Favorites Of The Week {a random mix of great stuff}

Whew! What a week it has been. I’ve been running in 50 different directions sourcing products, working on projects and trying to wrangle the paperwork on my desk.

I wish I could say this was going to be a low-key weekend but it’s not. I’m spending all day tomorrow in meeting with the non-profit agency I work with then I’m doing some major house cleaning. We do have a fun outing planned for Sunday morning but the rest of the day will be spent working and preparing for the busy week ahead. Oh, I am planning to shut things down so I can watch the Oscars!

I hope you can find some downtime to enjoy a few of my favorites from the week.

What To Put In A Decorative Bowl

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘decorating is in the details?’ I believe that the design details within your decor are the that bring it to life and give your home its personality. Take decorative bowls for instance. They look good on coffee tables, console tables, on bookshelves and just about any other place you put them.

The other day I was shuffling some of my accessories around and put a decorative bowl on the coffee table and one on the console table in the dining area. The bowls looked great where they were but the question of what to put in them popped up. After rummaging through my stash of accessories and crafts, I came up with a few options. Here’s what you might consider putting in a decorative bowl.

Scrabble Pieces

I’ve bought a couple of old scrabble games at thrift stores, planning to use the tiles in other projects. Since that hasn’t happened, I decided to use them as decor and placed them in a beautiful blue and white bowl I have. The tiles add an eclectic and fun detail to the coffee table.

PINECONES

I’ve got two baskets filled with pinecones that travelled with us all the way from Seattle when we moved 15 years ago. They add a rustic and wintry feel to my decor this time of year and look really great piled up in a vintage brass bowl.

ALPHABET BALLS

When my store was open, these alphabet balls were a bigger seller. In the store I displayed them under a glass cloche or in a lidded glass jar but for my decor, I love them in this gold pedestal bowl I found at Hobby Lobby around Christmas. The balls are whimsical but still have a classic vibe to them.

DOMINOS

Here’s another look I created for my coffee table last week using Dominos in a gold leaf bowl. What I like most is the contrast of the black and white dominos against the gold bowl and animal print tray. The dominos also add a playful feel to the table.

Easy Accessorizing Idea–Wood Beads

When in comes to accessorizing, sometimes the littlest item can make the biggest impact.

One unexpected accessory item I’m seeing more and more in room vignettes is a string of beads. Whether draped over a decorative jar or nestled in a bowl, a strand of beads can make a style statement that stands out.

I love this wood bead and tassel strand that Myquillyn over at The Nesting Place created. Such a fun accent hanging on a chair, over the edge of a mirror or on off a door.

Pottery Barn sells a variety of beads which make a fun accent on a coffee table, draped over a decorative jar or gathered in a wooden bowl.

You can make your own bead strand using beads of any size. Larger beads will make a bolder impact and work great clustered in a tray.

Sherry over at Design Indulgence is one of the first people I saw using beads as a decorative accent. She has a gift when it comes to accessorizing and I love the way she used beads as part of her decor.

I’m loving my new series, Product + Inspiration and I’m really excited to bring you this latest post which marries my love of vintage, brass and trays.

Brass trays are always on my radar whenever I’m antique shopping and in my book they are one of the best values when it comes to vintage decor. Trays in general top the list of practical and versatile accessories and the list of decorating ideas using trays is endless.

My favorite brass tray style is faux bamboo because of the classic details but if that look is not for you, there are lots of other styles you might run across.

DIY Nut Bowls

Sometimes I think my creativity is a curse because I rarely can look at an item and think it’s perfect the way it is. More times than not I look at something and imagine how I could make it better, cuter or more decorative.

Take these small wood bowls I saw at HomeGoods. I thought about all the different food items that could be served in these bowls and even thought about how cute they’d be on a vanity holding jewelry. They were adorable just like they were but I imagined them being even cuter.
