My UpStyled Christmas Stockings

I have an admitted Christmas Stocking addiction.  Every year at Christmas (and at after Christmas sales) as I walk the aisles of my favorite stores, the Christmas stockings call my name.

Inspiration for the Holidays

Hi there and Happy Saturday
I haven’t had any time this week to pull together links for my Weekend Reads post because I’ve been busy holiday decorating for clients.  So instead I thought I share with you a few images of what me and my elves have been up to.
You may have seen this Thanksgiving centerpiece that I created for a client on instagram.   For Thanksgiving we were going for lots of layers, texture and depth….

IMG_7135 copy

After their big Thanksgiving dinner, I went back and simplified the centerpiece for a more intimate Christmas party they are having.
IMG_7142 copy
I used a lot of the same floral stems and added ornaments, berry clusters and sparkly copper ribbon pieces.  The silver tray will hold a grouping of copper candles.
IMG_7330 copy
I’m participating in the Oh, hello friend Holiday Advent Swap and created these festive gift bags to hold the items I’m sending my swap partner Taylor.  The decorative pennant papers you see on the outside of each bag is actually a gift tag I incorporated into the design.  Taylor can pull these tags off and use them in the future for gift giving.
IMG_7284 copy
This is a part of a staircase garland I created for a client.  I love the look of the mixed greens and the oversized bow and ornament cluster.
IMG_7169 copy
This beautiful mantle garland mixes faux greens with magnolia leave and wide plaid ribbon.  My client is hosting 4 holiday parties so I’ll be changing out the magnolia leaves often to keep the look fresh.
IMG_7067 copy
Here’s a look at another home I decorated.  The color scheme is a mix of gold, copper, bronze and wine.  And of course a little animal print thrown into the mix.
IMG_7061 copy
Up close detail of the tree…we used different ribbons to create bows around the tree which helps to punch up the design.
IMG_7092 copy
And one of my elves decked out this chandelier with a bevy of beautiful ornaments.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks but there’s still more decorating to do.  Plus I’ve got to finish the décor at my homestead.
I’ll be back next week with lots of holiday diy projects and a look at my holiday décor.
Until then,
Merry, Merry!

Inspiration Comes in Many Forms–A look at an Atlanta Artist

I am constantly amazed at the talent that some people posses.  Those people who the can find creativity in the most unusual places and turn totally functional and mundane items into amazing works of art. Have you ever looked at a dryer duct in the hardware store and thought to yourself, I can turn that into something magnificent?  What about gutter guards?  Have those ever been on your DIY project supply list?

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Jessica, one of my blog readers and fellow Atlantan who just so happens to have the ability to look at dryer ducts and gutter guards and envision beautiful wall art and light fixtures.  From her creative vision comes amazing hand-crafted Signature Piecez.

Sig Pz - Bow - Red and Silver

These beautiful wall décor piece are crafted from dryer vent and are really dynamic on a wall.  I think the red or silver version would be a fun twist on a traditional Christmas wreath look.

Jessica makes a lot of commissioned pieces like this large art canvas which again is crafted from dryer vent.

Who knew gutter guards could be so chic?!

Decorating with Fur

It’s become a ritual.
Whenever I go to Ikea I start at the front of the store and snake my way through each of the departments only to find myself in the rug department “petting” the sheepskin rug they sell.
You know the rug, the white fluffy one that makes you want to just snuggle with it like you were a 5-year-old.
I can’t help myself.
I’ve picked up that rug so many times and asked myself the question that runs through my head at least 127 times a day, “what could I do with this?”
I know one, maybe two of those rugs are meant to be in my life so I had to go hunting for some design inspiration to help me figure out how me and this rug could live in harmony together.
If you’ve ever picked up this rug and asked the ‘what would I do’ question, here’s your answer…

Inspiring Words from Sarah Richardson

The other day I attended a design presentation at ADAC Atlanta given by Sarah Richardson, a designer that is at the top of my design idol list.  Sarah is the talented Canadian designer behind the popular HGTV shows Design Inc. Sarah 101 and Sarah’s House.  In addition to designing fabulous rooms on her shows, Sarah shares the ins and outs of the design business and gives design advice that any homeowner can put to use. All this, along with Sarah’s charming personality are the reasons I admire her so much.
Seeing Sarah in person was pure joy and hearing her words of inspiration on building and growing a business was icing on the cake.

