Selecting Bold Color Combos That Work For You

I’m finding myself attracted to bold color combinations of late.  While I’ve always loved bright colors, I find the combination of two bright colors to be invigorating, refreshing and a source of happiness.

One of the color combinations I’m loving at the moment is Yellow and Orange.  Regardless of the tone, when these colors are used together they create a sense of warmth and comfort.  Yellow has always been and will continue to be one of the most used decorating colors and bright orange is a great color to add depth to a space.

Mixed with darker elements, orange and yellow take on a more mature  preppy feel.

Don’t these colors just make you happy? Mixed with traditional accessories and gold finishes, yellow and orange make everything around it feel classy and hip!

I love how the orange rug helps to ground the space and make everything else feel settled.

Deeper shades of orange mixed with lighter shades of yellow add just the right punch to create a focal point within a room.

Infuse a lot of white and orange and yellow become powerful color accents.

I’m also love the impact that Red and Teal give to a space.  Red lends an air of sophistication while teal adds a modern element.  When mixed with white these two colors just light up a space.

Love the colors in this living room... soft grey walls, red bamboo chair, white Ikea LACK bookcase, and teal accents.
I adore this deeper shade of teal mixed with a classic fire engine red and how crisp it looks.
See, if you asked what color I don't want to decorate with, I'd say red- not because I don't like red... but. Then I see this, it goes back to the fact that teal and red is a fav color combo... but I LOVE this.
Red is a powerful color on its own and when mixed with teal it becomes a bit more playful.

Bold touches make a big impact!

The third color combo that is making swoon is Pink and Turquoise.  When done right these colors lose all of their youthfulness and create a beautiful palette for decorating.

Softer tones of pink and turquoise are the poster child of feminine and pretty!

Using different shades of both colors can create a look that is soft without being too sweet.
Pink Orange Turquoise - Old & New - This room has it all!
And when surrounded by neutrals, pink and turquoise give a space a modern ethnic feel.

If you’re unsure about using bold colors in your home décor, here are few tips that might help you warm up to your favorite color combos.

1.  The next time you are at the grocery store look for flowers in your bold color choice and bring them home.  Create a flower arrangement and see how the color combination feels to you.  Flowers are not a big investment but if you like how the colors look and feel together you’ll be more confident using them in larger impact statements within décor.
Bold Color Combos
2. Consult your Color Wheel
Colors basically coordinate in one of two ways. Complimentary colors sit in direct opposition to one another.  These color pairings, such as blue and orange, create balance. Analogous colors sit next to one another on the color wheel. Analogous or “similar” color pairings, such as true green and yellow-green, coordinate because they share a base color
You can make the following combos using the color wheel as your guide:
Colors directly next to each other (i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
*Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other (i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
* Colors directly across from each other (i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
* Colors that form a T (i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
*Colors that form an X (i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
3.  Colors that are a part of a “color family” also apply. You can substitute pink with red and still be able to pull off the combos based on the color wheel
4.  When choosing your palette, be sure to limit your selection to just two or three hues, making an effort to use each shade multiple times throughout the room. Aim for at least three uses per color. This helps to create continuity, ensuring a flowing and well-coordinated design. Also, never underestimate the power of white space. A little bold goes a long way. White space creates contrast, giving the eyes a break and allowing bold hues to pop.
5.  If you are needing a starting point, look at the colors you wear.  Your personal wardrobe is a great barometer as to what colors you feel comfortable and confident in and around.
Red and Hot Pink
6.  Love bold colors, but still feeling a lack of confidence? Why not choose a bold color to use as an accent? Even in a small room, a single, well-placed accent wall in a bold color can add depth, making the space appear larger. You can also introduce a bold hue by opting for bright accessories, such as curtains and throw pillows.
love how bold these turquoise and magenta curtains are.
Here’s a great example of how dynamic my favorite bold colors can look when used together!
Still love this colcom, minus the overbearing yellow roses. Those throw off the orange stripes on the plate. I get it, trying to balance the eggs, but I'm mostly just into the lower half.

