Shopping Ikea–New decor and fabrics!

Hello friends. I hope you all had a great weekend.

Since I hadn’t been shopping at IKEA in a while, I decided to stop by the store on Saturday to see what was new. Whenever I plan a trip to Ikea, I try to go early in the morning or an hour or so before they close because the crowds are usually at a low point during those times. Well, I must have missed the email announcement that Saturday night was ‘kids night’ because the store was packed with families and there were kids running around everywhere. What usually takes me an hour to get through the store took me a lot longer because I was constantly dogging little ones.

Despite the crowd and super long check-out lines, we made it out in one piece but did have to stop and get ice-cream on the way home to calm our nerves:)

Anyway, back to my shopping trip. I spotted several new items I wanted to share with you including some of the new fabrics Ikea is selling.

One of the first things I spotted were these glass jars. I love the cork tops and the simple shape. These would be great on a kitchen counter to hold snacks and staples and I can even see them being used as a terrarium or to hold seasonal decor like the photo below. If I remember correctly, the largest size was $24.00 and the medium was $14.99.

When I spotted these wood boxes I immediately thought of a thousand different ways to use them. And they are the perfect piece for a DIY project. Unfortunately the store was out of this size but did have a larger/longer size available. It think the price was $5.99.

Another great piece I saw was this woven side table. The top is a metal tray and it comes off to reveal storage space inside. I didn’t much care of the white stripe around the center but that could be fixed in a flash with spray paint or stain. Just image this in a bold, bright color for summer. $79.99

I loved this black planter and will probably go back and get one. The textured pattern on the outside is really nice and the inside is painted gold which you can see in the website photo below.

I never pass up the pillow aisle at Ikea and it never fails that they have something I want. This blue and cream striped pillow cover was really nice and I loved the watercolor effect the stripes had. Like most of the pillow covers, this one was a great deal at just $8.00.

Next up was the fabric department at Ikea. If you’ve never looked at the fabrics that Ikea sells, I suggest you do. Their fabric department is set up with a cut-it-yourself station so you cut the yardage you need and take it to the register to be rung up. You won’t find designer patterns or designer quality but many of the fabrics are great for decor like pillows, table linens or even drapes. And you can’t beat the price with most of the fabrics under $10 a year.

Berta Ruta–a classic red and white plaid $8.99/yd Also comes in other classic colors.
Emmie Ros–this is a vintage inspired floral design and would be great in with shabby chic decor–$6.99/yd.
Sofia–a classic black and white stripe for only $7.99/yd. I used this fabric to make a skirt for the file cabinet in my office and love the weight and quality of it. Also available in other colors.
Pilorf–I love, love, love the floral design on this fabric and think it would make a really pretty table runner because of the way the pattern runs. $5.99/yd.

Blue and white products are a big trend at Ikea and they have some great blue and white fabrics for sale. This Sommar pattern is modern and classic and is only $5.99/yd.
At first I didn’t know if I like this abstract foliage fabric and then I remembered that Sherry Hart used it to make pillows for one of her projects and I was sold. It’s a great design that in the right application can look high-end. $9.99/yd.
This Sommar blue and white grid pattern is another classic design they sell. I can envision this as drapes with a beautiful trim detail or made into a duvet cover. $5.99/yd
Classic black and white floral design with an antique washed look. $7.99/yd.

And another new item I spotted in the fabric department was a bundle of fabric swatches that were on sale for $4.99. Each swatch measures 8″ x 8″ and there are 50 pieces in the bundle, 10 each of 5 designs. I immediately thought of making dinner napkins from these or using them in craft projects. I might be going back to get these as well.

5 Decorative Items To Buy at Walmart!

I think a lot of people shop Walmart just for kitchen and beauty staples and have never recognized that they also carry some great decorative pieces too. If you take a look around the store you’ll not only notice stylish containers and dinnerware but there are some nice accent furniture and storage pieces as well.

Whenever I’m at Walmart I browse the aisles looking for what’s new and thought today would be a great day to share FIVE decor pieces I think are worth buying at Walmart.

The Heritage Jar has been one of my favorite jars for several years now. When I first spotted it at Walmart I think the price was $10 and even though the price has increased a bit to $16.29 it’s still a good value. The glass is thick and at a one gallon size the jar is one of the most functional and stylish way to store dry goods in the kitchen.

