The Nate Berkus Fall 2016 Collection

Nate Berkus Fall 2016 Collection for Target

Every season, Nate Berkus develops his product line for Target and every season it gets better and better.  His fall collection is filled with texture, chic design details and metallic elements. And I am truly astonished at the affordable price points.

As I looked through the collection on the website, it was hard to narrow down my top picks. I did and came away with a list of 12 items that will elevate the style of any home in a flash.

The Nate Berkus Collection For Target–Fall 2016

No. 1–There is so much to love about the Screen Door Nightstand, from the door detail to the brass handles.  Its easy to envision it next to a bed but I could also see it used for storage in a home office or even in a bathroom.

No. 2–I’ve been looking for a small console table for a client and this Brass and Gold Console Table might be it.  The size is perfect for a small hallway, next to the front door or in a guest bedroom.  I can also envision this table with small stools nested underneath it.

No. 3–This Marble and Gold Console Table is a great option for a small wall space between windows or on a stair landing.  I’d also consider using a pair flanking a bed with wall mounted sconces above them.

No. 4–If you’ve  shopped for small side tables you know how hard they can be to find.  The Brass and Hexagon End Table is ideal next to an upholstered chair or sofa to hold a cocktail.

No. 5–Rattan stools are a classic design piece and I love the two-tone detail on this Rattan Stool.  I’d place a pair in front of a fireplace for additional seating or use them as side tables in a sunroom.

No. 6–The Equestrian Side Table might be my favorite piece in the entire collection.  I love the idea of a pair used as a coffee table alternative or one or two under a console table in a foyer.

No. 7–This Braided Woven Storage Basket is just begging for a couple of throw blankets or a lush plant.  Or you could use it in a kids play space to hold toys.

No. 8–I’m a sucker for pretty bowls and this Faceted Mini Bowl is perfect for snacks or used to hold jewelry and trinkets in a bedroom.

No. 9–You can’t beat the elegant style or the $19.99 price of this Gold Mirror vanity mirror.

No. 10–I’ve talked about my love for letter organizers here on the blog before.  This Gold Hammered Letter Sorter is great because the scale will hold letters, file folders or magazines.

No. 11–The black and gold color combo plus the price of this Brass and Gold Coffee Table made it an obvious choice for my list.  Just imagine this in a reading/lounge area flanked by four upholstered slipper chairs.

No. 12–Black and white is a hot design trend for bathrooms so this chic Graphic Bath Rug is right on target. I think it would look fabulous in this bathroom.

After I checked out the collection online, I visited my local store to check them out in person. Everything looks great and the furniture pieces are well-built for the price.

p.s.  as I was writing this, I noticed that many of the items in the collection are on SALE.  You’ll want to act fast if you see anything you like.

Nate Berkus Fabrics at JoAnn

I love that so many top designers are partnering with big box retail stores and making their product accessible to the masses.  Nate Berkus has definitely hit a home run with his home decor line at Target and now a selection of custom fabric designs are available at JoAnn Fabric.

Like most of Nate’s products, the patterns in the Nate Berkus fabric line available at JoAnn’s have a fresh and modern feel and come in classic colors.

There are 20 pattern/color options and the prices range from $9.99 to $27.99 per yard.

After taking a look at the fabric line, I got to thinking about how I’d use my favorite styles.  Here’s the inspiration that Nate inspired…

Slide1

I’m a big fan of yellow when it comes to decorating and this Ameil Dot Paramount pattern in citrus is just begging to go on a pair of stylish X benches.  I envision them at the foot of a bed or placed under a white console table in a foyer.

Slide2

I love fabric headboards but I’m ready to see less solid colored linen and more patternwork.  The ethnic modern feel of the Linea Paramount pattern would be a fun way to dress up a softly shaped headboard.

Slide3

Bold prints are one of my favorite decor statements and the colors and design of this Timur Sussex in Ginger is a statement pattern.  I can see a pair of tufted chairs in this fabric, paired with a stately leather sofa and sisal rug.  Oh, I’d add in a couple of brass end tables for that something shiny that I think every room needs.

Slide4

Close your eyes and imagine this curved back arm lounge chair upholstered in this seastone colorway of the Dari Mosaic Paramount fabric.  Prop your feet up on an ottoman and you’ll have a perfect spot to relax and rewind.

Slide5

This Indre Lynwood pattern is one of my favorites in the entire line and I’d love to upholster a classic bench with bolster pillows in this ginger color.  This pattern is also available in navy and dove grey which make it versatile enough for just about anything you can imagine.

