What’s New at Ikea

I’m sure most of you have already gotten the new Ikea catalog in the mail and a lucky few have probably had a chance to go into the store to check out all the goodness in person.  I’ve yet to make time to visit the store but I have had time to turn down the corner on many pages in the catalog.  There are so many new items I’m loving and lots of old items I seeing in a new light after seeing them in newly styled photos.
My list of must-see items is long but I’ve managed to narrow it down to a handful of top picks I wanted to share with you.  These are the cream-of-the-crop in my book.
Slide1
1) The Stockholm Sofa, which I’ve already seen on many blogs and Instagram feeds.  This baby is going to be super popular and the green velvet is by far going to be the color of choice.  My love the this sofa has gone so far as to ask the hubs if he likes that color, which is something I normally don’t do unless I’m serious about a piece.
2) Hjalmaren Wall Shelf is pretty slick.  The catalog showed it styled in a bathroom but I can see this with books in a library or kids room, or even in my office 🙂
3) What’s not to love about this Stockholm chair?  I think it would make a pretty darn cute desk chair.  My vote is for the stain finish, but it’s also available in green.
4)  My pulse quickened when I saw this yellow Stockholm cabinet.  I love everything about it from the glass doors to the legs and the door pulls. Just wait, I predict you’re going to see this on many a design blog over the next few months.
5)  How cute is the Vittsjo table??  When I saw it I thought about all those times I’m trying to work in front of the TV and how handy this would be.  For $24.99 I can already see this being a hot DIY paint project for bloggers across the globe.  Don’t you think it would look great in gold or red?
6)  The Ullgump rug!  The name is nowhere near as awesome as this rug.  It’s available in black and white also but my vote is for the orange and white color combo.
7) The Stockholm 2-Drawer Cabinet is just too darn cute.  I love the emerald green color and the wood stain finish on the inside.  I’d replace the wood legs with some chrome casters to really make it sing.
Just in case you’re wondering what other items caught my fancy, here are a few that almost made my cream-of-the-crop list:
Pg.157, item 13–Is this the new “it” rug from Ikea??
Pg. 288, item 1–This would be so pretty with pink flowers in it!
Pg. 200, item 1–Could be really stunning in a powder room!
I can’t wait until my schedule opens up and I can get to Ikea to do a little in-person browsing and shopping!
So, what’s new items are you loving from Ikea?  I’d love to know!

Scott Antique Market: An Old Freind and New Treasures

August 2013 (18)
Happy Monday my friends!!!!  I’m so sorry to see the weekend end because mine was filled with lots of fun.
First up the hubs and I made the trek out to Scott Antique Market.  Attending a gigantic antique market in 95+ degree weather is not something my husband likes to do often but he’s a trooper and when Scott’s falls on his Friday off he usually joins me on my shopping adventure.  I’m so glad he went this time because we ran into a good friend that just opened a booth in the North building.  Our friend Steve owned and operated one of the top showrooms at the mart for many years and I used to buy from his product lines when I had my store open.  In addition to the mart showroom, Steve has operated several antique spaces here in Atlanta on Bennett Street and on Miami Circle, which happen to be the diamond district for antiques in the ATL.  Steve recently closed his showroom at the mart and has opened a booth at Scott’s. …

What Inspires Me

Greetings!  I hope you had a splendid weekend. Most of my weekend was spent indoors working on projects, writing blog post, adding new Etsy items to my shops and getting things around me organized.  Whenever I have lots of time at home I find myself evaluating things in my life…my goals, my businesses, my bucket-list, my happiness and my sources of inspiration.  It’s a time when I tune into what sparks my creativity, what makes me tick and what fuels my dreams.  I thought I’d take today and give you a little look into head and what’s been inspiring me lately. 01b7b24131c73f54a4b576bcca0cd39b

Inspiration + Weekend Reads

I tend to like a home that feels collected and full of handmade and vintage pieces.   It takes the right mix of textures, colors, finishes and materials to pull this look off. This room is just that to me, a combination  of pieces that have come from different places yet mix together to create a single point of view…comfortable, cozy and inviting!
Enjoy your weekend and these reads…

This IDEA HOUSE is full of Ideas

Have you had a chance to check out the photos from the latest Southern Living Idea House?   Located in Nashville, this southern farmhouse is the perfect mix of style, comfort, coziness and warmth.

The color palette throughout the home is soft and calm but with enough depth to keep things interesting.  I adore the bedroom in shades of cream and soft grey and especially love the window treatments.

The mocha infused living room is just so cozy.  Again neutral textiles and accessories were used as a contrast to the natural wood tones of the floor.

This family room is just so inviting.  The wood beams are from a 1890’s Tennessee barn and the furnishing and accessories are a mix of antiques, vintage and new pieces made to look old.
If you really take the time to look through all the rooms of this house, you’ll find inspiration around every corner….