Being confident in choosing a bold color combination that will work for you is a bit science and a whole lot of gut instinct!

Scenes from the Weekend: Planning for Christmas

Happy Monday!

Did you gets lots accomplished this weekend?  I certainly did!

Most of what I did revolved around getting ready for Christmas.

I crafted lots of new items for my shop

I spent time creating a holiday decorating plan for a client.  Decorating with these pieces will be fun!

I picked up this magazine while running through Home Depot.  If you’re looking for some Christmas inspiration this is definitely a magazine you want to buy.

And, I decided how I was going to decorate my Christmas Tree and wrap my gift this year!

Originally I was thinking of  a black, red and white theme but decided to go with a more colorful and artist look after stumbling upon this inspiration photo.

Jewel Tones

source

I love these jeweled toned colors and was inspired to pull out the mosaic ornaments I made about 9 years ago. Yes, I sat in front of the TV for nights on end and swirled paint inside about 90 clear glass ornaments.

Here’s a look at my theme …

I’m planning on decorating my tree with nothing but my collection of mosaic ornaments and maybe a few solid silver ornaments buried deep in the tree to add some extra shine and shimmer.

I’m going to wrap all my gifts in solid colored paper and use contrasting color ribbons as the accent.

Oh how I love ribbon and wrapping!

I’ll be using these festive paper plates,

and this thrift store sweater in fun ways.  Stay tuned!

Every year I try to do something different with my decor, investing in only a few new things and re-using what I have in new ways. Even though we’ll be traveling for Christmas and I’ll be busy as all get-out between now and then, I can’t wait for the tree to go up and the lights to sparkle!

So, did anyone else have Christmas on their mind over the weekend?

I’ll be sharing the first of my holiday gift guides later this week so make sure to come back for a visit.

Preparing for the Holidays: 10 Things to Do

 Keep calm... christmas

source

I’ve mentioned several times on the blog that I’m a pretty organized person.  My organization tends to get a little off-balance during the holidays so it’s essential for me to develop a plan, make a list (or two) and employ a few tricks to get me through the season in one piece.

As I’ve begun to pull together my personal and business plans for the holidays, I thought I share with you my list of essential things to do to get ready for the season.  These are the things that keep me sane and let me to enjoy all that the season has to offer!

image via BHG

1.  DEVELOP A PLAN–Everything runs smoother when you have a plan!  My first step in getting ready for the holidays is to outline everything that needs to get done.  My list includes things like the areas of my home I plan to decorate, the items I need to buy for decorating, things I need to pull out of storage like holiday linens and dinnerware, and a list of holiday events we need to attend.  I usually outline my plan in a little notebook that I can carry with me at all times.

source

2.  STOCK UP ON WRAPPING SUPPLIES–Early November is the perfect time to take stock of your gift wrap supplies and begin stocking up on the necessities:  Gift Wrap, Ribbon/Bows, Tissue Paper, Gift Tags, Gift Boxes, Gift Bags and Double Sided Tape!  My favorite sources for holiday gift wrap are The Container Store’s Gift Wrap Wonderland, The Paper Source, on-line paper store Paper Mojo and IKEA (which sell out of their paper fast)!

3.  MAKE YOUR CHRISTMAS CARD LIST–Creating a list of everyone you plan to send a Christmas card to will help you when you sit down to write out the addresses.  As you make your list update any addresses and figure our how many stamps you need to buy.  I’m planning (as in hoping) to make my Christmas cards by hand again this year so a list will help me identify how many cards I need to make and aid me in purchasing any supplies that will be needed.

4.  CREATE A GIFT LIST AND BUDGET–I have some very difficult people in my family to buy for so a list is essential for me.  I also like to allocate my spending money as I create my list, so I can stay on budget and make sure I have a little “me” spending money too! As I ‘ve been out shopping earlier in the year, I’ve made notes in my phone of items I’ve come across that would be good gifts for family and friends.  This has given me a bit of a head start in the gift buying department.

