My Recent Thrifting Finds–Thrill of the hunt!

Happy Thursday friends.  This week has flown by but as promised, I’m back to share my latest thrifting finds with you.  Last week the hubs and I shopped Scott Antique Market and I popped into one of my favorite flea markets.

At Scott, I stopped by to see ‘my guy’ as I affectionately call one of the dealers. His treasures aren’t displayed in a fancy way but are simply strewn across tables for you to rummage through. It’s definitely the thrill of the hunt in his space.

As I walked from table to table I didn’t see much at first but then I came across this blue and white jar.  It already own another one just like this and since they are both missing their lids I’m planning to use them as flower vases.

Another great find were these gorgeous English Ironstone transferware plates. I paid $15 for the set of 8 which were all in perfect condition. These will be perfect for a fall or Thanksgiving tablescape.

These art deco Black Tiara Glass Candleholders were just $5.00. They will be fun to use with my black and white dinnerware when setting the table for entertaining.

.This last piece I scored at a flea market/thrift store I shop at often.  It was sitting outside with a couple of small tables stacked on top of it but it immediately caught my attention. Hello gorgeous bamboo table for only $30!!! The table was in great shape and just needed a quick cleaning. Right now I have it on my side of the bed as a night stand but I have a couple of other places it might work too.

Behind The Blog: Cheryl Luckett & Dwell By Cheryl

dwell-by-cheryl

I’m so excited to share this interior designer and blogger with you as part of my Behind The Blog series.

Cheryl Luckett is a Charlotte, North Carolina based interior designer that juggles a full-time Human Resources career with a blossoming interior design business.  I first came to know Cheryl through her design blog, Dwell By Cheryl and was captivated by the beautiful and budget-friendly spaces we creates for her clients.  And she is one of my thrifting soul-mates finding the most amazing pieces at thrift stores, flea markets and Habitat for Humanity.

I had the pleasure of meeting Cheryl a few years ago at the Design Bloggers Conference and I have to tell you that she is a true Southern Belle with an engaging and warm spirit about her.  Sit back and enjoy my conversation with Cheryl…

Cheryl, you have done what many aspiring designers want to do and that is build your design business while working full-time in another career? Can you share a few tips for anyone wanting to turn their ‘day’  job into their dream job?

My best advice would be to simply “DO IT!” I receive countless inquiries from folks wanting to know how I balance my business, school and my current career, but honestly I don’t have a good answer. All I can really say is that I committed to doing it and I did it. Often what separates those who succeed and those who don’t is the ability to keep going. I made the sacrifices, I put in the time and I stuck with it. The fact that I’m single without children certainly adds to the flexibility that I have, but like everyone, I have responsibilities as well. It hasn’t been easy. I will say that I began my business as if it were my sole source of income not as if it were my “side hustle”. This meant making investments in learning, photography, networking, branding, marketing, etc. very early on. This helped to create a professional image and put me in the ranks of those working full-time in design even if I wasn’t at the time.

Cheryl Luckett--Dwell By Cheryl

In addition to your design business, you write your blog, Dwell by Cheryl. Tell us about the blog and what readers can expect from your posts.

My blog began as a way for me to get my name out. It focused on projects I completed in my own home and inspiration and ideas for creating a beautiful home on a modest budget. Lately however, the blog has become more of an extension of my business. It’s a way to see the behind the scenes work that I do to pull a client project together from start to finish. It still occasionally features my own home improvement projects but, for the most part, it’s focused on design trends and client work.

What do you love most about being an interior designer?

I love helping my clients love and better utilize their homes. I absolutely love coming home each day. There’s a sense of comfort that I feel when I open the door. My goal is to create that same sense for my clients. It’s extremely rewarding when that happens.

I’d love to learn more about your design philosophy so tell us what three design elements you think every home needs?

(1.) Layers – I’m in no way a minimalist. I think that a home should envelop you. Layers help to achieve this. From drapery to rugs, to art and accessories, it’s the details that make a house a home. (2.) Something old– I’m known for my love of vintage furnishings and décor. I think they add history to a space. I also love them because they can help stretch the budget. Everything old is new again and many vintage items are totally on-trend today. Utilizing the originals in your design can provide better quality without sacrificing of-the-moment style. (3.) Pattern– I’ve become a bit of a pattern junkie. I love the way patterns play with one another to add visual interest to a space. There’s something so “designer” about a space that has a great mix of pattern. It’s not always easy to do, but when done well, it totally makes a space.

When it comes to decorating with color, I believe every designer has a favorite color palette.  What’s colors do you love to incorporate in your projects and why?

I love incorporating neutrals as my backdrop. I love taupe. It’s one of those colors that walks the fine line between gray and beige. It also works so well with so many other colors. While I love neutrals as the foundation for a color scheme, I’m obsessed with pops of color. They add life to a space.

Cheryl Luckett--Dwell By Cheryl

Where do you find your design inspiration?

