I Love when I can Decorate for Free

As a designer, I spend lots of time attending markets and looking at beautiful and pricey items being produced by the leading designs and manufacturers around the world.  It is definitely a privileged to have access to those items and know that I can create a design plan with the best the market has to offer. But, one of the most favorite parts of designing for me is being able to design and decorate a room or home for FREE.

By FREE, I mean using the things that already exist in the home and creating an entirely fresh and new look with just those elements.  This is when I become most creative and really force myself to think outside the box.

So many homeowners today can’t or don’t want to spend lots of money re-decorating their homes. They love the things that have,  but feel like their home environment is a bit stale and tired. In many of these cases, it’s really a matter of reworking what you own to create a new look.  When faced with this design challenge, here are the techniques I use to make something old, new again!

HOW TO RE-DECORATE YOUR HOME FOR FREE

SWAP–I walk through the entire house and take inventory of what items exist, and begin to envision how things can be used or positioned differently within the home.  Who says the neutral chair in the guest bedroom has to stay there?  It might just look great in the family room.  Shopping your own home and swapping items from one space to another is a quick and easy way to give your decor new life.

RE-ARRANGE–Has your furniture been in the same spot for years?  Try a new floor plan to give the room a new perspective and point of view.  Move the sofa to the other side of the room, change the positioning of the area rug or put the console table that usually sits along the wall, behind the sofa.  Look at your room layout in a different way.

Re-arranging furniture can give a room a total over-haul.  In many cases, you might create a new focal point for the room or allow for a better traffic flow within the space.  Try moving things around and see what a difference it can make.

DE-CLUTTER–I’m a bit OCD when it comes to organization, but I know for a fact that a space feels better and functions better without clutter.  Use baskets and decorative boxes to hold items that you use on a daily basis, and turn bookshelves into a display space as well as a place to store things.  There are so many great accessories out there that will allow you to control the clutter while keeping your space stylish.

RE-ACCESSORIZE–Not only do I love moving accessories around in my home, but I have a stash of items that I pull out at different times of the year to give me something fresh and new to look at.

Create a new look out of ordinary objects.

Re-hanging artwork in a  new layout is a great way to update your space and make it look new.  Instead of two framed pieces on a wall, pull other pieces from around your house and create a cluster of art.  Gallery Wall statements are really popular now and can add a lot of impact to your decor.  Another trick I use is to change out some of my art for quotes printed out on my computer.  The graphic impact of lettering can give your home a fresh, modern vibe.

CHANGE THE MOOD–Sometimes everything about a rooms design can be good, but the mood of a space is off.  Open the windows and let light in, add scented candles to a space or bring in fresh flowers.  Or, try adding a mirror to a room if one doesn’t exit.  Mirrors work magic on a space, enhancing the light, creating dimension and adding visual interest.  These little changes can and will make a room come alive and “feel good”.

Creating a new look and feel doesn’t have to be costly. Take stock of what you already own and try making a few changes with your furniture placement, accessories and wall decor.  You’ll be surprised at how a little creativity and thinking outside the box, can turn an old look into a fresh new statement.

Happy Decorating!

Are You Ready?

While it’s only September 5th, I’m ready for the temperatures to drop and the leaves to change. While we may not be able to control the weather, we can begin to make changes within our home to usher in Fall.

Infusing a bit of Fall into your decor is as simple as this…

  1. Add in a few warm, spice tones.  Changing out pillows on the sofa is a quick and easy way to transition for one season to the next.
  2. Add layers with throw blankets.  Pull out a textured, plush throw and drape it across the arm of a chair or the foot of the bed.
  3. Change out some artwork.  Replace bolder pieces of art for pieces with warmer, richer colors. Try framing decorative fabric, wrapping paper or scrapbook paper in inexpensive Ikea frames.
  4. Look at replacing a white or neutral lampshade with a black, dark brown or linen shade.
  5. Change out your area rugs or add one if your floors have gone bare all summer.  Rugs will make a space feel cozy and more intimate.
  6. Paint–while time-consuming, painting your walls or just one accent wall in a fall inspired color will add instant warmth.
  7. Light the candles and use beautiful bunches of fall flowers to enhance your tabletop arrangements.

For those of you like me, ready for summer to fade away and those of you that may not have embraced the idea of Fall yet, I think these images will add fuel to your fire.

