Portfolio Review: Interior Designer Mark D. Sikes

5-HBX090116toc3-sikes-800x965

After sharing the room image above in Saturday’s post, I spent some time going through the portfolio of the designer that created this space.  If you’re not familiar with the work of Mark. D. Sikes, I’m going to share more of his work with you today.

Mark D. Sikes started his career in visual merchandising and marketing and honed his skill of creating spaces that are filled with beautiful details, classic design elements and a mix of modern and European furnishings.  In 2011 he started his own design firm and has been soaring ever since with numerous magazine features and show house designs under his belt.

What I love most about Mark’s work is the mix.  I mention the “mix” a lot here on the blog because of think it is one of the more important design aspects of any room.  The mix comes through variety–a variety of textures, colors, finishes and styles.  Mark is a master of the MIX!

As you look through the images of his work below, take note of how each room is styled and how items are layered to create a distinctive look for each space.

This colorful and eclectic space below is showcased in the September 2016 issue of House Beautiful. The Asian art and the eclectic mix of accessories are my favorite details.

It’s clear from Mark’s work that chinoiserie and bold color are part of his signature style. Many of his spaces include a chinoiserie design garden stool (one of my favorite accent pieces).

In addition to residential projects and show houses, Mark designed Reese Witherspoon’s Nashville store, Draper James.  He created a space that exudes southern charm and style representative of Reese.

Curb Appeal: Corbels As A Design Detail

house with corbels

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I got a lot checked off my to-do list and also managed to fit in some downtime with a Sunday drive.

One of my favorite things to do on a sunny weekend is drive through neighborhoods and check out the exterior decor of homes.  I enjoy looking at the details that give homes their character like shutters, doors and corbels.  Traditionally corbels are used as a support feature to hold up a structure but more and more you are seeing them as both functional and decorative elements.

♦♦♦

Some styles of home like Spanish or Cape Code are just meant for corbels and large, oversized designs like these really make an impact along an exterior bank of doors and windows.

Brackets3

via

They can be simple or elaborate in design and a trend you’re seeing a lot of now is the use of reclaimed or weathered wood to give the home an old-world look.

Deen/Groover Residence

I love corbels as an accent framing the door to a home.  They are a great alternative to columns or pillars and add so much style to a porch overhang.

Corbels-3

On a true southern style home like this, they add to the charm of the exterior.

If adding corbels to your exterior decor is not an option, look at adding them inside as a beautiful architectural detail. They are a great way to frame and visually anchor a room, window or doorway.

Corbels are a quick and easy way to add style to your home, both inside and out.

Behind The Blog: Profiling Bliss At Home

I’m so excited to share the latest installment of my Behind The Blog series because it features one of my favorite design and style bloggers, Kristin from Bliss At Home.

I started following Kristin shortly after she started her blog in 2012 and quickly became a fan and admirer of both the blog and Kristin’s design work.  Over the last four years, Kristin has developed Bliss At Home into one of the more recognizable and followed design and lifestyle blogs out there.  Her work has been featured in both print publications and online media outlets like Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, HGTV magazine, One Kings Lane, Style Me Pretty and Domino.

Most recently, Bliss At Home was named to Domino’s Top 10 Up & Coming Designers to watch which is an honor well deserved.

Bliss At Home

Recently I posed a few questions to Kristin to get an inside look at how she has grown the Bliss at Home brand and what inspires her.  Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy this chat with Kristin.

2016-08-24_15-42-10

First let’s start by telling me a little about the Bliss at Home blog.  When did you start blogging and what inspired you to start the blog?

I started B@H in June of 2012 to start to explore design more and connect with other creative.

Running a successful blog isn’t easy. Any advice you can share with someone wanting to build their blog into a business?

Be willing to go the extra mile. When you want to turn your blog into a business, you have to look at working with brands and publications as budding relationships. Only work with brands that you are 100% behind and make sure they are happy with the terms of your partnership.

Investing in a blogger is a really big deal for a brand as it is for you to work with them. Be selective. When you are working out the terms of your partnership, be transparent and honest about your stats, other companies that may be involved in the project, and what they will get out of working with you. Be willing to be an “over-sharer” on your blog and social media. Tag them and continue to cultivate that relationship. A lot of times, these partnerships become long-term relationships and lead to bigger projects. As the brand sees your quality of work and has the knowledge that they can trust you on a business level you will continue to work.

How would you describe your decorating style?

This is always such a hard question for me to answer, ha,ha! Well, does ever-evolving count? For the moment I would say I am a modern traditionalist who loves Mid-century, Parisian flair, and Chinoiserie touches.

Bliss At Home

Your home is beautifully decorated—how did you approach decorating and transforming your childhood home?

Carefully. We went room by room, but before we touched a space I knew the story I wanted to tell. I had my surfaces, colors, finishes, etc. all decided on before we started the remodel.

Many people are inspired by your design style—tell us five home decor essentials you can’t live without.

Bliss At Home

Like me, I know you love to shop vintage. What vintage items are always on your shopping list?

Mid-century pieces, bamboo furniture, brass anything.

What is the most treasured piece in your home?

Probably the vintage Italian bar cart Dave surprised me with for Valentine’s day. **You can see how Kristin styled this gorgeous cart here.

Bliss At Home

When it comes to decorating with color, what’s your go-to color palette?

I always lean towards black and white foundations in my home. I’ve worked in grays, mustard, and blush into our home…but the next space I am working on has a huge emerald moment. I can’t wait to share that one!

Where you do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?

