Design Trend Defined: Boho Chic

Bohemian Style Home2

Did you know that the definition of Boho Chic can be found in the Urban Dictionary?

The term Boho Chic as it relates to clothing is described as a fashion trend that is part bohemian and part chic. It is tied to the vintage phenomenon in fashion where the trend was to bring back vintage styles for the modern era. Boho chic combines organic, colorful, detailed, folk-inspired pieces with simple, modern pieces.

The trend is said to have been started by actress Sienna Miller in 2005 when she wore bohemian-style clothing in the movie Alfie and back then the style was only expected to be around a few years and then fade away.  The boh0 look became a hit and people began to imitate the style and fashion designers took notice.

Inspiring Work Spaces, Style Details and Organizing Ideas

via My Domaine

I love a beautiful office space like the one above from House of Harper.  A space doesn’t have to be big or super fancy to grab my attention, it just has to be efficient and filled with stylish organization and lots of personality.

I have an entire pinterest board dedicated to office, craft and hobby rooms with over 500 images of some of the most beautiful and creative work spaces ever.  The common thread within all of the spaces I admire are the style details and organizing ideas.

Spotted At HomeGoods for Spring

IMG_8518

It’s been a while since I’ve been to HomeGoods.  It usually takes them a good month + to restock their stores after Christmas so I usually wait until mid February or March to see what’s new for spring.  I’m fortunate that there are four HomeGoods within a 10-15 minute drive from my house. Having been to all of the store many times, I’ve learned which ones get the most stock and have the best inventory.

A couple of days ago I popped into two HomeGoods stores.  The first store was lean on merchandise but they did  one great piece that stopped me in my tracks.

This small acrylic table was just gorgeous and I imagined how great it would look as a side table, or bar cart.  I was surprised to see it in the store but at $99.00 I think the price stopped a lot of people in their tracks.  (update:  I posted this table on Instagram and like me it was a hit.  I went back to get the style number for someone and unfortunately it sold the evening that I saw it)

IMG_8489[1]

The other HomeGoods I went to is my favorite.  The shelves are usually filled to the max and they always have a great selection of furniture.  Here’s a look at what I spotted…

These marble top nesting tables were stunning.  I love the two-tone marble combined with the chrome base.  I’d pair these with a pair of leather chairs to create a stylish seating area.

This rustic wood media console was well made and the wood tone was really nice.  This would be an easy piece to mix with modern or eclectic decor.

IMG_8498

The color of the year, Marsala is well represented in HomeGoods and I spotted it in this sleek desk/console table.  The gold x-legs and crystal knobs just add to the style of this piece.

There were lots of fret work pieces in the store.  I’ve seen this mirrored chest of drawers before and still love it.  It would make the perfect night stand.

IMG_8504

Finding oversized coffee table can be a challenge sometimes.  This wood beauty had great lines and a nice finish.  The glass top and bottom would add an airy feel to a living space.

IMG_8507

HomeGoods must be predicting this metal cross leg table a winner because there were about 6 of them in the store.  The height is ideal if someone is looking for a nightstand with minimal details.  I think it would also look great in a bathroom holding towels and personal care items.

IMG_8508

There were lots of small side tables to choose from in varying styles, shapes and finishes.

IMG_8509

This round brass and marble table was my favorite.

Spring is garden stool season at HomeGoods and they continue to bring in updated styles in great colors.  Blue is definitely a trending color for spring and they has several styles to choose from.

IMG_8516

I loved this green stool and really considered buying it.

IMG_8517

This orange table/stool was so cute and would make a fun accent table on a sun porch or in a kids room.

IMG_8515

There were lots of chairs in the store but this is the only one that really caught my attention.  I love the detail of plaid on the back.

IMG_8502

HomeGoods has been carrying more and more headboards and this twin headboard was a winner.  The orange piping was the perfect detail to dress up the neutral fabric.  How cute would this be paired with that orange stool above.

IMG_8503

If you’re in the market for an ottoman to put at the foot of the bed or use as a coffee table, now is the time to shop.  Most of the ottomans were storage ottoman too which gives you more bang for your buck.

The pillow shelves were overflowing.

If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again…you can’t beat the lamps at HomeGoods.

The store I was in had a great selection of bold brass lamps

and some really great decorative styles in ceramic and metal.  These striped lamps were killer!

And if you’ve gotta entertaining on the calendar for spring, be sure to check out the housewares section for beautiful plates, bowls and serving pieces like the lemon plate at the top.

So, have you spotted anything great at HomeGoods for spring? #homegoodshappy

Similar to “get the look” post that you might see on other blogs, my goal for each Product and Inspiration post is to share a product I love along with inspirational design photos using that item (or something very similar) AND a design tip or two.    I hope you enjoy “shopping” with me and more importantly I hope you’re inspired to decorate your life in style.

Design Crush: Studio McGee

The internet is amazing!

Have you ever stumbled upon a room photo where a single item like lighting has caught your attention?    You click to find out more about the lighting and fall into a black hole of design.  Well it happened to me recently after I saw the light fixtures in this work space but instead of falling into a black hole I found myself in a place a bliss!

Studio McGee6

The shape and gold finish of these light fixtures caught my eye and the work space was also intriguing.  A few clicks later and I found myself on the website of the design team behind this simple but beautiful space–Studio McGee.

If you’ve never heard of Studio McGee before, let me give you an overview.  Studio McGee is a design company run by husband and wife team, Syd and Shea.  Fueled by Shea’s love of design, the two started the their own design business and have been creating beautiful spaces ever since.

What I love most about the rooms design by Studio McGee is the clean, crisp esthetic and the use of vibrant color accents.  Many of the spaces incorporate black walls which can sometimes be a challenge but they seem to have found the formula for using black in just the right way.  I also love that when designing a room, they use a mix of modern and traditional elements which keeps their spaces looking timeless instead of trendy.

Love the pops of color and brass accents.

Design Guide: How to Style a Sectional Sofa

One of the design consultations I had recently got me thinking about the do’s and don’t of styling a sofa.  Not just any sofa, a sectional sofa.

I think a lot of people are attracted to sectional sofas because they offer abundant seating and because they seem to provide a bit more comfort than a traditional sofa.

After a while I think people can become disenchanted with their sectional sofa because they recognize that a sectional can limit the traffic flow within a room and sometimes a sectional feels overpowering in a space versus relaxed.

In my years of designing rooms, I’ve recognized that it’s not always the size, scale or placement of a sectional that causes the disenchantment, but instead its the fact that the sectional and the space around it are not styled or accessorized in the best way.

Anatomy of A Linen Closet–Organization and Style

One of the areas that can get out of hand in most homes is the linen closet.  Just like the junk drawer in the kitchen, the linen closet can become a catch-all for any and everything if not kept in order.

As an admitted ‘over-organizer’, I can’t stand an unruly linen closet.  I want my closets  to be organized, functional and pretty.  To help me keep my linen closets in order I employ a handful of organization and design tricks and the end result is always a winner.

Next week is going to be a crazy one.  I got called back for more jury duty questioning, for a big case here in Atlanta and I have my fingers crossed that I don’t get picked.  In anticipation of a busy week, I’ve completed two design plans early, I’ve written all my blog post for the week ( I’ve got some good ones for  you) and a new stack of magazines is ready to accompany me to the court house!
