Craft and Hobby Spaces

As a crafter and DIY girl, I am always on the look out for unique craft and hobby work spaces that will  inspire me, along with decorating and organizing ideas that I can incorporate into my space.

One of my first sources of inspiration is the magazine Where Women Create.  When I first stumbled upon this publication I couldn’t believe someone had created a magazine to showcase the creative spaces of women all over the world.  Created by Jo Packham, Where Women Create gives you an insider view of  “the inspiring work spaces of extraordinary women.”

The publication is filled with beautiful images and stories from the artist, about their work and the creative spaces they call home.  Here’s a look at some of my favorite creative spaces:

I love this all white space, with pops of color infused to give it some creative personality.

The oversized letters and bold yellow chair immediately awake my creativity.

It’s always great to incorporate a lounge chair into a creative space, so flipping through magazines, books or fabric stacks is a bit more comforting.

I love that color and pattern were used in unexpected places in this space.  The turquoise desk top is beautiful and the floral print used to frame the back of the bookshelves adds interest without overwhelming the space.  And, that red pendant light is to die for!

Even a small space can be turned into a beautiful craft area.  Here, a closet was outfitted with lots of great storage containers.  The orange boxes make the fun and the clear bins help to visually enlarge the space.

So feminine and pretty.  I adore the ruffle chair cover for the desk chair and the mix of storage boxes and bins.  Left over wallpaper, gift wrap or fabric and great options for covering plain storage pieces.

How fun is this space?  Style mixed with crafts, what’s better than that!

If you’re looking for clever ways to store some of your crafting supplies, here are a few photos that may help.

Inexpensive tension rods, used for curtains provide a great storage solution for ribbon spools.

Decorative vanity jars are great for holding pencils, scissors and other craft utensils.  And I love the blue tray, which makes it easy to clear the desk surface when extra space is needed.

Galvanized buckets hung from wire are stylish and rustic at the same time.

Have you ever thought about using a wine rack as supply storage?  Add glass or plastic cups and you’ve got a great look.

And of course, no post about incredible crafting spaces would be complete without images of the “queen of crafting” work space, Martha Stewart.  Martha uses here attic space as her craft room and incorporated cabinets and work surface all around the perimeter of the room.

Simple, beautiful and incredibly organized, like everything Martha does!

With all this craft and office space inspiration I’ve looked at lately, I decided to make a few decorative clip boards to dress up my space.

Not only will the clipboards help me stay organized, but I love how the mix of patterns give my space an eclectic vibe.  I’m in the process of making more stylish clipboards, which will be for sell on my Etsy site, which I plan to launch next month.  Stay tuned.

Do you have a craft or hobby room?  And, what do you love to craft?

Come back tomorrow to check out a few crafting projects I’ve been busy with.

Have a great weekend!

BIG BOX BEAUTIES

Even though I am out shopping a lot, I never seem to have time to check out what the Big Box Retail stores are doing, stores like Target, Restoration Hardware, Z Gallerie, Anthropologie, Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn.  While I do check out products from these companies on-line, visiting these stores in person is a completely different experience.  Mass merchants, as they are known, have really stepped up their game and are now offering some of the most stylish and affordable home decor products on the market.

This past weekend I was feeling a bit disconnected from mall shopping, so I carved out a bit of time to hit my favorite mass market retailers and was thrilled to find some incredible home decor items.  Check out some of my favorite finds…

Animal Print Bowl–Pier 1.  This store is really making a comeback and offering some really great items.  Since I love animal prints, I was drawn to this glass bowl.

French Glass Cloches–Restoration Hardware.  With Christmas nearing, I can totally envision displaying ornaments and cards under these glass domes.

Love Bird Wall Art–Urban Outfitters.  I’m not really a bird person, but I really like the homespun feel of this artwork.

Nest Pillow–Pottery Barn.  Simply cute.  I’m planning to add this pillow to my guest bedroom.

Pirquette Chair–Crate and Barrel.  Typically Crate and Barrel’s furniture leans a bit more contemporary, but I love the classic feel of the fabric and styling of this chair.

Gunmetal Candleholders–Z Gallerie.  I’m a sucker for beautiful candleholders.  I love the antique distressing of these pieces.

Mirrored Vanity Tray–Target  (only $16.99).  How cute is this tray?  After reading about all the wonderful blogger vanities on Jackie’s blog, SweetiePiePumpkinNoodle, I’m inspired to revamp my vanity a bit, starting with this tray.

Wall Clock–Z Gallerie.  Clocks are on of the essential decorative elements I think every home needs, and this is a wonderful classic style.

Chris Madden Faux Fur Rose Pillow–JC Penney–Closeout for $16.99.  I typically don’t shop JC Penney, but ever since they’ve partnered with Chris Madden on a furniture and home decor line, I find myself checking them out more often.  I love this pillow because of it detail and color.

Chenille Throw–Pottery Barn.  I tend to be cold all the time, so I keep a throw, or two in every room.  I love the texture of this cotton throw and that the fringe edge is a bit understated.  There is nothing more that I hate than a throw with long fringes.  Wouldn’t the deep red color be great during the holidays?

Fleur Fabric Covered Boxes–Container Store.  For me, the container store is a bit like IKEA–I go in to look at one thing and hours later I exit in a daze.  When I visited the store this past weekend, my first stop was the Giftwrap Wonderland.  I just love wrapping paper and Container Store has some really cute patterns this year.  Next, I checked at all the new storage options they have.  I ran across these great fabric covered boxes which I think are so stylish.

Pedestal Bowl–Z Gallerie.  I love the Z Gallerie store.  They always have a great collection of stylish tableware, like this pedestal bow.  Another great option to display ornaments this holiday, don’t you think?

Anthropologie Knobs–So many cute choices to update a piece of furniture.

Velvet Floor Cushion–Urban Outfitters.  One of the last stops on my mall shopping adventure was Urban Outfitters.  I’m amazing how this store has transformed over the years from a bohemian inspired clothing store, to a store offering trendy clothing, accessories and home decor.  I fell in love with their Velvet Floor Cushion.  It’s so soft and comes in a range of wonderful colors.

Even though I tend to shop at speciality stores more often than not, I found some great items in the big box stores, and will definitely shop them more often.

Have you found something  great at a big box store lately?
