The Magic of Christmas

 Hi all,

You know my friend Suenette, who decorates over-the-top for Halloween?  Well, her Christmas décor is just as pretty and worthy of its own post here on ConfettiStyle so sit back and enjoy in the merriment!

This picture does not do their main Christmas tree justice.  It is decorated with hundreds of vintage and Christopher Radko ornaments AND it spins!  It is so magical and beautiful!

Country Living Fair 2012

Last weekend my friend Dorothy and I attended the Country Living Fair at Stone Mountain outside Atlanta.  This is the 3rd year that Country Living has brought the fair to Atlanta and the weekend couldn’t have been more ideal.

What I love most about the fair is seeing all the amazing handcrafted and vintage goods.  The selection ranges from rustic to chic and there is something for everyone.

Here’s Dorothy standing by the signature pumpkin stack at the entrance of the fair.

There was lots of original hand painted art. I love the bowl of red flowers on the red background.

Every year the Country Living shop has some wonderful tablescapes on display!

I spotted those round wine barrel corks with the numbers for only $2.00 at a vendor.

Love this pumpkin flower vase. A hole was cut into the pumpkin and the bottom of a plastic water bottle was inserted to hold the flowers.

All of the Country Living Books were on sale at the CL store.  These were two of my favorites!

There were so many incredible pieces of jewelry for sale  Lots of beautiful junk, vintage pieces and findings repurposed into beautiful necklaces.

If you love “junk’ this was the place to be.

Lots of industrial furniture and accessory pieces.

These handcrafted pillow covers were so cute.

An old door knob turned picture holder.

These wings made from rolled sheet music were stunning!

I loved this vintage iron wall sculpture!

One of my favorite vendors, Happy Chair was back again this year with some awesome designs.  Check out the wood pediment on the top of this chair.

This floor clock was made from various machine parts and vintage pieces.  Crafted by Jill Schwartz.

I so wanted to buy this vintage sign.  Too cute!

The Sisters on The Fly were there again with their amazing trailers.

More industrial pieces.

This vendor had so many cool vintage scales for sale.

And, everywhere you looked there were bins and baskets full of vintage goodies.

I’m already looking forward to the Country Living Fair next year.  It makes for a great outing and I always get my fill of design inspiration!

What I Bought at The Longest Yard Sale

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post recap of our Longest Yard Sale trip, we shopped our way from Kentucky to Alabama.

Before I left home, I created a list of items I hoped to find and am glad to say that most of the items got checked off my list.

 My Shopping list included:

VINTAGE TYPEWRITER–I’ve wanted one of these for a few years.
MIRRORS–I found one that I really like.  I plan to paint the frame black or white.
VINTAGE SCALE–Another item that I have wanted for a while.  I seen lots at the markets I attend but most are priced above what I want to pay.  The one I found on our trip was $15.00!
VINTAGE RUBBER STAMPS–Found a few to add to my rubber stamp collection, now over 1100!
VINTAGE JEWELRY–I was looking for jewelry that I could repurpose into the jewelry I make and sell on my Etsy Shop.  I found some really cool hardware pieces and some great rhinestone pieces too!
VINTAGE LINENS—Didn’t find much that I wanted to buy expect a few vintage hankies!
OWLS–I’m on an Owl kick lately but didn’t find anything that floated my boat.
LETTERS and TYPOGRAPHY–I purchased some cool metal letters and an ampersand sign–Great buy for $4.00!
CLOCKS–Funny but I didn’t see much in this category.

And, here are photos of a few items I purchased…

Love this vintage gold necklace I bought!

I found lots of rhinestone pieces with nothing over $1.50 a pair.

Beautiful vintage crystal knobs.

A classic wood bench for $8.00.  I have plans to reupholster and paint this guy.

These are only a few of the pieces I picked up at the Everything $1.00 vendor.

Some old rubber stamps.

E and S for Eugene and Shelly!

I didn’t buy this art for the images but for the chunky bold frames–$8.00 for the pair!  WhooHoo!

A pretty ornate frame that will look great with some paint.

This chunky wood frame was purchased in the rain for only $8.00.  Another stellar find!

Vintage yarn spools and a ceramic glove mold which I see a lot but not for $9.00 which is what I paid for it.

My vintage typewriter!  It is in excellent condition and it puts a smile on my face.

Love my vintage scale!  I bargained for this and won!

I found lots of cool vintage hardware pieces I’ll create jewelry with.

A beautiful silver plate serving piece.  I’m thinking of using the bottom as a planter and will repurpose the top into something else.

Tiara Black Diamond Cocktail Set–Ice Bucket and six DOF’s

 Vintage Salt Cellars!

