The Merry & Bright Holiday Home Tour takes place over next three weeks with today being the first in the series. We’ll be sharing more holiday cheer on Dec. 7th and Dec. 14th so mark your calendars.

Enough with the details…let’s get this party started!

Today I’m showing you my Christmas tree as well as a couple of sneak peeks at some of the other holiday decor that you’ll see next week.

If you remember a few weeks back I shared the inspiration for my holiday decor.  It was this Poinsettia themed wrapping paper from Paper Mart.

2016-confettistyle-christmas-inspiration-001

Every year I change my tree decor and this year I decided to go with a theme that is perfect for the Merry & Bright Holiday Home Tour. The red, pink and green in the paper set the tone for my tree decor with a few additional colors thrown in to spice things up.  I’m calling my tree the Merry & Bright tree.

ConfettiStyle Christmas Tree--2016

During the day the bright colors make me smile and in the evening, all lit up the tree is just as beautiful.

ConfettiStyle Christmas Tree--2016

Since the background of my inspirational wrapping paper is black, I decided to use two different ribbons on the tree.  One is a black and white plaid and the other is a two-sided red and green satin.

ConfettiStyle Christmas Tree--2016

To keep things simple, I used only solid colored ornaments in different colors, sizes and finishes. And I layered the ornaments from the inside out to give the tree a full look.

Design Guide: Tips for Trimming Your Christmas Tree

Christmas Decor Theme by ConfettiStyle

When to put up your Christmas tree has become a big debate these days.  Some people (like me) put their tree up early to savor every single bit of the holiday season.  And on the other side of the fence there are people (like my brother) that wait until Thanksgiving to put up their tree.  I can appreciate both viewpoints but the one thing I do know is that anyone that puts up a Christmas tree wants it to look great.

I’ve been decorating trees professionally for years, first at my home decor store and then as part of my design business for clients. Over the years I’ve learned a lot about the art of decorating  Christmas trees. My latest Design Guide, Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree shares my tree decorating secrets so you can decorate your Christmas tree like a pro.

Product + Inspiration: Decor Meets Christmas Tree

When I teach a holiday decorating workshop, the question always comes up about whether your tree decor needs to match your room decor.  My response is NO but for a truly cohesive look its best if your everyday decor inspires your tree decor.

Take a cue from the tips you use to decorate a room in your home.  You start with one or two key elements (art, rug, curtains) and use those as the building blocks to create the overall design.  When it comes to decorating your Christmas tree, find inspiration within your decor and use that to build the theme for your tree.

Here are 3 holiday tree designs and the accessory and furniture pieces that could have inspired them…

to-all-2

Product + Inspiration: Decor meets Christmas Tree

This is the Christmas tree I’d create if my inspiration was colorful and bohemian inspired space.  The gold accents play off of the gold finish on the furniture and the bold mix of colors tie back to the textiles within the room. During the holidays, sparkly details are a must and a grouping of beautiful mercury glass candle holders would inspired the ornaments, ribbon and giftwrap I’d use.

Shop these items:  Embroidered Floral Bouquet Throw Pillow // Gold Cole 3-Tier Rolling Bar Cart
Sabyasachi Print Round Tray // Mercury Glass Candle Holders //Tufted Ottoman

Product + Inspiration: Decor meets Christmas Tree

If I were decorating a Christmas tree based on decor that included classic holiday colors like red, white and green, it would look like this. The varying shades green found in the jars and artwork,  along with whimsical details like the fur pillow would inspire the ornaments and ribbon used on the tree.

Shop these items: Charlotte 3-Drawer Campaign Chest // Red Rhododendron Framed Prints // Oversized Wine Bottle
Reese Velvet Ottoman // Mongolian Faux Fur Pillow

A neutral color palette relies on texture, a variety of finishes and a subtle graduation of color to bring it to life.  This elegant and glam Christmas tree would be inspired by a mix of gold and silver decorative elements, antique surfaces, lots of visual texture and shimmery finishes.

Shop these items: Carys Hurricane Table Lamp // Diana Accent Table // Moravia Wall Mirror

So the question still remains–which comes first, the chicken or the egg.  In the case of holiday decor, take a look around your home and let the pieces you live with everyday inspire you!

