Tabletop Inspiration: Vintage Style

One of the best parts of entertaining is pulling together a unique party decor.  Right now I’m all about vintage looks and the charm that goes with it so I thought I’d share a few style tips and design ideas on how to pull a vintage look together.

Entertaining Vintage Style

Style Tip:  A foundation to any vintage table setting is a mix of vintage china and dinnerware.  Collecting pieces with different colors, patterns and styles will give your table true vintage personality and layering from larger to smaller pieces will create dimension at each place setting.  Shop thrift stores, flea markets and estate sales to score your best deals.

Style Tip:  A really simple and inexpensive way to add a vintage touch to your table is with vintage dinner napkins.  While vintage napkins can be found at flea markets you can also shop for vintage sheets and pillowcase, cut them into napkin squares, pick the edges and use them as napkins!  I love this idea not only for its ease but also because the napkins are wash and go.

Style Tip:  Use vintage dinnerware in unexpected ways.  As a teacup collector, I love the idea of using teacups for things other than tea.  Teacups as mini flower vases will add an elegant touch to your table and I also like the idea of using teacups to serve dessert in.

Style Tip:  Lace=Vintage.  The addition of a lace tablecloth or topper will add instant vintage charm as well as make your table pretty.  If you want an even more eclectic look, try dying your lace in a fun color.

Style Tip:  What fun it is to mix and match your silverware?  Start collecting pieces you like and before you know it you’ll be able to create a fun look at your next party.  And, don’t be afraid to mix gold and silver pieces together.

Style Tip:  Sometimes a more casual dinner party does not need a tablecloth.  Instead, bring vintage style to the table by creating a runner using vintage tiles.  When it’s time for another party, use the tiles as placemats to change things up a bit.

If you’re really crafty, try decopauging vintage fabric pieces on to plain tiles to create a custom look.

Design Idea:  I love a good vintage inspired DIY project like this bandana tablecloth.  This look is great for an outdoor party or old-fashioned BBQ.

Michael’s or Hobby Lobby carry a vast range of bandana colors so the color possibilities are endless.

Design Idea:  If you’re looking for an inexpensive and versatile centerpiece, try grouping a collection of vintage vases and glassware together and adding a flowers all in the same color family.

For a quick DIY project, try painting thrift store glassware in soft, vintage pastel colors.

Style Tip:  Layering is a key part of vintage charm and this table setting is a great example of how to get the look.  Layer from the bottom up, using different textures and materials.

Larger Vintage Dollies make great placemats and smaller sizes are great to wrap around a plain napkin.

Design Idea:  Silverware Caddies are a look that has been used for years with more antique and vintage inspired table decor.  Simple pockets like this one made of burlap can be dressed up with vintage looking flowers, pearls and lace ribbon.

Style Tip:  Another great idea of using something for what it’s not meant for….curtain rings as napkin rings!

Vintage curtain rings are another thing to add to your thrift store shopping list.  Look for rings in antique gold or brass with clasp the resemble claw foots.

Entertaining in vintage style is all about the combination of items you use..mixing, matching and layering.  The beauty is not in repetition but in the randomness of things.

The Fashion and Function of Settees

One of my favorite pieces of furniture is the Settee.  Not only are Settees the fashionable but they provide function in so many home decor applications.

The Settee is a perfect option for seating at the foot of a bed.  Because they are larger in scale than a chair they balance the weight of a bed and add visual impact within a bedroom.

I love the idea of a Settee in a library or reading room.  It provides the perfect spot for lounging solo or sitting with someone special while reading.

As an accent in a living room, Settees provide additional seating without overpowering a space.

Tucked in front of a mirror in a bedroom, hallway or pass through, a Settee adds the charm.  And, the Settee is the perfect piece of furniture upholstered in a statement piece of fabric.

Replacing what would in most cases be a piece of furniture, a Settee keeps the space at the end of a foyer open and airy!

Tucked into those often neglected alcoves, a Settee makes this space come alive and purposeful!

Even in a more contemporary styled room, a Settee can make a statement and complete the look.  I love the curved details of this Settee amongst all the square and rectangular pieces.

One of my favorite applications for Settees is as an alternative to dining chairs. This dining space is so much more intimate and cozy with twin Settees.

In small rooms the Settee is a great alternative to a traditional sofa or grouping of chairs.

If you’re looking to make changes in your decor or need to save on space, a Settee is a very practical and stylish option!

Accessible Fashion: Cat Eye Sunglasses

Sunglasses are one of spring and summers must-have fashion accessories and this season the Cat Eye is the style of choice.

Cat Eye’s can be extreme…

I remember wearing cat eye glasses when I was little and loved the look when it was worn by style icons such as Audrey  Hepburn.

Face Shape vs. Edge Shape

Believe or not, this trend can look good on anyone. However, certain shapes look good on particular shape faces. If you have a round face, opt for a pair that has sharper edges or curve upwards gracefully. If you have a diamond or square shaped face, a rounded-out edge admires your structure beautifully. Also if you are a trendsetter that needs to make a statement, try glasses that are pointy and stick out. This bold look is very chic and gives an outfit a touch of sophistication. These rules are simple and easy, but always make sure you try different pairs on to see which retro shades flatter your face structure.”