I love studying other designers work. I comb through Houzz in the evenings, soaking in every detail. It’s a great place for inspiration. I also love textiles. When I experience a creative block I’ll take a trip to a fabric retailer or wholesaler to get inspired by the patterns and color options available.

Cheryl Luckett--Dwell By Cheryl

Like me, you are an avid thrift store and vintage shopper. What items are always on your shopping list?

Interesting framed art, mirrors, brass planters and animal figurines are among my favorites. I essentially built my business on my ability to stretch a dollar until it hollers. Thrifting with a great eye for the “good stuff” is one way I’m able to create spaces for my clients, even if they have modest budgets.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My style is definitely transitional. I love traditional elements mixed with more modern pieces. You can also expect to ALWAYS see a bit of vintage in my projects.

If you could lunch with any famous woman, who would it be and what burning question would you want to ask them?

I’m obsessed with Canadian designer Sarah Richardson. I’d love to pick her brain on how she approaches the design process. Her interiors are beyond beautiful and I’d take any pearls of wisdom from her.

What’s your favorite way to unwind?

I’m a wine lover, so a good glass of red on my front porch swing flipping through the latest issue of a shelter magazine is heaven to me.

Cheryl Luckett--Dwell By Cheryl

I always like to throw a quirky question into the mix so tell us about your favorite things…

Favorite Paint Color: SW Balanced Beige
Favorite Decorative Accessory: Brass animals make me happy. : )
Favorite Design Magazine: House Beautiful
Favorite Styling Tip: Greenery adds so much life to an interior space.
Favorite Vacation Destination: Wine country. (Any of them)

Personally and professionally, share a few items on your bucket list?

I will own a mountain home!
I’m dying to go to Rome. It’s likely this Art History class that has me itching to go.
Well, if I’m honest, getting married would be nice. : )

Didn’t I tell you Cheryl’s spirit (and design work) was captivating?  Thank you Cheryl for sharing your projects, inspiration and dreams with us.  I can’t wait to see what amazing things will unfold for you and your business in the years ahead.

P.S.  Just a few days ago, Cheryl received some amazing news and learned that her home office space was one of the rooms featured in the new design book, Southern Space for Beautiful Living.  You’ll definitely want to add a copy of the book to your shelves.

Thrifting Finds–All About The Brass

Thrift Store

On Valentine’s Day the hubs took me out for a day of thrifting.  Lately when we’ve gone thrifting we’ve shopped at my favorite antique stores and flea markets so this time around we decided to stop by several of our local Goodwill stores.

Shopping Goodwill is definitely hit or miss experience.  Sometimes you can score some great pieces but more often than not, the shelves are filled with undesirable pieces.  I’ve also noticed that over the last year or two, Goodwill seems to be increasing their prices so the deals you once could find are harder to come across now.

The stars and planets must have aligned for Valentine’s Day because I found several awesome brass pieces and a few blue and white gems.

♦♦♦

This tulip shaped brass planter was in perfect condition and I’m thinking I’ll put a maiden hair fern or orchid in it.

thumb_IMG_1666_1024

I also found these brass containers and will most likely sell these in my Etsy shop.

These blue and white tea cups were too cute to pass up especially for less than $3.00.

I love this Chinoiserie blue and white flower frog/brick and can image it filled with tulips.  After doing some research I discovered this piece was made in Portugal and was designed for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

And I scored these petite brass pots for .50 cents and think they’d be great for succulents.

While I was thrifting, I also picked up a few pieces that I’m sending off to a fellow blogger as part of the Ciburbanity #SwapItLikeItsHot blog swap.  I super excited to be participating along with a slew of other bloggers and can’t wait to share it all with you in April.

Happy hunting!

Product + Inspiration: Blue and White Ginger Jars

Ginger Jars---William Sonoma Home

via william sonoma home

Good design is timeless and a perfect example of that is the blue and white ginger jars.  Ginger jars are identified by their high-shoulders, rounded shapes, small mouths, and domed lids that often continue the piece’s exterior decoration all the way up to the finial. Ginger jars were initially used to store and transport spices, hence their name, but since the 19th century they have been used chiefly as decorative objects.

Although the patterns, styles and colors available in ginger jars is limitless, the classic blue and white ginger jar has become the most mainstream of the styles.  These days you can find ginger jars at flea markets, thrift shops and even big box discount stores like Ross.  This beautiful blue and white lidded temple jar is just one of several styles available from William Sonoma Home.

NINE Party Place Settings You Can DIY

When it comes to entertaining, creating beautiful tablescapes and place settings is an essential part of the decor.  You table decor can be elaborate and over-the-top or simple and classic, and the best part is that there are so many beautiful place settings you can make by hand with a few basic crafting supplies.  Here’s a round-up of inspiration photos and the steps to DIY these looks for yourself.

Slide1

No. 1  Dollie Name Card

When it comes to crafting, I don’t think dollies get the credit they deserve.  Paper dollies come in different shapes and colors and can easily be turned into a vintage inspired name tag that can adorn the center of the plate. If you’re using glass plates, place the dollie under the plate and it can stay there throughout the dinner service.

