What To Buy During The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale

Nordstrom

I might have mentioned this before but when I lived in Seattle it wasn’t uncommon for me to take the first day of the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale off from work.  Given that Nordstrom is based in Seattle, their half-yearly sales are a major deal in that city.   I’ve always loved the Nordstrom sale because it’s a great time to pick up a few in-season pieces and save money while you’re at it.

I spent a little time checking our the deals online and rounded up a few of my faves.

Let’s go shopping shall we…

Espadrilles are the ‘it’ shoe for spring and summer and this black and white platform espadrille is the perfect blend of summer style and comfort.  And the $40 price tag makes it even more attractive.

If I could buy an unlimited number of any one fashion accessory, it would be handbags.  A classic leather handbag should be a part of every girls wardrobe and having one in a fashion color like this beautiful orchid is perfect for spring or summer.  I love the woven handle and all the interior pockets of this Elliott Lucca leather tote.

I love sporting a white watch during summer and since the cheapo one I bought at the mart has seen its last day, I’m going to invest in a new one.  This Nixon patent leather strap watch is the front runner on my consideration list.  I love the round crystal face, the gold rim and hands and the $74.90 pricepoint.

If you love jewelry, you’ll definitely want to get in on one of these deals.  This turquoise stone pendant necklace is only $8.98 and is perfect to wear with summer dresses, tanks and tees.  This Drusy pendant necklace is a bit dressier but would work just as well with a casual outfit and it’s only $13.98.

If you’re planning on doing any traveling this summer or if you like to spend your weekends antique shopping like me, this belt bag is for you.  When it comes to style, fanny packs have come a long way and this striped canvas belt bag is both cute and afforable.

Summers are meant for maxi dresses and Nordstrom has a ton of great styles on sale under $100.  Here are three of my favorite-navy and white maxi for everyday wear, a floral maxi for when you need something a bit dressier and this roll-sleeve maxi when you want to look super chic but casual.

Don’t dilly dally, because the Nordsrom Half-Yearly Sale ends May 31st.  Happy shopping!

FOUR Steps To Picking The Right Paint Color

Slide1

Painting rooms is not my favorite thing to do.  Usually I come up with the plan, help tape off and then when my husband starts rolling the paint I sneak out the room to do other stuff.    My vanishing act has been happening for years and it works for both the hubby and I.

I know many of you have painting on your to-do list for the long weekend so I wanted to share a few tips to help you avoid picking the wrong paint color.  These are the same tips I share with my design clients so know that they have stood the test of time.

Inspiring Work Spaces, Style Details and Organizing Ideas

via My Domaine

I love a beautiful office space like the one above from House of Harper.  A space doesn’t have to be big or super fancy to grab my attention, it just has to be efficient and filled with stylish organization and lots of personality.

I have an entire pinterest board dedicated to office, craft and hobby rooms with over 500 images of some of the most beautiful and creative work spaces ever.  The common thread within all of the spaces I admire are the style details and organizing ideas.

Shopping Atlanta: Desparate Housewares

I’ve lived in Atlanta for 15 years and just when I think I’ve discovered every vintage shop in the city I stumble across a new one.

Desparate Housewares Storefront

A couple of weeks ago while the hubby and I were out driving I spotted a parking lot filled with outdoor furniture.  The building looked like it was old and I had a feeling what was inside the building was vintage.  I directed my driver to pull into the lot and a large sign reading Desperate Housewares greeted us.   I could tell immediately that this little shop was a gem.

desperate-housewares-17a

Desperate Housewares is quaint little shop which sells vintage, retro and contemporary decor and furniture, antiques, collectibles and of course housewares. In addition to retail sales, the shop also rents pieces for tv shows, films and prop use.

IMG_8715

Walking through the store is like walking through a museum dedicated to retro and industrial design.  There were lots of industrial office chairs, typewriters and misc. accessories.  The collection of retro furniture is one of the best I’ve seen.  Since I don’t shop retro often I found many of the prices on the larger items to be a bit high, but they are probably in line with the quality and age of the pieces.

This bench was amazing with a chunky brass base and I even liked the Chartreuse colored fabric.

IMG_8714

I spotted this pair of cool retro bar stools that were in min condition.

Desparate Housewares

If you love old chairs, Desperate Housewares had a great selection that could be totally transformed with a new upholstery job and paint.

If you’ve got vintage flamingos on your shopping list you’ll find some of those at this store too!

IMG_8708

I love horses and this antique horse tricycle was just stunning but way out of my price range.

IMG_8706

I considered purchasing a pair of these bamboo framed mirrors but left them for someone else.

IMG_8707

The shop has a large selection of vintage oil paintings at good prices and with really nice chunky frames.

IMG_8711

And their collection of vintage luggage and train cases is amazing.  My mom had one of these vintage Train Cases and I loved it as a kid.

Desperate Housewares has lots of vintage accent furniture and this bamboo piece grabbed my attention.  It would make a great nightstand.

IMG_8694

And if you have a thing for lamps like I do, you will be in heaven in this shop. There were shelves upon shelves of vintage ceramic and metal styles.

While my personal design style is not retro, I definitely saw lots of pieces in this shop that could easily mix well with other styles.

