DIY Acrylic Tray

Earlier this week I shared my love of Lucite Trays and how versatile I think they are as a decorative element. Seeing so many beautiful acrylic trays on Pinterest made me want to craft one (or two) of my own. So I did just that!

Most of the handmade acrylic trays I’ve seen and even the ones that you can buy on Etsy are all about the interior design.  I wanted my trays to have a little more pizzazz so as well as decorating the inside of the trays,  I decided to add decorative handles  and a ribbon trim to each.
Both of the trays I made were super easy and very inexpensive.  I started with two plastic box frames which were $3.99 for the 8 x 10 size and $4.99 for the 11 x 14 size, decorative knobs which were $3.99 each,  scrapbook paper which I had in my stash and ribbon which was from my ribbon “collection” {otherwise known as my ribbon hoard}.
All of the supplies I purchased came from Hobby Lobby and I used my 40% off coupon on some of the elements and the others were part of a 50% off in store sale so the savings were even greater.  The total cost for the smaller tray, including ribbon and paper, was $ 8.25 and the larger tray cost $9.75!

How To:

  •  Take the cardboard and paper insert out of the box frame
  •  Cut your scrapbook paper to fit the inside of the frame.  If you are using 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper, you’ll need to cut two pieces and fit them together for the larger tray.  Once the paper is cut, use double-sided tape to hold it in place.   ***If you are using your tray for serving, a quick coat of Mod Podge or a layer of clear contact paper will protect the paper surface.
  •  Measure and cut a length of ribbon to fit around the outside of the tray. Hot glue the ribbon at the corners of the tray and where the edges overlap.
  • Remove the screws that come with the knobs.  Hot glue the knobs on to the tray, on top of the ribbon.
  • Style and admire your tray!

Welcome Spring!

Today is the first day of Spring and what better way to welcome the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, and regrowth than with a few Spring Updates around the house!

I try to keep a vase of fresh flowers in my home year round but spring is definitely the season to brighten your home with the colors, textures and scent of a fresh bouquet.  While I’m not big on decorating for Easter, I do love the idea of mixing a few Easter eggs in with flowers to celebrate the holiday and put a spin on an ordinary flower arrangement.
(To quote the previous poster...) Decorate your table with this pretty spring nest. Start with dampened moss in a medium-size bowl, then tuck small flowers around the edge. Next, place a smaller bowl filled with speckled candy eggs in the center, making sure the rim of the bowl is well camouflaged with moss and flowers. #Easter #centerpiece #eggs #flowers #decor #table #spring

Forsythia or cherry blossom branches are one of my favorite natural elements to decorate with.  Branches placed in glass jars or even vintage rubber boots can be a fun addition to your spring mantle, tabletop or entryway.

Springtime means more sunlight and longer days.  A quick way to freshen up your décor for the season is with spring inspired pillows.  Bring the colors of nature inside with brighter colors, vibrant patterns and floral images.

The color  yellow is a definite sign of spring and the sunnier days ahead.  Lemons places in a jar will brighten your kitchen and can be used to decorate a bookshelf, windowsill or dining table.  Combine green apples with oranges and lemons for even more vibrancy.

Fruit Sensations Problem: Not enough accessories Solution: Don't let your refrigerator have all the fun! Put colorful fruit on display in glass jars or footed glass bowls. Choose the long-lasting fruits of the season for a colorful, affordable, and delicious display. Oranges, lemons, and limes add a refreshing touch to spring or summer decorating. Apples are a great choice for fall or winter.

What better way to welcome spring then with fresh front door décor.  Try replacing a traditional wreath with a basket of natural elements to say WELCOME spring.

I know it will be a bit longer before I can run through the grass with bare feet or go on a picnic but I’m excited that spring is officially here!

Did you get the new Pottery Barn catalog in the mail?   I got mine last night and immediately sat down and flipped through the pages.  Wow, there are so many awesome new items that I am loving!

So over the top in love with this Cuisine Paper Towel Holder. And knowing me, I’d also try to find a way to use to as a gift wrap holder.  Anyone know a company that makes small rolls of wrap??

The shape and hardware on the Jacquelyne Lidded Barrel Basket make it special.

Arden Lockers

The Arden Lockers would be such a cool piece for a kids room or basement.

This Ikat Drum lampshade is over the top gorgeous!

and this Wheel Barrel Bowl would be so fun to plan a summer party around.

I could go on and on with the items I love but I don’t want to spoil your adventure of flipping though the catalog.

Pottery Barn always seems to deliver a great selection of unique, stylish and adorable items to fit any décor style.  As a designer, they are one of my go to sources for accessories and tabletop items.

P.S. You’ll love all the new bedding they just introduced and if Easter décor is your thing you’ll love all the rabbit themed pieces they have.

Enjoy the catalog and leave me a comment letting me know what items are your favorite.

Entertaining Idea: Menu Cards

I love to style tablescapes for dining and entertaining and always focus on little touches that will make the décor special and unique.  One of my favorite elements to use is menu cards.  Normally reserved for weddings or formal dinners, menu cards can enhance all types of parties and entertaining events.
Here are a few Menu Card ideas I’m loving.
Playful nautical stripes
A simple card like this can be used for a ladies luncheon, garden club luncheon or a causal bridal shower.
 Beautiful old menu card
Although this look is super formal you could interpret this fan idea for an outdoor BBQ, a picnic/family reunion or an outdoor concert when you and a group of friends rent one of the dining tables.
love the circular menu card.
I love the idea of a round menu card using chalkboard paper or black cardstock and a white paint pin.  The circle fits perfectly in the center of the plate and can be place under the plate when service begins.  So chic!
Chocolate menu
How fabulous is the idea?!!  The perfect menu card for a wedding or anniversary party and the party favor is already taken care of too!
Menu card (may serve as a charger) over rose petals | WedLuxe Magazine
This menu card was created by etching or stenciling the menu onto an acrylic block that serves as the charger plate.  So dang gorgeous!

The menu card as the napkin cuff…another brilliant idea!
Dual-purpose Wine Bottle ~ Menu, Table Name ~ Photography by michaelandannacosta.com
If you don’t want to create individual menu cards for each place setting, create a card to place around the wine bottles that will sit on the table.
Doesn't just have to be a menu card; could be a Thank You note, Happy Easter wish......(I could see leaving one of these on teachers' desks on the day before Good Friday)
Adorable!
Screen-printed menu napkins featured buttonholes so male guests could attach them to their shirts
A little extravagant for everyday occasions but for a wedding this is so unique!
napkins and library menu cards
Love this old school theme using library cards to write the menu on!  You can find library cards here on Etsy.
Menu Card and Plate
The layered look of this menu card adds to the bohemian feel of the tablescape.

Another fabulous old school idea that is super creative.  How many of you remember making these when you were younger?
So many beautiful ways to enhance your party table.
