My Latest Flea Market Finds–Road Trip Treasures

Flea Market Finds

Whenever we drive to see my mom in Oklahoma, we plan a few pit stops at flea markets and antique stores along the way.  I typically find an item or two but nothing to brag about.  This trip however was different.  I lucked upon lots of unique pieces at great prices. Most of what I found will go in my Etsy shop but I am keeping a couple of items for myself.

Staffordshire dogs are really popular right now and I found a couple of different dog pieces.  The first was this single dalmatian figurine.  I know these were originally sold in a set as bookends but as a single it makes a great decor pieces for a bookshelf.

Flea Market Finds

The other dog pieces I found was this set of dalmatian bookends.  I’m tempted to keep these but into the Etsy shop they’ll go.

This blue and white lidded jar is so cute.  If it wasn’t for its petite size you’d think it was a garden stool.  I snapped this piece up for $5.00 and I’m going to keep it for myself.

I’m also on the look out for brass trays and this one had beautiful details.  It’s pretty large in size and would make a great bar tray.

Flea Market Finds

I love milk glass and see these bowls quite often but have never purchased one.  The embossed fruit motif on the bottom is so intricate and pretty and the bowl is super heavy.

I don’t know how long the brass pineapple trend is going to last but I keep buying them if I can find them at a good price.  I already own two so I’m going to be listing this lidded piece in the shop after I clean it up a bit.

Flea Market Finds

This pretty brass letter holder has me in a quandary…sell or keep?  The design is really pretty and you can tell its a great quality piece. Since I have good luck selling letter holders in my shop I’ll probably sell this one.

I also found a silver-plated one that needs some TLC.  It was less than $3.00 so if it doesn’t clean up well I’ll just keep it.

Flea Market Finds

My favorite find of the trip was this ceramic elephant stool.  It’s in great condition and I practically stool it from the dealer with the price they had on it.

Autumn Decorating Idea–Fall Leaf Branches

Fall Decorating Idea:  Fall Leaf Branches

Last week the hubby and I headed off on a road trip to visit my mom in Oklahoma.  Our travels took us through three states and lots of countryside where I really started to notice the coming of fall.  Trees are starting to turn, leaves are beginning to trickle to the ground and the warm, rich colors of fall are starting come alive.

One of the things that struck me on our drive was the simplicity and beauty of fall foliage.  Since I don’t do a ton of decorating for fall, I’m loving the idea of a few fall leaf branches placed in a jar or vase.  The leaves add color and texture, the branches create visual dimension and a natural touch like leaves makes any space feel more inviting.

Decorating for fall doesn’t get any easier than that!

Clip and gather branches of brightly colored leaves and arrange them like flowers in a decorative vase.  Clear containers let the beauty of the leaves stand out while colorful glassware creates a more modern look and feel.

With so many varieties of leaves just outside your door, it should be easy to find a color that works with your décor.

For a dramatic centerpiece, gather several large branches into a large vase or pot.  Let the branches extend up and out to create a more organic arrangement.

Large groupings of leaves can create a visual backdrop over a mantel just as a mirror or piece of artwork would do.

If you like the idea of decorating with fall leaf branches, here are a few tips that will help your arrangements last:

  1. Choose bright-colored branches that have not peaked in color
  2.  Clip branches with a sharp garden clippers
  3. Remove 2 to 3 inches of bark from the end of the branch and then pound the end of the branch flat.  This will help the branch absorb water better.
  4. Place branches in a container with a mixture of 1/3 glycerin and 2/3 warm water.  Branches should last for a couple of weeks.

When it comes to fall décor, do you go all out or do you like simple touches?

♠  VINTAGE TOAST RACKS  ♠

I’ve mentioned before that I have an Etsy shop where I sell vintage decor and handcrafted items.  One of my best-selling items are vintage toast racks. Whenever I come across one in good quality I pick it up.  You might be thinking that I sell these rack to use to hold toast but you’d be wrong.  After buying my first toast rack and styling it as a stationery/letter holder, that’s how I’ve been promoting them ever since.

Most of the racks I’ve round have been silver-plated but you can find them in brass, milk glass or even decorative ceramic styles like this blue and white beauty. #yesplease

I’ve made shopping easy for you and rounded up a few of my favorite toast racks, all under $20!

This one is for all you blue and white lovers.

This one is perfect for a desk and can hold more than just stationery.

If your style is art deco, you’ll love this one.

And I love this brass swan piece.

We’re heading off on a road trip tomorrow and I plan to stop at a few flea markets along the way.  Fingers crossed that I score a few toast racks.

Best of ConfettiStyle–Tablescapes

◊◊◊

Creating beautiful tablescapes is something I really enjoy doing.  It’s always a challenge to see how I can mix and match my china, glassware and linens to create a new look. After years of decorating tables, I’ve learned that one of the best way to invest in table decor is purchasing decorative salad  plates instead of dinner plates.  If you own a set of white dinnerware, you’ll be able use your decorative salad plates to easily change the look from season to season. I hope you enjoy a few of the table settings I’ve shared here on the blog.

Blue & White Tablescape

It’s not secret that I love blue and white chinoiserie decor so of course I had to create a tablescape inspired by blue and white. Its one of my favorite table settings to date. This pretty table also included two DIY projects, my easy monogram napkins and paint pen bowls which I just realized I never shared the tutorial on.

Natural and Gold Fall Tablescape

Last year I pulled together a gold, off-white and grey tablescape for fall.  It was the perfect mix of soothing fall colors with a touch of glam. I also wrote a post with tips on creating a fall table setting here.  p.s. I’m going use the white pumpkins again this year but with a different color combo.

Portfolio Review: Interior Designer Mark D. Sikes

5-HBX090116toc3-sikes-800x965

After sharing the room image above in Saturday’s post, I spent some time going through the portfolio of the designer that created this space.  If you’re not familiar with the work of Mark. D. Sikes, I’m going to share more of his work with you today.

Mark D. Sikes started his career in visual merchandising and marketing and honed his skill of creating spaces that are filled with beautiful details, classic design elements and a mix of modern and European furnishings.  In 2011 he started his own design firm and has been soaring ever since with numerous magazine features and show house designs under his belt.

What I love most about Mark’s work is the mix.  I mention the “mix” a lot here on the blog because of think it is one of the more important design aspects of any room.  The mix comes through variety–a variety of textures, colors, finishes and styles.  Mark is a master of the MIX!

As you look through the images of his work below, take note of how each room is styled and how items are layered to create a distinctive look for each space.

This colorful and eclectic space below is showcased in the September 2016 issue of House Beautiful. The Asian art and the eclectic mix of accessories are my favorite details.

It’s clear from Mark’s work that chinoiserie and bold color are part of his signature style. Many of his spaces include a chinoiserie design garden stool (one of my favorite accent pieces).

In addition to residential projects and show houses, Mark designed Reese Witherspoon’s Nashville store, Draper James.  He created a space that exudes southern charm and style representative of Reese.
