Furniture Fave: Acrylic Console Tables

Cheers to a new week!  Did everyone have a great weekend?  I started the weekend working with a client and then spent the rest of Saturday running errands and trying to get my desk organized.  I spent a good part of Sunday working, doing laundry and getting ready for our road trip.  We’ll be hitting the road on Thursday morning headed to Texas and the RoundTop Antique Market.  I’m beyond excited to shop RoundTop again, spend time with friends and make our pilgrimage to the Silos in Waco.  I’ll  be sharing my adventures on Instagram so hop over and follow me if you don’t already.

The goal for the next few days is to see just how much time I can squeeze out of the day and get checked off my to-do list!  Wish me luck.

Today I wanted to share a little about one of my favorite furniture pieces–acrylic console tables.  I’ve been a fan of acrylic furniture for some time and love the clean, crisp look a piece of acrylic adds to a room.  In the process of researching an acrylic console tables for a client, I’ve come across several style options and a range of prices. In general, acrylic can be expensive because the price of plastic has risen over the last few years.  But, I’ve found the best deal at CB2, the sister company to Crate and Barrel.

The Peekaboo Console Table is available in two sizes–38″ which sells for $379 and the 56″ which retails for $699.  In addition to the price, I love the thick molded acrylic and the waterfall design.

Acrylic Console Tables--Peekaboo Console from CB2

Acrylic console tables work perfectly in a large room with lots of furniture.  The clear material adds dimension without creating additional visual clutter.  And the waterfall design  adds a modern touch.

For my clients project, we’re planning to nest a couple of upholstered stools underneath which will provide additional seating and visual interest.

Here are a few other ways you can decorate with acrylic tables…

Spring Easter Tablescape by ConfettiStyle

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. The weather is getting warmer,  flowers are blooming and it’s almost time for picnics in the park and long evening walks.  The coming of spring is such a mood booster for me and I’m just giddy that it is staying light outside until almost 9:00 o’clock.

Now that spring is here, I’m starting to see lots of spring blog tours popping up on the web.  I don’t do much in the way of decorating for spring but I do love creating pretty seasonal tablescapes. And it just so happens that my friend Tamyra with Positively Southern is hosting a fun ‘Spring Thyme Recipe & Style’ blog hop and invited me join the fun.

There are a total of 9 bloggers on this tour and today is just part one of the blog hop.  We’ll all be back next Tuesday (3/28) to share more spring style and recipe inspiration so mark your calendars.

If you’re coming over from Clutter Cafe, welcome.  Lisa is one talented (and sweet) lady and a hard act to follow.

Spring Easter Tablescape by ConfettiStyle

Whenever I plan a seasonal tablescape, I look for something to inspire the theme.  Can you guess what my inspiration was for my spring Easter table?  Rabbits of course!  I spotted the rabbit beverage pitcher at HomeGoods and immediately knew I wanted to use it as a flower vase. #unexpecteddecor

Rabbit Pitcher (similar here )

Once I had the pitcher home, my color palette of green, pink and white fell into place and I went on the hunt for a green and white table runner. #fail.

After searching a few stores without any luck, I decided to make my own using inexpensive cotton fabric.  The fabric is a soft green color with an all-over white lattice pattern.  It’s exactly the design I wanted for my tablescape. Once I cut the fabric to size I used iron-on hem tape to finish the edges and had my runner done in about 10 minutes. And it cost me less than $10 to make the runner and 6 napkins.  #score

Flowers are always part of any tablescape I create so I surrounded the bunny pitcher with a mix of floral styles and colors.  I combined hot pink orchids, white anemone, green hydrangea and pink peonies.  The flowers are cascaded down the center of the table and add so much dimension to the centerpiece.  Once I had the flowers in place, I tucked a few ceramic bunnies amongst the flowers to bring my Easter theme to life.

I opted not to use traditional placards on my table and instead did some hand-lettering on ombre tags I picked up at Michaels.

Did you notice the floral placemats under each place setting? Well it’s actually scrapbook paper I had in my craft stash.  Scrapbook paper is the perfect size for a placemat and the floral pattern and colors worked great with my table decor.

Whenever you build a tablescape you should create layers with your decor. I used the mini cake stands to add height and placed a small dip bowl on top filled with chocolate eggs for added color.