10 Tips for Organizing Your Christmas Decor

Organizing Christmas Decor.001.jpeg.001.jpeg.001

Happy New Year.  I’m really excited about the year ahead and will share more about that tomorrow but for today I must talk about a big project I have ahead of me.

We finally got all of our Christmas decor taken down and in the garage.  And when I say in the garage, I don’t mean stored away neatly with all the bins stacked to Martha Stewart perfection, I mean sitting the middle of the garage.

The bins aren’t going to stay that way because I made the decision that this year is the year of purging and organizing.  I’m getting rid of things I haven’t touched in ages, don’t use and don’t want or need anymore and I’m starting with my Christmas decor.

As someone who owned their own home decor store for 8+ years and changes up their holiday theme each year, I’ve amassed quite a collection of holiday items and it’s time to free myself from the stuff.

Organizing my Christmas decor (and garage while I’m at it) isn’t going to happen overnight, I suspect it will take a weekend or two to get it in order.  Since I’m preparing to tackle this massive project, I thought I’d share my organizing tips on how I’m going to get the space in tip, top shape.

♦♦♦

TIP #1–Sort items by color and keep like items together.  This is one thing I haven’t always done a good job at so I’m going to focus on doing it this year.  Not only will it make finding items easier but it will also make it easier for me to pull together my tree theme in each.

Tip #2–Store holiday decor in plastic bins.  I’ve always used plastic bins to store the majority of my Christmas decor and I can’t tell you how easy this make organizing your storage space.  I’ve got an assorted variety of plastic bins (some see through and others not) so we are investing in some new bins this year.  I perfect see-through bins for my Christmas decor although I must say that the solid colored bins are a bit thicker and more sturdy.

Plastic under bed storage bins works great for storing garland and can be stacked to save space.  Label each bin with the location of where the garland goes in the house.

Plastic Under Bed Storage

Tip #3–Label your bins.  I’ve done this a bit but after years of accumulating stuff, the contents in my bins no longer matches the labels.  When listing the content of each bin, be as specific as possible. Another tip is to take pictures of the items inside the bin and then print and tape the pictures to the inside of the bin lid for each reference.

**  I’m going to use these removable labels and handwrite what’s inside each bin.  The labels will then go on the outside of each storage bin
**removable labels make it each to change out the bins as needed and keeps your storage looking tidy
** Wal-Mart has some of the best prices and best selection on storage bins

Labeled Storage Bins

Tip #4–Pack with care.  When you pack away your Christmas decor, take the time to protect the items you own.  I use tissue paper or newsprint between layers of ornaments and recently came across this idea of using coffee filters as individual ornaments cups.  250 coffee filters at Costco for $5.99.

Ornaments and Coffee Filters

 via

You can also use cardboard beverage trays to hold ornaments inside your bins.    You can buy a 75 count, 4 cups trays at Sam’s Club for $14.48.

Ornaments in Beverage holders

via

And here’s another idea that I love…plastic cups glued to cardboard to hold individual ornaments. This storage method is a bit time-consuming but once done, it’s a great way to protect ornaments from breakage.

Tip #6–Store Wreaths on Hangers.  A great way to store your Christmas wreaths is by tying them onto a hanger and covering the wreath with a clear dry cleaning bag.  The hanger makes it easy to hang a wreath from a nail or hook.  And if you have multiple wreaths, put a hanging bar (clothesline style ) in your garage or storage room and hang all the wreaths together.

Wreath in bag

Tip #7–Detangle the lights.  There is nothing that makes me crazier than lights that have become a jumbled mess.  A quick fix is to wrap your Christmas lights around a piece of cardboard.  The cardboard will allow you to stack your lights, maximize storage space and it makes it easy to test each cord each season when you get ready to decorate. This storage idea will also work for beaded garland and ribbon.

Lights wrapped around cardboard

Tips #8–Keep wrapping paper accessible and protected.  I buy a lot of gift wrap in generic patterns so it can be used year round but if you buy paper specific to Christmas or any other holiday for that matter, try storing your rolls in clear garment bags.  The garment bags will hold multiple rolls and can be easily stored in the back of a closet.