I’m planning on doing some spring shopping this weekend and a pair of Cat Eye sunglasses are definitely on my list.

Will you be buying a pair of Cat Eye’s or passing on this trend?

My Spring Fashion “It” List

I am so loving the warm spring weather and all the great fashions I’m seeing in stores.  This spring, fashion in all about relaxed silhouettes, pretty florals, nautical stripes and bold colors.  Dresses are a wardrobe staple and wedge sandals and colorful flats are the footwear of choice.  Neon is also making a big impact and despite the fact that I can wear just about any color,  I’m not likely to jump on the NEON color trend.

With spring in full force, you can bet that  I am certainly going to be sporting some of these hot spring looks….

Miz Mooz ‘Yona’ Wedge Sandal   Nordstrom

Wedge Sandals are my favorite sandal style. They give me height and I love the support they give under foot.

What I love most about this darling wedge is the ankle wrap styling, leather wrapped wedge and flower detail.  What a great pair of shoes to pair with a simple maxi skirt and tee!

Not Your Daughter's Jeans® Twill Ankle Pants

Not Your Daughter’s Jeans® Twill Ankle Pants  Nordstrom

I’m loving the idea of colorful cropped pants for spring and summer.

Going out to dinner I’d wear them with heels and a feminine blouse,  but for shopping on the weekend, it would be a pair of classic Ked sneakers and a striped tee.

p.s.  this is the type of pant you should own in several colors, including white!

Calvin Klein Tye Die Maxi Dress–Nordstrom

I’ve always loved long dresses and I’m so happy that this is the season for maxis.

I love the causal, relaxed feel of this tank maxi and would pair it with a white denim jacket or classic cardigan to dress it up a tad.

 C & C California Floral Shirt

California Floral Shirt  Nordstrom

Nothing says “girlie” like a pretty floral print.

I love this abstract floral print in a classic shirt styling.  This piece is easy to dress up or down…jeans or slacks.

Ralph Lauren Bateau Neck Stripe Top–Nordstrom

Classic and timeless and two things I think of when I see a striped tee.

I’m loving the sleeve length and neckline of this black and white tee.  This would be my go to top paired with a denim skirt, walking shorts or jeans.

Not Your Daughter’s Jeans® ‘Emma’ Stretch Twill Skirt–Nordstrom

Ever have one of those occasions when shorts are too casual but a dress is a bit too much?

Well, this twill skirt will solve that problem.  Love the color, jean detailing and just above the knee-length.  I’m envisioning a crisp white shirt, untucked and a navy cardigan thrown over my shoulders.

C & C California Plaid Pleated Pocket Shirt–Nordstrom

I Love me some gingham plaid.

I think I need this shirt in multiple colors to wear with denim and a fun pair of sandals.

The bottom options are endless which makes this shirt even more appealing.

Striped Jersey Skirt  Old Navy

Fun, flirty and so easy to wear!

I adore this skirt and can see it dressed up or down.

For casual wear I’d pair it with a tank and ss cardigan and for a dressier and more eclectic look, how about a polka dot blouse like this and a chic pair of flats.

Karen Kane Bow Tie Shirt  Zappos

Franco Sarto 'Jesse' Flat

Franco Sarto Jesse Flats  Nordstrom

What I love most about the pieces above is the versatility they offer.  In my book, the versatility, classic styling, fun but classic colors and simple details make these item wardrobe basics.  Pieces like these will carry your through several spring and summer seasons ,and give your endless mix and match opportunities that will make you feel like you have tons of clothes in your closet.

Now, all that’s left to do is go shopping!

So, what’s on your spring wardrobe list?

Room of The Week + A Fashion Moment

Pinned Image

via Decorpad– Room design by Courtney Giles *  Photo by Emily Jenkins Followill

I just love that this classically inspired room with just the right amount of contrast and detail.  The dark navy walls create a dramatic backdrop for the orange headboard and white bedding. The pattern mixing–buffalo check, chevron, greek key and striping create interest without being overwhelming.  The white lamp against the dark wall and dark chest is such a powerful and dramatic statement.  This bedroom is such a great example of simple and classic elements brought together to create a beautiful space.

The clutch handbag trend appears to be really hot now.  Last weekend I took a stroll through TJMaxx and spotted several clutch bags on a shelf near the front of the store.  I checked them out and was wowed by the $19.99 price.  Thinking there might be more options in the handbag area I headed that way.  As with all trips to TJMaxx, I wandered around the store for about an hour, taking in the goods in every department.  Finally, ready to leave, I headed back to the front of the store and was amazed to see all the clutch bags that were on the shelf had been scooped up.

But alas, I ‘m no dummy.  I had tucked one of those babies into my cart when I first saw them so I scored my first clutch of the season!  Yeah me!

So are you loving the clutch trend as much as I am?  Will your Spring clutch be solid in color or something patterned?

p.s.  I’m so crazy about the clutch bag I might even whip out my sewing machine and made a couple myself.  If I do, I’ll be sure and share!
