Design Chat: The Perfect Pillow Formula

Creating A Pillow Assortment For Your Sofa.001

image via BHG

Happy Monday friends.  I’ve got another round of my Design Chat series for you today and I’m answering a question about selecting and styling pillows for your sofa.

Deziree is having trouble selecting pillows for her living room sofa and posed the following question to me…

” I have had the hardest time styling my living room. I have purchased probably 8 sets of curtains, multiple pillows, hand-made covers, and I still have not finished it. My walls are a grey taupe and my sectional is tan and I currently have natural ivory off white linen curtains. I would love help with picking pillow colors, patterns, shapes and amounts for my sectional. Any suggestion”?

I’ve gotten this question on more than one occasion from readers and I hope the tips I’m sharing will help you if you’re struggling with your pillow decor.

Dream Home–My Favorite Rooms From The 2016 HGTV Dream Home

dh2016_front-yard-full-house-straight-on_h.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.966.644

Have you had a chance to check out the 2016 HGTV Dream Home?  Every year HGTV decorates a beautiful home and holds a contest to give the fully furnished home plus a car and cash prize away to one lucky person.

Every year I look forward to see the beautifully decorated home and every year I enter the contest and cross my fingers that I’ll win.

Every year my sweet husband who happens to be a tax man reminds me that if we did get lucky enough to win we couldn’t keep the house because of the enormous tax liability that comes with it!

And every year I continue to dream.  This year was no exception.

p.s. it’s reported that only one winner in the history of the giveaway has kept the house.  Most winners have sold the home or taken the cash option which allows them to pay the tax debt and still have some mad money left over.

Let’s go on a mini tour of the home and check out my favorite spaces in the home…

For the first time ever, instead of building a brand new home, HGTV decided to remodel an existing one for the 2016 Dream Home.  Located in Merritt Island, Florida, this years home has undergone a total transformation thanks to designer Brian Patrick Flynn and has a style and vibe perfect for its Florida setting.

OUTDOOR POOL & LANIA

I love a beautiful outdoor space and this outdoor patio and pool area of this home are gorgeous. The area was designed for entertaining and lounging, all centered around a gorgeous pool.

BACK LANIA

I love that multiple seating areas were created which make it ideal of large gatherings.  The paint color on the windows and doors is a perfect match to the outdoor furniture creating a harmonious feel between the indoor and outdoor space.

LIVING ROOM

The living room has a causal vibe because of the soothing colors and abundant seating.  I love the trio of light fixtures that serve as a focal point for the room and mirror the details or the coffee table.

KITCHEN

I’ve written about using furniture pieces in a kitchen before so you know I love the cream cabinets that were used in this space along the windows.  What a unique was to incorporate storage and a serving area into a functional kitchen space.

MASTER BEDROOM

While the coastal colors used throughout the home are not my style, I love that Brian painted most of the ceilings in the home.  The master bedroom was dressed in a  bold aqua color and along with the white furniture the room really pops.  You gotta love the beaded chandelier and the gallery wall which was designed to incorporate the TV.

GUEST BEDROOM

And the last area of the home that I love is the guest bedroom.  Again, dressed in coastal colors the peach + neutrals is really pretty.  I’ve always liked the idea of a desk as a night stand alternative and love the accessorizing that was done in the bedroom.

The entire Merritt Island home is stunning but these are the spaces that really stood out to me and where I’ll be spending all my time if I happen to win!

You can hop over to HGTV to check out the entire home and see all of the before pictures.  You won’t believe what the exterior of the home looked like before they started the transformation.

  • Ethan Allen is the primary source of furniture and décor

Jenny Wolf

I came across this image when I was looking at photos from interior designers homes.  This cozy little corner belongs to Jenny Wolf, a New York based designer who once worked for Ralph Lauren.  What caught my attention about this space was the beautiful soft pink chair and the vase full of seeded eucalyptus.  The rest of the home which you can see here is also filled with great details.

And be sure to check out these links, which I’m sure you’ll love.

Sideboards Aren’t Just For Dining Rooms

Sideboards.001

A classic dining room sideboard is a great piece of furniture to have in your home.  Beyond the dining room, a sideboard can be used in many different decorating applications.  Here’s just a few to inspire you.

