Design Chat: Office Organization & Decorating Ideas

Hello friends. Sorry for the lack of blog posts the last few days.  I’ve been attending the Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishings show for the last week and just couldn’t find time to sit at the computer and finish up the blog post I had planned for the week.  The show is over, I’ve caught up on some rest and I’m ready to jump back in the saddle again.

Today I’m bringing you the first Design Chat post of the year and I’m addressing a comment left by Liz  about decorating her office space.  In addition to decorating ideas, Liz wanted tips on organizing her workspace without sacrificing style.  I know many of you are dealing with office space issues too, so here’s some design advice and decorating inspiration that I hope will help.

Design Chat: Office Decor and Organization.001

Decorating an office space, whether in the home or out, can be challenging.  You’re trying to strike a balance between functional and organized with inspirational and pretty.  When it comes to organization in your office here are the things you want to address:

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE–disorganization happens when you don’t have an easy and accessible place to store every day items.  Add style by using decorative containers to hold office supplies.  And when shopping for containers, don’t just shop the office supply area, look for unique containers in the kitchen and bath department, at craft stores and even in home decor stores.

tip:  go vertical where possible to maximize every inch of your office space

DECORATE WITH FURNITURE THAT WORKS IN MULTIPLE WAYS–a divided bookcase is one of the best pieces of furniture you can use in a home office.  Each cubby can hold different items and items can be organized in baskets, boxes, jars or other containers adding to the decor of your space.

tip:  keep smaller objects organized in baskets and bins and use larger items for display and visual impact

Office storage--masculine

via

tip:  painted file cabinets (an easy DIY) can be used in place of a side table or console table while offering you loads of storage space

File Cabinets

via

USE EVERY AVAILABLE INCH OF SPACE–when you look around your office space, keep your eyes open for unexpected areas where you can incorporate storage and organization.  Hang wire shelving or cork boards on the inside of closet doors and place lidded baskets or a small file cabinets under your desk.

Desk Storage

via

CREATE ORGANIZATION THAT’S MOBILE–many times a home office has limited space so getting creative with how and where you store supplies is necessary. Rolling carts can be used to hold desk accessories and offices supplies, and can be pulled out when needed and stored in a closet when not in use.  Magazine files, baskets and bowls can hold items on the cart and make it easy to move those items to your desk surface when you’re working.

tip:  rolling carts are idea for wireless printers and other office machinery

CREATE COHESION WITH COLOR–there are lots of ways you can organize papers, files and supplies but using a color system not only adds to the style of your office but can help you create a storage system that’s easy to manage.

Identify a specific color for different categories of products like receipts, office tools, paper or computer/camera accessories.

tip: pick a color theme that energizes and makes you happy so you’ll feel good when you’re working in your office

Office Organization

via

PUT A LABEL ON IT— labels will make finding things in your office easy and make putting things back a breeze.  Use a label maker or print labels on sticker paper so that the style, font and color is consistent throughout your office.  Consistency=order and visual beauty.

tip:  label holders with handles work great on magazine files, cabinet doors, filing cabinets and baskets

MAKE YOUR SPACE PRETTY & INSPIRATIONAL:  include decorative elements that are pretty, inspirational and remind you of your goals and wishes.  Decorative clipboards are my go-to office accessory and not only serve as wall decor but are functional when I need a writing surface outside my office.

tip:  make your own decorative clipboards using craft supplies or shop decorative clipboards here.

Now that you have some tools to help you get organized, let’s take a look at some of my favorite office spaces around the web…

Office Space Inspiration:

This compact office space does not lace style or personality.  The gold accents create a theme and even the extra side chair become a stylish way to store books.

I’ve shown this image on the blog  before and it continues to be one of my all-time favorite office spaces.  The cabinet along with the shelving provide major storage and display space, and the baskets and boxes add the stylish organization every office needs.

As the market approaches, I’ve also started getting new catalogs in the mail from all the major online and retail furniture and home decor stores.  I spent a little time the other night flipping through them and wanted to share 11 home decor products I’m loving right now.

Design Details: FIVE Rooms I Love and the reasons why

Dissecting the Details--COVER.001

It’s my job to dissect the details of a room to evaluate why the design, layout, furnishing or even the details work.  To give you a little insight into my design thought process, today I’m sharing 5 rooms that caught my attention and the reasons why I love each space.

♥♥♥

Creating a comfortable and stylish living space directly off the kitchen can pose some challenges.  You want the two spaces to feel connected yet have their own identity.  And you also want there to be some common threads with the color palettes between the two spaces.

I love this living space below because it shares the same wall color as the kitchen which creates that sense of unity.  And I also love how the wall facing into the living space was painted a soft accent color which helps define where one room starts and the other ends.