The white dinner plates are my mom and dad’s wedding china and I love the pretty etched floral design around the edge.  It coordinates perfectly with my paper placemats.  The black and white place plates are from C. Wonder which is no longer in business. #imissthatstore

And if you hadn’t already guessed it, all the flowers except the tulips are silk.

Now that I’ve created my Easter table, I’m pretty sure the Easter bunny will be dropping off an Easter basket at my front door.

Fabric Shopping (and what it says about home decor trends)

I discovered a new fabric warehouse the other day and all I can say is WOW!  Before I entered the showroom the customer service rep warned me that there was a lot of fabric behind those doors.   Man oh man was she right.

Walking through those doors was like walking in a fabric wonderland. There were rolls of fabric, stacks of fabrics, hanging fabric and more remnant fabrics than the eye could see.

As I walked the aisles, I began to take note of the colors and patterns I was seeing so I’m sharing that with you today.

FABRIC & HOME DECOR TRENDS

MAD FOR PLAID–Large buffalo plaids appear to be a pattern that is gaining in popularity.  Where you once just saw classic colors like red, navy and black you’re now seeing plaids in every color and every size scale.

Cotton blend plaids have a more causal feel to them and so I prefer linen blends which have more texture and dimension. Plaid patterns are ideal for window treatments, pillows and furnishings as you’ll see in these inspirational images…

MELLOW YELLOW–Pantone identified Primrose Yellow as one of the trending colors for 2017 and while I didn’t see a lot of bold yellow fabrics, I did see lots of soft yellow.

Most of the fabrics in the yellow color family were traditional floral or geometric designs perfect for upholstery, drapes of bed linens.

SHADES OF BLUE–With the popularity of blue and white decor it’s no surprise that there are lots of blue and white fabric patterns on the market right now.  I spotted florals and well as more modern geometric and boho inspired designs and the color palette ranged from deep navy to shades of teal.

FLOWER POWER–Bold floral motifs are a trend that forecasters identified for 2017 and the fabrics I saw supported that.  From tiny prints to large oversized designs, feminine florals have a fresh, modern feel.

I love the look of this antique, washed-out floral fabric.

The mum design was bold and had lots of texture and dimension.  I could envision this on club chairs or an ottoman.

BLACK & WHITE--Never will I tire of black and white patterns.  Black and white are a classic color combo and pairs well with anything you put with it.  The white with black plaid at the top would look great made up in pillows.

50 SHADES OF GRAY– Many of you may want to see the grey color trend go away but I think it will be around for a while.  Grey is a great way to introduce color into your decor when you don’t want to go all white but want a little color.

I also noticed lots of fabrics that combined grey and soft teal which is always a pretty palette.

PRETTY IN PINK-The pink fabric aisle was one of my favorites.  Instead of looking like fabrics for a baby’s room, the patterns looked modern and updated.  The second fabric down was gorgeous and you know I love the animal print.

I snapped a lot more pictures but the visual eye candy has to end sometimes, right?

Finding the perfect fabric is key to a beautiful space and I’m so glad it’s something I get to do as part of my job.

p.s.  I’d love to know which of the fabrics I spotted grabbed your heart!

Happy Friday, friends.

Design Guide: 10 Components To A Beautiful Home

Design Guide: 10 Components To A Beautiful Home

Every designer you ask will have a list of key components they think are essential to the design and function of a beautiful home.  And while my list may differ from others, I think all designers would agree that each of the items on my list contributes in one way or another to how a home looks and feels.

 #1   A STYLE BLUEPRINT

I meet clients all the time that don’t have a good handle (or vision) of their design style.  They know if they like an item or not but they can articulate clearly the overall look for a room or the mood they want a room to have.  Once you define your design style you’ll be able to envision the decor of your home, down to the details.

Defining your style encompasses many different elements, from the colors and materials you like to the style of furniture and accessories that appeal to you.  And don’t worry, defining your style doesn’t happen over night. Your style can change throughout the years just like you do.

One of the ways that I have my clients convey their style to me is by going through design magazines and tagging anything that appeals to them.  Then I have them jot down a word or two telling me what they like about the image they tagged.  The word ‘cozy’ on a room photo with warm colors may convey the colors they like. The word ‘clean’ may be associated with a room that is streamline and clutter free which tells me a lot about how they want to a room to look and feel. Once you have a stack of tagged images you can look through them and begin to see the common threads in the design style that appeals to you.