Product + Inspiration: Hemnes Shoe Cabinet

Slide2

When it comes to furniture functionality and chic diy transformations the Hemnes Shoe Cabinet is probably one of my favorite Ikea hack pieces. The slim size of this piece make it ideal for narrow closets or hallways and the piece can be used for much more than shoe storage.

You can create a compact mud room next to the front door and use the top drawer to hold keys, chargers, batteries and other daily essentials.

Ikea Hemnes Shoe Cabinete

Ikea sells several styles of shoe cabinets including this  4 drawer version.

O’verlays has created a collection of designer overlays to fit the Hemnes cabinets which is another easy way to get a designer look in a flash.

I love the look of two shoe cabinets placed side by side to function as a console cabinet.

Most of the shoe cabinets are available in black-brown and white or a wood grain finish.

The shoe cabinet can also work to hold cold weather accessories, files, cords or lightweight books.

The 3-drawer Brissa shoe cabinet is a great buy at $39.99 and looks great customized with a wood frame and brass cup pulls.

Fashion Focus: Building A Classic Earring Wardrobe

One-Earring-Only

I love me some jewelry.  If I ever leave home without earrings on, I feel naked and jewelry is one of my favorite impulse purchases. (tip:  I always keep a pair of classic silver hoops in my wallet just in case)

My first buying job out of college was as an assistant buyer in the jewelry department for a department store in Seattle.  This was back in the day when  Monet was the ‘it’ fashion brand, Swatch watches were the style statement and it was trendy to only wear one earring like Janet Jackson did.  (I know I’m not the only one who wore a key as an earring:)

Times have changed and so have the styles of jewelry that are now considered basic wardrobe elements.  I thought it would be fun to take a look back at a few styles that made the 80’s great and what earring styles are considered an essential wardrobe staple today.

Spotted At HomeGoods for Spring

IMG_8518

It’s been a while since I’ve been to HomeGoods.  It usually takes them a good month + to restock their stores after Christmas so I usually wait until mid February or March to see what’s new for spring.  I’m fortunate that there are four HomeGoods within a 10-15 minute drive from my house. Having been to all of the store many times, I’ve learned which ones get the most stock and have the best inventory.

A couple of days ago I popped into two HomeGoods stores.  The first store was lean on merchandise but they did  one great piece that stopped me in my tracks.

This small acrylic table was just gorgeous and I imagined how great it would look as a side table, or bar cart.  I was surprised to see it in the store but at $99.00 I think the price stopped a lot of people in their tracks.  (update:  I posted this table on Instagram and like me it was a hit.  I went back to get the style number for someone and unfortunately it sold the evening that I saw it)

IMG_8489[1]

The other HomeGoods I went to is my favorite.  The shelves are usually filled to the max and they always have a great selection of furniture.  Here’s a look at what I spotted…

These marble top nesting tables were stunning.  I love the two-tone marble combined with the chrome base.  I’d pair these with a pair of leather chairs to create a stylish seating area.

IMG_8497

This rustic wood media console was well made and the wood tone was really nice.  This would be an easy piece to mix with modern or eclectic decor.

IMG_8498

The color of the year, Marsala is well represented in HomeGoods and I spotted it in this sleek desk/console table.  The gold x-legs and crystal knobs just add to the style of this piece.

IMG_8505

IMG_8506

There were lots of fret work pieces in the store.  I’ve seen this mirrored chest of drawers before and still love it.  It would make the perfect night stand.

IMG_8504

Finding oversized coffee table can be a challenge sometimes.  This wood beauty had great lines and a nice finish.  The glass top and bottom would add an airy feel to a living space.

IMG_8507

HomeGoods must be predicting this metal cross leg table a winner because there were about 6 of them in the store.  The height is ideal if someone is looking for a nightstand with minimal details.  I think it would also look great in a bathroom holding towels and personal care items.

IMG_8508

There were lots of small side tables to choose from in varying styles, shapes and finishes.

IMG_8509

This round brass and marble table was my favorite.

IMG_8510

IMG_8513

Spring is garden stool season at HomeGoods and they continue to bring in updated styles in great colors.  Blue is definitely a trending color for spring and they has several styles to choose from.

IMG_8516

I loved this green stool and really considered buying it.

IMG_8517

This orange table/stool was so cute and would make a fun accent table on a sun porch or in a kids room.

IMG_8515

There were lots of chairs in the store but this is the only one that really caught my attention.  I love the detail of plaid on the back.

IMG_8502

HomeGoods has been carrying more and more headboards and this twin headboard was a winner.  The orange piping was the perfect detail to dress up the neutral fabric.  How cute would this be paired with that orange stool above.

IMG_8503

If you’re in the market for an ottoman to put at the foot of the bed or use as a coffee table, now is the time to shop.  Most of the ottomans were storage ottoman too which gives you more bang for your buck.

IMG_8511

IMG_8512

The pillow shelves were overflowing.

IMG_8514 (2)

If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again…you can’t beat the lamps at HomeGoods.

The store I was in had a great selection of bold brass lamps

IMG_8499

and some really great decorative styles in ceramic and metal.  These striped lamps were killer!

IMG_8500

IMG_8501

And if you’ve gotta entertaining on the calendar for spring, be sure to check out the housewares section for beautiful plates, bowls and serving pieces like the lemon plate at the top.

So, have you spotted anything great at HomeGoods for spring? #homegoodshappy