Design details to love:  layered rugs, potted plants on the mantle, a mix of pillows and that wood covered oven hook!

via LilyPadCottage

LilyPadCottage

Even though you can’t see this entire room in this photo, you definitely know that it’s a fantastic space.  What gives most rooms its personality is the mix of decor, textiles and finishes used to decorate it.  This living space feels right, warm, personal, collected and inviting because of the design details used throughout.

Design details to love: Animal prints (every room needs one), collected grouping of objects on the table, neutral background with pops of color and a gallery wall that’s interesting!

Driven By Decor

Driven By Decor

Even the smallest spaces in your home can have a powerful design statement. Foyer spaces should draw guests into the home while setting the tone for the homes design style.  This foyer space feels so personal because of the collection of framed photos and treasures on the table.  Don’t be afraid to use lots of items to make an impact–repeating shapes and materials will tie it all together.

Design details to love:  Glass cloches (a great way to display collectibles), wood on wood (different wood tones make it work),  gallery wall frames in the same color story but in different shapes and sizes (harmonious but interesting)

CasaSugar

CasaSugar

Colorful rooms have been trending for a few years now and they are most successful when the room has a neutral or white base like this one.  The room also works because colors are repeated which creates the common thread within the decor.

Design details to love:  Two coffee tables (glass keeps the space visually uncluttered), books arranged by color and touches of black (another thing every room needs)! Oh, that sofa color is pretty amazing too.

DecorPad

DecorPad

Bedrooms don’t have to be bland or even cost a fortune to decorate.  I love this room because of the soft color palette which in my opinion doesn’t feel too masculine or feminine.  I also love the layers that have been created with the furniture, textiles, rug and accessories.

Design details to love:  Desk lamps on the nightstand (use what works), a cowhide rug layered over an area rug (cowhides feel elegant), console tables instead of traditional night stands (use baskets underneath if you need storage), a dynamic accent wall (this one was created with tape) and pop of pink.

When it comes to dissecting the design details in your home, look for the elements that bring you joy and that make your home feel good.

Happy Friday!

5 Decorative Items To Buy at Walmart!

What to buy at WalMart.001

I think a lot of people shop Walmart just for kitchen and beauty staples and have never recognized that they also carry some great decorative pieces too.   If you take a look around the store you’ll not only notice stylish containers and dinnerware but there are some nice accent furniture and storage pieces as well.

Whenever I’m at Walmart I browse the aisles looking for what’s new and thought today would be a great day to share FIVE decor pieces I think are worth buying at Walmart.

Happy Shopping!

The Heritage Jar has been one of my favorite jars for several years now.  When I first spotted it at Walmart I think the price was $10 and even though the price has increased a bit to $16.29 it’s still a good value.  The glass is thick and at a one gallon size the jar is one of the most functional and stylish way to store dry goods in the kitchen.

Deal alert:  I just spotted a 2 gallon version of the Heritage Jar at Target for $13.99 which is an even better deal

I love finding a good deal on lampshades and Walmart has a classic drum shades at a great price.  This Better Homes and Garden Black Drum Shade is only $12.97 but has the look and details and higher priced shade.  You can’t go wrong with this!

And if you want even more style in your lampshade, I absolutely love this Black and White Cow Lampshade for only $25.00

Finding a nice looking bookcase can be challenging.  This BHG Crossmill Bookcase is a great piece and I love the weathered finish and the $199.88 price tag.  It also comes in a version with lower cabinet doors for $109.00

When it comes to organizing, baskets and bins are an essential design element and I especially love bins that have some character and charm to them.  Walmart sells lots of different basket and bin styles but at the top of my list is this Galvanized Bin.  There are two sizes available ($7.47 and $12.44) which means you have a size to fit all your decorating and organizing needs.

Design Chat: Foyers–Vol. 3

Design Chat--Decorating Foyers.001

I’m back with another installment of Design Chat.  This time I’m answering a question from Katie regarding her foyer.

“Shelly, I am struggling with how to decorate my foyer.  The space is rather small and once inside the door, the dining room opens up on the right and there is a wall on the left which is about 8 feet long.  I’ve tried different furniture pieces and nothing seems right or is balanced against the dining room opening and  furniture.  Can you give me some tips and ideas on how to decorate a foyer.”  –Katie

I asked Katie a couple of questions to get a better understanding of her space and the image above represents the general layout of Katie’s foyer.

♦♦♦

The Design Tips:

Foyers come in all shapes and sizes and can be challenging find the right combination of furniture, wall decor, accessories and lighting to fit the space.  Although challenging, there are a few design guidelines I can share to help Katie and anyone else decorating their foyer:

♦  Foyers often serve as a decorative spaces while at the same time needing to have some functional aspects (drop zone for keys, mail etc.) to the design so keep that in mind when selecting furniture, accessories and lighting.