#2  A FOCAL POINT

The focal point of a room is a lot like a statement piece of jewelry.  It’s an element that captures your attention, serves as a dominant statement and in some cases sets the tone for the rest of the entire room.

The focal point in some rooms may be an architectural element like the windows or a fireplace.  In other rooms it my be a wall decor arrangement, a rug, artwork or even a sofa.

Identifying or creating the focal point within each room of your home will give you the starting point upon which to build your overall design theme.

#3  SPACE PLAN

We all know that the way furniture is positioned in a room can impact the way a room feels and functions.  Arranging furniture so that movement can happen easily in, out and within a room is critical to the overall design of a space.

When decorating a room think about the scale of the furniture and accessories to ensure they won’t swallow up space and make the room look visually cluttered.  For the Key Measurements You Need To Know When Decorating Your Home, check out my post here.

#4  TEXTURE

In my book texture is one of the most important elements to design.  Texture provides visual interest, depth and dimension and its also one of the elements that makes a room feel inviting.  As it applies to design, texture is defined as ‘the sensations caused by the external surface of objects received through the sense of touch’.  But it can also be a ‘perceived sense of touch’–you can experience texture visually without having to actually touch something.

Texture can be introduced into your decor through the fabrics you choose, the materials accessories are made of as well as the style of your doors, windows and walls.

#5  MIXED METALS & MATERIALS

Variety is definitely the spice of life when it comes to decorating a room.  You don’t want one-dimensional decor…you want a home that explodes with interest and personality.

While your style blueprint may dictate a particular type of furniture and accessory style, you want to decorate with a mix of materials and finishes in order to bring your decor to life.  Don’t be afraid to mix gold with silver, leather with velvet or glass with metal.

#6  A MIX OF OLD & NEW

Years ago the trend was to shop your favorite furniture store or catalog to decorate your home.  While it was easy, many homes ended up with decor that was cookie-cutter and uninteresting.  Just like mixing metals and materials, it’s a good idea to mix the age of items you decorate with.  Pair vintage and antique pieces with newer items to build the character within your style blueprint.

#7  PERSONAL TOUCHES

If nothing else, your home should feel personal and reflect you and your family.  Personal touches like family photos, books, artwork and collected pieces should be used in every room in your home.

As you decorate, be thoughtful in the placement of accessories and keep these tips in mind:

♦ Arrange accessories in odd numbers in different sizes.  It’s been proven that grouping objects in odd numbers is more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.

♦  Objects that you place together when creating arrangements should have something in common: color, shape, theme, texture, vintage.

♦ Balance the art and accessories throughout a room. Don’t place everything on one side of a room.

♦ Scatter your accent color in at least three places around a room to create visual movement.

♦  Keep scale in mind with pairing accessories.  Small accessories clustered together or scattered throughout a room will look like clutter from a distance.  Use medium to large-sized accessories which will be noticed and seem more important as you enter a room.

#8  STATEMENT WALL DECOR

I think every room would have a wall decor statement that stands out.  That could mean a single piece of art or a grouping of pieces that create a dominant visual impact.  Based on the layout of your room and the architectural elements within the space, your wall decor can serve as the focal point.  For creative wall decor inspiration, check out this post.

#9  SUFFICIENT LIGHTING

Most homes I go into lack sufficient lighting  and without the right lighting and the correct amount of lighting, your home won’t look as good as it could.  There are three types of lighting every room needs:

AMBIENT LIGHTING:  Ambient lighting includes chandeliers, recessed lighting, or sconces, all of which provide overall illumination to a room. And the use of dimmers with your ambient lighting will give you control over the light levels allowing you to easily change the mood of a space.

tip: When wiring your rooms, include multiple circuits. This will allow you to dim some lights while keeping others brighter.

TASK LIGHTING:   This lighting is particularly important when performing specific tasks like cooking, doing office work, or getting ready in the bathroom.  In the kitchen, pendant and under-cabinet lighting can illuminate food prep areas. In a living room or bedroom, table lamps and floor lamps will provide task lighting.

tip: Even illumination is essential when planning your bathroom lighting plan. Make sure the same amount of light comes from the sides of the room as the top of the room. This will help prevent shadows and create the ideal bathroom lighting for applying make-up or shaving.