 And, beautiful vintage hankies!

Now that you’ve seen some of the items I purchased, I want to share a few tips on shopping the sale with you.  This was the second year I attended the sale and between the two years I’ve learned a lot.

1.  Plan your route early and make hotel reservations!  Most of the hotels along the route sell out several months in advance and many raise their rates beyond your wildest dreams.  Yes, Super 8 was charging $250 for a room over the weekend.    I found a great room at the Crossville, TN Best Western for $90.  Not only was the hotel nice, offering a free hot breakfast but it was located right off interstate 40 so there were lots of stores, gas stations and restaurants in the area.  This will definitely be a stop for next year.

The other towns I’d look to stay in is Danville, KY or Albany, KY.

2.  Kentucky has the best selection and some of the best prices.  Last year we drove from Alabama up north to Chattanooga and although I found some good deals I heard from many people that Kentucky was the place to shop.  I also read the blog post from Eddie Ross on the items he found last year during the sale shopping between Kentucky and Chattanooga.  Based on this info. we decided this year to drive to Kentucky and come south.

All along the route you’ll find large pockets of vendors set up to sell items.  Kentucky had more of these than Tennessee or Georgia.  In some places over 500 vendors were set up.  Frankfort, Danville and Liberty, KY all had major shopping areas.  Crossville, TN was also one of the spot we heard that HGTV films at.

In my opinion stopping at these larger shopping spots paid off more than stopping more often at smaller venues.

3.  If you love it, buy it!  Don’t pass up something you love because I promise you’ll be thinking about it for the rest of the trip.  The Longest Yard Sale is not a place you want to muddle over your purchase.  If it fits your budget and you love it, go for it because there are lots of people looking over your shoulder.  My friend Tina snagged a $15 chair from under two women because she didn’t stop to think about it.

4.  Negotiate the price!  All of the vendors selling along the route are willing and expect to bargain on their prices.  I always ask “is this the best price you can do?’ and they always come down on the price.  I even had some vendors come down by 1/2 or more.

5.  Bring sufficient cash and small bills!  There are not a lot of banks or stores along the route so having cash on hand is a good deal.  Some vendors take credit cards but using a my credit card in some field in the  middle of Tennessee was not something I wanted to do.

6.  Bring lots of water and food.  Last year we only had two bottles of water when we started the trip and no food.  We thought we’d pass places to stop and eat but really didn’t.  While there are some small towns with restaurants along the way there are major areas where there is nothing at all.  If you don’t want to spend the weekend eating fair food, pack snacks and sandwiches in a cooler.  Subway made this trip easy for us.

7.  Dress comfortably and wear a hat.  It is hot as the dickens here in the south in August and being in the sun all day can wear you out.  Make it easy on yourself and don’t try to be cute….go for comfort!

And finally, take the time to enjoy the scenery and the people.  We met lots of super nice people along the route, some of the vendors I shop with at Scott Antique were even there.  You can definitely create some great memories during the Longest Yard Sale so have fun and take time to enjoy it all!

As for The Longest Yard Sale 2013….

I’ve already started thinking about the trip.  I’ll definitely be spending more time shopping Kentucky and am working on a partnership with either Dodge or Ford to secure cargo vans to take along.  I’d love to have a caravan of bloggers and friends so if you are interested let me know in the comments and I’ll keep you posted on all the plans.

That’s just about it for this years Longest Yard Sale.

Current Obession: White Ceramics

One of my thrifting obsessions of late has been white pottery and ceramics.  I love the look of collected pieces displayed together on shelves or tabletops.

Pinned Image

I’ve written about my love of vintage milk glass here, but what I’ve been attracted to lately is classic white pottery in vases, bowls, platters, pitchers and figurines.

There’s something so refreshing and dynamic about a collection of white pottery pieces!

I love the idea of white ceramics to organize a bathroom and add a little style.

And, I’m on the hunt for a white ceramic owl and buddha to add to my accessory mix.

If someone asked me what design and accessory statement is trending right now, it would for sure be white ceramics and pottery!

So, how many of you out there have white pottery in your home AND how do you display it?  I’d love to know.

The Art of Upholstery

The job of an upholsterer is one that I truly admire.  Not only is skill and an affinity to detail required, but an upholsterer also needs to have a keen sense of style and creativity.

Several years ago, I was introduced to Julie,  owner of The Upholstery Fashionista and her skill and ability with fabric and design details took my appreciation for upholstery to a whole new level.  Julie can most definitely re-upholster a chair in a simple fabric with classic trim, but where her talents really shine is when she is allowed to be totally adventurous with here work.

