An Easy DIY Fix For An Ikea Eyesore

Have you ever bought a cabinet or bookcase from Ikea only to be disappointed by the gap between the cabinet doors? Me too! I hate that you can see bits and pieces of what’s inside the cabinet through the gap.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased the Brimnes cabinet to go in our basement landing area. I needed some storage in that area but didn’t want to spend a lot of money so Ikea was a great solution.

Ever since the hubby put the cabinet together I’ve been staring at that darn gap between the doors. I’ve been thinking about how I could make it disappear and finally figured out a super easy and inexpensive fix.

The FIX…

I dug through my craft supplies and found a piece of basswood that I purchased years ago from Hobby Lobby. If you’re not familiar with basswood, it’s a very thin piece of bendable hardwood that can be cut with scissors, painted or stained. Crafters use it to create arched or circular shapes for craft projects.

With my basswood in hand, I put my DIY skills to work. Here’s how I fixed the gap...

Step 1: I cut my basswood to the length of my door. (note: you’ll only be attaching wood to one door). If your door length is longer than 24″, you’ll need to use two pieces of wood and glue them together. The doors on my cabinet are 36″ so I glued two 24″ lengths together and then cut it down to size.

Step 2: Next I painted the wood black to match my cabinet. Because the wood is so thin, it doesn’t take long for the paint to dry.

Step 3: The final step was attaching the wood piece to the open edge of one cabinet door. I used glue dots to attach the wood to my door leaving about 1 1/2″ of wood extended beyond the door edge. The thin basswood sheet will sit between the doors and the interior shelves and fills the dreaded gap.

Gap be gone! Now you can’t see between the doors and the cabinet looks finished.

One other change I made to the cabinet was switching out the ugly wood handles for brass knobs that I bought at Scott Antique Market. Instead of a single pull, I decided on four knobs and just love the look.

Sometimes it the little things that make the biggest difference.

Stylish Bookcases in a Flash

Whew!!!! That’s all I can say at this moment! You might have noticed that I’ve been absent here on the blog for the last few days and you might have wondered what I’ve been up to. I wish I could say I was off enjoying the beach or taking a fun trip but that’s not the case. The fact is that I’ve got a lot of projects on my to-do list and they have kept me so busy that I haven’t found the time, energy or creative mindset to blog.

One of the projects I’ve been working on is a big event for a non-profit agency I work with. I am on the board of directors for the Community Assistance Center and I’m chair for their big fund-raising gala which is next weekend. All the planning and making the centerpieces for the table décor have me knee-deep in auction items, paperwork and paper crafting.

I’ve also been super busy working on the finishing touches of a e-design project which I’ll share with you soon, trying to add a little fall flavor to my home and finishing up a piece for my desk (I know I promised to show it to you last week). All in all, things are a tad busy in my life at the moment.

So now that you know I’m still alive and kicking, I did want to drop in today and share one of my favorite product lines with you.

But one day you take a hard look at your bookcases and the hundreds of books that are staring at you just waiting to be covered and you think to yourself, there has to be an easier way to make my bookcases look pretty.

We’ll folks I’m here to share a great source for INSTANT BOOKCASE STYLE with you, E. Lawrence Books!

Several years ago, when my store was open, I sold E. Lawrence books but I had forgotten just how amazing they are until a trip to the mart last week. E. Lawrence has always had a great selection of leather-bound, classic covered books perfect for a library or more formal setting, but over the years they’ve added lots of stylish covered books to the mix. Their book collections are really dynamic and are a great way to add a strong design statement to your bookcases in a flash.

The Eifel Tower set is one of my favorites. Because the books stack vertically, they are great on shelves with large openings or on the tops of bookcases or armoires.

The paper zebra covers are just amazing and so chic!

They have lots of different floral covers which can add a bohemian feel to your shelves.

The ikat and flame stitch patterns are also some of my faves. Reminds me of something you’d see in Anthropologie.

The lighthouse covers would be great in a men’s study or young boys room.

Party Inspiration: Pink & Green

Cheers to Monday! I hope your weekend was good. My weekend was very productive. I spent a lot of time purging my magazine collection (only 20 more to go) and have lots of new inspiration photos to file way and new DIY projects to add to the to-do list. I also cleaned the carpet, started working on some new gift wrap inspiration and an easy fashion accessory DIY project which I’ll share with you later this week. With all the time I’ve spent indoors, I’m itching to go thrifting and the timing couldn’t be any better since the Scott’s Antique Market is this weekend.

One of the other things I did this weekend was to play around with some party theme ideas. Since summer is winding down I came up with a party theme using colors that are perfect for transitioning from summer to fall. Just in cast you want to have an impromptu gathering before summers over I hope this inspires you.

A Crazy Week Ahead + Timeless Design

Happy Monday! Did everyone have a fabulous 4th of July and a good weekend? I hope so. Our 4th was rained out and with all the rain we had over the last 4 days, the hubby and I felt like we were back in Seattle. I’m glad the sun in shining today and that I got a good nights sleep last night.