Sideboard In A Hallway

A sideboard can be placed at the end of a hallway and used as the foundation for a decorative vignette.  A bow front sideboard is an ideal style for a hallway since the sides slope inward and provide more space to move around each side.

Placing a sideboard in the foyer creates impact and drama at the entrance of your home and it will give you a natural landing space for useful items like mail, keys and bags.

Sideboard In The Kitchen

A sideboard in the kitchen is a fantastic way to personal your kitchen decor without giving up any functional storage or workspace. Select a piece that has ample cabinet and drawer space and when it comes to color, instead of painting your kitchen cabinets or island, use this piece to add a vibrant pop of color to the kitchen.

Sideboard In The Office

I love how Kris from Driven by Decor used a sideboard for storage and decor in her home office. In an office space, a sideboard can provide lots of surface space to hold decorative objects and office equipment can be stored behind closed doors to keep your workspace neat, tidy and stylish.

Sideboard In The Bathroom

Just as it would in a kitchen, a sideboard in the bathroom can add distinct style plus the bonus of added storage space.  Most vintage sideboards can be retrofitted to accommodate bathroom pipes, sink vessels and vanity countertops so you there are lots of design options to fit your style.

Sideboard In The Bedroom

The idea of a sideboard in the bedroom has been a popular trend for the last few years. A TV can be hung over a sideboard and the cabinet space can be used to hold clothing in the same way a traditional bedroom dresser would. Mid-century modern styles are great for bedrooms because of their simple and minimal style details.

Sideboard As A TV Cabinet

Most definitely one of my favorite ways to use a sideboard is as a TV cabinet.  Under a TV, the sideboard takes the edge off the big black box above it and keeps the room looking decorative and stylish. The bad news… sideboards with closed fronts won’t work with traditional TV components since the infrared signals will be blocked.  The good news…there a electronic kits that you can install to work around this issue and many cable companies now offer wireless boxes which can be placed anywhere in the room.

One question I hear a lot is about the difference between a sideboard and a buffet.  Here’s the scoop...

♦  When it’s placed in the living room, it’s called a sideboard.
♦  When used in a dining room, it’s called a buffet. Traditionally, buffets in the dining room are not only used for their storage purposes but also to display meals before serving.
♦  When an open front cabinet is added to the top of a buffet for additional storage and display options, the piece is called a hutch.

Today you can find quality sideboards at thrift stores and flea markets.  Here’s what to look for when shopping for vintage sideboards:

♦  Think about the space the sideboard will go. The height and depth of a vintage sideboard will vary, so make sure that the space where the sideboard will be placed is measured carefully and think about how you’re going to use the piece which might determine your size needs.

Consider what type of storage the sideboard offers.  Not all sideboards have drawer and cabinet space so if storage is a must, look for a piece that offers both types of storage.

♦  Analyze the quality.  The first thing to do is to check the stability of the legs, doors, drawers and pulls.  Does everything open and close smoothly and is the piece sturdy?  Also look for dovetail joints which are a sign of quality craftsmanship.  And a manufacturers stamp and company logos can indicate the age and quality of a piece.

I hope this post gets you thinking about sideboards in a new way. Thanks for stopping by!

We all have them?  Favorite design details that we want in our existing home or in our dream home.  Those special touches and design elements that speak to us and creates the personal retreat that makes a house a home.

A few months ago I shared with you that my dream home is a Cape Code style home on the water.  I’m constantly dreaming about what that home would look like on the outside and how I’d decorate it on the inside.   My approach to decorating would be to include all the elements that consistently appeal to me, many of which exist in my current decor, details I’m constantly drawn to on Pinterest or rooms that spot me when I’m flipping through design magazines.  My favorite design details are all elements that are classic and timeless but would still let me infuse my own personality and style into the decor.

Define Your Design Style

Design Style.001

I taught a design workshop right before Christmas that focused on seasonal décor and fashion.  During the workshop I presented decorating tips and design ideas to inspire those in attendance with their design and personal style.  As I look back on the workshop I recognize that the ideas presented ran the gamment from casual and country to chic and traditional.  It’s always my goal to present a range of ideas that anyone can identify with, since everyone’s style is different.

The workshop also got me thinking about people who don’t have a clear vision of what their style is and in-turn find it challenging to decorate their homes.  If you fall into that category, this blog post is for you.  I’m outlining the steps you can take to analyze and define your design style so decorating becomes a joy and not a job.
