Under Glass | Decorating with Glass Cloches

 Decorating with Glass Cloches

When I was cleaning house the other day I realized that I own 5 glass cloches, 11 if you count the small ones I use with small cake pedestals for desserts.

I’ve always loved the look of cloches and have fun decorating with them seasonally like fall and Christmas but I often struggle with how to use them for everyday decor.

If you own a glass cloche or two and struggle with decorating ideas, I’ve rounded up a few that I think will inspire you.

As you go about decorating keep in mind that a cloche is a great place to display collectibles, art, vintage jewelry, plants and flowers.

DECORATING WITH GLASS CLOCHES

The idea of nesting small globes under glass is really great for a home office, study or kids play room. This is a simple and eclectic design statements that looks really expensive.  World Market sells small world globes perfect for recreating this look.

For more traditional decor, this idea of a stack of small leather books with a decorative object on top works.  You can find a types of leather books on Etsy.

Here’s a fun idea using a vintage scale.  You can place just about anything under a cloche on a scale and it would look amazing.  I think it would be fun to put colorful spools of thread under one cloche and a collection of thimbles under the other.

In the past I’ve rolled old book pages and put them under one of my cloches’ and I love the way it looks.  This is a fun idea at Christmas using rolled music sheets and small ornaments.

My friend Marsha will love this idea because she is a tea cup collector.  This is a fun way to showcase special tea cups.  I can envision three of these down the center of a table as the centerpiece for a tea party.  Shop your local thrift store or flea market for unique tea cups and don’t be afraid to mix and match the cups and saucers.

I have a love for sea shells and think this idea is so beautiful.  If you collect shells during your vacations to the beach this would be a fun way to display them.

Style Your Nightstand–Tips & Inspiration

Styling Tips For Your Nightstand.001.jpeg.001.jpeg.001

One of the things I am always look for on Pinterest are beautiful nightstand images.  I love getting a glimpse at a person’s lifestyle and seeing how they style and decorate different areas of their home.

As a designer, I recognize that accessorizing a small, compact area like a nightstand can be more challenging than a larger living area for some people. So today I’m sharing the ingredients for styling your bedside table like pro.

4 Fall NightStand 2014

Your bedroom is the most private space in your home and the items you put on your nightstand should be a mix of personal and decorative decor.

♦♦♦

When it comes to pulling your items together, keep these style tips in mind:

Layers!  Unless you take a minimalist approach to decorating, you want to position items to create a layered look.  Layers will add the visual interest and help create a dynamic statement with you collection of items.  Vary the placement of items on the table surface, front to back and side to side and keep the scale of your lamp in mind when positioning items.

The Mix!  This is where style and function meet.  Accessorize with items you use on a daily basis (alarm clock, journal/book) along with items that are decorative.  Decorative items like small trinket trays, lidded boxes and containers can work as storage AND as a design statement. And personal items like books and picture frames will add a personal feel to the decor on your nightstand.

♦  The Background!  Even if you have a wall decor piece hanging over your bed, don’t forget about the wall space directly behind the nightstand.  Hanging a mirror or piece of artwork over your bedside table is a great to build up the impact for the overall vignette.  You can even lean pieces of art or other flat decor against the wall like I did at Christmas one year to enhance the layered look of your decor.

Softness! A soft element like flowers or greenery can add an air of energy and life to the vignette.

Keep it Fun! And finally, as you go about decorating your nightstand, throw in an unexpected object to add personality and flair.

Anatomy of a Vignette

A couple of years ago I started a blog series entitled ‘Anatomy Of’ but recently I fell of the wagon and have neglected the series.  Today I’m jumping back on the wagon and sharing another installation in the series…The Anatomy Of a Vignette.

Anatomy Of A Vignette.001.jpg.001

The premise behind these blog posts is to share design tips and decorating inspiration for specific parts of your home so you can tackle decorating with confidence.

If you’re not clear on what a vignette is, here’s the formal definition that explains it:

‘Vignette is a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about a character, idea, setting, or object’

Or in general terms, a vignette is a capsule of items that tell a story, convey a feeling or create an impression.

I love creating vignettes when decorating homes because they are one of the best ways to add personality and create visual interest within your decor. Here are a few tips to help you build vignettes around your home and lots of beautiful images to inspire you.

TIP:  Layers are key!  Vignettes are not just about what the eye sees on the surface but what it sees front, middle and back.  Layer and overlap items as you build vignettes to create visual dimension.

TIP:  Variety is the spice of life!  The items you include in a vignette don’t have to be a perfect match in finish, color or even style.  As long as the combination of items feel cohesive the vignette is successful.

TIP:  Texture sets the tone!  Use items with different finishes to create visual energy within your vignettes.  Baskets with metal, wood with ceramic and stone with glass are good combinations.

TIP: Style from top to bottom!  When creating vignettes in your home, look at the entire area where the vignette sits and make sure the area above and below is part of the visual statement or is left free and clear.

TIP:  Make it personal!  One of the best tips I can give you for styling a vignette is to incorporate a few truly personal items into the mix.  Photos, travel treasures or collected pieces will always give vignettes a personal feel and make them feel connected to your decor.

10 Ways To Give Your Home a High-End Look

I took the design style quiz over on the decorist.com website and by golly I think they defined my style to T!

Here’s what it said…

You… like eclectic styles at heart with an eye towards integrating more modern looks.

You prefer to mix and match different styles rather than be totally traditional or modern, but you like to use the clean looks of more modern pieces. You love figuring out how to combine different designs into one cohesive whole.

YOU …

  • want your home to be stylish and that is a reflection of you and your overall tastes.
  • like a rustic or natural but refined look to your home.
  • like ethnic accents and a “worldly” look.
  • like warm colors.
  • like bright pops of color or colorful accents.
  • like luxurious materials.
  • like to use texture for visual interest.
  • like to use some traditional gilded or wood accents in your home to give it a sense of timelessness
  • like the look of natural materials in your home

The one thing the quiz failed to pick up on is that I love décor with a high-end look.

When it comes to decorating, I love to mix of budget finds with investment pieces, vintage finds with new pieces, and refined looks with rustic styles.  I don’t think your house has to be filled with expensive décor and furniture to have style, but I do believe there are easy and cost-effective things you can do to give your décor the look of high style .