I’ve got a super busy week ahead working on pulling together the details for a non-profit fund-raiser I’m heading up, going to the Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market on Wednesday, attending an event with designer Bunny Williams on Thursday, making the trek to Scott’s Antique Market and the United Methodist Children’s Home Flea Market on Friday and celebrating my 22nd wedding anniversary and the hubs birthday on Saturday and Sunday! Oh, and there’s work to be done in between all of that. You can rest assured I’m going to be eating my Wheaties this week.

One of the design projects I’ve worked on recently had me going back to design basics. I found myself working with a client that likes traditional décor and wants a classic and timeless interior. With so many of the design trends today leaning toward creative paint treatments, bold colors, artistic elements and eclectic looks, it can be challenging to develop a look that is really timeless.

To give us all a little refresher in classic design, I’ve pulled together a little summary of 12 Timeless Design elements I always rely on!

#1 Curtains Hung High—Every room can benefit from hanging curtains as close to the molding/ceiling as possible. No only does this make a room feel taller but it also enhances the scale of the furniture in the room.

#2 Built-in Bookcases–Whether bookcase are used for books or decorative elements (a combination of both is my formula) , built-in bookcases add architectural detail, storage and visual impact in any room of the house. {to get the look on a dime, check out all the Ikea Billy Bookcase DIY projects on my Ikea Inspiration Pinterest Board}!

#3 Woven Shades–If anything can replace wood blinds in a home it’s the woven shade. This window treatment offers just the right amount of texture, color and privacy while adding to the style of a room. Alone or paired with curtain panels, woven shades are here to stay.

#4 Window Seats–Who doesn’t dream about having a window seat in their home? Window seats are the perfect design element for that often neglected space in front of a window, not taking away from the view but making a room feel cozier and more intimate.

#5 Seagrass, Sisal and Jute Rugs–I know there are those of you that don’t like these natural textured rugs because of the feel or a fear of keeping it clean but for me a sisal and seagrass rug is the best way to add visual texture under foot while keeping a room feeling open and airy. My go to source for seagrass rugs here in Atlanta is Myers Carpet.

#6 Ceramic Lamps–Lamp styles evolve but a classic round ceramic lamp will never go out of style. Ceramic lamps provide a visual contrast in rooms with lots of wood furniture and are a great balance against metal and iron. And the color options are endless (especially with a can of spray paint)!

#7 Sofa Tables (or console tables in general) are one of my go to pieces of furniture. This is one piece of furniture that will work in just about every room of a home and a piece that is just as functional as it is stylish. I love placing a console table next to bed and using it as a unique nightstand/writing-table option.

#8 Baskets–Baskets can hide a multitude of design sins (paperback books on a bookshelf, DVD’s) and are a great way to fill the space under tables, in corners or above cabinets or armoires. One can never have too many baskets in my book. My go to source of chunky woven baskets is HomeGoods, World MarketandIkea!

#9 Medium Tone Wood Floors–While I personally like the trend of darker espresso wood floors, mid-tone wood flooring will never go out of style. The color is versatile and works with just about every color of textile or paint you surround it with.

#10 Oversized Mirrors–Just like a sofa table, an oversized mirror is one of your best design investments. Opt for a black, gold or silver frame to keep the look classic and be creative about where you place it in your home. Oversized mirrors work great in a dining room, foyer, over a sofa, above a fireplace, at the top of a stair landing and in a bedroom.

#11 A Neutral Sofa–A neutral sofa will not only stand the test of time but it gives you the perfect backdrop to make seasonal color and accessory changes. Timeless design gives you options and the look never goes out of style.

#12 An Upholstered Coffee Table–Since wood furniture is the foundation of so many rooms, an upholstered coffee table/ottoman is a great way to add softness without giving up a functional surface area in the room. Plus, additional seating is ready when you need it.

What I Bought at The Longest Yard Sale

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post recap of our Longest Yard Sale trip, we shopped our way from Kentucky to Alabama.

Before I left home, I created a list of items I hoped to find and am glad to say that most of the items got checked off my list.

My Shopping list included:

VINTAGE TYPEWRITER–I’ve wanted one of these for a few years.

MIRRORS–I found one that I really like. I plan to paint the frame black or white.

VINTAGE SCALE–Another item that I have wanted for a while. I seen lots at the markets I attend but most are priced above what I want to pay. The one I found on our trip was $15.00!

VINTAGE RUBBER STAMPS–Found a few to add to my rubber stamp collection, now over 1100!

VINTAGE JEWELRY–I was looking for jewelry that I could repurpose into the jewelry I make and sell on my Etsy Shop. I found some really cool hardware pieces and some great rhinestone pieces too!

VINTAGE LINENS—Didn’t find much that I wanted to buy expect a few vintage hankies!

OWLS–I’m on an Owl kick lately but didn’t find anything that floated my boat.

LETTERS and TYPOGRAPHY–I purchased some cool metal letters and an ampersand sign–Great buy for $4.00!

CLOCKS–Funny but I didn’t see much in this category.

