Design Lessons From The 2017 Met Gala Fashions

Did you watch the Met Gala last weekend?  It is one of the most anticipated fashion events of year and always delivers amazing (and not-so-amazing) looks.

If you’re not familiar with the Met Gala, here’s a little about its history…

From 1948 to 1971, the benefit wasn’t pegged as an exhibition, and was held off-site at the Waldorf Astoria or the Rainbow Room. Guests, mostly New York society indulged in fine dining and were entertained by “skits, raffles, and pageants of models in historic costume. In 1972 New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its doors for the Met Gala when former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland joined as a consultant. Vreeland curated some of the most ambitious and heavily publicized exhibitions and used the gala as an opportunity to inaugurate them. Today the annual invitation-only fundraiser hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour benefits the museum’s Costume Institute, and serves as a launch party for its spring exhibition.

The 2017 exhibition is dedicated to 74-year-old Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, one of fashion’s most revered creative visionaries. The exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night and guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.

Now that you know a bit about the gala, here’s a look at some of the 2017 fashion statements and what they can teach you about interior design.

Fashion Trend: Seed Bead Jewelry

I’ve been making jewelry ever since I was a kid.  After I got the hang of it, I tried my hand at making a necklace using seed beads. #majorfail   In fact if you were to look through my jewelry supply box today,  you’d see an entire case of seed beads that I’ve collected over the years.

If you’re not familiar with seed beads, they are the tiny beads you see on those popular tassel earrings everyone is wearing, those beads on decorative pillows and the ones on those trendy summer tunic tops that are in all the stores.

Even though they are tiny, seed beads are great because of the intricate designs and beautiful color combinations they create.

During Spring New York Fashion week, I noticed seed bead jewelry as part of several designer runway shows and I’m glad to know that this jewelry style has become a hot trend.  One day I may pull out my stash of seed beads and try making a necklace again but until then I think I’ll shop for some seed bead jewelry.

Etsy is another great source for handmade seed bead jewelry and Biulu Artisan Boutique has one of the best selections of intricate designs I’ve ever seen.  The shop sells necklaces, bracelets, earrings along with complete jewelry sets.  Each piece  is handmade in western Mexico and the designs are inspired by many Native American groups including Iroquois, Cherokee, Aztec, Maya and Inca.

I also loved reading the story of how this shop started, how the business has grown and now supports many of the people in their community.  You can read the Biulu story here.

Two thumbs up for the weekend!

Now that we’ve sprung forward and the first official day of spring is just days away, I feel like its time to make the switch in my closet from my winter wardrobe to my spring wardrobe.  It’s also time to take stock of what I own and head out to buy a few new fashion pieces.  On my shopping list this spring are boho inspired looks.  Boho style is a lot like my design style–eclectic, whimsical and full of personality so it’s no wonder I like this look.

Here are a few pieces I’ve spotted while shopping the web.

Kitchens–Easy Ways to UpStyle Your Kitchen

EASY WAYS TO UP-STYLE YOUR KITCHEN

Given the amount of time we all spend in the kitchen,  it’s one of the rooms in your home that you should love.  Loving your kitchen is more that liking how it functions for you and your family, it also involves how it looks and feels.  After years of use, a kitchen can sometimes become dull and lifeless and before you know it the space has lost the style it once had.

When it comes to the investment you have in your home, kitchen remodel are one of the best investments you can make but they can be expensive.  So what are you to do when you want to add the life and energy back into your kitchen but want to do that on a budget?  You employ one or more of these design tricks.

  •  Paint Something

Paint is definitely the easiest way to change the look and feel of any room in your home and there are several ways paint can transform a kitchen.  Your  kitchen island is a prime candidate for paint and painting it give you a great opportunity to infuse a color accent into the space.  If you want to go one step further, consider painting your cabinets.  You don’t have to paint all of them, paint just the uppers or lowers which will add a dramatic design contrast.  And a final and easy paint option is to paint the walls.

  • Open Up The Shelving

The trend of open shelving is still a hot one and for good reason.  Open shelving creates visual depth and can make your space feel larger while providing visual impact and interest.  Open shelving can be achieved by taking the doors off of cabinets, replacing solid doors with glass front doors or installing floating shelving in place of traditional cabinets.  The only downside of open shelving is that you have to keep the shelves looking neat and tidy.

  • Re-Accessorize Your Countertops

I know kitchen counters can become a drop zone of all types of things and that combined with small appliances, your kitchen can easily become a hot mess.  The easiest way to keep your counters neat and organized is by creating groupings of items at key spots along the countertop instead of allowing every inch of counter space to be filled.  Store what appliances you can behind closed doors and then use baskets and tray to corral tems out on display.  As you go about re-accessorizing your counters, think about the types of accessories you use.  Use items that create a style or color theme which will add style to your space.

  • Accent With A Rug

Don’t limit your rug shopping to traditional kitchen rugs. Look at fashion rugs as an option for your kitchen.  Rugs are a great way to infuse pattern and color, and they can add energy and style to your kitchen.  And don’t skimp on the size of rug you use–where the space allows, go big or use multiple rugs to anchor and define different zones within the kitchen.

  • Up-Style With Lighting

Lighting is one area where you can really have fun when decorating your kitchen.  Go big and bold, hang a unique fixture and consider a countertop lamp to add accent lighting.  If your space can accommodate a larger light fixture, look at outdoor lighting as an option since many outdoor lantern styles have the heft and scale that can work in a larger space.

Define Your Design Style

Design Style.001

I taught a design workshop right before Christmas that focused on seasonal décor and fashion.  During the workshop I presented decorating tips and design ideas to inspire those in attendance with their design and personal style.  As I look back on the workshop I recognize that the ideas presented ran the gamment from casual and country to chic and traditional.  It’s always my goal to present a range of ideas that anyone can identify with, since everyone’s style is different.

The workshop also got me thinking about people who don’t have a clear vision of what their style is and in-turn find it challenging to decorate their homes.  If you fall into that category, this blog post is for you.  I’m outlining the steps you can take to analyze and define your design style so decorating becomes a joy and not a job.

Statment Style: Necklaces and Styling Tips

Statement Necklace Styling

via

I, like most women have a thing for jewelry. My particular crush is on bold statement pieces that have lots of personality and wow.

During the cold winter months, statement necklaces are a great way to accessorize layered clothing and bulkier pieces like a sweater or blazer.  A statement necklace can add instant impact to any outfit, causal or dressy.

Here’s a round-up of a few statement necklaces I just discovered and styling tips on how to wear them.

How To Style A Statement Necklace

♦  The chunkier the clothing, the chunkier the necklace–make sure your necklace can hold its own against the texture and visual weight of  your sweater or jacket.

♦  Mix it up–don’t be afraid to wear multiple necklaces together to create your own signatures statement style.

♦  Go for the hi-low mix–a statement necklace can work just as well with a causal sweater and jeans as it can with a cashmere cardigan and tailored slacks.

♦  Layer with necklaces–wear statement necklaces to fill in an open neckline on a v-neck sweater or button up shirt.

♦ Statement necklace and collared shirts are a great combo–wear choker or shorter length necklaces under a collared shirt to create polished look.  Statement necklaces look great with turtlenecks too!
