Decorating with Corbels–Add this to your DIY List

When it comes to design, I love a good architectural detail.   Details that have a sense of style and history to them and that add character to a home.  Corbels are one of my favorite architectural accents.  Do you know what a corbel is?  Basically it is a structural piece of stone, wood or metal that juts out from a wall and is meant to hold-up or carry weight.

Corbels have been used for centuries in building construction and over the years have become a decorative element that people are adding to the interior decor of their homes.

DIY Inspiration–Fabric Covered Console Tables

Fabric…It’s Not Just for Curtains Anymore!

IMG_8539

Ever since I saw this amazing fabric covered console table by Timothy Corrigan at the ASO Showhouse, I’ve been smitten with the idea of covering a table of my own.

IMG_8541

Not only does a fabric covered table stand out as a unique design element but the texture and visual punch it adds to room is really dramatic.

Fabric Covered Tabls

When you think about all the fabric options out there, this fairly easy diy project is a great way to create a custom look for your home.

Even though I didn’t need any more inspiration, I went looking for some and came across these looks and ideas…

Sometimes a room just needs a bit of natural texture and covering a table in grasscloth can add the touch needed.

You can never go wrong with an animal print and this python print turns simple stacked console tables into a stunning look.  I also like that a coat of Mod Podge was  added to give the fabric a more durable surface.

A mini chevron pattern is subtle but interesting.  With a print like this you can go neutral in color or create a table that adds a pop of color.

Even tables with a design detail can be covered in fabric.  This silhouette is perfect for the finishing touch of nail heads.

A bold fabric choice on a stylized console table would look great in a foyer.

Even the big box stores (HomeGoods) is getting in on the look with this navy fabric covered table and silver nail heads.

If you’re a diy’er and want to give this project a try, here’s a great tutorial on the process. And if you can’t score a super cheap parson table at your local thrift store, here’s a couple of budget friendly tables to check out.

What to Get Mom for Mother’s Day?

Greetings!  I hope you had a great weekend!  My weekend started off awesome and ended the same way so I have nothing to complain about.  The sunny skies and warm weather were an added bonus.

Did you get out and do any shopping this weekend? Maybe looking for a Mother’s Day gift like me?

If you were out and about you probably noticed that a lot of stores have spring sales going on now. It’s a great time to pick up spring fashion accessories, home décor accents and spring footwear.

If you follow me on Instagram (which I hope you do), you saw that I mentioned the buy one, get one 50% off accessory sale at Target. There are some really great pieces that would make fab Mother’s Day gifts.

How about a pretty scarf for mom ($14.99)…

or maybe a summer tote bag ($34.99)!

15065995_201402201202

I spotted several scarves and summer totes I wanted for myself but after getting the “not another handbag” look from the hubs I decided a trip on my own was in order so I’m heading back today to do some more looking.

Another store I popped into over the weekend was C. Wonder.  You all know I love that store!  They have their additional 50% off sale going on now and if you or your mom loves monograms you don’t want to miss this.

This monogram iPhone case is $24.99 less 50% and every letter is a different color combo.  I couldn’t pass up the ‘S’ since it was my favorite color combo–red, white and gold.

8752_4122_1_G

I know my mom would love a monogrammed mug paired with her favorite tea.  The mug is $7.99 less 50%. You can’t beat that and it’s never to early to start thinking about Christmas gifts too!

This monogram pillow cover is gorgeous in person and I wish I would have found an M but no go.  $29.99 less 50%.

9598_905_1_A

If you’ve wanted one of the classic C Wonder nylon totes, now is the time to snag one on sale.  Not all the sizes are on sale but the mini and Easy tote sizes are.  Mini–$44.99 and the Easy tote is $59.99 less 50%.  You can also get the bag monogrammed for an extra $10. What mom wouldn’t love this?

If your mom loves to entertain, she’ll love these fun herringbone coasters Set of 4 for $34.99 less 50%.

And I love this Trellis print travel case for $49.99 less 50%.  There are more sizes available too!

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I need to get my gift wrapped and in the mail.  Come back tomorrow and I’ll show you a fun and easy gift wrapping idea your mom will  love.

Design Lessons from Show Houses and Model Homes

When we lived in Seattle I made it a point to attend the Street of Dreams Show House tour every year.  Yes I went to see what it would be like to live in a multi-million dollar home but I also went to get design ideas.  I also made it a point to tour builders model homes on the weekends to seek out even more design ideas.  Show houses and models homes can be a great source of design inspiration and product sourcing (and buying) if you know how to look beyond the beauty of a space and learn to analyze how a space was put together. Want to know what you can learn about design from show houses and model homes?  Well follow along and I’ll tell you.

First let me say that most show house designs push the envelope with style and are decorated to the hilt.  The designers that do these homes are challenged to make the rooms stand out and have drama and impact.  You’ll often see bolder colors, more elaborate mill work, exotic finishes and over accessorized spaces in a show house.