Enjoy and be inspired which ever side of the fence you’re on.

Love the orange pillows and how easily they work with red accents.

This room is pure warmth and coziness.  Love all the textured pillows on the sofa and that fluffy rug.

The orange accents really give the space added style, while making the color palette rich and warm.

So simple, but so cozy!

So beautiful how orange, brown, citrus green, off-white and a pop of red work together to give this space depth.

Love all the textures!

Cool colors and warm colors create a beautiful look!  The orange pillows tie it all together.

All it takes is a single pop of color.

Such an eclectic mix of color and pattern–stunning!

A single color carried throughout the room–lovely!

Love how this small corner was turned into a stunning art display, set off by the pumpkin walls.

Even a play room can have a sophisticated fall feeling.

Love the rug.  I can see a sisal for spring/summer and this gorgeous pattern for the fall/winter.

Texture, color and layers…it’s that easy!

Are you ready for Fall?  What changes will you be making with your decor?

Unique Ways to Decorate with Mirrors

Mirrors are the wonder child of design.

When placed in the expected places, over the mantle, above a console table, over a dining room buffet or on the wall over a sofa, mirrors work their magic on a room…

  • They reflect light and make a room feel brighter,
  • They make small spaces appear larger,
  • And, short space appear longer.
  • They reflect small details and make them appear grander,
  • And, they add visual dimension and depth to a room.

When used in a unique way and placed in unexpected places, mirrors not only work their magic on a room, but they give the space a distinct personality and style…

Behind Furniture

large mirrors placed behind furniture give a space more impact

In Clusters

clustering mirrors creates a unique wall decor statement.  Use a single frame color for a more uniform look, and mixed frame styles and colors for a more eclectic feel

In Pairs

when one mirror isn’t enough to fully fill a wall space, use two for added dimension

I love mirrors above the nightstand

Behind The Bed

behind the bed, mirrors are a great alternative to framed art

love this stylized grouping of mirrors

Layerd and Leaning

even when placed casually, mirrors are stylish.  Try leaning a few atop a piece of furniture or along a picture rail

this look is great for a hallway or foyer

MIrrors are one of  my go-to decorative accessories. I always work them into my design plans and challenge myself to use them in unique ways.

The Starting Point of Design

One of the questions I know every designer gets asked is,“where do I start when designing a room?”  Put five designers in a room and you’ll probably get five different answers to that question.  Some would say wall color, others would say artwork, and yet someone else might say the rug.  While there may not be a right or wrong answer to this question,  there are some pros and cons to the most common answers that you might hear.

ART, WALL DECOR & WALLPAPER

Encompassing the largest visual area within a room, the walls definitely influence the overall look and feel of a space.  If the artwork you’re placing in a room is oversized or unique, you can use this as the starting point of your design plan.  As a general rule of thumb, I like to interpret the lightest colors within the art onto the main pieces of furniture, and keep the bolder tones for the accent pieces and accessories.

In the photo above, the exact colors from the artwork were used for the pillows and in the side chair fabric. A tone of the lightest color within the art was used for the sofa fabric.  The bright yellow garden seat provides a vibrant punch and the white rug and tabletop accessories serve as a visual contrast to the overall color palette.  All of the colors (or tones and shades of) are in the artwork so the story of the room is tied together.

Again, the boldest color within the artwork is pulled down into the room and used for accent pillows.  A shade of the darkest color forms the pattern within the chair fabric.  The white matte surrounding the artwork shows up in the chair fabric, coffee table top, mantle and accessories.  The gold framed floor mirror is just another tone of the yellow gold found in the art and rug.

This oversized and very intricate piece of wall art is composed of  just two colors. By using white as the key color in the room, the dark background of the art helps to ground the room and give it depth.  A few darker pops are incorporated with the accent pillow, rug and throw to balance the visual impact.

Wallpaper with a defined pattern and theme can definitely serve as the jumping off point for your room design.  The accessories are a direct interpretation of the wallpaper and the white table, lamp and garden seat connect the wall paper to the decor.  Whenever I add an accent color into a space, I always try to use it, or a version of it in three places within the room.  This way the color addition looks intentional.  Can you spy the three “red” accents?   (mirror, apple arrangement, terracotta pot)

If your wallpaper showcases a specific theme, let that be the foundation for the decor.