5.  OUTLINE YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY SCHEDULE & PLAN YOUR WARDROBE–I don’t know about you, but I hate scrambling at the last-minute to find something to wear to a holiday party.  Outlining all the events you will be going to, the type of party and the dress code will keep you relaxed and calm as each event approaches.   You’ll be able to enjoy the party more if you plan out what you’re wearing (or need to buy) and have everything ready to go.

6.  PULL OUT YOUR DECORATIONS–Plan to pull out all of your Christmas decor a least a week before you plan to decorate.  Locate all the extension cords, ornament hooks, the tree skirt, wreath hook etc.  Stage everything in a spare bedroom or the garage so when decorating day comes you’ll be ready.

{Believe it or not but my holiday decor will start going up Nov. 20th–that’s the life of a designer whose really busy decorating other people’s homes}

7.  DEVELOP A MENU PLAN AND SHOPPING LIST–Hitting the grocery store during the holidays can test the best of us.  It is not the time to be wandering the aisles hoping that the item you drove to the store to get pops into your mind.  For all of your big holiday dinners, create a menu and make a shopping list of everything you’ll need.  When you arrive at the grocery store you’ll be able to go directly to what you need and get in and out in record time.  Here’s a great downloadable list you can print.

Pretty Menu Printable: This Designer Cooks | Christmas Planner

source

8.  SET ASIDE A DAY OR TWO TO DO YOUR GIFT SHOPPING–Plan into your schedule one or two days to hit the malls and stores to get all of your holiday gift shopping done!  Planning ahead will let you map your route so you’re not wasting time or gas.  If you’re buying clothing make sure to list the sizes next to each person so you’re not guessing.  And, as part of your planning process gather up store coupons and store rewards cards so you can take advantage of special offers and deals that will be out there.

I’ll be posting my 2012 Holiday Gift Guide starting November 12th!

9.  OUTLINE TRAVEL PLANS IF YOU’RE GOING OUT OF TOWN–We will be traveling this Christmas and will probably be breaking our travel time into two days instead of one.  That means a hotel room for one night and maybe even needing to make dinner reservations.  If you’ll be on the road for Christmas take the time to map out your travel plans, your stops along the way and even sites and attractions you want to see along the route.  Plus, make a list of essential items you need to remember to put in the car like bottled water, games for the kids, cd’s and blankets & pillows.

10.  TAKE TIME TO ENJOY & RELAX

One of the most important things you can do this holiday is to make sure to schedule some “me” time.  Take some time to enjoy your decor at home, take a ride to look at Christmas lights, attend a holiday play or get together for a casual night out with the friends!  Just think of it as a little gift to yourself!

Our holidays center a lot on family activities. Instead of gifts and goodies, I printed little cards for the advent pockets. Each one lists something we can do together each day. Some have “choose a special Christmas goodie” though. Most of the activities are ones we already attend or do anyway, so it’s a no brainer to include them. It’s just fun for Ella and Madi to be surprised when they pull out the card each day. And it simplifies our holidays to break the list down to daily activities.

Anatomy of a Hallway Vignette

One of my favorite parts of designing a space is creating a special vignette…in, along or at the end of a hallway.  These spaces are the perfect spot to step outside the box and create a display that is artful, electic, serene or simply a showcase space for things you love.

Lamps are always great as part of a Hallway Vignette.  Go big and bold to make an impact.

A mirror hung above a hallway table is a great way to create a vignette that draws you eye up!

An eclectic wall statement will make your HallwayVignette come to life.  Mixing shapes keeps the wall grouping interesting.

Who says asymmetrical is always best for a Hallway Vignette.  I love how the coat hooks draw your eye down the wall but still feel connected to the tabletop vignette.