When it comes to model homes, builders have a completely different agenda when it come to decorating.  Builders want to make the home feel as large as possible and decorate it so that it will appeal to a range of people.  The decor of model homes can sometimes seem sparse and the design details can come off as elementary but there are still a few things you can learn from these model homes.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM DESIGNER SHOW HOUSES

Designer show houses are filled with all kinds of amazing design ideas, from the latest furniture and accessory trends, unique wall-covering and paint options to custom details that you may not have seen before.  These show houses can also give you an expert lesson in accessorizing and styling a room.

Want to learn the art of coffee table décor, then check out the table arrangements in a show house.  You’ll see how different accessories are grouped together for impact and to achieve a balanced arrangement.

There will be lots of vignettes in a show house so analyze how they are styled and layered for new ideas.

Easy Updates for the Bathroom {and a few design tips}

Happy Friday!

Often the most neglected room in the home, the bathroom deserves just as much décor love as the other rooms in your home.  During construction or a remodel of your bathroom, you can add decorative elements like flooring, paint and fixtures to enhance the space but the decorating does not have to end there.  Just like refreshing the accessories in your living room or family room, updating your bathroom seasonally or yearly is easy and doesn’t have to cost a lot.

Here are some quick and simple ways to update your bathroom anytime the mood strikes.

PAINT THE CEILING

Tip:  A semi-gloss or gloss paint will add a bit of shine and make your bathroom look a bit more glamorous

PAINT THE CABINETS

Tip:  Flat or eggshell paint finishes will hold up best to dirt and fingerprints

GO WITH A DECORATIVE RUG INSTEAD OF A BATHROOM RUG

Tip:  Instead of multiple rugs, look for a rug that is large enough to cover most of the floor.  A single rug will add more visual impact.

Tip:  Always us a rug liner so there’s no slipping and sliding

Tip:  If the rug is in front of the tub/shower, go with a wool or wool blend which will hold up to water better

p.s.  On Monday I’ll be sharing photos from a fabulous designer showhouse I previewed yesterday and on Tuesday I’ll share a few thing you can learn about design by going to showhouse events.

Inspiring Work Spaces {and the ingredients to create your own}

One of the best ways to stay motivated while working is to have an office space that gives you everything you need–inspiration, comfort, visual interest, organization and storage.  Combine these ingredients with your personal style and you can create a work space that allows you to maximize your work efforts while at the same time fueling your passions.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration for your work space can come in the form of artwork hung on the wall or by creating an inspirational vision board.  Hang things on the board that relate to your goals, the dreams you have for your life and your business and be sure to include inspirational quotes to keep you motivated and moving forward.

LIGHTING

Ample lighting is a key to an effective work space. I love using decorative tabletop lamps instead of traditional office lamps when the decor allows.  Pretty lamps, with pretty lampshades will make your office feel more intimate and relaxing.

via

ORGANIZATION AND STORAGE

It’s hard to be productive or creative in a work space that is messy and cluttered.  Take advantage for the vertical space in your office for storage and use space under tables to store office equipment or supplies you don’t use often.

PERSONAL ACCESSORIES

Surround yourself with things you love.  Tea cups, pretty pencil cups and stylish desk accessories will help personalize your work space and make working more enjoyable.

INSPIRING COLOR

In my world, every office space needs a punch of color.  Vibrant colors stimulate the mind and will keep you energized when working.  Simple touches like colorful storage boxes, a framed bulletin board or even flowers on your desk can add the pop of color you need.  Tip: your desk chair is a great way to introduce color into your work space.

 CREATIVE WORK AREA

If space allows, create a separate meeting or work area in your office.  Just getting from behind you desk and creating a different view to look at will make working more enjoyable.  I love the corner work area below–big enough to spread out and get creative, but compact enough not to crowd the room. And check out all the personal touches that give this area style.

COMFORTABLE AND PRETTY SEATING

And of course a pretty chair is a must for an inspiring work space.  Check thrift store for a chair that you can easily re-upholster, paint and make your own.

Eclectic Spring Tablescape

Happy Saturday!

It’s kind of a lazy day around my parts.  I’m still getting caught up on laundry from my trip and working on setting up new items in my Etsy shop.  Yesterday I was going to share a simple and eclectic tablescape I pulled together to celebrate spring and Easter but the day was gloomy and getting a decent picture was not in the cards.  The sky today is still dreary but I was able to capture a few shots of the table.

IMG_8502

I love to style tabletops and during the spring and summer eclectic and colorful is my style of choice.

For this spring centerpiece I used a collection of vintage and new pieces I had around the house.

The tulips and round greenery sphere are placed in a vintage trophy urns and a two large mercury glass balls are displayed under a glass cloche I picked up at a sample sale.

Slide1

For the place setting I used black and white striped placemats from Ikea and a mix of plates from Target and HomeGoods.  I made the polka dot napkins.

IMG_8500

To add a pop of color, I filled a twig birds nest with colorful felt balls.   The brass bird-cage adds to the eclectic mix.

IMG_8496

We’re not doing anything major for Easter brunch but I will be adding a special Easter touch to the table tomorrow.  I’ll pop in tomorrow and share it with you.