♦  Select furniture that fits the scale of the space.  Since there is a long wall that you want to place furniture on, select a piece that fills at least 50 to 75% of the wall space.  Small scale furniture on a long wall will look wimpy.

♦  Lighting is always a great addition to any foyer space even if it will be used just for ambient light.  Wall sconces are a nice alternative to tabletop lamps and don’t forget to put your lighting on a dimmer to control the light intensity within the space.

♦  Rugs will help ground your foyer and create a landing spot for guest as they enter and exit your home.

♦  Mirrors are a smart wall decor choice especially if your foyer doesn’t get a lot of natural light.  Mirrors will magnify any light coming into the foyer giving it a brighter appearance.

♦  If the foyer is a main entrance and exit point for the home and there is room for seating, a chair or two flanking a console table or cabinet is a nice addition. Chairs ccreate an additional layer of design, color and pattern.

♦  If the overall foyer space lacks architectural details (chair rail, wainscoting) consider wallpaper, a paint treatment or decorative molding to add interest to the wall and serve as a backdrop to your furniture and decor.

The Inspiration:

Furniture with artistic details like this cabinet will add a lot of drama to a foyer.  And notice the accessories–although they are not symmetrical, the groupings on each side of the cabinet balance each other.

Foyer Table

via

Open console tables keep a small foyer from feeling over-crowded and the space under the table is ideal for a bench or ottomans which can also be used for additional seating in other parts of the home.  The size of the artwork is proportionate to the size of the table and the lamps are in scale with the overall arrangement.

Foyer Table2

via

Baskets under a console table provide the perfect spot to drop gloves, shoes or even a handbag.  And the texture it provides is an added bonus.

Foyer1

via

Another alternative to a table or cabinet in the foyer is a bench.  A bench creates a cozy feel and can function as a spot to place bags upon entering the house.

Foyer 7

via

The Solution:

So for Katie, here’s the recommendation for her foyer:

♦  fill the narrow wall space near the door with a grouping of three art pieces

♦  create a furniture and decor vignette on the long wall

♦  add an area rug for color, pattern and softness

Office Chair Makeover

Hartman Office Chair

I bought a new office chair months ago and knew that I wanted to give it a little makeover. The chair is the Pearson Desk Chair from Ballard Design and I found it at the outlet store for $39, a big discount off of its regular price of $249.

When I first told you about the chair, I had replaced the casters with metal ones and I was debating between painting the frame gold or black and had also narrowed down several fabric options.

Slide1

Well, I decided on a gold frame and made a slight change in the fabric.

Here’s the new look of my desk chair…

thumb_IMG_0452_1024

I used Rustoleum Specialty Metallic Gold Spray ( a great gold spray paint) paint and applied two coats to the frame.  To add an additional layer of protection to the frame I sprayed on two coats of Krylon Clear Gloss Acrylic Coating.

thumb_IMG_0449_1024

The fabric I decided to use is a leopard print velvet that I snagged during a fantastic sale at Boca Bargoons here in the Atlanta area.  The fabric was originally $59.99 a yard but the store had a weekend sale with select fabrics 75% off so it only cost me $15.00/yd.   I bought enough to cover my chair seat and make a pillow.

Even though I had originally planned to use a larger scale pattern I love  how this fabric looks with the gold frame.  And at $15.00 I won’t feel guilty if I decide to change it up in the future.

I’m glad to have another project checked off the to-do list and now I can definitely work in style!

Vintage Finds From Everything But The House

EBTH--Vintage Bamboo4

Last Friday I told you about Everything But The House (EBTH), a revolutionary way to shop for vintage and antique items online.  After getting to know how the auction system works and how easy it is to place bids on EBTH, I decided to give it a try.

Everything But The House

One of the first things I purchased was this bamboo and wicker end table.  The table is manufactured by Emerald Craft Inc., was in really good shape and has classic bamboo furniture details.

The only thing I didn’t like about the piece was the color but I knew a couple of coats of spray paint would give the table a new personality.

Emerald Craft Bamboo

So here’s the new look after a couple of coats of gloss black spray paint.

IMG_0485

I’m so happy with the piece and how it looks now.  The size of the table is ideal for a corner or nook and works great as a spot to drop keys near the door.  I also like the three shelf surfaces which provide lots of decorating options.

EBTH--Vintage Bamboo

A smaller brass tray {thrifted} fit perfectly on the middle shelf and works great for extra storage.  And of course you know I love the combination of black and brass.

EBTH--Vintage Bamboo5

I placed a stack of books on the lower shelf along with a blue and white ginger jar.  This beautiful Asian ginger jar is another piece I scored from EBTH.

New sales start everyday on EBTH so have fun bidding and I let me know if you win something awesome.
