Blue and White Spring Tablescape

thumb_IMG_2056_1024

Don’t you just love spring?  The  bright colors, beautiful flowers, birds chirping and all that sunshine.  Spring is one of my favorite times of year and the season always pushes my creativity to new heights.  Over the weekend as I was moving the accessories around, the creative bug hit and I decided to pull together a spring tablescape featuring blue and white.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared seasonal table decor with you so I’m excited to unveil my Blue & White Spring Tablescape!

Blue and white tablescapes have always caught my eye but until recently I never owned enough blue and white decor to create one of my own table setting.  Over the last year or so I’ve collected a handful of blue and white porcelain pieces and together with some new items I picked up recently, my spring table was easy to pull together.  Let’s take a look…

Sunflower Door Basket

thumb_IMG_1982_1024

Hello there.  Is anyone else out there feeling the effects of all this spring pollen?

I woke up yesterday at 6:30 am ready to hit the ground running and get some stuff done.  I had two morning appointments and then had to go by the post office to drop off some shipments.  By 12:30 I was on my way home and feeling a little scratch in the throat but I still felt like I had lots of energy.

Once I hit my garage door I felt like someone had pulled the plug on my energy supply and the idea of sitting at my computer and working didn’t sound like fun.  All I wanted to do was take a nap so that’s what I did.  A nap in the middle of the day is such a magical thing especially when you’re lying on your bed with the sun streaming through the window.

Needless to say I didn’t get around to posting yesterday so today I’m sharing my spring door basket.

DIY Sunflower Basket!

thumb_IMG_1980_1024

When we first got married, my hubby sent me a huge bouquet of sunflowers in a beautiful cobalt vase.  It was the most beautiful arrangement I’d seen and since then I’ve had a love for sunflowers.  They are kind of like an afternoon nap and always put a smile on my face.

thumb_IMG_1974_1024

Anyhow, I knew I wanted to use sunflowers in my spring door basket so I set out to find some.   I hit up my favorite craft stores and some pretty stems but most were $6.99 or more per stem.  Then I stopped by a Dollar Tree to pick up some items and spotted beautiful bundles of sunflowers in the flower aisle.  Sold!

Putting the arrangement together was really simple.

I pulled out this woven basket I picked up at the Country Living Fair last year and gathered a few stems of greenery (from Hobby Lobby) and got busy.

thumb_IMG_1985_1024

I layered my stems placing the green leaf stems at the back of the basket, the sunflowers in the center and the succulent sprays at the front so they would drape down the front of the basket.

I love how the yellow sunflowers pop against the black door and the greenery provide a color and texture contrast.

Here’s my little basket transformed into a water-color image using the Waterlogue app.

Ok, spring….I’m ready for you!

Green and White Decor Inspiration

One of the things I love most about decorating with green and white is that there are so many shades of green to pull from.  This vignette is a great example of mixing different tones of one color to create depth and interest.

Green is a fun accent color in any room and is so pretty mixed in with a bright white palette.

This bedroom space is really beautiful and is a great example of how to pattern mix with success.  It’s all about using different patterns scales so that nothing competes and each pattern stands on its own.

Thanks for stopping by today.  If you happen to see me out and about, don’t pinch me because I forgot to wear green today.

Wisdom and What I Know For Sure

Words of Wisdom

What I Know For Sure

If you’ve ever read O Magazine you’re familiar with the article Oprah writes at the end of issue, What I Know For Sure.

The idea for her column started when film critic Gene Siskel asked her the question, “What do you know for sure?’ during an interview.  The question had become a hallmark for Siskel during celebrity interviews and it made a big impact on Oprah.  Today, Oprah says she uses that question as a way to take stock of her life.

Have you ever given thought to that question?  I often do but recently that question came up during a conversation with a friend as we were talking about having a fulfilling life and career.

Here’s the wisdom I shared with her and What I Know For Sure…

I talk a lot about following your passion on the blog and truly believe that everyone has a calling in life, one that centers around something they have a passion for.  The goal is to figure out what your passion is, what sets your soul on fire and how you can use that passion to help others, give back and make the world a better place.

Having experienced periods of fear in my life, I know that it is one of the key things that hold people back for living the life they want.  If you looked in my high school year book, you’d see that my quote for how I wanted to live my life was to have “no regrets.”  Letting fear control you is what’s holding you back for the job you want, the relationship you want and the dreams you have for yourself.  Let go of the fear and door will open for you to achieve it all.

Like fear, self-doubt can dilute your dreams and rob you of your happiness.  I believe that everyone was put on this earth for a reason and that we all possess our own set of talents and skills, something that no one can take from you.  The goal is to be true to who you are and to find your own path to success and happiness.

I’m sure you’ve heard the quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy”,  and boy does that quote hold so much truth.  I think many people (me included) get caught up in what everyone else is doing and allow that to influence the way we live our lives.  What I know for sure is that if you want to live life to the fullest it doesn’t matter what others are doing, it matters what YOU are doing.

And one of the most important things that I know of sure is that Believing in Yourself is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself.  It’s never to late to change your path, follow a new dream or rewrite your story but as you do that, remember that the secret to having it all is believing  you already do.

Small Space Decorating Tips

Last year I wrote about the Tiny House Movement and how it is gaining in popularity.  Well, a year later and the movement is just picking up steam.

I recently finished an article for a friend of mine who started and published Welcome Magazine here in Atlanta years ago.  She has since moved to New York and is in the process of re-establishing the magazine there.  She asked me to write an article for it with tips for decorating small spaces and I thought I’d share a few of those tips with you here in the blog.

Decorating small spaces can be challenging.  The layout of a room, the style of furniture, the paint color and how to keep the space organized are just a few of the design elements you have to consider.  The tips I’m sharing will help you do all of that without sacrificing style and personality.

Chinoiserie Pillows–Best of Etsy

Jamie Meares

image via Jamie Meares

I’ve been quite obsessed with all things Chinoiserie of late in part because it’s a design style that is super popular right now and also because I just love the eclectic feel the style lends itself too.

Chinoiserie also speaks to my love of color, vintage and bold pattern work.  The Jamie Meares image above just says fun to me and really represent a collected home filled with unique treasures.

The Ralph Lauren image below is another take on Chinoiserie with a more subdues color and pattern statement but with just as much personality and visual interest.

Some of my favorite Chinoiserie styled decorative elements include blue and white pottery, bamboo styled furniture, mirror and lighting and also Asian motif pillows.

Recently I went on the hunt for some Chinoiserie pillows for our bedroom.  I started my search on Etsy and was thrilled to see that there are lots of pillows available on the site.

One of the things I like about shopping on Etsy is that you can get handcrafted items in designer fabrics for a great price.  I also like that shopping Etsy is a way to support independent artist and small businesses, many of which are run out of the home.

Here’s just a sampling of the pillows I found…

Design Guide: My Favorite White Paint Colors

Favorite White Paint Colors.002

Since one of the main focuses of my blog is to share design tips and information with you, I thought I’d do a Design Guide series to talk about paint colors.  Over the next few months I’ll be sharing my favorite paint colors along with tips to help you when you’re selecting paint for your home.  Today the color wheel landed on WHITE so I’m sharing my favorite white paint colors from two of the most popular paint lines on the market, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams.

I know you already know this, but picking a white paint color can be super challenging.  There are hundreds of white paint shades between the Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams lines and finding the right one to work with your decor and lighting is not an easy task.