ACCENT LIGHTING:  Accent lighting can be used to highlight objects like art, sculptures, and architectural details within a room.   Classic track lighting and picture lights are the most common types of accent lighting, but candles also fall into this category.

#10  SOMETHING NATURAL

Something natural is a little detail that can make a big impact.  A plant in a corner or a vase full of flowers or stems will give life and energy to your decor.

Are you aware that TJ Maxx has an online store?  That’s right, you can shop TJ Maxx from the comforts of your home.

The product assortment in the online store isn’t as extensive as what you’d find in your local store but the prices are the same. And I see items online that I’ve never seen in my local store which might give me another reason to shop online.

An if you can’t find your size (hello shoe department 🙂 or two of one item, the online store might have the item so its worth checking out.

When I checked out the online store the other night, I saw several items that peaked my interest.  Let’s go shopping shall we…

Favorites Of The Week | A little of this and a little of that

Between working on projects and dealing with the insurance company after my car was hit, this week has been a bit frenzied.   I’m glad to see the weekend and very happy to have a little down time.

Isn’t this basket the cutest?  It’s a simple DIY project I spotted on the OKL site and you can recreate it for less than $25 with these tassels and this basket.

Favorites of the week-- Posts, Projects and Pins

It’s a boots and sweater kind of day and I’m off to run errands, attend a blogger meet-up and then its game night at my brothers.

A few favorites from the past week, enjoy!

Diary of a room makeover.  So good!
Fill the gap between passion and success.
Five plants that can detoxify your home.  I’m headed to the nursery this weekend to pick up one or two.

Pillow Pairings | My Favorite Black and White Pillow Styles

Raise your hand it you own this black and white pillow cover from Ikea.  I think half the world owns the Lappljung Ruta cushion cover, including me!

I think the appeal of this covers is the graphic design, the sturdy fabric and of course the black and white color combo.  And let’s not overlook the $10 price which makes this pillow one of the best design deals around.

Ikea Black and White Pillow

While I love the Ikea pillow, I think its time a new black and white pillow becomes the darling of the design world. To find a winner, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite black and white pillows/cushion covers along with the accent pillows I’d pair them with them when decorating.

Check out my pillow pairings and leave me a comment and let me know which is your favorite.

Black, white and greek key are always a winning combination and a classic look that will be around for years to come.  The black velvet pillow pairs beautifully with this dusty blue Schumacher floral fabric and a tan and white mini animal print.

This woven black and white pillow has a casual vibe that is perfect for a sectional or sofa.  Because of the texture, I’ve paired it with a deep yellow velvet pillow and an abstract floral so the look is relaxed and carefree.  The black and white woven pillow would also look great paired with other black and white pillow designs.

By far my favorite black and white pillow grouping!  This textured black and white pillow cover is so versatile that you can easily pair it with other patterns.  Since I love all things emerald green I used that as the accent color for this combo.  The floral pillow keeps the overall look soft while the velvet green pillow with greek key keeps the look classic.

If you like a more modern vibe, you’ll love this combo.  I like how the bold design of the black and white grid pillow mixes well with a modern strip and Asian floral design.

I’m starting to see black and white buffalo check pillows all over Pinterest so it looks like this pillow design is a new favorite amongst designers and design bloggers.  An oversized plaid like this works will with ditzy prints and florals and you can go with just about any color combo you want.

Tips For Pairing Pillows Like A Pro

*************************************************

  1. Ensure all pillows have a consistent color theme.  If you’re using a black and white pillow as the foundation, pair it will other designs that include black, white or both colors so there is a connection amongst the pillows.
  2. The scale of patterns should balance each other, not compete for attention. A good rule of thumb is one large , one medium and one small.
  3. Texture is important and can be visual texture (what the eye sees) as well as tactile texture (what you actually feel).  Texture adds warmth and depth to pillow pairings and should always be a part of your pillow mix.
  4. The size of the pillows matter.  Just like you scale the size of print, you want different sizes of pillows. Here’s a winning combo you can always count on…

For the sofa:  (2) 24×24 pillows  + (2) 20×20 pillows + (1) Lumbar pillow  //  For a loveseat: (2) 20×20 pillows + (1) Lumbar pillow

So, which black and white pillow is your favorite and which pillow pairing do you like most?