I love finding a good deal on lampshades and Walmart has a classic drum shades at a great price. This Better Homes and Garden Black Drum Shade is only $12.97 but has the look and details and higher priced shade. You can’t go wrong with this!

If you’re looking for an inexpensive storage ottoman, Walmart has a nice selection to choose from. This Kent Storage Ottoman is a great piece that pack a lot of style for just $168.17.

Finding a nice looking bookcase can be challenging. This BHG Crossmill Bookcase is a great piece and I love the weathered finish and the $199.88 price tag. It also comes in a version with lower cabinet doors for $109.00

When it comes to organizing, baskets and bins are an essential design element and I especially love bins that have some character and charm to them. Walmart sells lots of different basket and bin styles but at the top of my list is this Galvanized Bin. There are two sizes available ($7.47 and $12.44) which means you have a size to fit all your decorating and organizing needs.

Organizing Tips that Help Me Get Organized When Clutter Takes Over

Happy February!

I am typically a very organized person. But since packing up my Christmas and holiday décor I’ve struggled with keeping myself and my home organized. Being disorganized has left me feeling uneasy and scattered and because of that I am not working as efficiently as I can or should be. This week I’m setting aside some time in my schedule to get things around me organized and back on track. I’m going to be sorting, purging, consolidating and organizing each space that I’ve neglected.

To get the job done, I’m going to rely on the organizing habits I’ve used for years, tips that always work for me. I’d thought I’d share those tips with you today and come back later in the week and show the before and after of a some of the areas I’m organizing.

Organizing Tip #1–SORTING

The first step for me when I’m organizing is SORTING! When things are in a state of disorder it usually means piles and stacks. Sorting through the things you have will help you organize like items together, move items to the room and spaces they belong in and it will also help you decide what stays and what goes.

Organizing Tip #2–PURGING

PURGING something that you no longer need or that is no long useful to you is a great feeling. It takes discipline to sort through and get rid of items you once loved, but holding on to things that have gone unused for months or years is not doing you or your state of well-being any good. Letting go of unnecessary stuff will allow you to enjoy and appreciate those things that you keep and really use.

Organizing Tip #3–EVALUATE

Once you’ve sorted and purged its time to EVALUATE WHAT YOU HAVE. In my closets, kitchen and craft space I know that I function best when the items I use most often are organized in a way that makes accessing them quick and easy. Do a second sort of your items and put them into stacks labeled A, B, C and D. ‘A’ represents the things you use most and ‘D’ represents those things that are used less often. Now is also a good time to take a look at those items in the D pile and see if anything more needs to be purged. When it comes time to place things on shelves or racks, the things you use most will be front and forward.

Organizing Tip #4–MAKE IT VISIBLE

One of my keys to effective organizing is to MAKE IT VISIBLE. For me this means creating organization that allows me to see the things I have. Plastic containers, open baskets, hooks, racks and binders are a few of my favorite organizing tools. If I see it, I use it and if everything has a home its less likely to end up in a pile.

***I rotate my bath towels on the shelves after I’ve done laundry each week. This way all the towels we own get used and washed on a regular basis which helps keep the color consistent in all of them

Organizing Tip #5–CONTAIN YOUR STUFF

On the flip side of my wanting to have things visible is my desire to HAVE THINGS CONTAINED and orderly. This is where creativity comes into play. I use Command Hooks to hang all types of things around my house, my rolls of crafting washi tape are housed in a kitchen storage piece and I use hanging shoe storage to hold scarves. Think about how you ideally would want to store and organize items and then look for a solution that works for that function. It may not be an item that was originally meant for that purpose.

Organizing Tip #6–MAKE IT PRETTY

MAKING AN ORGANIZED SPACE LOOK PRETTY while it also functions well is one of the best parts of organizing to me. Incorporate pretty jars and containers into your desk top organization or create a fun display board using a pretty frame to hold your jewelry. When a space looks nice you’ll want to keep it organized.

***incorporate decorative accessories into your organization

***I love the idea of covering paint cans in decorative paper for craft storage

***I often use vintage milk glass pieces for storing jewelry and cosmetics

Organizing Tip #7–LABEL IT

LABELS are your best friend when it comes to organizing. It helps identify the contents of a basket, helps when you are sorting items and labels let you add a personal touch to your organizational system. If you’re looking for unique and inexpensive label options, check the $1.00 section at Target and Michael’s for fun tags or chalkboard stickers.