Now that you’ve seen some of the items I purchased, I want to share a few tips on shopping the sale with you. This was the second year I attended the sale and between the two years I’ve learned a lot.

1. Plan your route early and make hotel reservations! Most of the hotels along the route sell out several months in advance and many raise their rates beyond your wildest dreams. Yes, Super 8 was charging $250 for a room over the weekend. I found a great room at the Crossville, TN Best Western for $90. Not only was the hotel nice, offering a free hot breakfast but it was located right off interstate 40 so there were lots of stores, gas stations and restaurants in the area. This will definitely be a stop for next year.

The other towns I’d look to stay in is Danville, KY or Albany, KY.

2. Kentucky has the best selection and some of the best prices. Last year we drove from Alabama up north to Chattanooga and although I found some good deals I heard from many people that Kentucky was the place to shop. I also read the blog post from Eddie Ross on the items he found last year during the sale shopping between Kentucky and Chattanooga. Based on this info. we decided this year to drive to Kentucky and come south.

All along the route you’ll find large pockets of vendors set up to sell items. Kentucky had more of these than Tennessee or Georgia. In some places over 500 vendors were set up. Frankfort, Danville and Liberty, KY all had major shopping areas. Crossville, TN was also one of the spot we heard that HGTV films at.

In my opinion stopping at these larger shopping spots paid off more than stopping more often at smaller venues.

3. If you love it, buy it! Don’t pass up something you love because I promise you’ll be thinking about it for the rest of the trip. The Longest Yard Sale is not a place you want to muddle over your purchase. If it fits your budget and you love it, go for it because there are lots of people looking over your shoulder. My friend Tina snagged a $15 chair from under two women because she didn’t stop to think about it.

4. Negotiate the price! All of the vendors selling along the route are willing and expect to bargain on their prices. I always ask “is this the best price you can do?’ and they always come down on the price. I even had some vendors come down by 1/2 or more.

5. Bring sufficient cash and small bills! There are not a lot of banks or stores along the route so having cash on hand is a good deal. Some vendors take credit cards but using a my credit card in some field in the middle of Tennessee was not something I wanted to do.

6. Bring lots of water and food. Last year we only had two bottles of water when we started the trip and no food. We thought we’d pass places to stop and eat but really didn’t. While there are some small towns with restaurants along the way there are major areas where there is nothing at all. If you don’t want to spend the weekend eating fair food, pack snacks and sandwiches in a cooler. Subway made this trip easy for us.

7. Dress comfortably and wear a hat. It is hot as the dickens here in the south in August and being in the sun all day can wear you out. Make it easy on yourself and don’t try to be cute….go for comfort!

And finally, take the time to enjoy the scenery and the people. We met lots of super nice people along the route, some of the vendors I shop with at Scott Antique were even there. You can definitely create some great memories during the Longest Yard Sale so have fun and take time to enjoy it all!

As for The Longest Yard Sale 2013….

I’ve already started thinking about the trip. I’ll definitely be spending more time shopping Kentucky and am working on a partnership with either Dodge or Ford to secure cargo vans to take along. I’d love to have a caravan of bloggers and friends so if you are interested let me know in the comments and I’ll keep you posted on all the plans.

Something Old…

Can be really great!

This past weekend, I set out to do some antique shopping at Scott’s Antique Market here in Atlanta. On Friday, my friend Robyne and I hit the market, wondering what treasures we would find.

I am not a seasoned antique shopper by any stretch of the imagination. I basically live by the rule of “if I like it, I buy it”, and don’t really think about the history, story or life-line of an item.

Robyne and I spent about 5 hours trolling through the booths and outdoors stalls and did see some great items. Check out our favorites…

This gorgeous piece had a weathered grey finish, inset mirror, antique brass shelf poles and the most delicate scalloped detailing. Just about everyone who passed by snapped a picture of this piece.

Birdcages are a hot design statement right now. This oversized cage was hand-forged from galvanized steel. I love the industrial finish paired with an almost Victorian shape.

I am typically not a blue person but this vingette was stunning. A mix of linen, burlap, cream and Wedgewood blue. These down filled pillows were only $48.

Robyne and I stopped in our tracks when we saw this display. Antique silver trays were transformed by adding mirrored centers to each and hung from satin ribbons. These beauties were priced between $28 and $48. Needless to say, Robyne and I are now on the hunt for trays so we can create our own pieces.

I snapped this photo because I loved the oversized straw totes displayed atop this antique hutch.

Robyne found a beauty of a chandelier to hang over her breakfast table, in her Arizona home. The wire chandelier looked a bit like this (picture no handles and basket turned upside down). The chandelier measured about 36″ dia and 30″ high. I’ll have here shared photos when she gets it in place.

One of the things I was looking for at Scott’s was antique jewelry. These are a few of the pieces I found. I plan to creates some wonderful new pieces using these elements. Oh, the wood finial at the top of the photo is for a tassel that I am making for another project.

Shopping antique markets is a lot of fun and very inspiring.