Before Sarah got started with her presentation she let us know that Tommy, her adorable sidekick was home sick in bed.  She asked us all to wave and say hi as she took a video to send to him.
Once the presentation began, Sarah shared how she got started in the design business,  showed images of her work and gave all the designers in the room some really simple but great design advice.
Here are the things that stuck out in my mind.

Every designer should define, understand and CREATE A SIGNATURE STYLE for themselves and KNOW YOUR BRAND.  Knowing this will not only help you be a better designer, but it will help your clients understand who you are and how you approach business.
I also loved Sarah’s design philosophy…”Create rooms tailored to your clients and their interpretation of what home means to them.”
2010-0322%20SARAH%202810
Another aspect that she spoke about that both designers and homeowners need to tap into is their INSPIRATION.  Knowing what inspires you as a designer or someone who is decorating a home will help you create a space that is right for you.  Sarah spoke about the things that inspire her…pattern mixing, color, rooms that have both a feminine and masculine point of view and mixing old with new.
2010-0315%20SARAH%202269
Sarah has been designing for quite a few years and one of the things she really focuses on beyond the work is BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS.  Building relationships with your clients, support team, painters, contractors and anyone you work with is key to developing and maintaining a successful business. She fully acknowledged that her business is a team effort and not a solo one.   I couldn’t agree more!
 2010-0604%20SARAH%207843
And the final inspiration point that stood out to me was this…every designer should HAVE A POINT OF VIEW & UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE. To help with this process Sarah divides her work in to 4 key looks that form the starting point of every space she designs:
SHORE–Coastal colors, a soft palette, a relaxed vibe
BOULEVARD–City chic, refined color palette
SIDEWALK–Family friendly interiors, light-hearted, youthful
FARM HOUSE–Rich color palettes, warm, antiques

After the presentation we headed to the Kravet showroom where Sarah’s new line of fabrics were on display. I can’t begin to tell you how beautiful her collection is.
Each color grouping has the perfect mix of solids, textures, pattern scales and the looks can be mixed and matched in so many ways.
IMG_3638
This is my favorite collection and the floral below is my favorite pattern.
IMG_3644
IMG_3639
If you’ve ever watched one of Sarah’s show you’ll recognize that these patterns are definitely her signature style…classic with a vintage feel.
IMG_3640
IMG_3641
Sarah loves blue color palettes which are heavily represented in her collection.
IMG_3642
IMG_3643
The fabric line is launching as we speak and you can already find many of the styles at Forsyth Fabric here in Atlanta or online at House of Fabric.
Oh, I forgot to tell you that Sarah also mentioned she is working on a book.  It’s in the early stages so there is no release date yet but I can’t wait to add her book to my design library.
Everyday I look to be inspired by something or someone and spending the afternoon with Sarah was inspiring beyond words.

How to make your SunPorch an Extension of Your Home

Being that I’m from Washington State, the concept of a sun porch was a bit foreign to me until I moved to Atlanta.  In the south a sun porch is as much a staple as sweet tea is. Back in the day when a sun porch was decorated with furniture, it was considered a dressed-up patio.  Today sun porches are being used in a different way, are considered an extra room in the home and people are taking a more serious approach to how they decorate this space.

While I still love a sun porch that has the feel of an outdoor space, my favorite sun porch rooms are those that are decorated as an extension of the home, both in décor and in usefulness.

If you’re lucky enough to have a sun porch and are struggling with how to make the space relate to the rest of your home, I’ve outlined a few tips that will help you out.

Slide1

DECORATE WITH THE SAME STYLE OF FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES YOU WOULD IN ANY INTERIOR ROOM OF YOUR HOME

Using indoor furniture on a sun porch is the easiest way to relate the space to the rest of the home. Upholstered furniture pieces will add softness, rugs will help define the space and add warmth, and lamps and accessories will add personality and create a true room environment.

8420ec9f3023c35b490861d3ca9d0511

Use decorative pillows to make the space feel cozy and add visual interest.  Pillows instantly turn a sun porch into a relaxing living space.

8722279b52026136a0e9f19bd71c283d

Don’t shy away from dramatic paint colors on your sun porch.  Rich colors will help the space feel warm while light colors will help play up the natural light and openness that most sun porches have.

