The Makings of a Beautiful Nightstand

Nightstands are a key part in every bedroom, anchoring the bed and giving the entire space form,  function and style!

Here’s what it takes to make your nightstand, stand out…

  • The Nightstand Itself–whenever possible, avoid a matching piece to your bed/headboard.  A unique nightstand will give new life to a simple headboard/bed.  Try a piece of antique furniture, a small writing desk, a cabinet with drawers, a skirted round table or even stacked luggage pieces.  Do something unexpected!

  • The Lighting–choose a lamp that will provide good reading light and one that adds some style and personality to the space.  Ceramic base lamps are great for bedrooms as are crystal or glass lamps.  And, if your nightstand is too small to hold a tabletop lamp, think about hanging a pendant overhead.  Trey Chic!

  • The AccessoriesI don’t know about you, but I love to have a stash of special treasures on my nightstand…
Books/iPad–for late night reading or early morning blog browsing
Scented Candle–lighting a candle an hour or so before you go to bed will help you sleep better and have sweet dreams
Bedside Clockforgo the glow-in-the-dark electronic version and add a stylish chrome or brass clock next to your bed
Flowers–real or faux, flowers will add a sense of opulence to your bedroom.
Photos–a photo of my husband and I sits on my nightstand…a great reminder as I fall to sleep of what matters most.

And, for those of you that like a cleaner look on your nightstand, use decorative boxes or baskets to hold everything.
  • The Surround–decorating your nightstand does not just stop at what you put on top of your nightstand. Creating a dynamic look for your nightstand also includes what surrounds it.  I love hanging a grouping of framed art on the wall above the nightstand, or a decorative mirror.  Both elements will add impact around your nightstand.

Are You Living an Opulent Life?

Several years ago I was introduced to Joyce Rennolds, Motivator of One or a Thousand, and my life was enriched beyond measure.

Joyce is a motivational speaker and life coach who moves you to not only envision the life you’ve always wanted, but to make that life a reality.

The hubby and I attend Joyce’s weekly motivational class, not only because she inspires us, but because we’ve come to love and value Joyce and her friendship.

During class this week, Joyce talked about living an opulent life.  Not a life of excess or over-abundance, but a life filled with little things and memorable experiences that allow you to bask in opulence and enjoy life to the fullest

It could be as simple as going to dinner at a fine restaurant that you’ve always wanted to visit, or indulging in a spa treatment, just because.  Or, it might be dressing up in fancy duds and attending a play!

Joyce’s talk on living an opulent life got me thinking about opulence as it relates to our home and decor.

I’ve been in a lot of homes, from million dollar homes to 800 sq. foot apartments.  While a more expensive home is bound to have finer finishes and more expensive details than an apartment, those things are not what gives a home its true opulence.  True opulence comes from the personalized elements we decorate our homes with, and the little details we add that make the space special, comfortable, beautiful and our haven.

Bits of Inspriation: Utah Parade of Homes

I love walking through show houses and adding design ideas to my file.  Even if  I can’t see the show houses in person, it’s great to be able to see photos via the web.  Here’s a bit of design inspiration from the recent Utah County Parade of Homes.

I love the soft, muted color story used in this room.  Using two different fabrics on side by side chairs adds personality to the room.

One of my favorite looks is a desk placed behind a sofa.

The mix of textures used in this room give it lots of interest.

Love this left and right chair set because it is so functional…together or apart!

My friend Martha (aka, the chair lady)  and I saw a set in a thrift store recently and passed them by.  Martha, if you’re reading this, I think the set belongs in the sitting area of your kitchen.

The touches of teal give this kitchen depth without over-powering it.  The backsplash is fabulous and so are the upholstered stools.

A fun kitchen nook made even cuter with a mix of chair styles.

A stylish home office.

Love, love, love this bedroom.  The soft teal and pop of yellow are so refreshing.

The perfect patterned pillow mix!

A stylish way to keep the household organized.

Bold colored pillows are always fun.  And that wood trunk with upholstered linen top is awesome.

Angled furniture often doesn’t work, but it does in this space.

What is it about bunk beds that’s makes them so charming?  I love the red, black and white color theme and the mix of patterns.

Just fun!

Creative spaces do need to be creative after all.

Most of the time it’s the little things that make a home feel special.

Hope you enjoyed the view from Utah!

Updating The Look Of Your Home

Over the years, many people who I’ve done design work for have asked about ways to update or transform the decor of their home, without knocking down walls, throwing everything out or spending a lot of money.

So today, I thought I’d share 20 Design Ideas to Transform the Look of Your Home, quick and cost-effectively!  Many of these ideas you’ve probably heard before, but they are proven and are all quick and easy ways to update the look of your home .

UPDATE YOUR HOME ON THE CHEAP AND IN A HURRY!

  • Replace your wood coffee table with an oversized ottoman. The main living spaces of our homes are often filled with an abundance of wood furniture, and the addition of a soft structure like a fabric ottoman can give the space a new, relaxed vibe.  If your’ coffee table is old and you are open to a DIY project, here’s a great tutorial on turning your wood coffee table into an ottoman from Jenny at Little Green Notebook.

  • Place shades on your chandelier.  The addition of shades can turn a plain chandelier into something spectacular.