Many of her clients come to her with fabric in hand, but others know of Julie’s’ skill to select the perfect fabric, trim and hardware to really make a piece come to life.

I’m so impressed with Julie’s’ work and just had to share her talents with you.

Ladies and gentlemen I introduce you to the work of The Upholstery Fashionista

I love this ever so popular Ikat fabric on a traditional frame.

Julie creates beautiful pieces with a rustic, yet elegant look.  If a project calls for it, she does a lot to the wood refinishing herself.

This animal print chair with a solid linen back is so chic.

I love these French inspired chairs and the bold nailhead trim.

A pair of classic black and white herringbone wingbacks.

Another French inspired chair with a fun fabric combination.

An unexpected but stylish cording choice for this sofa.

Here’s a chair where Julie ran the stripe vertically on the seat and horizontally on the chair back giving this piece added style.

From frumpy to fabulous!

These are some of  Julie’s’ more eclectic pieces.  What a fun mix of fabrics and that high-gloss pink frame is so striking.

Love the polka dots.

“BEFORE”

“AFTER”    What a great transformation!

Love the sofas new look.

Love!

A 1970’s modern transitioned into a stylish look for today!

Love the detail front and back, and the silver bronze wood finish.

Classic!

Such a fun chair in my favorite color!

Pattern mixing done right!

For those of you living in the Atlanta area, Julie is available for upholstery work and can be contacted via The Upholstery Fashionista Facebook page  She is also in the process of setting up a booth at the Woodstock Market where you can see Julie’s’ work first hand and buy pieces right off the floor.  The Woodstock Market will have its first show of the year March 2-4 so mark your calendars.

Someday I’m going to have Julie teach me the art of  re-upholstery, but for now she’ll continue to be my go-to resource for custom upholstery work.

So which of Julie’s’ pieces is your favorite?

Room of The Week: Scarves Under Glass

This image has been a popular Pinterest pin of late.  What attracted me to this space was of course the wall decor,  Vintage Hermes scarves framed in simple black frames!

I love when an object from one side of the design world can make such a dynamic statement in another.

Fashion and Furnishings afterall are both breed with beauty in mind!

Bits of Inspiration: Vintage Christmas

I am in full Christmas decorating mode for clients this week, and in the evenings I’m working on all kinds of holiday projects around my house.

I mentioned before that my Christmas decor this year will be a mix of burlap, red, mercury glass and music themed elements.

Even with my theme set, I’m finding myself smitten and inspired by all the Vintage Christmas decor I’m seeing in blogland.   I love the mix of natural elements, the texture and all the shine and shimmer.  I’m so inspired, I’ve decided I’ll be making my version of many of these ideas to incorporate into my decor.

DIY Collage Art

During the Atlanta Home Furnishings and Gift market this past July, I stopped by one of my favorite showrooms, Southern Accessories Today,  to see one of my favorite wall decor lines, Paragon

Paragon developes some of the most outstanding wall decor in the market and are always presenting new and creative images.

One of the ways that Paragon stays on top of their game is by partnering with some of the leading interior designers and artist in the county to develop exclusive pieces.  Artist such as Candice Olson, Mark Abrams, Bobby Sikes, Vikki Mancil Weigel and Tim Burney.

One of my favorite collections from Paragon this show was the Tim Burney Shadow Box Art.  The art pieces were created by combining vintage and antique papers and cards into a collage, within a shadow box frame.  The texture and 3-dimensional layout made these piece really come to life.

Collage art has always appealed to me and is a great way to showcase pieces of your life, in an artist way.

Several weeks ago I spent a day at the Longest Yard Sale, which I wrote about here.  During my treasure hunting, I purchased some antique letters, dating back to 1933.  I don’t know who wrote the letters, but the beautiful handwriting on the old weathered paper appealed to me.

At the time I purchased the letters the Tim Burney collage art was in the back of my mind.  I was so inspired by these pieces that I decided to make a shawdow box collage piece for myself.

This past weekend, I pulled out a few treasures and created this:

To create my collage art, I included a few vintage playing cards I picked up at Scott Antique market, old keys sent to me from my mom,  a music page from The Oxford Book of Carols printed in 1948, a piece of fabric that I love, my vintage letter from The Longest Yard Sale, an old watch face, scraps of decorative art paper and a gold ampersand piece.

The shadow box frame was purchased at Home Goods for $15.99 and was lined with natural linen.

It was so much fun combining pieces of my past, treasures I’ve acquired recently and objects I love.

The next time you’re looking for a creative art piece for your walls, thinking about making your very own Collage Art piece.

I hope your week ahead is filled with lots of inspiration!