Get the Look:

Paper Dollies (this site has a great selection of colors and shapes)
(to create a keepsake paper favor, I recommend using a vintage cloth dollie instead of paper)
Ultra Fine Sharpie Pen

f27ca4a7ea8e8adfde862333b75215c3

No. 2  Gold Rimmed Plate & Napkin Ring

Turning a clear glass plate into an elegant serving piece is as easy as gluing gold beads around the rim.  And to compliment the plate, how about making a gold ball napkin ring?

Get the Look:

Gold Beads  (use E6000 glue to secure the beads to the plate rim (E6000 is not food safe so only use for the plates for decor or as a layering plate)
Plastic Belt Buckles (look for vintage buckles at flea markets or you can find them on Etsy)

0cfa9aff4fbda0d992b5021e3dd49603

No. 3  Clip Board Menu Card & Place Card

I love this idea not only because I love clipboards but because it is just too darn cute.  Pick up clipboards at the dollar store, spray paint them to accent your table and clip on the menu and a name card.  If you want to use the clipboard as a party favor, I recommend adding a monogrammed pencil that can go with it.

Get the Look:

Small Clipboard with open clip, Small Clipboard with closed clip (I buy almost all my clipboards from thrift stores so keep an eye out for them when shopping)
Personalized Pencils (better quality), (cheap price)

a325498e5f3b9cdeec430a69ddc18bde

No. 4  Striped Plates

This is a really fun and easy way to add a pop of color to your party table. All it takes is a little acrylic paint (you choose the colors) and you’ll have place settings that pop.

Get the Look:

Clear Glass Plate  (in order to serve food off the plate, you’ll be painting the underside of the plate so make sure the surface is smooth)
Frog Tape (if you really want to get crafty use their Shape Tapes)
Acrylic Paint–you can pick from high-gloss, metallic, pearlized, glitter or satin finishes  (this paint is even dishwasher safe)

53ccfe0d5f80fe5a653b0fb5c800f84d

No. 5  Decoupage Plates

Decoupaging your own plates is a great way to create inexpensive decorative plates.  Just about any paper embellishment can be adhered to the plate surface, to fit with any entertaining theme you have going.

Get the Look:

Ceramic Plates ( check thrift stores, especially if you’re OK with a mis-matched look)
Decal or Paper Embellishment (you can also find these at Michaels or JoAnn Fabric)
Decoupage Glue (this is water-based, non-toxic, food safe and top rack dishwasher safe)

91c087db684c76eb533b9b0b23ad46a7

No. 6 Chalkboard Plates

This is one place setting idea that you will be able to use over and over again and mix with any decor theme throughout the year. Painting plates with chalkboard paint is super easy and a great way to personalize your table.

Get the Look:

Plates (this project definitely calls for thrift store plates since the entire plate will be covered up–you don’t need anything fancy)
Chalkboard Paint ( I like to use paint in a can but you can also use chalkboard spray paint) (tips on applying chalkboard paint)

599f87a99d61737247e9d87a1a7e9bdc

No. 7 Personalized Plates

I love all things personalized and this place setting is right up my alley, especially for a holiday party, special celebration or even a New Years shindig.  If you have good penmanship you can create this look by hand using paint or a sharpie, or for a more temporary fix you can get crafty with your Circut machine or use craft stickers.

Get the Look:

Solid Colored Plates (as long as the plate has a solid colored center you can use it)
Alphabet Stickers (the options are endless) or your Circut Explore

e0191c9feadb3e9ac7613495982516b8

No. 8 Painted Plates

Ok, you could go out and buy plates in different colors and save yourself some work but DIYing is much more fun.  I love the idea of combining plates in different colors to create a bold color theme for your table.  You can use a single color family or vary each place setting for a more colorful table.

Get the Look:

Clear Glass Plates (paint your dinner plate one color and the salad plate another, and paint the backs of the plates so the food surface is usable)
If you want to add a metallic rim, use a Sharpie to color in the rim before painting the rest of the plate
Glass Paint (dishwasher safe)

26f0533a3183aae8126e97fc5853893d

No. 9 Glittered Charger Plates

How many times have you passed up scratched plastic charger plates at Goodwill?  Me, about a thousand.  The next time I see some of these I will definitely be getting them so I can DIY a set of beautiful glittered chargers.

Get the Look:

Plastic Charger Plates (if you can’t find any at the thrift store, Michaels carries them so look for a sale)
Glittered Paint (paint the backs of the plate and you’ll need to seal them with an acrylic sealer to make them hand-washable)
You can also use a glittered spray paint (I’ve heard this stuff is not easy to work with)
or
decoupage loose glitter onto the plate (mix glitter with decoupage glue and paint onto plate)  If you do this you’ll definitely want to seal with a sealer to prevent having glitter everywhere

6b6b16c46937fed9414c211a3f9f3406

I don’t know about you but I’m ready to get crafty and have a party!

So, which of these DIY party place settings is your favorite.