  • Mix solid pillows with patterned ones on your sofa.  The combination of solids and patterns adds style and personality to your furnishings.  It’s also a great way to bring texture into the room.

  • Add thin candlestick lamps to your mantel instead of traditional candle holders.  If you don’t have an outlet on the mantel, have one put in…it’s worth the money.  What a stunning effect.

  • Decorate with flowers–this is a sure-fire way to personalize your home and make it feel inviting and comfortable.

  • Become and collector and show it off.  Collections are a great way to showcase your personality, add color and create an impact.

  • Create a gallery wall of art.  As the saying goes, the more the merrier!  A great way to add impact and visual interest to a space.  Pick up different style frames from your local thrift shop and unify them with a coat of paint.

  • Fill the space below a console table with small ottomans, a plant or baskets.  Filling this void will make your room feel more layered and luxurious.

  • Add mirrors.  Mirrors are a fantastic way to add light and energy to a space.  Place them to reflect beautiful architectural elements, use them to make a small space appear bigger or simply create a focal point with mirrors.

  • Decorate with Books.  Just about any table surface in your home will feel more relaxed and personal with the addition of books.  Remove the book jackets for a cleaner look.

And finally,

  • Hide countertop appliances in the kitchen behind artwork placed on an easel or inside decorative boxes!
  • Replace basic incandescent light bulbs with Philips Iridescent DuraMax Long Life light bulbs.  This light bulb provides full color spectrum rendering which will enhance all the colors in a room.
  • Use the things you have in new ways–move things around and give them and new reason for being!

Hope you’re inspired to give your home a new look this summer!

If you’ve been crazing a bit more space in your home, take some inspiration from these photos and you just might see the place in a whole new light.

Have a splendid weekend!

We All Go Through Changes

I am working on a new project, where the homeowners are downsizing into a slightly smaller home, and as part of the move, they’ve decided to completely change the style of their decor.

They are moving from a traditional, formal look with rich colors and tones, to a contemporary, sleek, mostly white decor.  While most people make several style changes during their lifespan, this design change is a big one.

In helping Richard and Henry create the look that they want, I developed a series of concept boards so they could envision their new space. Here’s a peek at a few before photos and inspiration boards, along with some of the design advice I shared with them.

Living Room:  The living room will be all white, with accents of red (a favorite color of the family).  We’ll downplay the wood floors with area rugs and add accessories that give the space personality.

  • In room with a narrow color palette, the finishes and textures you into that space become a critical part of the design.  Make sure every element has a reason for being and that the textures make a statement.
  • When selecting a white paint color for your walls, you MUST sample them first.  White is one of the trickiest colors to work with and can have a variety of undertones that pop out in different light.  Sampling the paint color and viewing it different times of day will help you choose the perfect one for your home and space.
  • Texture will give the space depth and interest, without interfering with the color statement, so it’s important to incorporate it into your design plan.  The best options for adding texture are wall decor, textiles, lighting and accessories.
  • Using a range of paint finishes will provide visual interest and give the wall surfaces more dimension.  We decided to use Sherwin Williams Snowbound (SW7004) on the walls, in an eggshell finish and again on all the trim work, but in a high-gloss finish.  The different finsihes will visually define the walls.

The Kitchen:  In the kitchen I recommended that the cabinets be painted grey, still providing a cool, contemporary feel while giving the space a bit more depth.

  • Contemporary style kitchens work best when the overall look is simple and clean, allowing the finishes, hardware and details to be hero.  I recommended chrome and shiny silver hardware for that visual pop.

The Bedroom:  Wanting their bedroom space to feel totally calming and relaxed, I selected a light grey color for the walls. The headboard will be upholstered in white and the linens will all be white.  We opted for grey faux silk curtain panels in the same tone as the wall to provide texture but keep the space serene.

To give a bedroom real style, pay attention to the details and make them count.  My homeowners wanted major bling to show up in the bedroom so we are doing a silver-leaf treatment on the tray ceiling and adding a stunning crystal chandelier.  Additional style will be added with mirrored night stands, decorative pillows and a white drawer console.

  • Bedrooms are where texture can really make the space come to life.  Texture pillows, rug and the chandelier will give the space interest.
  • Layering is also important in a bedroom–layer your linens and layer your accessories to give the space character and dimension

The Master Bathroom:  Playing off the grey that is being used in the master bedroom, and wanting to make sure the bathroom has its own distinct style, we opted to change the design of the shower, the countertops, hardware and finishes.

  • To create drama in a bathroom, use materials that have alot of character–small glass tiles are a great option for a shower stall and provide an artist quality as well as added dimension
  • Be bold with your hardware and lighting and mirror choices–these are elements that add alot of personality to a bathroom
  • Keep your window treatments simple and classic–roman shades are a great option for bathroom windows

The Home Office:  We are taking an upstairs loft area and turning it into a home office.  A wall will be added with french doors to close off the space.

  • Office areas need to function well and look good in the process.  Make sure you don’t skimp of storage and organization elements because without these, the space will not work well or feel good.
  • Use bookcases to add style to a home office.  Large wall units will give you storage and display space.

And last but not least, we’ll be adding personality pieces to make this home a reflection of the owners.

Whether you’re content with your design style or in the process of changing things up a bit, make sure to add elements that are a reflection of you and your personality.

I’ll be sure to share the finished spaces when we’re all done.