THE RUG

As with wall decor, bold patterned rugs can and are often the starting point for a rooms design. Pull key colors from the rug pattern and use that as the foundation for your furnishings and accessories.

The dark teal wall color is found in the rug pattern and allows the more vibrant colors used within the room to pop.  The berry tones are scattered around the room via the accessories, and the white within the room helps to soften the overall look.

The blue and white striped rug not only defines the color palette of this room, but the vertical stripes visually enlarge the space and create movement for the eye.  The deepest shade of blue from the rug is the color used throughout the room, creating a very seamless and cohesive design statement.  White keeps the space light, airy and modern.

YOUR FURNITURE STYLE

Is your furniture retro, contemporary, antique, cottage or maybe some other distinct style?  If so, you furniture will definitely define how your room is decorated.  You want the space to feel unified so everything you place in that space will connect back to your furniture style and communicate a clear message.

A retro styled sofa and coffee table call for vintage modern wall decor and sleek flooring.  The room has a focused point of view and design style.

Shabby, worn and rustic furnishings in white call for walls and floors in white.  Bolder colors mixed with the white furniture would look harsh and forced.  Using subtle, washed out tones keep the space soothing and calm.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

Today, many people are building distinct architectural elements into the design of their rooms.  Arches, beams and millwork give the space character and define the rooms style.

The shape of this hanging pendant light plays off the shape of the overhead arch.  A longer, slender light fixture would have diminished the arch detail and made the entire space less appealing.

This india inspired arch was clearly the starting point for the design of this space.  The fabrics, furniture and colors all play off the shape of the door opening.

COLOR

For many people, a key color is what they base their design plan on.  If you are using a strong, bold color, don’t be shy.  Make a statement with it and make it intentional.

Using subtle variations of a strong color will add visual interest while keeping the design theme in tack.  White or off-white is best as an accent color so the bold color does not overpower.

Hot pink on the walls shows up again in the window treatments, throw and within the art and accessories.  Again, white is used to keep the space from being too jarring.

A bold color plays off  black really well, but creates a more dramatic statement overall.  Repeat the touch of black in multiple places within the room to tie it all together.

FABRIC

If I’m designing a room from scratch, fabrics typically serve as my starting point.  The sofa fabric dictates the fabrics for the window treatments, accent chairs, rugs, pillows, accessories, and paint color.

Once I pick my fabrics, I then select the wall color and go from there.

The light turquoise in the chair fabric is pulled in via the ceiling paint and the neutral sofa color shows up again in the rug, wall color and other accessories.  This space connects the dots beautifully.

In this space, the window treatment fabric provides the dominate visual statement.  The terra-cotta color defines the color statement for the room, with darker, richer shades within the same color family found on the sofa, table cubes, pillows and lighting.

The bottom line on finding the starting point for a room design is to pick the most dominant visual statement,  use that as your launching pad and tie your colors, accessories, furnishings and wall decor back to that dominate element.  This approach will ensure a cohesive & beautifully decorated space.

I’m off to meet with a client this morning to begin work on a design plan for her basement.  I wonder what the starting point of this plan will be?

Have a great day!

For the Love of Wood

I’m really enjoying HGTV’s Design Star now that the contestants have been narrowed down to those with both talent and good personalities.

One of my favorite designers is Mark Diaz.  While I would love to see him design a room where his wood projects are not the only things that stand out, I did love the space he designed on this weeks show.

The sofas were a little lack luster to me, but his pillow choice livend them up a bit.

Undoubtedly,  Mark is gifted when it comes to turning a piece of reclaimed wood into a work of art.  The dining table is magnificent and I really like the wall panels.

The wood room dividers were incredible and helped to define the two spaces without taking away anything from either.

Don’t get the two area rugs?

Love the bench.  This could work in so many homes.

The whole trend on using reclaimed wood in home design is hotter than ever and Mark’s talent may have come at the perfect time for HGTV.  The question is, would I like seeing “wood projects” week after week if he won design star?  Probably so, because David Bromstad’s big, colorful art hasn’t worn me down yet.

Do you love reclaimed wood or is it a trend you’re ready to see go?

Here are some beautiful spaces, using reclaimed wood, that might sway your opinion?