Paint, Pillows and Pink

Happy Monday!
Thanks everyone for the sweet comments about my wedding anniversary and the hubby’s birthday.  The weekend was one big celebration with some thrift shopping thrown into the mix.  All was good in the world!
Last weekend I came up with the idea of painting our bedroom armoire black.  Naturally I did some research on Pinterest before I made the final decision but was pretty sure black was the color so choice.  Our bedroom is not large and has a combination of several stained wood pieces.  I wanted to mix things up a bit while still keeping true to the mostly black and white color theme so painting the armoire black and changing up a few pillows and accessories was the plan.
Here’s what the room looked like before, with yellow and grey as the accent colors.
IMG_1293
I kept the wall décor pretty simply and used accent pillows on the bed and ottoman to add interest.
IMG_0890
The black, yellow and grey color combo is great for the fall and winter.  There is just enough color to give the room some energy on cold, dark days.
IMG_0895
I had the ottoman covered in black with a white mini dot and used a combination of solid and patterned pillows.  The black and white diamond pillow I made from a .99 cent bandana and I added the black buttons to the yellow pillows that I already owned.
IMG_1253
The black silk drapes  have a black-out liner {because I need to sleep in total darkness} and were up-styled with the addition of a black and white trim.
IMG_1302
Many of the accessories are silver, white and yellow to go with the overall color theme.
IMG_1288
You can see the armoire here with its stained finish.  I love mixing stained finishes with black and white because it keeps the space rich without being too dark.
I’m going to have the chair re-upholstered but for now it has a black tone-on-tone diamond print slipcover on it.
That’s how things looked until a little paint, pillow change and some pink were added to the mix.
Here’s what the room looks like now…
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (73)
Solid pink pillows (cushions from Ikea) replaced the yellow and grey pillows and I added a patterned pillow I made from dinner napkins I purchased on clearance at World Market.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (87)
I also made the black and white dot pillow and the black and white lattice pillow cases (fabric from Hobby Lobby).
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (84)
The white and black bedspreads stayed the same.  I have several different pillows I place on the ottoman including a solid red and a grey and white patterned pillow which was in the chair before.

The yellow floral pillow works on the ottoman too and picks up the yellow in the patterned pillow on the bed.
At the foot of the bed are two storage baskets that I added some DIY vintage inspired tags to.  I’ll share this easy project with you later this week.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (71)
Here’s the armoire after getting several coats of black paint.  Of course the sun was shining in full glory when I was taking this photo so excuse the glare.
The black paint we used was Clark and Kensington {Ace Hardware} Ace of Spades.  It’s a deep black with a hint of dark charcoal in it.  This was the first time I have painted with Clark and Kensington paint and I really liked how it performed.  We had a paint and primer in one so it went on smooth and has a nice finish.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (51)
I changed out the knobs to these beauties.  I L.O.V.E. them.  They are from none other than Hobby Lobby.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (62)
For an added touch of glam I lined the drawers with this fun black and grey animal print drawer liner.  (TJ Maxx)
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (97) copy
Here’s a detail shot of the top of the armoire.  I used the same drawer liner paper to cover two round boxes and added in the basket for texture and shape, the mercury glass vase for shine and the black finial for dimension and height ($3.00–Hobby Lobby clearance).
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (52)
Here’s a look inside at the drawers and the bottom shelf.  The black and white animal print box works great with some of my milk glass pieces and my silver tray with perfume.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (48)
I placed another basket inside the armoire too.
(the numbers on the basket tags are all numbers that have significance in our lives)
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (89)
Here’s a look at a wall décor grouping in the room. I painted the abstract piece of art and the sweet dreams canvas.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (55)
I love lots of texture in a bedroom.  It just feels cozier to me.

Here’s another baskets that holds reading material on my side of the bed.

One of the things I always try to do with the pillows in my décor is to find patterns that work together and can be switched up seasonally.  Pulling colors from a key pattern in the room is a great way to build a color palette that relates.
The pop of pink is perfect for summer and we really love our “new” armoire.  It always amazes me how a little paint can change the feel of a space.
I hope you enjoyed my bedroom update and I’ll see you back here tomorrow.

DIY Rope Projects

Summer is the time of year when you see more natural, neutral and coastal inspired décor.  One of the design elements I love this time of year is rope details.
Years ago I made my first rope covered lamp and at the time I thought it was pretty awesome.  Rope DIY projects have come a long way since then, getting more sophisticated and stylish.  Check out these Rope DIY Projects that have me inspired for summer!
Slide1

This is such an easy and inexpensive way to transform simple glass vases into coastal inspired flower vases for summer.  I would even go so far as to paint the rope in a color to match the décor of the room.
8312fa4766e729671bed4bd15a077001
How awesome is this mirror?  The next time I come across a round thrift store mirror I just might have to give this a try.  The lighter colored rope makes this piece suitable for a more transitional space too.

This is probably the coolest rope DIY project I’ve seen.  What a great way to transform one of those old wood TV trays into a side table.  A pretty cool idea for a night stand too!

Love these rope tables.  Just add a glass top to make them really functional.

I’m definitely going to give this project a try.  I have several of those inexpensive mirror rounds from Hobby Lobby that will make the perfect center piece.

So what do you think?  Is there a ROPE DIY project in your future?