** you can pick up clear garment bags at the dollar store

Tip #9–Vacumm pack your holiday pillows.  If you have holiday pillows with removable covers, remove the covers and store them folded in a drawers or storage bin.  You can then use the pillow inserts for other pillows throughout the year.  If the pillows don’t have removable covers, think about storing them in vacuum packed bags which will keep them fresh and protected and save you a ton of space.

**  you can pick up Space Bags at Walgreens

vacumm packed

Tip #10–Store holiday signs and wall decor under the bed.  Plastic or cloth under-bed storage containers are a great way to store holiday wall plaques and decor.  I bought a couple of these bags from Container store and love them.  They are large and durable and the handle makes it easy to pull out from under the bed.

Underbed storage

Wish me luck as we tackle the garage.  I’ll be sure to share before and after photos once it’s all done. Stay tuned!

If you have any Christmas decor organizing tips to share, please do because I’d love to know.

6 Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree Like a Pro (Throwback Thursday)

It’s Throwback Thursday so I’m republishing one of my most popular holiday how-to post…

How To Decorate Your Christmas Tree Like A Pro!

38a785d13480eae2bb06b7cc376afc00

source

When my store was open, one of the most attended workshops I did was called Decorate Your Christmas Tree Like a Pro.  While everyone has their own style when it comes to decorating their tree, everyone also wants to know the tips and techniques that designers used to create those over the top trees.  Well, today I’m going to let you in on our secrets….

1.  DEVELOP A THEME–Every great design project starts with a theme, even decorating a Christmas tree.  Having a theme will ensure all the elements work together and that the tree has major impact.  Your theme can be as simple as decorating with only red ornaments or as elaborate as creating a rustic yet elegant lodge themed tree. And, even if your tree is decorated with different ornaments collected over the years, that too can serve as your theme!  Whatever your theme is, it will serve as the foundation for  your overall  decorating plan.

2.  LIGHTS FIRST–Lighting a tree is time-consuming, but doing it right makes all the difference in how your tree will look in the end.

*  Start at the top of your tree and wrap the lights from the inside trunk towards the outer tips of a branch.  Once one branch is covered, create two or three big loops of lights on that same branch back towards the trunk.  Move to the next branch and repeat the process.  Continue working your way around the tree, covering all the branches.  Don’t forget to plug your lights in periodically to make sure they all work and the all the branches are covered well.

*  You can adjust the density of the lights by wrapping the lights closer together or further apart.

3.  ADD RIBBON OR FABRIC–While most people add ribbon to their trees, fabric is a great alternative.  Ribbon, bows or fabric pieces will provide a backdrop for our ornaments and can be added to your tree in several different ways.  One method is to drape the ribbon from top to bottom, tucking it into the tree at intervals.  This will create peaks and valleys and create added dimension to your tree decor.   Another great trick is to layer several different ribbons together and creating big loops with cascading tails (see top photo).

If you are using bows on your tree, make sure the size and scale of the bow is in keeping with the overall size of the tree….8 to 10 medium size bows on a 9 ft. tree is enough!

4.  ADD DIMENSIONAL PICS OR SPARYS–This one element will do more for your tree than anything else will.  Take glitter pics, feather stems or floral stems and place them around your tree randomly. Not only are your creating layers with your tree, but you are adding texture and dimension.  On large trees, several styles of pic and be used together while on smaller trees it is best to use a single pic style in mass.

5.  LAYER, LAYER, LAYER–Now it’s time to start adding ornaments.  Don’t just place your ornaments on the surface of the tree, layer your ornaments within the tree branches.  Place solid colored ornaments deep into the tree and hang the more colorful and ornate ornaments on the tips of the branches.

And remember,
Vary the shapes of sizes of your ornaments
Vary the color tones, using shiny ornaments along with matt and textured finishes
Adding solid color ornaments will help ground the tree and create an element of consistency within your theme
Cluster small ball ornaments together with a wire and hang them in groupings for added impact

6.  THE TOPPER–The top of your tree should really make a statement.  Create a unique topper using pics and flower stems, several large bows put together or go add a whimsical element that supports your theme.  If you have a traditional topper, use pics at the base of the topper to frame it.

A few other tricks of the trade…

*  Use ornament spinners to add visual impact to the tree.  These little gems plug into one of the light sockets and spin lightweight ornaments.

*  Curl the tips of your artificial tree  to give it a whimsical touch.

