs or stools could be moved into the room when additional seating is needed and the table surface could be used to serve food or drinks from when entertaining.

Slide2

OPTION #2–place a console table behind the sectional piece that sits in front of the window.  With 5′ between the back of the sofa and the windows, you would want a table that has a depth between 24″ and 28″ so that a walkway is maintained between the table and the windows.

Lamps could be used on the table as long as there are floor outlets to prevent the cords from running across to the window wall.  Also, if the windows don’t have curtains and the lights are on at night, the exposure to the room will be wide open.

Sectional with sofa table and lamps via Liz Marie Blog

via Liz Marie Blog

Or, you could decorate the table with a grouping of accessories.  If you go the accessory route, larger accessory items would be best to balance the scale of the two-story windows.

Slide3

via pottery barn / pottery barn

OPTION #3–place furniture behind both ends of the sectional.  In this case the two pieces do not have to be match.  A console table could be used behind one side of the sectional and a chest behind the other which would provide additional storage.

Sofa with check

via apartment therapy

A couple other suggestions and tips:

♦ The console table does not have to be the same length as the sofa–in fact I’d have a little breathing room at each end of the sofa.  If you find a table that you love but it is shorter than desired, try placing baskets or even small accent chairs at each end of the table to ‘visually’ elongate it.

via decor pad

♦ If you don’t already, consider drapes between the windows to soften the window area.

There are several ways to approach any design dilemma but the bottom line should be to go with the solution that works best for your lifestyle and your decor.

Ann, I hope this answers your question and gives you some ideas to play around with.
