Book Review: New York Living | Re-inventing Home

A couple of weeks ago I received a copy of the book New York Living | Re-inventing Home from the publisher.  I couldn’t wait to check it out.  When I was in college, I wanted to live in New York and pursue my love of fashion.  While I never made it to the Big Apple, my love for the city has never faded.  There is just something so magical and dynamic about New York.

This book gives you the opportunity to explore the city in a new way  and see the unique design styles of homes in the city as well as the surrounding boroughs.

The book showcases homes in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx.  As you turn each area you get an inside look at how these city dwellers decorate and style their homes.

The 26 homes profiled range from an apartment on the Upper West Side to a French Second Empire House in Staten Island.  Page after page, there is design inspiration ranging from the traditional and classic to the modern and contemporary.  And you it gives you the opportunity to see the New York skyline through the eyes of those living there.

One of the first things I recognized about this book was how large it is. There are over 290 pages of photos and home descriptions. The profile for each home starts with somewhat of  a history lesson about the area as well as insights into how the design of the home came to be.

Along side each photo are details about the design elements within the space and why they were chosen.

The photos are bold and bright so you’re sure to find inspiration in even the smallest vignette within a room.

Beyond living spaces, some of the owners’ studio, office and creative spaces are featured.  If you’re a creative you’ll love getting an inside look at where New Yorker’s live and work.

The last three pages of the book provide a summary of each home listing the designers, artifacts and others involved in creating the spaces.

New York Living | Re-inventing Home

“Beautiful living spaces exist in all five boroughs, and in the right hands, when they are carefully chosen and imaginatively envisioned, they indeed embody New York living!”  –Adele Chatfield-Taylor

I highly recommend this book if you’re a design enthusiast or have a love for New York like me. New York Living also makes a great gift for someone living in the city or looking to move there.

MOTHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE–ONLY THE BEST FOR MOM!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and making sure mom feels loved and appreciated on her special day (and everyday) is top of my list.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really come to understand the courage, dedication and selflessness that it takes to be a mother.  My mom is one special lady and along with teaching me about life she instilled in me the power to dream big and reach for my goals. Priceless gifts.

To help you celebrate your mom on Mother’s Day I’ve curated a gift guide filled with special pieces from a few of my favorite stores and online shops.

♦ Amara.com is a new online shop I recently discovered and to say I love everything on their site is an understatement.  They sell a wide range of products from over 300 of the leading home decor, gift and fashion brands around.  p.s.  I’ll be sharing more about Amara in a couple of weeks along with a fun collaboration I’m doing with them!

♦  BaubleBar continues to be one of my favorite sources for fashion jewelry.  Not only are their prices good but their tassel earring collection is hard to beat.  I want one of everything.

When we lived in Seattle, Nordstrom was a favorite shopping spot for clothing, handbags and shoes.  And now I love shopping their gift and home departments for unique items.  Mark you calendar for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale which will take place July 21-August 6th.

Mark & Graham is my go-to source for high-quality leather goods, entertaining items and accessories for both men and women. And I love that so many of their items can be personalized with a monogram.

My Round Top Antiques Market Shopping List

Round Top Antiques Market Shopping List by ConfettiStyle

If all goes according to plan I’ll be shopping up at storm at the Round Top Antiques Market in just a few days.

I attended Round Top for the first time last year.  Even though I had an idea of what I hoped to find, the magnitude of the show (and the cold weather) stopped me from doing my best shopping.  This year it’s going to be a different story.  The weather is going to be warm, I’ve been brushing up on my vintage shopping skills and I’ve got a LIST!

Over the years I’ve found that shopping with a list when I go to a flea market or antique store keeps me focused and yields better results. So when I hit Round Top this year not only will I be shopping with a written list but I’ll also have photos to serve as inspiration.  Want a peek at what’s on my shopping list…check it out below.

Since I love all things chinoiserie, I’ll be on the hunt for anything in that genre. I’m hoping to luck upon some Staffordshire dogs in white both for me and my Etsy shop.

I’ll also be looking for vintage fashion books.  I may have mentioned this before but I have a degree in fashion merchandising and spent most of my corporate career as a buyer and merchandising executive.  My love for fashion runs deep!

Right up there with my love of fashion is my love of vintage jewelry.  I love finding pieces that I can use to make my own custom jewelry and anything tassel and bejeweled is what I’m looking for.

One of the things I sell a lot of in my Etsy shop is vintage toast racks.  I show them as a desk accessory holding stationery and notecards which is such a fun way to use these days.  I found a couple last year and Round Top and hope to find some unique pieces this market.

One of things on my personal shopping list is vintage dinnerware.  Even though I can find pieces locally, I hoping to find a few unique designs to add to my collection.

Two items that I think I might not have luck finding are vintage wallpaper rolls and Asian art brushes.  I don’t often see these items when out shopping but I’m hoping that Round Top will deliver.

Also on the chinoiserie list is a monkey bowl and a pair of bamboo stools.  I lucked upon a blue and white monkey last year and posted a photo on Instagram.  One of my followers wanted to purchase it so I sold it to her.  Now I’m on the hunt for another one which I will be keeping.