69155a755adad75d50ac670d798d958e

Framed artwork will enhance the walls and add visual depth along with personalizing the space.

 7ae89404d26fc3ba7fae258f85020316

The all-white sun porch above is really refreshing but if you live in a cold climate the space will feel extra cool just because of the lack of color. The addition of a few throw blankets and greenery would add energy and warmth to this room.

If you love white, mix in some darker pieces to help ground the room and create that sense of warmth.

HANG WINDOW TREATMENTS TO CREATE LAYERS AND SOFTNESS

4c15f8a96fcb739b239c43d666cdef61

Using an abundance of textiles on your sun porch is one of the best ways to make the space feel like any other room in your home.  Window treatments can add pattern and softness and woven blinds help to define the windows and add textural interest.

CREATE AN INVITING FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE SCENERY

b951d3a49b5608db84d8fe91b2441e48

Most sun porches are built with lots of windows to capture the view outdoors.  When creating a seating arrangement on your porch, use the scenery as the focal point and work your furniture arrangement around that.  The use of multiple tables and chairs will give your sun porch a living room feel.

cfc810348023741f7f155f18b2cf3078

I love that this porch uses color as a way to play up the windows instead of curtains.  The color draws your eye outside while still adding visual interest indoors.

a94fe4b829f7b63c102216773a7ca3eb

This is a great furniture layout for this narrow sun porch.  When the doors or windows are opened, the space becomes an indoor/outdoor space which enhances it function.

ESTABLISH A DEFINED PURPOSE FOR YOUR SUN PORCH

8c1e14900bd2e26e7313453a42bf3fd1

Other than a general sitting area, decorate your sun porch so that it has a specific use like a dining space, home office or reading room.  Creating a space with a particular function in mind will make the room feel more apart of the home.

brick floor for kitchen and utility room, love the pattern, but would like it to be cleaner, smoother.

86bbaa13957c35cb2dd4b667db0ac49f

Although framed in brick, the use of a rug, curtains and a chandelier help to make this dining space feel like a ‘real’ room and not a porch.

HANG A CHANDELIER FOR AMBIENCE AND STYLE

Hanging a chandelier on your sun porch will add impact and make the space feel more homey.

ACCENT THE CEILING WITH PAINT, WALLPAPER OR A DECORATIVE ACCENT

680dc4322658a4a0ba69421a33cc23ac

Just like an indoor room, a ceiling treatment on your sun porch is a great way to help create warmth and define the space. Coffered ceilings can add architectural interest and make the space feel more like an interior room.

185660aee224984e0d162f0f8503ac13

Dark ceilings will make the space feel warmer and more intimate.

817c79d5f3e6e97ea30660d2f21abdc3

60742cea4c210fb9fed4e64021d8ccd1

When all said and done, the best way to make your sun porch feel like an extension of your home is to approach it with the same design principles you would your family room or living room.  Create a space that you can live in year round and one that offers you the same comfort and sense of home as the rest of your house.

Decorating with Trophy Urns

When you go to flea markets and thrift stores, do you have items that you are always on the hunt for?  I surely do and one of those treasured pieces is a vintage trophy urn.

7c1a39404bce2730bff5291ce380ae48

Back in the day, trophy urns were given as the prize to the winner of a competition.  The names of the winners were often engraved on the urn and the urn was passed from winner to winner.  At some point in history, trophy urns were also put into use as a champagne cooler.  Today, trophy urns offer much decorating versatility which is why I search them out.

Here’s a look a different ways you could use Trophy Urns in your home for fall.  Be inspired!

Slide1

Slide2

Most often you will find trophy urns in silver-plate or brass finishes which look great against the leaves of a plant or mini shrub that offers an easy filler.

Slide3

For a more casual, rustic look, branches look great in an urn.  I use to look for trophy urns without wear and pitting but I’ve come to love those that show age and wear.

Slide4

Trophy urns are a great way to add a little sparkle and shine to your kitchen counters as a utensil holder. This piece looks great on the kitchen counter of Kim over at  Savvy Southern Style.

Slide5

I love the idea of using an urn as a pedestal for books.

Slide6

And nothing is more fitting for fall then an urn filled with a beautiful fall arrangement or even a pot of mums.Slide7

And for a stylish take on Halloween, plop a white pumpkin atop your urn and surround it with cascading greenery.

Do you have a trophy urn in your home and if so, how to you use yours?