Don’t forget that space under the table in your Hallway Vignette.  A single item or a grouping of items will add to the overall arrangement.

Group items you love or things that reflect our personality and interest.  A Hallway Vignette is a perfect place to get personal.

The simple addition of a chair can turn your Hallway Vignette into an intimate sitting area.

And, if you really want to think outside the box, replace a table with something fun and unexpected like a grouping of DIYchairs!

Now that Fall is here, it just might be the perfect time to give your Hallway Vignette a fresh look!

Happy Decorating!

Attention To Details

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone is set to make this week a great one!

For me, this week is all about the details…lots of big and little projects to cross off the list and all of them involve making the little things count.

Just like in design….

The addition of this small tray to corral perfume bottles not only give the bottles more impact but give the tabletop more style!

Tall candles create the reflection and the drama!  Shorter candles would be lost in the mix.

Cording, trim and nailheads add the finishing touch!

Even the detail of the chevron pattern bricks inside the firebox add to the style of this room.

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE STYLE?

About a week ago, I had lunch with a friend and one of the topics of conversation was about developing a personal style.

Since I have a fashion background, Saleema asked me how I’ve developed my personal style, and what exactly defines ones personal style.  The conversation got me thinking and I wanted to share my insights with you.

1.  How do I define my personal style and am I happy with it?

I truly believe that my personal style began developing itself at a very young age.  I was one of those girls that loved to create unique outfits, play dress up with my friends (boys and girls) and rummaged through my mom’s closet (which I still do to this day).  I was voted best dressed in high school and majored in fashion in college–fashion was and is in my blood.

Way back when, I identified elements of fashion that spoke to me, made me feel pretty, comfortable and stylish.  Those same elements define my style today and give me that same sense of self-confidence and personal identity it did when I was 5.

  •   Classic with an artistic flair–I follow fashion trends very closely but know that classic styles, silhouettes and details work best for me.  I love combining a pair of jeans with a stylish blazer or long sweater coat. Or, dressing up a pair of black pants with a bright cardigan or menswear inspired shirt.

  • Color–Bright, bold colors are one of my signature touches.  I know that color, versus neutrals  look good on me and more importantly bold colors make me feel good, which is reflected in how I carry myself and interact with other.    A great way to identify a fashion statement that works for you is to listen to what other have to say.  It never fails that when I wear red, coral, kelly green or canary yellow, I get compliments from others.

  • Jewelry–My outfit does not feel complete without jewelry.  For me, jewelry is the icing on the cake and is the way that I bring a look together.  I use jewelry to make a statement and gravitate towards classic silver pieces, big earrings, bold necklaces and diamonds (it’s my birthstone after all).  If you see me without any jewelry on, chances are I’m not feeling well.

  • Handbags–A girl can never have too many.  As with jewelry, a handbag to me completes an outfit.  While handbags are functional, I don’t look at them that way.  To me, a handbag it a true style statement and should compliment an outfit first and be a storage vehicle second.  On those occasions when I am wearing black or neutrals, I carry a handbag with color or shimmer to convey my personality.

2.  What are the components of great personal style?

To me,  great personal style is all about knowing yourself.

  • Knowing who you are–knowing what you like and don’t like is key to defining your personal style.  It’s not about trying to look like someone else, but about creating your own style, one that allows you to look your best,  always.

*   Knowing and loving your body–Whenever I’m at the mall I see loads of people wearing things that just aren’t right for them.  Wearing clothes that don’t fit or flatter your body is the quickest way to downgrade your personal style.  Take a day at the mall and try on lots of clothes.  Recognize what cuts and styles enhance your body and make you feel good.  These are the elements that will help you create your personal style.

  •  Knowing how to play up your best attributes–It’s true, shorter people (me) really should not wear cropped pants, and those of us with a well endowed chest should gravitate towards scoop necks and v-necks because they are more flattering on our neckline.  As you try on clothes, recognize which styles make you look taller, enhance your arms or legs and camouflage the areas you don’t like.  Clothes that look good on you, do make you feel good.