Bamboo stools….wish me luck!

So there you have it, a look at my Round Top shopping list.  And in case you were wondering, I’ll have my eyes open for other items as well like ironstone, blue and white pottery and brass pieces.

You can check out last years trip to Round Top here.

p.s.  In route to Round Top we’ll be stopping in Jackson, Mississippi so if there are any great antique stores or flea markets in that area leave me a comment and let me know.

Favorites Of The Week {a random mix of great stuff}

Whew! What a week it has been.  I’ve been running in 50 different directions sourcing products, working on projects and trying to wrangle the paperwork on my desk.

I wish I could say this was going to be a low-key weekend but it’s not.  I’m spending all day tomorrow in meeting with the non-profit agency I work with then I’m doing some major house cleaning.  We do have a fun outing planned for Sunday morning but the rest of the day will be spent working and preparing for the busy week ahead.  Oh, I am planning to shut things down so I can watch the Oscars!

I hope you can find some downtime to enjoy a few of my favorites from the week.

Loving this market tote!  It’s on sale and I also spotted a similar design in stores on clearance for $17.99.

If you’re looking for a stylish rug in a neutral color, check out the Farrah rug.

Loving this emerald green soap dispenser from H and M Home. This glass cup and this glass jar are also part of the collection.

Speaking of fashion, I’m totally in smitten with the pom pom sneaker trim.  These are the cheapest I’ve seen so far but this brand does not fit my foot. I’m thinking a DIY might be in order. You can buy shoe clips here and a pom pom making tool here. {affiliate links}

The Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide

♦  I love everything that Lollia makes including this Lollia Poetic License Diffuser ($48).  Scent diffusers are a great way to add fragrance to a home without burning candles. I especially love to use diffusers in a bathroom or tuck one away in a guest bedroom.

♦  This Gilded Monogram DOF Glass ($18) is a good gift for someone (like me) that loves to entertain. One, two or four make a great hostess gift or family gift.  If you’re celebrating the holidays at a New Year’s Eve party, a set glasses would be ideal to ring in the new year.

♦  A pretty necklace can make an outfit. The Silver Links Statement Necklace ($29.99) is a gift that will be enjoyed long after the holidays are over.

♦ Emerald Green is one of my favorite colors and you can’t beat the price on this Green Pashmina Style Shawl ($5.99)!  It’s the perfect layering piece over a sweater or under a coat. One for them, one for me.√

♦  You’ll wow anyone with a gift of these Silver Mercury Glass Hurricane Candleholder ($11.89-$19.59).  They will look stunning grouped in the center of a table or next to the hearth.  And I’d also use them as vases by dropping a clear glass jar inside to hold flowers.  Check your local Cost Plus because these are selling out quickly online.

♦  Pretty {and functional) gloves are hard to come by but this pair of Echo Touch Zip Boucle’ Tech Gloves ($39) checks both boxes.  You can operate a cell phone with ease and stay warm while doing it.

♦  This L’Objet Malachite Tray ($120) is the most expensive gift in the gift guide but it is a beauty.  Envision this sitting on a side table, night stand or vanity holding pretty perfume bottles.

♦  If you’ve never read any of Steve Harvey’s books, I recommend you do. His books are filled with solid wisdom, advice and lots of laughs too.  I can’t wait to read his newest book, Jump: Take the Leap Of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance ($18.04).

♦  A girl can never have too many handbags.  The Crossbody Bag with Metallic Straps ($39.90) is a great bag for weekend shopping or traveling when you need hands free.

♦ I’m always stuffing my electronic cords in a zippered pouch but they never stay organized.  The idea of something to keep everything neat and tidy is so appealing.  I love this Leather Charger Roll Up ($49) because its compact and comes in fun colors.

♦  Personalized stationery just might be one of best gifts you can give someone. This 7 Tablet Notepad Set with Holder ($41) is a great price and personalization is available in array of colors.

2017 Color Of The Year: Greenery (a classic Christmas Color)

Pantone, the color authority for the fashion and home decor industries announced their pick for the 2017 Color Of The Year–Greenery.  Coming off a year where pastels  ruled, I expected a dark color for 2017 so I was with their pick.

I do love the energy and vibrancy that Greenery has and I’m excited to see this color shake up the fashion and decor industries a bit.

Patone 2017 Color Of The Year--Greenery

Greenery is a shade that works well paired with neutrals or more saturated colors and I love it combined with black.

It’s also a great accent color for walls, upholstery and textiles.

Here’s how Pantone described their 2017 Color Of The Year….

I expect Greenery, which I’m describe as apple green to have a big impact on holiday decor this time next year.  The color has been used in Christmas decor for years and it will only gain in popularity in 2017.

To celebrate Pantone’s color pick, what better way than with some ‘Greenery’ inspired Christmas inspiration.

I really love with that executive director of Pantone has to say about the color and couldn’t agree more…

“This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. It speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.”

Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute executive director