Travel is a big one. Old buildings, interesting restaurant design intrigues me. I also like to look to the past. Color schemes that seem out-dated always can cycle back in a new modern way.

Bliss At Home

If you could lunch with any famous woman, who would it be and what’s one burning question you’d ask her?

I’m obsessed with Jane Austen’s novels. I would love to meet her and ask her what her greatest love is.

Bliss At Home

Tell me one or two things that are on your bucket list?

I want to learn how to ski. I’ve only been once and I just want to do it and do it well. When we move out East, I am excited to learn. We are all going to learn as a family.

Bliss At Home

It’s time to share a few of your favorite things…

Favorite Color: Yellow
Favorite Movie: It’s A Wonderful Life
Favorite Flower: Rose
Favorite Food: Seafood, lobster, crab, scallops, fish….all of it!
Favorite Summer Vacation Spot: Cape Cod

What I’m Loving About The Fall 2016 Color Trends (and some product picks)

Even though temps are still in the 90’s and the air is sticky, I can feel the coming of fall.  There is something in the air and I can definitely feel my mood changing. I’m looking forward to the season officially arriving.

In anticipation of the first day of fall I did a little web search to check out Pantone’s fall color picks.  I’m excited about the colors that were selected because all most of them are great colors when it comes to decor. Of the 10 colors that made the list,  there are a few that I’m particularly drawn to.  Today I’m sharing what I’m loving most about the fall 2016 color trends plus I’ve rounded up some product picks to get you started on your fall decor.

Fall 2016 Color Trends

♦♦♦

AURORA RED

Red is my favorite color and even though Aurora Red is a bit more russet in tone, I’m still a big fan.  It’s a color that will mixes easily with neutrals and grey and it works both as a statement color and as an accent.  A mirror or accent pillows is an easy way to add this color into your mix for fall.

3

Aurora Red Product Picks:

The Suzani Appliqué Pillow Cover would make a great accent pillow for a sofa, chair or bed.  And with the popularity of blue and white, I could see this being a great fall update in a blue and white bedroom.

suzani-applique-pillow-cover-o

The Malone Campaign Desk is a great piece for a small foyer, hallway or guest bedroom.  The brass accents really jazz it up and I love the clean lines and simple details.

malone-campaign-desk-vermilion-o

LUSH MEADOW

Yes I love emerald green and yes I’m excited it made the cut for fall.  The Pantone version, Lush Meadow is a bit softer than a traditional emerald but it still has the life and energy that has made this shade of green so popular.

1

Lush Meadow Product Picks:

Garden stools continue to be a popular decor piece and this Safavieh Chinese Dragon Stool is a stylish way to add chinoiserie and emerald green into your decor for fall. #ineed

Here’s a green table lamp I know you’re going to love.  The green glass (a hot style trend for fall) and the faux wood grain lampshade make this Jade Table Lamp a stunner.  And you won’t believe the $139 price. #iwant

SPICY MUSTARD

If you’ve followed color trends for the last two years, you’ve seen the surge in the popularity of the color yellow. Spicy Mustard is the color Pantone has identified as a trend for fall and I love the rich and luxurious look that this color adds to decor.  And If given the opportunity, I’d would definitely own a yellow sofa.

2

Spicy Mustard Product Picks:

I recently spotted this Bradberry Downs collection rug and think it would be an awesome rug to spice up a living room or dining room.  And I love that it can work with black or wood stained furniture and both silver and gold finishes.

287BD8870

If you haven’t jumped on the x-bench trend, the Safavieh Palmer X Bench is a great way to do that. I love the pattern and nailhead trim and would nestle a pair under a console table or at the foot of a bed.

Safavieh-Palmer-X-bench-Nailhead-Maize-Beige-Ottoman-472fb045-5370-4b5c-8bb5-c5cd5d5840cf_600

This Large Glass Vase caught my attention on the H and M Home site not only because of the beautiful mustard color, but also because of the $12.99 price point. #greatbuy

Large Glass Vase

SHARKSKIN

Grey continues to be a hot, hot trend in decor and the focus for fall is a rich, classic shade of grey with an enticing name…Sharkskin.  p.s.  you’ll continue to see the popularity of grey for kitchen cabinets too!

5

Sharkskin Product Picks:

Grey is one of my favorite colors to decorate with in a bedroom.  It’s a soothing and relaxing color with a sophisticated edge.  The Asher Organic Duvet is a favorite for fall especially mixed with black and crisp white.

asher-organic-duvet-sham-gray-neutral-o

This classic chevron patterned throw is the perfect accessory to drape over a chair or sofa.  And it would make a great gift too.

Mini Chevron Throw

RIVERSIDE

Unlike Serenity which is a Pantone 2016 colors of the year, I am a fan of the blue they picked for fall called Riverside.  I love the steely grey undertones of this color and how well it mixes with the richer colors you always see during fall.

4

Riverside Product Picks:

I can already envision this Unlimited Beads Blue Dinnerware set as part of a fall table setting mixed with orange and white pumpkins and lush greens.  #yesplease

Tabletop-Unlimited-Beads-Blue-16-piece-Dinnerware-Set-5ff224df-bee7-4768-b4a3-f168322ef7eb_600

I’d love to get new lamps for our bedroom, and this Blue Ceramic Table Lamp would definitely be on my list of options. The matte blue base and the lattice design lampshade really make it stand out.

So friends, even though we’ve got a few more weeks to enjoy summer, I’ve got fall on my mind and ideas in my head.

How about you?  Are you dreaming of fall and which of Pantone’s fall colors are your favorite.  Do tell!