  •  Creating a signature look–Audrey, Michelle, Hillary, Jackie and my design idol  Sarah Richardson all have signature looks. It could be a classic white shirt, a pattern or a brand that helps you define your personal style.  Pick and item or two, and make it apart of fashion identity.

3.  How does one go about creating a personal style for themselves?

  • Find a role model–Look around… TV, magazines, friends and identify people whose fashion style you admire.  Your goal is not to copy them, but be inspired by their personal style.

  • Shop and Try on–If you ever watch What Not To Wear on tv, Clinton and Staci spend countless hours with the client trying things on.  This really is the best way to find and understand what fashions look best on you.  If you’re afraid of going it alone, most of the major department stores have a personal shopper department where someone will work with you, to create your wardrobe.

  • Mix high-end with low-end–When it comes to shopping, I am not a brand snob.  I buy items because they work for me, not because of the label or the price.  I love to invest in classic pieces and then round out my wardrobe with inexpensive stylish finds.  Some of my favorite pieces have come from Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Koh’s and the Nordstrom sale rack.  Your really dont’ have to invest a lot of money to create a great wardrobe.

  • Invest in basics–Just about every fashion personality out there has a list of wardrobe basics every girl needs.  My list of basics includes the following:

Black Pants–When I find a great fitting pair of black pants, I sometimes by two pair.  I also try to have several silhouettes of pants:  wider leg, slimmer fit.
Cardigans–As an essential wardrobe element, cardigans are great because they can be worn year round,  can be dressed up or down, and are figure flattering on just about everyone. Plus, I’m always cold.
Jeans–Ok, I admit shopping for jeans is not fun, but when it comes to jeans, finding a great fit is critical.  I vote for darker washes and straight legs.  And, I think you should own a “tall” pair for heels, and a “short” pair for flats.
Classic White Shirt–Nothing is more versatile than a white shirt.  Try building a wardrobe with several different styles.
Your Favorite Colors–Your wardrobe should definitely include pieces in the colors you love.  Guaranteed to make you feel good.
Black Pumps–Every girl needs a great pair of go-to black pumps–kitten heel and a higher heel.  I have a very narrow foot and slip-on shoes rarely fit me, so I tend to go for a black shoe with a slingback.

Black Pencil Skirt–While every girl needs a LBD in their closet, I think a black pencil skirts is another essential. It’s versatile, figure flattering and never goes out of style.

  • Personalize with accessories–Think of accessories as the ribbon on the package.  If you love gold jewelry, then make it apart of every outfit you wear.  If you love scarves, then build a great collection of scarves.  If shoes are your thing, then wear a killer pair every time your step out.

  • Become Known for something-One of my old sales reps loved patterned ballet flats.  Every time you’d see her, your eyes would gravitate towards the floor to check out her shoes.  Find a fashion element that you can become known for and make it apart of your signature style.

  • Tailor Your Clothing–I don’t like spending money on tailoring, but it really is the best way to get the best fit from your clothes.  And, at 5″2 I really don’t have a choice!

  • Create a Look Book–Fashion stylist Lloyd Boston is known for creating look books for his clients.  Once he creates a wardrobe for someone, he takes photos of the pieces and outfit combinations and puts them in a book. The book becomes a reference tool when you find yourself saying “I have nothing to wear”.  Try making a look book for yourself, not only a styling tool, but also as a guide to help you shop and build your wardrobe.

  • Organize and prettify your closet–Nothing is more daunting than walking into a unorganized and not-so pretty closet.  I have all my shoes in bins with photos on the outside and I recently switched all my clear plastic hangers to those slimline black hangers. They made my closet look better and gave me more room. Spend an afternoon getting your closet together, making it someplace you enjoy to visit.

So there you have it, my take on personal style… how to define it, how to create it and how to make it your own!

Now, let’s go shopping!