While I’m on the subject of Nate, have you checked out his new collection at Target?  The pillows in this collection are on the top of my list…

Trend Alert: Tortoise Shells

Ever since Nate Berkus introduced that tortoise shell wall decor piece in his line for Target and it sold out in a flash, tortoise shells have been a hot design accent.  I love the eclectic feel they add to a room and that they can be hung on a wall or used on a table surface. In most cases it is illegal to capture and acquire a real tortoise so almost all of what you see on for sale on the internet is faux which is OK in my book.

Is tortoise shell decor on your hit or miss list?  I’m crossing my fingers that Nate will bring them back for another run!

American Dream Builders–The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

2014-0129-AmericanDreamBuilders-Show-KeyArt-1920x1080-UG

Hello there. So I’m going to get right to it. Have you all been watching Nate Berkus’ new show American Dream Builders? I have and boy has that show got me up in arms.

THE GOOD

The show itself has a good format and I love seeing designers in all different areas of design working together.

I’ve gained a new appreciation for landscape design from watching the show. It’s amazing how creative you can get with concrete and grass.

I think the judging panel of Nate, Monica and Eddie makes a great team and provides great design tips and realistic feedback on the designs.

I am getting lots of design inspiration from the beautiful spaces created on the show.

See Team Red in action this week.

I love the idea of using tile just on one wall in a kitchen.  This is a great way to create a focal point in the space and the larger tiles make for a dramatic statement. And a table as an island substitute is one of my favorite design looks.

This outdoor area is a great example of how different textures can make a space come alive.  All of the best principles of design were used in this space…scale, variation, balance, depth and dimension.

See Team Blue in action this week.

This is one of my favorite bedrooms designs thus far on the show.  The fabric treatment is such a simple and dramatic touch and a very easy diy project that anyone can handle.

Here’s a great example of how to mix brights into a neutral space.  The accent colors are repeated in several areas which makes the color feel natural versus forced.

There are so many great things about this space.  I love the tile on the fireplace, the mix of textures and finishes and the unexpected chandelier.  Paying attention to the design details really pays off.

THE BAD

Despite the talent of the designers that make up this show, it’s been interesting to see how even they can make rookie mistakes.

See Team Red in action this week.

First, this room to me lacks a point of view.   And then there are too many contrasting design elements and too many linear details (lines of light fixture, lines on the chairs, lines on the artwork).  Plus I think the overall scale of this space is off.

See Team Red in action this week.

While this isn’t bad design I do think the space missed the mark when it comes to functionality for the couple that live there.  This couple likes to entertain and the limited seating and small-scale furniture does not support that in my  book.

For someone who loves pillows, even I thought this was overkill.  One of the best things you can do when designing a space is to edit after it’s done.  Bad design cannot be covered up by a bunch of pillows.

This bathroom has to win the prize for the worst space so far.  The idea of repurposing a piece found in the garage was good but this goes to show you that one badly executed design element can turn even the best space into an eyesore.

THE UGLY

Ok, how many of you guessed I was going to be talking about Elaine when it got to the UGLY part of this post?  After watching last nights episode, it was pretty obvious to me that the ratings game came into play with keeping her on the show.  For some strange reason bad TV makes money.

Her tactics of belittling people, bad mouthing and disrespecting people is so awful.  Her stunt last night of killing Christina’s plan for the kitchen should have gotten her kicked off the show.  The kitchen was the least ‘designed’ space in the house and it was because of her.

She obviously lacks some self-love if she feels the need to always make herself look better than everyone else.

Last night on twitter and on the ADB blog, Elaine was getting bashed pretty bad.  People, me included, are not connecting with her disruptive attitude and verbal abuse of others.  But maybe there’s hope because Elaine posted this on twitter, in response to a comment from Nate Berkus…

Honey, THAT BUILD truly left me a changed person!!!! I had 2 go home & ask myself A LOT of questions about EVERYTHING

We can only hope.

I’m looking forward to next Sundays’ show, not only for the design inspiration but to see if Elaine really has changed!

To see photos of all the ADB designed space and to read the ADB blog head here.

If you’ve been watching the show, what are your thoughts?

What I’ve Learned from Nate about design and about life

ED0710_Berkus_007

Have you ever been asked the question “what famous person would you like to have dinner with?”  I have and my list of names includes a handful of people, one of which has inspired me in design and in life.

The first person on my list, Oprah, needs no explanation and I am grateful to her for giving the second person on my list the design opportunity of his life and making me aware of him.