Inspiration: Christmas Entertaining With A Color Twist!

Gold Reindeer with Faux Fur

If you can’t tell from recent post here on the blog, I’m really getting in the Christmas spirit.  Today I’m bringing you an inspiration board I created for a colorful holiday party.

The concept for this party was a casual, chic party table with a twist on traditional Christmas colors.

Christmas Entertaining with a Color Twist.001.jpeg.001

Here’s a look at each item and tips for creating your own festive holiday table!

Whenever I can’t find cloth table linens to fit a theme, I turn to wrapping paper. With just about any design and color option available, wrapping paper is a cost-effective and simple way to dress your table.  TABLE RUNNER:  Snowy Tree Wrapping Paper
Most table settings I create incorporate a charger plate.  Chargers help to add impact to a table and are also part of the layering that every table setting needs.  I recommend you buy a set of gold, silver and red chargers so you have colors that will work with every table setting your can imagine.  CHARGER PLATES:  Gold Charger with Fluted Edge     *  (my favorite gold charger design)
One of the basic tabletop items I think everyone should own is a set of classic white dinnerware. White plates will give you tons of flexibility to mix and match patterned salad/dessert plates and bowls.    DINNER PLATES:  Round White Dinnerware  *(you can’t beat the price of these plates)
Novelty salad plates are an easy way to bring pattern to the table for the holidays or for any season.  I love to pair square salad plates with round dinner plates for visual interest.   SALAD/DESSERT PLATES:  Green and White Chalkboard Christmas Plates
Entertaining is so much easier when you have the right serving pieces.  A tiered stand can be used in lots of different ways and works just as well on a table as it does on a buffet.  SERVING STAND:  Gold Two Tier Stand
Holiday entertaining by candlelight is a must in my book and these Christmas tree shaped candles are the perfect accent to compliment the paper runner design. CENTERPIECE DECORPearlized Christmas Tree Candle *(these would make a fun hostess gift too)
Gold flatware is just one of the elements that helps to add a touch of glam to this tablescape and it ties in with the other gold accent pieces which helps to create the theme.  FLATWARE:  Gold Flatware *(I also love the design of this silver flatware set)
I like the idea of placing wine in an ice bucket versus placing the bottle on the table.  When not used to hold wine, the bucket could hold flowers or even be used as a serving bowl of a salad or bread.  ICE BUCKET:  Hexagon Ice Bucket
Colorful glasses are a great investment and will add that bold pop of color that every table needs.  These glasses accent the green in the runner and salad plates so that the table has three different pops of the key accent color. STEMWARE:  Green Wine Glasses  *(HomeGoods always has a great selection of colorful glassware)
Pattern mixing is key to bringing your holiday table to life. The gingham plaid dinner napkins provide a great contrast to the oversized pattern of the paper design and further highlight the navy color.  LINENS:  Blue Check Dinner Napkins *(these would be easy to DIY if you can’t find your color)
When it comes to a centerpiece, I use items that will add height, style and a unique touch to the table.  These gold reindeer do all of that along with adding that glamorous touch the decor called for.  DECOR:  Gold Reindeer Decor *(the fur collar is removable so you could change the look from year to year)

Chalkboard Christmas Plates

So when it comes to setting your holiday table, do you have any tricks or tips you use?  Leave me a comment and let me know.

I’ll be sharing my own holiday table soon.  Stay tuned.

The Look For Less–Monogram Christmas Ornament

Alaphbet Ornament Tree

Alaphabet Tree2
via

It’s beginning to look a bit like Christmas around my house.  I’ve pulled the Christmas pillows out, started decorating here and there and will get my tree set up and decorated this weekend.  If you’ve read my blog for a while you know that I change my tree theme each year.  A majority of the decorations are pieces that I already own but a few new pieces get added each year.

Two of the key components on my tree will be monogrammed ornaments and lots of red which was partly inspired by the tree decor above.

Last year I purchased a few of these beautiful blown glass alphabet ornaments from Pottery Barn at $7.50 each and had plans to add a few more to my collection.

glass-alphabet-ornaments-c

But yesterday I stumbled across the almost identical monogram ornament at JoAnn’s on sale for $3.99.  While the details aren’t exactly the same, these ornaments will still give me the look and feel I want the tree to have.

I’ll be sharing my completed Christmas tree decor with you on Dec. 2nd as part of a blogger holiday home tour I’m participating in so stayed turned.

What To Do Now To Prepare For Christmas

Hello friends!  Where is the time going?  Today I’m tapping into my inner girl scout and sharing a post about being prepared.  And while this is a post about getting ready for Christmas, it’s not meant to take the focus off of Thanksgiving and what that holiday means.  Instead my goal is to help you get a jump of Christmas so that once Thanksgiving has passed you can usher in the Christmas season with less stress and anxiety and enjoy it to the fullest.

By nature I’m a preparer and organizer.  I don’t function well without order in my life, a daily to-do list, and a cup of tea in the morning.   So, these tips are just as much for you as they are for me. With only 7 weeks before Christmas, nows the time to start making that list and checking it twice!

Preparing For Christmas.001

#1 Pull out your holiday decor and assess what you have. Stores have been stocked with Christmas decor for weeks (and in some cases months) and items are selling fast.  Now is the time to take inventory of what Christmas decor you have and what items you need to purchase.  This is especially key when it comes to Christmas lights because there never seem to be enough white Christmas lights to go around.

#2  Determine your holiday decor theme.  Once you’ve looked through your Christmas decor, determine what your decorating theme will be this year.  You may have a traditional look that you want to continue with or you may want to change things up a bit.  Whatever look you want, now is the time to get a picture in your head so when you start to decorate you’ll know exactly the look you want.

2014 Christmas Table By ConfettiStyle(33) copy

# 3  Schedule time to buy, set-up and decorate the tree.  Decorating a Christmas tree is a task so block out time on your calendar for decorating so you don’t feel rushed.  If you buy a live tree, plan the date when you’ll go purchase the tree and then make sure the area where it will go is clear and free for when you bring it home.

# 4  Plan your gift list.  All of the major retailers and online stores have begun to promote their holiday gift guides.  Gift guides show you the hottest items of the season so take note because they can be a great starting point in helping you create your own gift list.  If you’ve got electronics and toys on your list, it’s also a great time to start price shopping to find the best deals.

# 5  Buy (or make) your Christmas cards.  I was in Target the other day and they have the cutest Christmas cards.  Just like gift wrap and Christmas lights, the weeks before Thanksgiving is when Christmas cards start flying off the shelf.  Head to the store in the next week to get your cards so you don’t miss out on the best designs. Or you can be totally insane like me and try to fit handmade cards onto the to-do list!

Christmas Gift Wrap 2014 by ConfettiStyle (7) copy

# 6  Create a giftwrap station (or at least pull together your holiday wrapping materials).  I love to wrap gifts so creating a gift wrap stations is something I love to do.  Fill a basket with holiday wrapping essentials so everyone in the family can easily access the items.  Here’s what items should be included in your giftwrap station:  assorted size boxes, tissue paper, wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, tags, embellishments, scissors

**my favorite sources for holiday wrap this year:  Giftwrap Wonderland, Sugar Paper LA and Paper Source

#7  Ready the guest room.  There’s always lots to do to prepare for the holidays and it’s the little things that often get overlooked.  If you have guests coming for Christmas, spend a couple of hours getting the guest room prepared.  Check out my guest room ready post to help you welcome your guests in style.

Christmas Gift Wrap 2014 by ConfettiStyle (8) copy

# 8  Set the table.  I know this won’t work if you use your dining table everyday but I know for many folks the dinning room only gets used on special occasions.  If you fall into that category, plan ahead and get the table ready for your holiday dinner.  Iron the linens, pull out the china and create your place settings. A few days before Christmas, create the centerpiece and you’ll be all set.

# 9  Plan you menu & buy cooking staples.  Cooking is not one of my favorite things to do and I get really cranky when I decide to cook and find I’m missing a staple like baking soda or spices.  Now is the time to loosely plan your holiday menu and purchase all of the staples you’ll need so you have them on hand.

DIY Mug Wrap by ConfettiStyle1

and with all that preparation you be able to…

# 10  Enjoy the season!  Taking time to prepare for the busy holiday season will pay off in big ways because you’ll be able to relax, enjoy a hot toddy and watch your favorite Christmas movies without stress.
